Today is the 100th birthday of Albert Hofmann, the Swiss chemist who discovered LSD in 1943.
This milestone birthday is being celebrated in Switzerland with a conference on entheogens to be held this weekend. Information on the conference is posted at www.lsd.info.
The New York Times recently did a story on Hofmann and that is posted at www.nytimes.com/2006/01/07...offman.html
Hofmann wrote a book titled "LSD: My Problem Child" and cautions against reckless ingestion, but also believes that the compound holds keys that can potentially help humanity recognize its relationship to the biosphere. To that end, he regularly signs art prints to raise money for groups like MAPS (the Multidisciplinary Association fo Psychedelic Studies), Erowid and the Island Foundation.
Happy Birthday Uncle Albert!

Re: Albert Hofmann Turns 100 Today!
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 12:21 PMy'know, it's funny, in all the articles i read about hofmann, he's very guarded about being a proponent of psychedelic use in the same way that leary was. and he certainly wasn't going around dosing the kool-aid at his house parties the way kesey's crew did, but even with all of his reservations, it is interesting to see how he's gone from a guarded endorsement of the substances to being really out front about raising funds for all sorts of groups doing psychedelic research. i think as he ages he realizes that while "we" (the freaky deaky counterculture types) may not be the allies he'd have chosen to champion his research, "we" are promoting a much better vision for the future than "them" -- the social forces who would rather see psychedelics illegal and take it out of the therapeutic and artistic communities and put it under the umbrella of law enforcement.
he continually reasserts his interest in ecology and how psychedelics gave him a window into his youthful peace with nature and i think that's the key to understanding his relationship with the substances.
the term "entheogen" has become popular in recent years to describe a category of drugs that manifests god or god consciousness within. i think that hofmann's understanding of how the drugs put him in touch with ecology fall under the general umbrella of "at-one-with-all-of-life" and, therefore, the divinity of all life, and, therefore, the entheogenic properites of the drug.
once you accept that angle, it is tough to want to have people who use the drug be given lengthy prison sentences or endorse the practices of punishing people who are, quite literally, simply pursuing forbidden knowledge. -

Re: Albert Hofmann Turns 100 Today!
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 10:24 AMWell said, Shady...I am always interested to read your postings, it seems you always share very insightful and intelligent thoughts. I truly believe the concept of connection to Gaia and the unity of all matter is the number one thing that can help save this planet. I suppose it's only fitting then, that the discoverer of LSD would come to that conclusion, and we can only hope that other people eventually experience the same thing, and since entheogens can help people make that discovery, I guess it's only fitting that they are outlawed, as we sure know knowledge like that won't help corporations or the M.I.C. Anyhow, what a testament to the warrior spirit that Hofmann is alive and well at 100 years old, and out of respect for him and all he has done I think we are all obligated to represent a psychedelic way of life in a positive and upstanding fashion, rather than pure recreational use, for "fun". We have all been through that in younger days, but now, in the year 2006, it is time to truly unlock the power and use them responsibly for their true purpose. I am big on spreading the word on this...would love to hear that other people feel the same way. Love and light to all! -

Sat, January 14, 2006 - 9:39 AMmarco, i'm glad you made it. please give a full report. i spent my birthday in a bit of a funk over it, and all i can really say, somewhat cynically, is "thanks AT 40." not getting paid made it too much of a challenge to make it to switzerland.
i don't need to tell you that, though.
i just heard from mike that he's trusty's road manager. funny how we all know one another. give my best to senor blotterati mc cloud!!!
