R.I.P Captain Scott

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I make this post about a man who touched and inspired everyone who knew him. Though we weren't close, he always greeted me with a smile and a warm, sincere hug. He was a great artist and player of his life and character. He is without question one of my greatest inspiration in my historical clothing endeavourers and I will miss him greatly. Yesterday evening on his way home from work, Scott Millbrandt, whom was well known as Captain Scott, was taken from this world quickly, and it's thought did not suffer long. He was a beautiful human, artist, man, friend, inspiration and most of all, a damn brilliant Pirate. He leaves behind a legacy a chivalry that I hope never fades.

Cleaning up this Joint!

Hi all,

Well, even though this is a pretty quiet tribe, everyone needs a little maintenance every now and again, so here I go, doing a bit of clean up and making a few changes.

I'm politely requesting that anyone who is not a member of the ship or of it's affiliates drop me a line off board and express your interest to remain in this tribe. My reasoning behind this is if you're not interested in the associations or attending association events, there's really not a reason for your participation in this tribe.

As of August 1st, this will become a moderated tribe. Persons who are not affiliated with the Kali Ma, Folk Infusion, Dalloua Dance Company, Hakeem's Household, Argali Id or Saka Id will be removed from the member list unless I have been contacted with a request to remain and why.

I know that seems like a hostile takeover, but the fact of the matter is, we're not here to let the world know our business, we're here to talk to each other about our business.

If you have qualm with these new items, please contact me off board, otherwise, thanks to everyone who is here to support the Kali Ma and it's affiliates and I look forward to seeing more activity here!

Hello Kali Ma sisters,
I have a friend who has recently acquired a doumbek and would very much like to find a group to learn with. He is a very nice and completely unoffensive fellow who works in Roseville and lives in East Sac. Any practices in either vicinity would probably be perfect for him.

Thanks for any help you can give,

Anyone need a bed ?

We are getting a new bed this weekened and need to find a new home for my previous bed. It's a Cal King waveless watertube bed. The pillow top is well worn but not stained and there are no leaks in the water tubes. Otherwise the bed is in fine condition and comes with the box spring and frame. The bed is approximately 4 years old.

Please consider the following:
* This bed can't be set directly on the floor and is very heavy when filled with water. You will need to use the frame.

*Some rentals will not allow you to have waterbeds

*The firmness of the bed is determined by the amount of water that you fill into the tubes

*This bed takes 2 people to set up or someone that can lift 75lbs by themself

*To compensate for the worn pillowtop I would suggest a featherbed or other cushion to even out the top surface.

*When you fill the waterbed it is suggested that you purchase a
water softener that keeps from mildew growing in the tubes. Usually about $10.

*You will need to make your own transportation arrangements from North Sacramento. We no longer have a truck

If you are interested please respond ASAP.
We are getting the new bed delivered this weekend and want to get rid of the old bed next week.
The bed will go to whoever wants to make the largest donation and/or faster offer.

Thanks

Just wanted to help get the word out.

Every year
On the night the Moon runs blood
The alleys of GOTHAM come alive
With Vicious Mischief!

A wind
Whips the buildings with razorblade wings
And the cement corridors echo shrieks
And claws

A poor deformed creature, born mangles
But born with a heart hot with love
Is left to die on the ice

A sweet mob of kitty-catties
With a fetish or two
Create themselves a queen
A vandal
With a penchant for art

And a prince’s mummy and daddy die
On the streets
No different than paupers

Because on this night
When the moon bleeds bright
Terrible- but interesting
Things tend to happen

The Big Event is the BloodMoon Regale on Saturday Oct. 28th at 7pm. This year's theme is BATMAN! We have guest dancers from all over Cali coming to participate. No one is paid for their performances, the only pay they get is through the workshops so if people are interested in learning some belly dance moves, please signup. www.UNMATA.com

As a side note: The entire weekend is put on by HOT POT STUDIO a lesbian owned belly dance studio on K street in downtown Sacramento, home to UNMATA a nationally award winning belly dance fusion troupe, artistically directed by AMY SIGIL. www.UNMATA.com

A wind
And claws

A poor deformed creature, born mangles

Gang,

Due to recent issues with outside sources, I've made this tribe a Private one, and deleted some members. This Tribe is now only Kali Ma folks and close associates. If there is someone else you think should be on this Tribe, feel free to pass on the tribe name, but I didn't want it public anymore. I don't reckon we'll use this Tribe that much anyway, but it's here.

Dear Family,

Yesterday morning at Crown, I was asked by my King to join the Order of the Pelican. I will be having my ceremony at 12th Night and hope people can make it there. However, I won't be having a "vigil" but a pre-Pel-party at Cynagua Coronet. I would love to see folks there to share in the celebration (with food and drink of course). More details will come later.

Love,

This is posted on behalf of a good friend/mentor and Instructor in Sacramento:

Serious Dancers Wanted!! Please respond ASAP!

Ok, so if you haven't heard I am putting together a folk dance group. Several people have been asking me through the years when I will be active again and when there will be classes. I hope this answers everyones questions. Listed below is a brief description of an ongoing project that I am very excieted about. It will allow opportunities for people to have continued growth experience. Short term or individual classes I will be assisting the Kali Ma with during SCA events as funds raisers only.

Here are some details below. Please contact me via LJ or preferably via phone if you are interested. I would like to conduct interviews and our first group meeting by the end of October. Please respond by early October for additional details if you are interested or have questions.

We will be focused on learning and performing Dances or Music from the Middle East, Asia and Africa that are Folk or Folk Fusion or Tribal in essence. I will assist in primary dance instruction however, additional classes and instructors will be part or our growth and developemnt. We will not be demonstrating American Tribal or Cabaret Dances.
Our goal will be the obvious exercise benefits but also a social group that can be used as an educational demonstration and personal development and exploration. Performance locations will be determined by group selection and classes will very depending on group development. Fees will not be charged for classes however, every dancer will be responsable for his/her own costuming or possible event expenses. Guest instructors may bill their own fees and would be optional.

Requirements-
1. Dance or Performance experience preferred, however NOT required.

2. I am looking for volunteers who are able to make a weekly commitment or possibly more depending on the performance listings the group elects.

3. Every participant should be interested in long term commitment of this project. Performance developemnt of each individual will be encouraged and required.

4. Many dance forms will be studied, an open mind for development is a must.

5. Positive attitude and social encouragement will be required.

6. Every participant should have availability to practice in their offtime. Homework of additional classes may be assigned as necessary.

7. Participants must be 18 years of age Male or Female.

8. Every participant should be able make their own travel and child care arrangements. Classes will be in Greater Sacramento area. Performances will vary depending on location and transportation long distance for performances may be available.

For any additional questions please see me personally or call.
I look forward to sharing the journey with you.

--------------------

If you are interested in this, please give Isvari an email at lotuswoman7036@sbcglobal.net or you can tribe me and I will get the info to her.

Kali Ma Meeting/Jam at Avi's House

This is to get this information to as many Kali Ma members and affiliates as possible. Sorry if you;ve already seen this several times.

O.K. so finally here are the actual details for the meeting and jam.
It will be this saturday, 7/16 at my new place.
The meeting will be at 6:00 pm.
At the meeting we will mainly discuss Ducal Prize. As you should know
by now, our ship will be hosting the Casbah with help from the Uulan
Mori, Tabor es Zagat, Saka Id, and Kyrstyan's household (i'm even
going to attempt to spell that...also sorry for any other spelling
errors).
Before the meeting, I would like to have a rough headcount of who will
be going, so please please email me (moon_goddess_avi(at)yahoo.com).
If I don't hear from you by wednesday, I'm going to start calling people.

We will be discussing the events our camp will be hosting as khti
fundraisirs, and also seeking out volunteers to help with the casbah
and other fun things.

After the meeting, we will have a jam (with no set quiet hour). A few
things to note about my mom's house. there will be ample parking, but
not a lot of crash space. so either don't drink, or bring a DD. For
those of you who have kids, they are welcome, but be aware that the
house is not childproof, and my mom's dogs are not comfortable with
children. on the dog note, my mom does have two mini dachsunds (weiner
dogs). if you respect them, they'll be alright with you. just give 'em
a little while to acclimate to you.

Directions:
From all points west of roseville:
take your best route to I-80 east. Exit at the Atlantic st/Eureka Road
exit (look for the big red roseville automall sculpture). Turn left
off the xit on to Atlantic Street. At the third light, **turn right
onto Yosemite. At the first stop sign, turn left onto Sierra. Go over
the bridge and through the stop sign at the end of the bridge. After
the stop sign, make your first right onto Grove. Take the next left
onto Placer Street. The house is at the end on the right and the
address is 113 Placer Street. Feel free to park in the empty lot right
next to the house.

From east of Roseville on I-80:
Take I-80 west and exit at Atlantic Street. Follow from ** above.

From US 50:
Take 50 east or west (depending on which direction you are coming
from) to Hazel. Take Hazel towards citrus heights and keep going after
it Turns into Sierra College, Make a left onto Eureka Rd. Go over the
freeway and follow from ** above.

If you want to find your own way and do the mapquest thing, the address is

113 Placer Street
Roseville, CA 95678

Hope to see you all there.

much love

Call for help from up north

Hello Kali Ma!
It's me, Yukiko. I'm up in Alaska still (might be moving back this summer if things go smoothly) and my principality is having a middle eastern event this July. Nobody ever belly dances up here and I miss it terribly. I want to help drum up interest in the genre but I don't know it very well and wondered if y'all could help.

I'd like some tips on what a self-respecting belly dancer in the SCA wears these days. I don't have the wonderful rich resources of California's second-hand stores for jewelry, but I do have cloth and trim. Where can I find perioid patterns?

Also, we are way too white up here and need desperate help with the drumming. Any suggestions on a basic dance drumming CD to listen to? What is the cheapest option for belly dance drums?

I do very much appreciate any help you can give me. Kali ma has always been my favorite belly dancing house. I frequently speak with pride to the folks up here about the nights Kali ma shared their dancing rugs with me. Ah, the good old days...

Thank you,
Yukiko

Stitch 'n Bitch

So I posted this as a listing, but just in case you didn't see it...

I'm organizing a stitch 'n bitch at my place in Concord for the first week of April. I know the majority of Kali Ma womyn are in Sac, but if you want to come out to oogle my pretty new serger, we have crash space. I'm making it a two day event - maybe fabric shopping (in SF or Berkeley - discount fabric stores baby!) Saturday morning and mad sewing Sat. night- Sunday. we'll see how things go, who shows up and what we all feel like.

I have a serger and one sewing machine - so bring another machine if you've got one and whatever projects you want to work on. We'll probably order in pizza and drink cheap-ass beer. Woot!

What would you call our style???

I was thinking about our troupe (Sheer O Asal and offshoots) and the way Lauren had taught us -- what would you call our style? We aren't caberet, that's for damn sure. We aren't purely traditional ethnic. And we aren't American Tribal Style because we didn't learn the "cue" style of improv, where one person gives a cue and everyone follows her into the next move. I personally would call us "tribal fusion", I suppose, though many people who are into "tribal bellydance" would say we aren't quite tribal *because* we don't do the cues and follow-the-leader style. I just find it interesting to read the other bellydance communities around here and how wigged everyone is about "WHAT IS tribal" and how to catagorize it and such, and how they get all tripped out by people calling themselves "tribal" when they "don't use the cues". I don't like being catagorized at ALL, but when someone asks what kind of stuff we do/ did, I always stumble over how to describe it.

Just rambling thoughts.... Obviously I don't think there is ANY One Right Way (TM) and everyone should be free to dance as they feel. I admit, though, that I'd like to learn more about cues and improv in the future, as well as more moves. Something to think about in the future, anyway.

Ass-shakin' and Rakkasah and junk...

So like, I'm a-thinkin' I'm going to Rakkasah on Saturday, going to talk my woman (Angele) into going too. Anyone else?

Also, I've told a few of you this now, but I plan on seriously starting back up with the ass-shaking once I get my surgery out of the way (no date set yet, sometime this summer). So I'm going to be asking folks for music, if I could burn cd's and such. I really will be jumping back in hardcore and with both feet, so to speak. I'm hoping to make some time with some of you to do this.

Anyway, I'll be at Rakkasah on Saturday, decked out and getting my groove on. Who's with me??
