Glad you asked... I guess "a little bit o' this and a little of that just wasn't cuttin' it- huh? Lemme show you...
Just look in the photo album for a small cross-section of my wide skill-set:
Graphic design, photography, art installs, dancing, performance art. I am a WIP (work in progress)- I'll be adding more.....I love to be creative and even more, I love to LIVE my creativity... I'm a Creative Utility Person... If you want to know more about my projects, you can take a look in the discussion topics- which will be updated "often" OR just contact me if you'd like anymore info... here's a little bit about my background.
I have a BFA in Visual Arts w/ emphasis on Graphic Design & Photography. I moved to Portland in 1994 with a unrelenting belief- that something very special was brewing here in the NW. Little did I know... what an understatement that was...
Since some of my first days in Portland, I've been involved in the arts & culture of the city. I worked my first couple of years at the infamous Big Bang... the original mammoth vintage warehouse in downtown PDX- now extinct. This was a hub for the creative community- and if you worked there- you were this weird kind of local celebrity- NO joke...This gave me connections to most of the creative peeps in PDX and those passing thru- it was of a west coast legend- and travelling bands would be sure to stop... I mean- who doesn't want a "hook-up" at the dopest Vintage store ever? This is where i got into Promoting & Documenting Artists... I was privy to so many TALENTED PEOPLE... (the list boggles MY mind) & all they needed was a little bit o' help- to have others realize how fantastic they were.
For a few years here- I contributed my photography & design skills to a couple of different PDX zines. I started promoting music- rock shows- photographing some bands, doing artwork and eventually started promoting & go-go dancing at parties. (That's a whole 'nother story)
For 4-5 yrs, I was a part of a metal furniture/ lighting design & fabrication w/ a company i co-founded w/ my partner Kenneth B. Wright, called Rocketworks*. (*This is actually where my nickname "Astrogirl" was first concieved over a decade ago). We designed & produced custom futuristic furniture and lighting- even dabbled in Movie Props... If any of you have ever been to the "Last Thursday ArtWalk" on Albera st. in PDX... Rocketworks was one of the few, original artists involved in starting up what now has become a staple on the PDX art scene. Kenneth still runs & operates Rocketworks... and has now branched out into his dream of modifying motorcycles... Jesse James & West Coast choppers got NOTHIN' on Mr. Wright... (Go Kenneth!! Watch out for this talented man!)
I've also worked in Animation & Commercial production @ Will Vinton Studios, one of the worlds' best known animation houses- I know you all remember "The California Raisins" & animatied M&M's. I was everything from being a "runner" to a prop buyer- I worked on a couple of different animated TV series (anyone remember Eddie Murphy's "the PJ's"?- no- that's OK) and eventually became an Assistant Producer to one of WVS most seasoned Senior Producers. Eventually- i went on to use my Design skills to Revamp Vinton's entire Brand Identity.WVS was an amazing place to work... with lots of opportunities to use my varied talents. There- in my position- I dealt w/ top design agencies & fortune 500 clients... and this is where "Astrogirl" became a reality... Clients would ask for me by name. A few years back, Phil Knight came alone & took over the company (his son Travis being a long time employee) and it's now known as Laika. (This is where I met the fabulous instigator John Averill... my segway... into the amazing Burningman/ West Coast community i now treasure
After leaving the "Biz" I've just made my way creatively- using my wide skill set- to help others facillitate their creativity. Whether it's a graphic project- giving a super-amazing person's business a credible identiy, or assisting in a massive art installation... I enjoy being on ground Zero- when it comes to being creative.
My DREAM is to find a way to somehow REPRESENT all of the fabulous, talented people I've been SO BLESSED to meet. A special kind of talent agent I guess. I'm calling out for assistance in learning the skills I need to promote all of these amazing creatures- to bring bounty into the lives of the brilliant people who enrich and touch the lives of all of us.
So... I hope this gives you more of an idea of "what i do"... hell- it's hard for me to describe... I just love to be creative- I have the deepest appreciation for those who dare to live their dreams and make our reality, a really beautiful place... Thank you- YOU ROCK.
Now... what fantastically FUN & Fabulous project do YOU need help on?? Shall we travel to a lovely & warm place with fantastic peoples?? Ok... sounds good to me.
west coast rocks...YOU make it happen.
much love,
astrogirl
