One major difficulty people face when interpreting charts - whether they are transits, natal charts or sets of synastry charts - is BIAS.
Personal bias is something that is a struggle to get past in any situation. We all have our blinders and we all have our stories and litanies that we like to replay in our own heads over and over ... attempting to match new situations to what we are used to.
The first step is knowing what your biases are and admitting them to yourself/ being honest about them.
How do you identify your own biases?
Have you ever felt that you received an extremely biased reading from an astrologer?
Jupiter might represent some biases that you might hold.
Past experiences with individuals with certain placements might create bias.
Stereotypes might be another source of bias.
Another source of bias might come from the assumption that the way your chart works or your own personal experiences would be the same as another person's experience.
What biases are you aware of in yourself? How do you get around these biases? Or do you just accept them?
Here is something I have been experimenting with when I have time:
When interpreting a chart I look at the synastry between myself and the person whose chart/charts I am looking at. This tells me what that person's affect on me may be and it gives an idea about the different ways that we might relate with each other effectively (or what challenges might be involved in our communications).
But this is my question for other people involved in astrology - I have only experimented with this method so far because I am concerned that this might amplify bias! On the other hand I would hope that it might help identify bias ... which is the first step of dealing with it.
What do people think about this method?

Re: bias in chart interpretation
Thu, July 16, 2009 - 10:30 AMHow does one get over the "bias" of their own aspects when interpreting someone else's chart? For example, how do I overcome experiencing Virgo Rising independently of having 12H Virgo Jupiter conj Asc & 1H Mercury when looking merely at that Ascendent? -

Re: bias in chart interpretation
Fri, July 17, 2009 - 7:40 AMLets say I am doing a chart for someone that I am interested in...attracted..is that bias....and if the chart shows harmonies between them is that bias or connections... -

that seems to be a question only you can answer...it really depends on the person and how they handle things... but the probability is high.

Re: bias in chart interpretation
Fri, July 17, 2009 - 9:26 AMWhat I would say is the harmonies are the harmonies ... no bias there ....
But how you interpret the significance of those harmonies could contain bias ...
One thing I would watch (just to watch it) is to make sure to include alternate possible interpretations like friendship/ business partners/ muse/ teacher roles beyond just attraction and to avoid a quick "yes" or "no" judgment about relationship potential.
I would try to think in terms of the influences you might have on each other and try (as hard as possible) to think of the shape of the relationship more than how "perfect" it is or isn't if you know what I mean ... and try to leave things open to the fact that the relationship will be what you shape it into and choose together ...
This is a good question, Brian!

I think you'd always be biased! The best way wud be to abandon astrology and just do things the normal way! Anyway a few squares is healthy for a good long term relationship! Keeps the passion and interest there! -

Re: bias in chart interpretation
Fri, July 17, 2009 - 9:47 AMNow I see where your going with this...wasn't clear to me at first...didn't absorb the OP...read it to fast...my Mercury in Aquarius problem again....Yea I agree...if your doing a chart for someone else then there is no bias...but when you interpet it for yourself..yea...true....personally I try not to do Synastry for myself...your dead on...I always try to see the chart as something that may seem to benefit me...one reason why an astrologer gets someone else to read there charts....Good Post...Like it...open minded...good stuff.
