Sabian Symbol Interpretation Cycle

As there is still too little known about degree symbols - each month a thread dedicated to the study of all it's thirty symbol degrees. I've long been curious about a possible link between the actual stars occupying a degree and degree symbols. I'll start with three links I find most compelling:

Sabian Symbols, as interpreted by Dane Rudhyar: mindfire.ca/The%20Sabian...0Contents.htm
Inside Degrees, by Elias Lonsdale:spoogle.us/~tsuzuki/ast...html#contents
Fixed star interpretation by Anne Wright:www.constellationsofwords.com/sta....htm

I hope personal experiences and philosophical speculation can elucidate the deeper symbolism present within these symbols.

22 NOVEMBER:

Rudhyar:

FIRST LEVEL: ACTIONAL
PHASE 241 (SAGITTARIUS 1°): RETIRED ARMY VETERANS GATHER TO REAWAKEN OLD MEMORIES.

KEYNOTE: The will to reaffirm the value of the struggle upon which civilization and group-achievements are founded.

Two important factors are revealed in this symbol: the men who have come together are Army men, and they are linked by actions and a type of consciousness that have roots in a common past. What we call “civilization” is built by constant struggles against nature, for it seeks to wrench power from nature. This element of power is seen in its most obvious aspect in the military consciousness. Moreover, all civilization is built upon the accumulated products of the experiences of past generations of dedicated men who agree to follow rather rigid procedures of work. Veterans’ groups in all countries seek to rekindle in their members the old fire of well-fought battles; but the type of abstract or religious thinking normally related to the zodiacal sign, Sagittarius, also implies a special kind of “fire.” It is a fire that burns the “now” of natural living in order to build a greater “tomorrow.” It is future-oriented It aspires to produce a greater, wider civilization, even though it finds its roots in the harvest of mankind’s past. Comradeship and group activities are implied, but the togetherness is one of fighting spirits.

This is the first stage of the forty-ninth five-fold sequence of cyclic phases. The symbol should be understood in its widest and most basic meaning, not merely as the reunion of old comrades, but as referring to the very power implied in the process of civilization, as opposed to culture — thus to the PERPETUATION of the spirit of struggle for power.

Lonsdale:

SAGITTARIUS 1
A woman, manacled in solid gold chains.
Vividly attached to your own personal limitations, idiosyncrasies, and karmic backlog, you are identified within the strict circle of familiar difficulties, dilemmas, issues, and problems. Habituated to a thick atmosphere of being surrounded and enveloped by all the places you have hung out forever. Immobilized in your will and truly feeling incapable of overthrowing the past. You feel chaotically fascinated by and deeply saturated in patterns, syndromes, and subconscious escapes. Yet in the fiery midst of this very enchantment, you can go free if you inwardly come to a place where all the old spells no longer work and your resurgent spirit simply refuses to confound itself any further.

Omega (ω) Hercules, Kajam, is a 4th-magnitude double star in the Club of Hercules.

By some early transcriber's error, the name is now given as Cujam, from Caiam, the accusative of Caia, the word used by Horace (65-8 B.C.) for the Club of Hercules, which is marked by this star. Gaiam, Guiam, and Guyam, frequently seen, are erroneous.

The Club of Hercules is supposed to have been a separate constellation with Pliny (23-79 A.D.).

[Star Names, Their Lore and Meaning, Richard Hinckley Allen, 1889].
The astrological influences of the constellation Hercules

Legend: This constellation was put in heaven as a reminder of the labors of Hercules. According to another account, however, during the war between the Gods and Titans the former all ran to one side of the heavens, which would have fallen had not Atlas and Hercules supported it, and the latter was placed in the sky in commemoration of this service. [Robson*, p.46-47.]

Influences: According to Ptolemy it is like Mercury. It is said to give strength of character, tenacity and fixity of purpose, an ardent nature and dangerous passions. By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Daleth and the fourth Tarot Trump "The Emperor". [Robson*, p.47.]
The astrological influences of the constellation Hercules given by Manilius:

Manilius associates Hercules with tightrope walking (funambulism):

"Hercules, the figure on bended knee and called by the Greek name of Engonasin, about whose origin no certainty prevails. Of this constellation is begotten the desertion, craftiness, and deceit characteristic of its children, and from it comes the thug who terrorizes the heart of the city. If perchance his mind is moved to consider a profession, Engonasin [a Greek title for constellation Hercules meaning Kneeler] will inspire him with enthusiasm for risky callings, with danger the price, for which he will sell his talents: daring narrow steps on a path without thickness, he will plant firm feet on a horizontal tightrope; then, as he attempts an upward route to heaven, (on a sloping tightrope) he will all but lose his footing and, suspended in mid-air, he will keep a multitude in suspense upon himself" [Manilius, Astronomica, 1st century, AD, p.353.]

The history of the star Yed Prior

from p.302 of Star Names, Richard Hinckley Allen, 1889.
[A scanned copy can be viewed on this webpage]

Delta (δ) Ophiuchus, Yed Prior, is a deep yellow star in the left hand of the Serpent Bearer.

Yed Prior, the Former of the two stars in the Hand,— the Arabic Yad ("hand"),— originating with the 17th century German astronomer Bayer, adopted by Flamsteed, and now common. It is sometimes written Jed.

It was Leang, a Mast, in China.

Epsilon (ε Yed Posterior), delta (δ, this star Yed Prior) zeta (ζ Han), eta (η Sabik) of Ophiuchus, along with alpha (α Unukalhai), delta (δ), and epsilon (ε) of Serpens, constituted the Nasak al Yamaniyy, "the Southern Boundary Line of the Raudah", or "Pasture", which here occupied a large portion of the heavens; other stars in Ophiuchus and Hercules forming the Nasak al Shamiyyah, or Northern Boundary. The stars between these two Nasak or boundaries marked the Raudah or pasture itself and Al Aghnam, the Sheep within it, now the Club of Hercules (Kajam is the main star). These sheep were guarded by the Shepherd and his Dog, the two lucidae or alpha stars marking the heads of Ophiuchus (Ras Alhague the Shepherd) and Hercules (Ras algethi the Dog).

Delta (δ, this star Yed Prior) and epsilon (ε Yed Posterior) point out the left hand grasping the body of the Serpent (Serpens); tau (τ) and nu (ν, Sinistra), the other hand, holding the tail.

[Star Names, Their Lore and Meaning, Richard Hinckley Allen, 1889].
The astrological influences of the constellation Ophiuchus

According to Ptolemy it is like Saturn and moderately like Venus. It is said to give a passionate, blindly good-hearted, wasteful and easily seduced nature, unseen dangers, enmity and slander. Pliny said that it occasioned much mortality by poisoning. This constellation has also been called Aesculapius and held to rule medicines. By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Oin and the 16th Tarot Trump "The Lightning Struck Tower". [Robson*, p.54.]
The astrological influences of the constellation Ophiuchus given by Manilius:

"When Ophiuchus, encircled by the serpent's great coils, rises he renders the forms of snakes innocuous to those born under him. They will receive snakes into the folds of their flowing robes, and will exchange kisses with these poisonous monsters and suffer no harm." [Manilius, Astronomica, 1st century AD, book 5, p.333].

"One called Ophiuchus holds apart the serpent which with its mighty spirals [gyris] and twisted body encircles his own, that so he may untie its knots and back that winds in loops. But, bending its supple neck, the serpent looks back and returns; and the other's hands slide over the loosened coils. The struggle will last for ever, since they wage it on level terms with equal powers." [Manilius, Astronomica, 1st century AD, book 1, p.31].
The astrological influences of the star Yed Prior

Of the nature of Saturn and Venus. It causes immorality, shamelessness and revolution. [Robson*, p.218.]

This part of space seems to be cross-section where Sagittarius, Hercules and Ophiuchus meet. When reading Rudhyars explanation of the vision of retired veterans, meeting once again to recall the bygone days of old - yet still full of virility and ready to do battle once again for the common good of Man - I can't but help thinking of the Centaurs.

Hercules and Asclepius (Ophiuchus) were both thought by the most renowned centaur Cheiron, the wounded healer... Hercules and Asclepius both were sons of God, Hercules of Jupiter and Asclepius of Appolo, the Sun. They could have turned away from their human origin to embrace the Divine, but both became champions of Man, much to the dismay of the Gods.

The gathering of veterans (centaurs), wise yet martial and somewhat jolly - incorporating Lonsdale's reading of being caught in an all to familiar loop of the everyday world that is so boring often leads to all sorts of intoxication. This is a theme that is very much connected to Hercules who often lost control and forgot his duty due to poisons and intoxicants. Ophiuchus/Asclepius, the Serpentbearer rules medicine and poison. His very depiction, intimating deep knowledge of what bind body to spirit: the Serpent of Life - Kundalini.

It is not a coincidence that Ophiuchus is very close to the Galactic Center, located between the arrowhead of Sagittarius and Scorpio. Scorpio, also a rather serpentine constellation has many connotations with poison, medicine and (im)mortality. This degree seems to about the ongoing quest of humankind and IT'S TEACHERS to refine and inspire matter, so it will more closely mirror it's divine origin. The subconscious drive for the uncanny and strange experiences often associated with drugs and alcohol, people so often get stuck in to become addicted is the same conscious drive of the disciple to better the world by going beyond it.

    Rhudyar:

PHASE 242 (SAGITTARIUS 2°): WHITE-CAPPED WAVES DISPLAY THE POWER OF WIND OVER SEA.

KEYNOTE: The mobilization of unconscious energies under the pressure of super-personal motives.

Wind and sea are in constant interplay, and the results of that interplay are inspiring and beautiful. In symbolism, the wind (pneuma is the early Greek word for "spirit") is associated with spiritual dynamism; the stirring of deep energies this dynamism produces obeys cosmic or super-personal rhythms, the power of which is irresistible.

At this second stage of the forty-ninth five-fold sequence we have a picture which contrasts the powerful but beautiful storms of nature with the often gory and hysterical crises of a civilization which progresses through war. The picture presented speaks of SUBTILIZATION THROUGH RHYTHMIC INTENSITY.

    Lonsdale:

    SAGITTARIUS 2
Many iris blooming in a wide variety of colors.
A vast multiplicity of vantage points, ways of being, complete identities. Fabulously suggestible and impressionable. Fanning out in all directions, becoming one with everything. Desiring and needing to bring forth each self you have ever been, every fancy you are filled with, you are impetuous, outrageous, and irrepressible. Freedom at all costs. The moment prevails. Ferment and flux. A great difficulty in holding steady, perpetual adolescent rebellion, and the magnificent ability to become absolutely anything. Experience is all. Your deepest need is to embrace your astounding nature and let it be free, despite all signs to the contrary.

Hey Riptide, you remember the sabian aspect orbs? This part of space relates to waning trine, a dissemination of the wisdom gained until now, which is one of the prime functions of Sagittarius - the imparting of knowledge rather than the acquisition (gem.) or demonstration (Leo) of knowledge. From 0 Point Aries it can even be considered a bi-trine, sort of reminiscent of the dual nature of the centaur and indicative of the incredible power of transcendence contained in Sagittarius, but contrary to the inconjuncting strangeness of Scorpio, Sagittarius energy is by it's very nature flowing and almost lyrical, compared to the compressed and gnomic intensity of the preceding sign.

I do remember the aspect orbs! Those are really interesting.

I have a sister with a whole lot of sagittarius.
She is very good at and fond of giving advice and she doesn't dwell long on any one intense feeling or idea it seems (I don't often witness her "getting stuck" on any one thing) - expanding beyond and pushing into new "territory" and the next phase of life - part of that is flowing and maybe lyrical.
I'd say grace and ease and confidence for sure.

      Mon, November 23, 2009 - 12:47 PM
I can see some parallels between the symbols and the stars inhabiting this part of space. According to Wright the two stars forming the head of Scorpio are sharing this degree with the hand of Ophiuchus and the club and shoulder (first part of the degree) of Hercules, suggesting the forceful and passionate inspiration of seemingly animal instincts. Wind and Sea are part of the same reality, as are the divine and animal hybrid that is the centaur.

We are challenged to let go of clear distinctions and embrace the paradox of multidimensional experience. The highest impulses of our nature form an osmotic relationship with the lowest instincts conjuring up a kaleidoscopic frame of reference only to be lost in the thrall of experience. Scorpio merges with Sagittarius and the extrazodiacal forces to demonstrate that truth cannot contained by the dialectical mind. The control of Asclepius of the life force, suggests a transcendent source that is guiding our actions to move even further than we could ever imagine, Hercules shoulder and club symbols of unsuspected depths of power and authority to conquer the unknown.

    The 24th of November:

    Rudhyar:

PHASE 243 (SAGITTARIUS 3°): TWO MEN PLAYING CHESS.

KEYNOTE: The transcendent ritualization of conflict.

Essential to socio-cultural living is the transmutation of man's natural aggressiveness under most conditions of existence. Many rituals, sports and games have no other basic aim. In chess the complex types of energies which in their togetherness constitute a human person are symbolized by six kinds of pieces (king, queen, bishops, knights, rooks and pawns). The struggle between light and darkness (the Yang and Yin forces) is ritualized, ending in most cases with the checkmating of the king (the ego, the conscious self). In a dualistic world such a contest between polarized forces is omnipresent. The chess game trains men to be more objective, more careful, more aware of whole situations — and less impulsive and intent upon side issues.

This third stage symbol deals with conflict, but at the level of group culture and psychological symbolization. It brings to the objective consciousness the basic realities in interpersonal INTERPLAY.
    Lonsdale:

    SAGITTARIUS 3
Clouds overhead seen in a reflecting pool.
Enlightenment rarely comes by pursuing straight lines, by following predictable tracks. If you wish to find the secrets to the mysteries, you must give yourself over completely to the flux and to the ferment, and allow the winds of destiny to prevail entirely. This immediate sense world casts a very different glow than the heavens ever could. By identifying yourself with each shifting nuance, every flicker of instantaneous movement, you find the inner worlds way to waking up here in this Earth. But this journey is a perilous one, for you become awash in so many far-flung spheres, and there is no map and there are no shortcuts. You must somehow see right through your own most addictive and compulsive impulses, and ride the wild waves homeward through sheer presence of mind and gut conviction that everywhere leads to the same place. And that if you find yourself cast into any corner of fate it is the one perfect place to get home free within, if you can hang on and let go and never lose your sense of humor.

PHASE 244 (SAGITTARIUS 4°): A LITTLE CHILD LEARNING TO WALK WITH THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF HIS PARENTS.

    Rudhyar:

KEYNOTE: The natural assistance of superior powers during crises of growth.

At an early stage in its development, every living organism must make an attempt to overcome the power of gravitation, or rather to learn to use it in order to fulfill the purpose of its life. This implies passing through a critical state of growth — growth in freedom, potency and individuality, inasmuch as "walking" always symbolizes self-induced progress. In such a crisis the individual is not left alone. Some more evolved Power and Intelligence watches, encourages and gives examples to be followed.

As usual, this fourth stage symbol in the forty-ninth sequence gives a hint of technique. It presents a picture of the conditions under which a RESOLUTION OF CONFLICT can be ensured, whether at the organic, the personal or the super-personal level of unfoldment.

    Lonsdale:

    SAGITTARIUS 4
A young prince undresses to bathe in a pool.
Seeking your own reflection. Willing to go to any lengths to divest yourself of that which stands between yourself and your world. Seeking a path, a practice, a journey from an insulated way of life to a vitally engaged way of life, but hung up at the point of giving yourself completely over. Stalling for time, reaching for excuses, pulling in escapes and perpetuations of the status quo, you linger on the brink between one world and another. Propelled forward, but equally jerked backward. Destiny shall assert itself in a forward direction at the right time. And before that happens the drama of "will he, won't he?" dominates consciousness and energy, keeping everything tense, fascinating, and hopeful.

    november 26th:

    Rudhyar:

PHASE 245 (SAGITTARIUS 5°): AN OLD OWL SITS ALONE ON THE BRANCH OF A LARGE TREE.

KEYNOTE: A poised and wise approach to existence based on a clear perception of unconscious factors and their operation.

The owl has always been a symbol of wisdom, and its hooting call has evoked a rise to mysterious and hidden elements in life. The owl functions lucidly in the night aspect of existence. His eyes see what men normally fail to perceive. He represents that consciousness which is active where the processes of life normally escape the attention of the personal ego and its intellect.

This is the last of the five symbols in the forty-ninth sequence. It suggests the possibility of developing a wisdom beyond tragedy, a peace and poise beyond conflict. One might speak here of TRANSLUCIDITY.

    Lonsdale:

    SAGITTARIUS 5
Three women materializing out of a fog.
Being mesmerized by your own triple reflection. Casting a huge chunk of your own soul back into the dim past, casting another chunk of your soul into the remote future, and enshrouding the present time chunk of your soul in layer after layer of obscurity and evasiveness. Living simultaneously in past, present, and future, but with all three time frequencies held away. Therefore, to a fantastic extent, you live inside the subconscious mind with virtually no conscious outlet. Down inside there something extraordinary is happening. Free from the glare of any form of overt reflection you are gestating, healing, and making yourself ready for the infinite unknown to pop or hatch. Intensive seething forces of dreaming into the void, the great abyss. And while knocked out of outer commission, liberated to conceive the inconceivable and to renew your tangled and damaged roots in the old wise woman way that never ages and always works.

    SECOND LEVEL: EMOTIONAL/CULTURAL

PHASE 246 (SAGITTARIUS 6°): A GAME OF CRICKET.
    Rudhyar

KEYNOTE: The development of skill in group-situations testing collective goals.

Any society is built on the interplay between groups of people, each group united by an at least temporary aim. The individual person within the group is assigned a particular role in the play; and definite rules have to be obeyed. The game teaches not only personal skill, but fairness and cooperation. Where this symbol is found, the value of making individual-will or ego-will subservient to collective cultural patterns is emphasized. Several symbols belonging to Scene Seventeen (Sagittarius) relate to games or group rituals, because these are "ab-stracted" from everyday social behavior and used as educative means to develop group-consciousness and an individual sense- of responsibility to the group.

    Lonsdale:

    SAGITTARIUS 6
A pair of shoes with live wings on each.
To delight in pursuit is never to get there, but to enjoy the ride all the way. To identify with flight is to run from what is dense and heavy and to deny the pain of Earth. And to dream of a personal limitlessness is to stay out of realities that bind. The longing and the craving, the fantasy and the vision are everything here. And as you perpetuate illusions you feel no pain. Somewhere you are convinced that the very best thing is to be free, and that to fall for linear progression is to be a fool. Everything you know and follow is true in worlds beyond, and false in the dense immediacy of Earth experience.

    November 28th:

    Rudhyar:

PHASE 247 (SAGITTARIUS 7°): CUPID KNOCKS AT THE DOOR OF A HUMAN HEART.

KEYNOTE: A stirring-up of individual longings for romantic love.

In contrast to the preceding, this symbol refers to what one might call a personal initiation through an ideal love. Far from being related to social value, ideal love tends to exalt individual characteristics in that it glorifies what seems able to fill poignant and often unconscious needs. Such a love is a projection of the anima or animus Images which in a sense complement the outer character of the one who loves. It is a subjective event which tends to bring to the lover a crisis or emotional chaos. Such a love often turns asocial if not antisocial and is blocked or frowned upon by society.

This second stage symbol is in direct opposition to that of the "cricket game." Intensely romantic love knows no rules and ignores collective purpose or dictates of reason. Yet it may bring to the individual an intensity of feeling which no group togetherness can arouse, at least at the ordinary social level. What is implied is a challenge to EMOTIONAL REBIRTH.

    Lonsdale:

    SAGITTARIUS 7

    Rats with ruby eyes.
Uncanny mentality. Knows what's going on. Virtually psychic ability to follow inner subtle tracks. You are accustomed to the dark. At home in the margins, living upon scraps and notions, following a hunch--you are full of superstitions, idiosyncratic and cranky. Given over to an on-the-edge world that hugs twilight. Essentially neither this nor that. Independent, anarchic, and full of surprises. Resilient, tough, strong, and enduring, but self-obstructive, and prone to a form of trance which attracts astral entities and may lose the path in the mists.

    Sunday, 29th of December

    Rudhyar:

PHASE 248 (SAGITTARIUS 8°): WITHIN THE DEPTHS OF THE EARTH NEW ELEMENTS ARE BEING FORMED.

KEYNOTE: The alchemical fire which both purifies and transforms the very substance of man's inner life.

Forces are at work in the deepest layers of the psyche which in their own way respond to the outer stimulation produced by a strong involvement in group ambitions and emotions, and even more by the powerful tensions and releases of love. An alchemical process goes on, usually unnoticed by the conscious ego, until it becomes obvious that a kind of mutation has taken place and a new level of awareness and of responses to life has been reached.

At this third stage of the five-fold sequence we deal with both the basic rhythm of growth of the human being and the reaction to more individualized experiences which aroused the emotions. The very substance of the person's nature undergoes modifications, on the basis of which a new step may be taken. The symbol draws our attention to the inner changes. We have to become aware of them. What is implied is a kind of PSYCHIC GESTATION.

    Lonsdale:

    SAGITTARIUS 8
The harsh landscape of the moon with a black sky. The Earth is not visible.
When chaos joins forces with hard and heavy dense frequencies, we are in for an exceedingly difficult journey. The feeling level is depressive and anguish-susceptible. The energies are chaotic and almost random. The result is an undercurrent, an undertow that is vicious. All seems hopeless--the situation contains no relief in sight. In the thick of this dilemma, a momentum toward the future is being seeded in one of two directions. Either you are condemning yourself to grim and forbidding territory as a form of self-punishment for being so far off, or you are preparing the way for a change of heart toward compassion and forgiveness, even for your own greatest weaknesses. It all depends upon whether you can allow in a spiritual light of redemption for the worst. Or whether instead your mind is made up, and another round of no nourishment at all is in order for the one who is lost and now has no way back. That is, until you let the light in to this terrible darkness and radically relent from your judgmental stance.

Hey - did you google that? 1111 is supposedly related to a rapid expansion of consciousness. As you might know 11 is a master number signifying an extraordinary trait or talent that has to manifest or it will turn destructive - a direct path to pure spirit=Pluto. A numbers of years I have been seeing 111 everywhere, accompanied by an eerie feeling, as if I was picked up and transported to another world, as if my senses where recalibrated to their original state: highly stimulating, yet disconcerting - full alignment.

Then there is 1111, This is a doubling of 11 and signifying a balance of the personal and impersonal - a sort of rainbow bridge. It has all the qualities of 11 and 111 and then some. Supposedly on the 21th of 12 2012 at 11:11, the world as we know it will end and New One will begin. This might a good the time to start studying Mayan astrology.

But seriously, according to some, you have to take notice of the actual mental sensation you are experiencing during these moments of synchronicity, as they are important. You are at a rare junction, where your everyday reality is suffused by the spiritual. A time beckoning full realization.

PHASE 249 (SAGITTARIUS 9°): A MOTHER LEADS HER SMALL CHILD STEP BY STEP UP A STEEP STAIRWAY.

KEYNOTE: The need in any social situation to assist the less evolved in their management of the problems which society requires its members to solve.

A staircase does not present a natural difficulty to a very young child. Man builds stairs and therefore is responsible for assisting the child to climb them step by step. Social and cultural living is not "natural." The child must first be taught by example, then helped along as he imitates as well as he can the grownup's behavior. Climbing stairs is only an illustration of a general process. Every generation must involve itself in teaching the next even the simplest skills needed for social existence.

At the fourth stage of the preceding five-fold sequence we saw parents encouraging a little child to walk. Walking is a natural human function; climbing stairs is a skill made necessary by the building of several-storied houses — a product of civilization. What is implied here is SOCIAL CONCERN for the less evolved of society's members.

Playful, exuberant, spontaneous, and elusive, you are restless under constraint, with all of civilization representing constraint. Desperate to be free. When not held down, you have spectacular abilities and affinities. But when bound by time, you become abrasive and provoking. Temperamental in extreme ways. Aching for free movement in a vast territory. Drawn to every extreme that exists. The body and soul of one who can never be identified, tamed, narrowed. You are the one who knows how the deep Earth is surging with volatile currents, and these bear all hope and promise if they are followed with open arms. The one who shows everybody what life is like when it lets itself go and contagiously ripples with permission and encouragement for each and all to come out and play and explore the far edges, and even perhaps over those edges into the greater wilderness. Claiming the allegiance of those whose wildness is no passing whim, but the only viable way.

PHASE 250 (SAGITTARIUS 10°): A THEATRICAL REPRESENTATION OF A GOLDEN-HAIRED GODDESS OF OPPORTUNITY.

KEYNOTE: Society's efforts at dramatizing the greatness of what it offers to the ambitious person.

Civilization as a process demands the goading of individuals to spend their vital energies in the pursuit of achievements which, while fulfilling the individual's ambition and greed, nevertheless generate various forms of what we call "progress." This sequence of symbols mainly refers to the drive for advancement along "human, all too human" paths of growth.

This is the last symbol of the fiftieth five-fold sequence. We see in it how socio-cultural forces operate by dramatization and propaganda. The result is all too often a process of FORCED GROWTH.

Prone to excess in all things, in a release of spirits unending. Becoming roles, worlds, ways of presenting self. Taking karmic episodes of the past and replaying them in another variation. Given over to the senses, body-charged, chaotic, and commanding. Taking life through all its shifts and nuances with easy and spectacular capacity, you feel somewhat at the mercy of the shadow that comes back to haunt. Effortless grace and subtle burnout. PHASE 251 (SAGITTARIUS 11°): IN THE LEFT SECTION OF AN ARCHAIC TEMPLE, A LAMP BURNS IN A CONTAINER SHAPED LIKE A HUMAN BODY.

KEYNOTE: The value of the "return to the body" advocated by modern thinkers in order to balance the stress on intellectuality and objective consciousness.

This sequence of five symbols confronts us with rather mysterious images, which nevertheless can be given very profound and important meanings for today. The original formulation of this symbol spoke of "physical enlightenment," but what seems to be implied, in contemporary terms, is the need to rely upon "the wisdom of the body" of which so much is made in sensitivity training and Gestalt psychotherapy. This refers to the process of deconditioning a consciousness that has become a prisoner of intellectual concepts with their total reliance on quantitative values, objectivity and conformity to the official patterns of our culture.

Everything seems equal to everything else. Life coming in at such an angle of perception that it always leads to the same places. What goes around comes around. Characteristic observations, pet phrases, cliches, truisms. Becoming aware that everything makes perfect sense, that it all fits together as naturally as can be and that all you have to do is pay attention. There is a second, deeper lesson--elusive and baffling--that may ultimately prove to be centered around "Who is the observer, and what is that special ingredient they put in there that makes everything so self-evident?" If the world is right there for the asking, the self remains an enigma, an unknown, the territory yet to be mapped out or rendered commonsensical.

PHASE 252 (SAGITTARIUS 12°): A FLAG TURNS INTO AN EAGLE; THE EAGLE INTO A CHANTICLEER SALUTING THE DAWN.

KEYNOTE: The spiritualization and promotion of great symbols of a New Age by minds sensitive to its precursory manifestations.

In the background of this strange allegory we can recognize the deep-seated belief that the American nation and its basic democratic institutions were constituted to be the cradle for a new step in human evolution. The "flag" is the abstract symbol of the nation; it becomes an "eagle" — another U.S. symbol — when the concept is made alive by bold and transcendent action. The eagle symbolizes spiritual will and the power to rise to the highest possible altitude of consciousness and purpose. Flying at such an altitude, the eagle is the first living creature to perceive the rising sun. Having perceived it, it heralds it — and by so doing is identified with the crowing chanticleer, who had convinced himself that his resonant cry was responsible for the rise of the sun and the coming of a new day.

This second stage symbol contrasts with the first in that it is completely future-oriented. It speaks of "peak experiences" instead of the wisdom found in the organismic depth of the body- consciousness. It urges us to bring our noblest ideals to actual life through the power of the spiritual will. A Keyword might be ANNUNCIATION.

    Rudhyar:

PHASE 253 (SAGITTARIUS 13°): A WIDOW'S PAST BROUGHT TO LIGHT.

KEYNOTE: The karma of past actions as it affects opportunities presented by a new cycle.

What the "widow's past" is remains obscure but the point is that even as a past cycle is closed — a phase of married life ends — the karma of whatever deeds or misdeeds this cycle witnessed will almost inevitably intrude into the new life period. Also, once a cycle of activity is concluded, much that was unclear or unconsciously motivated in the events it witnessed can now more easily come to the clear consciousness of the mind. It is possible to joyously herald the dawn from high above the actual stresses of existence (the preceding symbol), but the new day may be found loaded and darkened by the unfinished business of many a yesterday.

This is the third stage of the fifty-first five-fold sequence. Mankind is "the widow," because our soon-to-be-concluded Piscean Age has buried most of the ideals it once revered and proclaimed. Yet the New Age will have to deal with many oppressive ghosts. This is a symbol of RETRIBUTION.

    Lonsdale:

    SAGITTARIUS 13
An embalmer at work on a mummy.
Death manifests among the living in myriad forms and guises. It is unforgettable in its imprint. Those who are drawn to get close to death and to get involved with it have their own set of challenges accordingly. Will they get wrapped up in the lesser levels of death and turn into habitual trapped creatures, or will they extend the range of their affinity and their allegiance to encompass the redemptive and the regenerative aspects of death? Being magnetized to relive previous deaths, to learn the ways of death and to fathom its mysteries, and being able to move among many sides of this equation. But ultimately drawn either to indulge the regressive loop of being in circles of recurrence, swept away, or to open up the space tremendously--to collaborate with the lively ones among the dead, and to discover that in their world, which is scooped out in that exquisite sensibility through which the lively dead see this world, they celebrate its free becoming more fully than anybody else would be able to approach in that sparkling way.

PHASE 254 (SAGITTARIUS 14°): THE GREAT PYRAMID AND THE SPHINX.

KEYNOTE: The enduring power of occult knowledge and of its quasi-divine Custodians, "Seed-men" of a previous cycle of existence.

The belief in an Original Tradition based on the perfect knowledge of the archetypal principles and forms which underlie all manifestations of life on this Earth (and by extension in the cosmos) is deeply rooted in man's consciousness. The Great Pyramid and the Sphinx are witnesses to such a Tradition, especially for the Western world. The symbol implies that such an archetypal knowledge remains the foundation upon which men's minds can still build solid and valid formulations, as new evolutionary developments are pending. This fourth stage symbol suggests that this occult knowledge and the traditional process of acquiring it is still available, and that by accepting their principles modern man can best meet the challenge of our present world crisis. The symbol, interpreted from a personal point of view, points to the greatness of a Soul's past achievements and the value of trying to re-evoke this past. What is revealed is THE POWER OF SPIRITUAL ANCESTRY.

Forced to get it. Magnetizing the collective crises and subcurrents can give you a crash course in what has happened to the world and what must be done about it. You feel especially keenly pulled to participate in situations where anything goes and you must live by your wits or else. This is the fast, hard way to get a refresher course in the tortures and the plagues, in order to come up with solutions and alternatives of the most avid, incisive, and irresistible kind.

PHASE 255 (SAGITTARIUS 15°): THE GROUND HOG LOOKING FOR ITS SHADOW ON GROUND-HOG DAY, FEBRUARY 2.

KEYNOTE: The value of anticipating new turns of events and ascertaining future prospects.

In our modern industrial society where policy changes and decisions often take several years to reach full actualization, it has become essential to plan with an eye on probable future developments. Such planning requires a study of past trends and the extrapolation of the results. What above all is implied in the symbol is a sensitivity to social or planetary rhythms, and the need to ensure at least relative safety by planning ahead.

This is the last symbol in this fifty-first sequence. Something of the meanings of the first four is involved in the process it suggests. In its highest form the knowledge required is "eonic consciousness" — in modern terms the new science of PROSPECTIVE.

When you're getting ready to take off in a whole different direction, there is first a transition that is both immensely exciting and fantastically disturbing. You feel just about swept away by the oncoming changes and just before they really get going, the tension, the pressure, and the strain can tear you apart. You want to go with it, yet you yearn for sanctuary. This keen ambivalence gets loaded with desire, anticipation, memory pictures, and utopian visions. The mix is volatile. Learning how to ride this wave is such a great endeavor that it, in itself, becomes what it is all about. The consummate opportunity to open wide, but stay substantively firm and concentrated. Mastery or bust. The infinite future or wipe-out. A spine-tingler all the way.

This degree seems to suggest to maintain a sense of Balance in the wake of massive change. As Libra is often called the sign of balance, Sagittarius is what Libra so desperately strives for and seeks to accomplish by the continuous process of measuring one's the pairs of opposites to escape them in a new order.

This new order is now starting to become real and Sagittarius enacts the tremendous anticipation of this advent. There is again mention of Hercules who spans a major part of Sagittarius' vibrational bandwidth. Hercules is a great hero, but sometimes rather rash and unreflecting, as is often the case with centaurs, there are delusions about what is divine and animal. Although they have an equine appearance, the horse might not refer to their animal nature but to their soul, often described as The White Horse. Hercules garment is the lionskin and he makes full use of this under the disguise of the king of animals: the ego.

This is also the degree where the intergalactic Center: the Great Attractor is located (See Sagittarius topic-www.philipsedgwick.com/Galact...r.htm). The gravitational pull of this center is of such magnitude it dwarfs the Galactic Center at the end of Sagittarius and the Super Galactic Center at the beginning of Libra - both close to the Cardinal Axis. Although our own Galaxy clouds our vision to really see what is going on within the Centaurus system, the gravity is so massive, it bends light - so you can see what is going on beyond it..

As we get ready for the alignment of our Sun with the Solstice point on the axis of the Galactic Center and the end of the Tzolkin calendar, spanning 5126 years (a septile, the same aspect the Super Galactic Center makes to our Zodiac) the cross of the the tropical zodiac is starting to converge with the cross of the Sidereal Zodiac to form the holy cross. www.lunarplanner.com/siderea...ogy.html

Sanitarians aim high and see far, sometimes beyond the confines of time and space, a prospect of what is behind the curtains of our everyday experience is starting to become more real. Those with planets conjunct, transiting or progressing are able to see beyond the spaceo-temporal continuum and grasp the true center of reality.

PHASE 256 (SAGITTARIUS 16°): SEA GULLS FLY AROUND A SHIP IN EXPECTATION OF FOOD.
KEYNOTE: The easily acquired dependence of psychic desires upon the stimulation of social circumstances.
Animals drawn into the circle of what human society produces find it easier to depend on man's handouts than to pursue their usually difficult search for sustenance. The sea gulls here symbolize the more wild and normally untamable energies of the human soul, but they too can develop a land of domesticated dependence upon the by-products of man's adventures within the realm of the unconscious (the sea). Natural instincts feed on the reactions, and often perversions, of the socially conditioned mind-ego.
This is the first stage in the process represented by the fifty-second sequence of five symbols. It shows us how nature can readily become subservient to man's restless ambition to dominate the entire biosphere through an all-human planetary socioeconomic organization. This is a symbol of DEPENDENCE.

Building up fresh capacity in this lifetime to scale the heights. But you remain preoccupied and absorbed within honest tasks. A pervasive conviction grows and forms, of how it really is. You're willing to take every step to reach a far goal, and attentive to what is really there. A throwback to the old ways of a rural past. Oddly comfortable in adopting forms and moving through phases and taking on the worlds. The journeyman learns the ways of the journey and gathers Earth wisdom in small bundles. Easter is the Christian way of celebrating the coming of spring and the rebirth of life on this earth after the hardships of winter.

PHASE 258 (SAGITTARIUS 18°): CHILDREN PLAYING ON THE BEACH, THEIR HEADS PROTECTED BY SUNBONNETS.

KEYNOTE: The protection society affords to as yet immature individuals as they begin to deal with the powerful energies of their unconscious nature.

What we call "culture" is an attempt to limit and define the areas of consciousness and interpersonal or group behavior within which growth and exploration into super-physical realms can be considered safe and sound. Sun and sea are powerful forces; they can kill as well as illumine and inspire, as can various kinds of forces within man's unconscious. The cultural and religious institutions of society aim to act as protective agencies, especially for the youth. Overprotection and hypocritical behavior by supposed grownups defeat this purpose, and today we are witnessing an at least partially healthy rebellion against the protective paternalism of social institutions. This, however, does lead to many a symbolic "sunstroke."

This is the third symbol in the fifty-second five-fold sequence. It brings to us a realization of the value of PROTECTIVENESS, yet also evokes the negative possibility that too much protection may be unhealthy and defeat its purpose.

KEYNOTE: The need for people concerned with the future to discover a new way of living and more wholesome surroundings.

The evident reason for using "pelicans" at this stage of the cyclic process is that tradition tells us that these birds are so concerned with their young that they give their own blood and flesh to feed their progeny. Whether this is fact or symbol, the meaning of this picture refers to a situation that lately has acquired great urgency. Our technological society is polluting not only our global environment, but the mind and feeling-responses of new generations as well. The search for a new way of life is seen by many people to be imperative.

In this fourth symbol of the fifty-second sequence we are told that the race's SURVIVAL has become a matter of extreme importance. Whole animal species may be destroyed by our civilization; mankind itself is in danger. Going to distant planets is hardly the answer. A generation may have to sacrifice itself for the sake of its descendants.

At the close of this series of symbols we again see a reference to the relationship between man and nature. Man’s ingenuity and foresight make it possible for him to plan for the future in terns of his knowledge of the seasonal rhythm of cold and heat and, by implication, of even larger cycles of change. Quiet and relaxation may have to be sacrificed, and some hardships endured, in order that another type of problem, which may involve survival though proper feeding, may be met at some later time.

Lambda (λ) Hercules, Maasym, is a deep yellow star on the left arm of the Kneeling Man.

Masym, Maasym, Maasim, Mazym, Mazim, and Masini are from the Arabic Misam, the Wrist, although the second-century Greek astronomer Ptolemy as well as most of the stellar map-makers located omicron (ο) on that part of the figure; but the 17th century German astronomer Bayer, probably by an oversight, gave the title to lambda (λ Maasym), not far from the left shoulder, and hence the mistake which still survives. Burritt's Atlas of 1856 applied Masym to this lettered {p.245} star at the elbow, and duplicated it at the one on the hand, omitting the letter; but this title had appeared in the Latin Almagest of 1515 and the Alfonsine Tables of 1521, not as a proper name, but simply indicative of the position of the star omicron (ο), which, though now unnamed, should bear that title instead of lambda (λ Maasym). The same word is used in those works to describe the positions of theta (θ) and eta (η Hoedus 11) Auriga in the similar location, but is there written Mahasim. The Century Cyclopedia, by a misprint for lambda (λ Maasym), uses Masym for chi (χ) Hercules in the left hand of the giant.

Lambda (λ Maasym) also was Chaou, one of the early feudal states of China.

    The Sun flies forward to his brother Sun;

The dark Earth follows wheel'd in her ellipse. - Tennyson's The Golden Year.

Although Johann Tobias Mayer of Gottingen seems to have been the pioneer, in 1760, in the efforts to ascertain the direction of the sun's motion among the stars, yet Sir William Herschel was the first successful investigator as to this, about 1806, and he settled upon the vicinity of lambda (λ Maasym) as the objective point of our solar system, the Apex of the Sun's Way; and his determination was, in a great measure, confirmed by later astronomers.

    SECOND LEVEL: EMOTIONAL/CULTURAL

PHASE 261 (SAGITTARIUS 21° DEGREE): A CHILD AND A DOG WEARING BORROWED EYEGLASSES.

KEYNOTE: The use of imagination and make-believe in anticipating higher stages of development.

This rather peculiar symbol seems to imply here that by imitating features belonging to a level of consciousness as yet unreachable, the process of growth may be accelerated. Eyeglasses symbolize intellectual development; the chiefs of primitive tribes in some instances have sought to impress their people by wearing spectacles without glass, or western hats – simply because these objects seemed characteristic of a race of superior people. This is similar to the process of growth by identification with a ‘Master’ or guru. In a sense it is mere pretending or make-believe, yet wearing the ‘mask’ of a god the medicine man at the time becomes for all practical purposes the incarnation of the god. Growth is always a hierachical process, even if the growing entity is not aware of it.

This is the first of five symbols constituting the fifty-third sequence. It suggests the value of LEARNING THROUGH IMITATION.

    Toads singing at night.
X marks the spot. Plugged in to universal currents of energy and awareness. You listen and look toward the collective, universal voice and resonance, pervasively sensing how the inner worlds synchronize with the outer worlds. A magical, shamanic realm in all respects, working from the sacred circle and the cone of light. Alchemical transmutation from state to state and world to world. In touch with the borderline, hugging the edges. You feel especially keen to taste and feel what needs to happen, what wants to arise, tapping the pulse of the times and speaking for all of those who stay tuned in for further developments.

The history of the star Atria

Alpha (α) Triangulum Australis, Atria, is a star in the constellation of the Southern Triangle.

    Alpha (α Atria), beta (β) and gamma (γ), 3.1 each, were—perhaps are now—the seamen's Triangle Stars.

The constellation was given the title "the Three Patriarchs", believed to refer to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, by Christian interpreters of the constellations.

    PHASE 262 (SAGITTARIUS 22°): A CHINESE LAUNDRY.

KEYNOTE: Making use of one’s special racial-cultural background in order to survive and prosper in an alien environment.

There are many life situations in which because on one’s ancestral or personal background, or their special interests, and individual finds themselves separated from the people in the midst of whom they have to live. Yet they often can use this background a valuable foundation for smooth operation and acceptance by the alien environment, without losing their own natural character.

This second stage symbol stands in contrast to the one for the first stage. There is no longer a question of imitating the ways of a superior group, but instead of maintaining one’s own integrity in situations which neither give value for, not favour what one basically is. What is asked here is SELF-CONTAINMENT…and good humour!

Darkness seeks release by the right vessel, at the right time, in the right place. You must be able to contain the darkness and to form it into an exquisitely sculpted-out seething chaos, and then discover your willingness and ability to reverse field, to give over the very thing you took as your own. This comes the hard way, by enduring the ravages of living in a volatile chaos almost as victim and then seizing command of your own vessel. Until you do it, the darkness leaks out around the edges and fosters the worst all around. Usually, triggering so much subtle destruction and indulgence in the negative brings you up short, and triggers the final reckoning and the huge release, sending darkness on its way and opening a space for light to flood through and start a new cycle, where the old had seemed to be decadent and established for the duration.

PHASE 263 (SAGITTARIUS 23°): A GROUP OF IMMIGRANTS AS THEY FULFILL THE REQUIRMENTS OF ENTRANCE INTO THE NEW COUNTRY.

KEYNOTE: Consciously accepting the ways of a new stage of experience, in readiness for the opportunities it will present.

As we pass any threshold leading to a new realm of existence we have to meet certain requirements and the necessity to adjust to new ways of life – in action, thought and feeling. At times this may seem an ordeal but it is inevitable. Everything that will follow depends largely on how we cross this threshold, and on the spirit in which we meet unfamiliar and perhaps shocking experiences.

At this third stage of the fifty-third five-fold sequence we face a combination of the two preceding symbols. We find ourselves in a period of TRANSITION. We have to imitate, yet retain our inner integrity.

    Lonsdale:

    SAGITTARIUS 23

Methodology, technique, the how of things. Immersing yourself in the field of new ideas, fresh approaches, and innovative paths, imaginatively and energetically. Exposing yourself to possibilities, visions, ways to evolve. The body's wisdom musically in touch and in tune, sensing the resonance of cellular awakening. Eager and enthusiastic and bright, you have given over to the process. Always in midstream. Seizing upon opportunities, challenges, openings. Needing to know just how it feels at the micro levels. What is it like to be free, to be joyous, to be unrestricted, here in the body, in the world? You seek the full-on motivating spark of knowing what it feels like to be tuned out and discovering what it really means to be tuned in all the way.

Alpha (α) Ophiuchus, Ras Alhague, is a sapphire star on the head of the Snake Charmer.

Ras alhague, or Rasalague, is from Ras al Hawwa, the Head of the Serpent-charmer, the Moorish El Hauwe, the first being its only title with the 17th century German astronomer Bayer. The Alfonsine Tables of 1521 have Rasalauge, and the original has {301} been variously altered into Ras Alhagas, Ras Alhagus, Rasalange, Ras al Hangue, Rasalangue, Ras Alaghue, Rasalhagh, Alhague, and Alangue.

The occasional Azalange has been traced to the Turkish title for the constellation; but "a universal star-name from that nation does not seem probable," and it is more likely that the Turks adopted and altered the Arabic. Ras al Hayro also has been seen for the star; and the Century Cyclopedia mentions Hawwa as rarely used.

The 13th century Persian astronomical writer Al Kazwini cited Al Ra'i, the Shepherd, from the early Arabs, which, although now a title for gamma (γ) Cepheus (Alrai), may have come here from the adjacent Raudah, or Pasture; the near-by alpha (α) Hercules (Ras Algethi), 6° to the west, being Kalb al Ra'i, the Shepherd's Dog; while neighboring stars, the present Club of Hercules, marked the Flock.

In China alpha (α Ras Alhague) was How, the Duke; and the small surrounding stars, Hwan Chay, a title duplicated at those in the hand.

PHASE 264 (SAGITTARIUS 24°): A BLUEBIRD PERCHED ON THE GATE OF A COTTAGE.

KEYNOTE: The reward which meets every effort at integrating into a social environment for those who remain true to their own selves.

The bluebird is a symbol of happiness, but also it refers to what one might call a spiritually oriented mind - to which the color blue relates, especially when a 'bird' is mentioned. A cottage is normally a part of a community, and the implication is that its inhabitant are well-adapted, either to the life of the community, or to their’ more or less isolated togetherness.

This is a fourth stage symbol, and it suggests that the essential technique for successful living is the development of a consciousness in which peace and happiness dwell. There is also a hint that GOOD FORTUNE is going to bless your life.

    Lonsdale:

    SAGITTARIUS 24
A statue of Isis covered by a transparent veil.
The one who lives inside is awash in colors, tones, and symbolic ritual displays of an extraordinarily precise attunement to the heart and soul of ancient wisdom. You are suspended in a long-ago time. So much of your being is still back there. The evolution of the world since the ancient times is neither acknowledged nor accommodated in any way. It all depends upon whether this exquisite gift of soul remembrance is honored or exploited. If it is exploited, which is so very tempting, the life empties out of meaning and value and becomes false and repulsive. If it is honored, the expanded faculties on tap become revitalized and find a fresh relevance. As the Divine Feminine reveals what we need to know and draws us to our utmost capacity, it is with an unfallen grace of sensing directly into the deepest parts of people and all they can become in the ancient future just ahead.

PHASE 265 (SAGITTARIUS 25°): A CHUBBY BOY ON A HOBBY HORSE.

KEYNOTE: The anticipatory enjoyment of powers one can only as yet dream of utilizing.

The horse has always been a symbol of power and, in many instances, of sexual energy. Until very recently the horse gave people a greater possibility of conquering more space and what that space contained. Mounted on his hobby horse and experiencing the to-and-frow rhythm of its motion, the well-fed boy unconsciously, and perhaps nowadays half-consciously, may anticipate the rhythm of the sexual act. In a sense it is also a kind of make-believe and growth through the imagination, but here – in contrast to what was shown in the symbol for Phase 261 – the imagination is active at the organic body level. There is something of an initiation in the play.

This is the last symbol of the fifty-third sequence of five. It ends in a mood of play, but it is a play filled with cultural expectation, unconscious though this expectation may be. We see here the FORSHADOWING of the mature experience of man/womanhood.

    Lonsdale:

    SAGITTARIUS 25
A small boat with no one in it. It is gradually drifting out to sea.
When life is a dream, not too much of selfhood is asked for or welcome. Ancestors, previous lifetimes, collective currents feed the dream, keep it alive. The self hugs a secretive outpost of neither being with nor being against. One of the remarkable things that happens is that spirit can speak and reveal much. One of the habits which easily proliferates here is to take no responsibility for anything. And one of the primal paths through is to drift deeper down in and to let all ego go, yet move with the soul as it is guided to each and every place it is meant to travel.

    Wright:

The history of the star Lesath

from p.371 of Star Names, Richard Hinckley Allen, 1889.

The two stars; upsilon (υ) Scorpio, Lesath, along with Shaula, lambda (λ) Scorpio; are at the tip of the tail of the Scorpion and right on the sting.

Lesos is Greek for sting, Latin has punctura scorpionis, "the sting of the scorpion".

Lesath, or Lesuth, is from Al Las'ah, the Sting, which, with lambda (λ Shaula), it marks; yet the English astronomer Smyth (1788-1865), who treats of these two stars at considerable length, says that the word is {p.372.} formed by the 16th century French scholar Scaliger's conjecture from Alascha, which is a corruption of al-shaulah. Lesath, therefore, is not a term used by the Arabs, who designate all these bumps, which form the tail, Al-fikrah, vertebrated twirls; they are formed by epsilon (ε), mu (μ), zeta (ζ Grafias), eta (η), iota (ι), kappa (κ), lambda (λ Shaula) and upsilon (υ this star Lesath), and it is supposed that the sting, punctura scorpionis, was formerly carried to the following star, gamma (γ), marked nebulous by the second-century Greek astronomer Ptolemy.

But this gamma (γ) is surely wrong; that letter really applying to a star in the right claw very far to the west of the sting,— as far as the make-up of the creature will allow. Still Burritt's Atlas of 1856 located it as the English astronomer Smyth (1788-1865) did. The Persian astronomer Al Biruni (973-1048 A.D.) wrote that lambda (λ) and upsilon (υ, this star Lesath) were in the Harazah, the Joints of the Vertebrae. The Italian astronomer Riccioli (1598-1671) mentioned upsilon (υ) as lesath vel potius Lessaa Elaakrab Morsum Scorp. vel Denneb Elaa-krab; and the 17th century German astronomer Bayer, Leschat recte lesath, Moschleck, Alascha, which we have seen for lambda (λ Shaula); but the proximity of these stars renders this duplication not unnatural.

The Chinese knew them as Keen Pi, the Two Parts of a Lock. The German astronomer Ideler (1766-1846) thought upsilon (υ this star Lesath) the gamma (γ) of Telescopium, but this does not agree with Bode's drawing of the latter.

At this stage we see the individual creatively expressing his own particular individuality. He takes the materials available in his social-geographical environment and shapes them so they reveal to other people something of his inner life and purpose.

This second phase in the fifty-fourth sequence is, as usual, in contrast to the first. The "flag bearer" symbolizes the selfless representative of a collective tradition or of national unity; the "sculptor," on the contrary, represents man as a creative individual intent on making his mark upon society. This is a symbol of man's capacity to transform raw materials according to his personal vision — thus a symbol of SELF-PROJECTION INTO A WORK.

PHASE 268 (SAGITTARIUS 28°): AN OLD BRIDGE OVER A BEAUTIFUL STREAM IS STILL IN CONSTANT USE.

KEYNOTE: The enduring elements in a society which reveal its ability to significantly link the genius of its individuals to the everyday needs of the collectivity.

This symbol brings together, as it were, the essential values implied in the two preceding ones. The mastery over material factors of a few imaginative and trained individuals enables their community to remain well-integrated and able to function easily in the best possible environment. The work of these sculptor-engineers allows their people to develop a relatively permanent culture. A tradition is built which enables men to link their outer nature with the highest vision their leaders can conceive and objectively demonstrate.

This third symbol of the fifty-fourth sequence also suggests the way in which the works of man can blend harmoniously with natural environment in producing beautiful and enduring shapes of profound meaning. Reacting against the ugliness of our commercial and chaotic cities and highways, today we tend to long for "wilderness." But the combination of natural beauty and human skill and imagination is the true ideal to strive for. As Keywords we might use the title of an excellent book by the architect Claude Bragdon: THE BEAUTIFUL NECESSITY.

The history of the star Etamin

from p.207 of Star Names, Richard Hinckley Allen, 1889.
[A scanned copy can be viewed on this webpage]

Gamma (γ) Draco, Etamin, is a double orange star in the right eye of the Dragon.

Eltanin, also written Ettanin, Etannin, Etanim, Etamin, etc., is from the 15th century Tartar astronomer Ulug Beg's Al Ras al Tinnin, the Dragon's Head, applied to this, as it also {p.208} is to alpha (α Thuban); the Italian astronomer Riccioli (1598–1671) wrote it Ras Eltanim. The word Tinnin is nearly synonymous with Thu'ban (α alpha is Thuban), and the 17th century German astronomer Bayer mentioned Rastaben as one of its titles, the Alfonsine Rasaben, and now Rastaban, "head of the snake" in the Century Cyclopedia; but in early Arabic astronomy it was one of the Herd of Camels alluded to at beta (β Alwaid).

The 14th century Arabian lexicographer Firuzabadi referred to a Ras al Tinnin and Dhanab al Tinnin in the heavens, the Dragon's Head, and Tail (the Nodes of the Moon, Caput Dragonis , and Cauda Dragonis . In Vedic astrology the North Node is refered to as Rahu and the South Node as Ketu.); but these have no connection with our Draco, reference being there made solely to the ascending and descending nodes in the orbits of the moon and planets known to Arabian astronomers under these titles. Primarily, however, these were from India, and known as Rahu and Kitu. This idea seems to have originated from the fact that the moon's undulating course was symbolized by that of the stellar Hydra; and had the latter word been used instead of "Dragon," the expression would now be better understood. But it was familiar to seamen as late as the 16th century, for "the head and tayle of the Dragon" [the nodical month also is called the Dracontic, or Draconitic] appears in Eden's Dedication, of 1574, to Sir Wyllyam Wynter; and even now the symbols, for the ascending node and for the descending, are used in text-books and almanacs.

Millenniums before this, however, it was of importance on the Nile, as it ceased to be circumpolar about 5000 B.C., and a few centuries thereafter became the natural successor of Dubhe (alpha α Ursa Major), which up to that date had been the prominent object of Egyptian temple worship in the north, gamma (γ this star Etamin) was known there as Isis, or Taurt Isis,— the former name applied at one time to Sirius,—and it marked the head of the Hippopotamus that was part of our Draco. Its rising was visible about 3500 B.C. Through the central passages of the temples of Hathor at Denderah and of Mut at Thebes; Canopus being, seen through other openings toward the south at the same date. And Lockyer says that thirteen centuries later it became the orientation point of the great Karnak temples of Rameses and Khons at Thebes, the passage in the former, through which the star was {p.209} observed, being 1500 feet in length; and that at least seven different temples were oriented toward it. When precession had put an end to this use of these temples, others are thought to have been built with the same purpose in view; so that there are now found three different sets of structures close together, and so oriented that the dates of all, hitherto not certainly known, may be determinable by this knowledge of the purpose for which they were designed. Such being the case, Lockyer concludes that Hipparchos (circa 160-120 B.C.) was not the discoverer of the precession of the equinoxes, as is generally supposed, but merely the publisher of that discovery made by the Egyptians, or perhaps adopted by them from Chaldaea.

He also states that Apet, Bast, Mut, Sekhet, and Taurt were all titles of one goddess in the Nile worship, symbolized by gamma (γ this star Etamin) Draco.

It is interesting to know that the Boeotian Thebes (Greek Thebes), the City of the Dragon, from the story of its founder, Cadmus, shared with its Egyptian namesake (Thebes Egypt) the worship of this star in a temple dedicated, so far as its orientation shows, about 1130 B.C: a cult doubtless drawn from the parent city in Egypt, and adopted elsewhere in Greece, as also in Italy in the little temple to Isis in Pompeii. Here, however, the city authorities interfered with this star-worship in one of their numerous raids on the astrologers, and bricked up the opening whence the star was observed.

Gamma (γ this star Etamin) lies almost exactly in the zenith of Greenwich, in fact, has there been called the Zenith-star (explained here); and, being circumpolar, descends toward the horizon, but, without disappearing, rises easterly, and thus explains the poet's line:

"the East and the West meet together."

It was nearer the pole than any other bright star about 4000 years ago. Its minute companion, 21" distant, at a position angle of 152°, was discovered by Burnham.

It was one of Al'Awa'id, "the Mother Camels" which was known as the Quinque Dromedarii. In the Arabic theme for this constellation the stars beta (Alwaid), gamma (this star Etamin), nu (Kuma) and xi (Grumium) in the Head of the Dragon represent four mother camels protecting a baby camel from the attack of two hyenas (eta and zeta, Nodus 1). The nomads camp located nearby (the three unnamed stars in the neck of the Dragon: upsilon, tau, and sigma).
