AT 40 footage posted on youtube

i went to google and typed in "AT 40", pranksters and one of the first links was to video footage on youtube of a piece of the mutaytor's set at AT 40. the footage is posted here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Dh80CXK_cJE

it does not indicate just how colorful, costumed and dynamic the venue or attendees were, but it certainly gives a hint of how high energy the room was. bassnectar went over well, but the mutaytor definitely set the place on fire.

it's nice to (finally) see some documentation, even quasi-bootleg and poor quality documentation, of the event.
i'm very proud to have conceived of that party and pulling it off.

AT 40 came and went. Now what? What should we do with this tribe, both in the limited sense of this space on tribe.net and in the broader sense of the Tribe that we brought together in Vegas for a night of wild and wooly fun?

Thoughts, comments?

Happy 4/20! Buffalo politician calls for drug legalization - Radio Poll needs your help!

4/20/2006 - Happy 4/20 Everyone!

Wednesday the county executive, the chief politician
in Erie County, said that the rash of recent killings
requires a serious discussion about drug legalization.
The story is below but also, please go to the main
talk radio website and vote on their poll. I know
these are not scientific but they are reported and
they do get headlines. You can also write a letter of
support, to the editor of the Buffalo News and other
Erie county publications.

Heres the URL for the Radio station that is doing the
poll:

http://www.wben.com

Giambra advocates legalizing drugs
By ROBERT J. McCARTHY and T.J. PIGNATARO
News Staff Reporters - http://www.buffalonews.com
4/20/2006

Erie County Executive Joel A. Giambra said Wednesday
that a rash of drug-related killings in Buffalo over
the past few days should prompt a serious discussion
about legalizing some narcotics.

Giambra noted that the alleged killer of Sister Karen
Klimczak confessed that he was high on crack uh uh
when he committed the murder on Friday, while drugs
are thought to be involved in other recent slayings.
Drugs also are listed as the cause of many of
Buffalo's 56 homicides last year, according to city
police.

Any course other than some type of legalization
amounts to "pretending" that current anti-drug efforts
are working, Giambra said.

"Until we get real about it, this problem is going to
continue to build on the streets of urban America," he
said. "We have to talk about legalization."

Area law enforcement and narcotics detectives battling
dr ugs day in and day out were flabbergasted on
learning of the county executive's comments.

"He ought to take a ride around the streets," said Lt.
Joseph Leo, an 11-year veteran in the Lackawanna
Police narcotics unit. Leo said drugs "alter the mind"
of the user, creating addictions that feed crime and
lead to violence. Legalized or not, that wouldn't
change.

"What's going on out there is that people can't afford
their habit, so all they're doing is stealing and
robbing from family and friends or whoever gets in
their way," he said. "People can't afford what it
costs to buy a bag of crack . . . so, for $10 the guy
goes nuts."

Buffalo Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson also is
against legalizing narcotics. "Allowing for narcotic
intoxicants to get further entangled in our society is
not a positive and is not going to bode well for
anybody," Gipson said. "It just has catastrophic
potentialities."

Lt. Thomas Lyon of the Buffalo narcotics and vice unit
says his detectives see the tragedies drugs wreak on
families and neighborhoods all the time. It wouldn't
be any different if they were legal.

"We're in the trenches every day. We see the damage
the drug culture has done to neighborhoods and
people," Lyon said. "Doctors, lawyers, kids, people
from all walks of life who you'd never expect to see
huddled up in the corner of a crack house having lost
everything they ever had. Legalizing it is not the
answer."

Some national figures like conservative commentator
William F. Buckley and former Secretary of State
George Schultz have raised the issue of legalization,
while U.S. District Judge John T. Curtin of Buffalo
also has publicly discussed it. But Giambra said
Wednesday he believes he is the first local elected
official to raise the possibility.

"It's easy to sit back and pretend you can fix the
problem, but based on the number of homicides and
deaths we're seeing, the criminals are winning," he
said. "We need to look at what other countries are
doing and see what might be more effective than doing
what we're doing.

"I don't believe anyone looking at this nationally
believes that current methods to eliminate the problem
are working," Giambra added. "They have failed
miserably."

Leo attributes much of the problems to judicial
leniency at sentencing time, Gov. George E. Pataki's
recent rollback of the state's strict "Rockefeller
drug laws," and underfunding police narcotics
enforcement.

Despite those limitations, Lackawanna has realized its
share of success in the "War on Drugs," Leo said.
Parts of the city used to be "like a candy store" for
drugs, and with it came crime, he said. That's changed
dramatically in recent years with tough crackdowns on
dealers, users and houses peddling drugs.

"It's a lot better than it ever was out here," Leo
said.

The county executive offered no specifics on a plan to
legalize drugs. He also did not say what drugs should
be afforded noncriminal status, or how any new laws
should be enforced.

But he did say he will continue to discuss the
situation to stimulate some kind of new thinking. "I'm
just trying to stimulate a different kind of
discussion to get people away from pretending,"
Giambra said.

Another Voice of Reason in Erie County:

Former police captain from Erie county, NY calls for
drug legalization!

Peter Christ is a former police captain who spent
about two decades enforcing laws in direct compliance
with prohibition (aka the War On Drugs). Though a
police officer, Peter has never been shy about
speaking of the kinds of troubling situations he
witnessed firsthand while enforcing drug laws, both
against ordinary citizens as well as other officers.
Drug reform is hence a topic which is near to his
heart: he saw the ramifications of the War On Drugs
every day for many years.

Enforcement Against Prohibition)website:

Albert Hofmann Turns 100 Today!

Today is the 100th birthday of Albert Hofmann, the Swiss chemist who discovered LSD in 1943.

This milestone birthday is being celebrated in Switzerland with a conference on entheogens to be held this weekend. Information on the conference is posted at http://www.lsd.info.

The New York Times recently did a story on Hofmann and that is posted at http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/07/international/europe/07hoffman.html?pagewanted=1

Hofmann wrote a book titled "LSD: My Problem Child" and cautions against reckless ingestion, but also believes that the compound holds keys that can potentially help humanity recognize its relationship to the biosphere. To that end, he regularly signs art prints to raise money for groups like MAPS (the Multidisciplinary Association fo Psychedelic Studies), Erowid and the Island Foundation.

Happy Birthday Uncle Albert!

http://www.boulderweekly.com/calendar.html
PANORAMA PICKS3

The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test at 40 — The bus came by and I got on. That's when it all began...

When I heard there was going to be a 40th Anniversary Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test scheduled for liftoff on Halloween night in Las Vegas, I didn't know what to expect, but I knew I had to get to Vegas. My fiancée and I packed up the car and headed for the desert with our costumes—I, of course, as the devil, and my better half as an angel.

The event was thrown by Zane Kesey (Ken Kesey's son), the Merry Pranksters, and a few promoters with the ability to manifest the vision. The experience built slowly, with New Riders of the Purple Sage, a jamband from the '60s, serving as the launch pad. As I meandered through the costumed crowd I ran into my buddy Uncle Eddie from Dead Tour, and soon fell into a puddle. Next thing I know I'm munchin' on some fungilicious chocolates. By the time New Riders were winding down their set, I was winding up to the cosmos.

The Acid Test was a dynamic all-nighter, incorporating performance art; a video/laser/light show by Smoke and Mirrors, VJ Awiaz and Optical Deslusion; and music by various DJs and bands, the highlights being Mutaytor and Spun. The interplay of light, performance art and music was so visceral, fluid and erotic that it wrapped me in its folds and held me there enchanted, till the wee hours. The Merry Pranksters even got on stage at one point and did a really strange "Turn on Your Love Light" with George Wilson on the axe-kazoo.

After attending hundreds of raves, 100-plus Dead shows, and every other kind of psychedelic event you can imagine, I honestly have to say this was the best party I've ever experienced. The Test was part jamband, rave, Burning Man, Cirque du Soliel, costume party and a host of other ineffables all rolled into one very groovy and colorful onion of experience. They took the essence of everything I understood the original Acid Tests to be, and boldly brought it into the future.

There are whispers that the Pranksters really enjoyed being back on the bus. Could this be a new beginning? Well, only one thing is for certain: after 40 years, an Acid Test just happened, authentic and self-defining. And I of course passed it with flying colors.

—Fredstrong

the author, of course, did not check that the Prankster is George Walker, not George Wilson and the instrument in question is called an axe-a-phone. he can perhaps be forgiven on the second point as, to the untrained ear, it does sound an awful lot like, well, an axe-kazoo...

Prankster George Walker's AT 40 review

It was about as close to an Acid Test as one could hope for, in 21st century Vegas. With a large, enthusiastic crowd of costumed revelers ranging in age from probably illegally young (they served liquor, lots of it) to older than us, plenty of drugs (apparently, and cladestinely), loud music (too loud), and varied entertainment with spinners, hoopsters, hipsters, and generally flipped-out far-out freaks mostly enjoying the scene, it lasted through the night. I didn't, quite, leaving around 4:00 AM for the solace of the conveniently close, walking-distance hotel and sleep.
The Bus, with fresh engine intact, a 305 and not the 401 as told, was there with time to spare, and picked me up at the chaotic Vegas airport Monday afternoon. An early evening panel discussion including John Perry Barlow, Rick Doblin of MAPS, me, and another luminary who I didn't know (and whose name & orginazation escapes my failing memory, with apologies) was well received by an enthusiastic crowd, as we regaled them with tales of the psychedelic past, present, and future.

Then began the parade of various bands, including, briefly the Pranksters. As usual, a large part of the crowd was fooled into expecting us to be another band, until they very quickly realized that, as a musical group, we are terrible, absolutely awful, and so we didn't last long (nothing lasts!). As the crowd grew quickly restless, we quickly and gracefully exited the stage, leaving in our wake a sigh of relief. Later, many came up to me and said how great we were. I realized they love our act, but don't want to listen to it; in fact, most can't stand to listen to it. That was fine, as it made it easy: a quick hit and outta there. Other acts were well received, and all in all it was quite enjoyable, especially for those who could stand the incessantly loud music and crowded space. I found relief hanging around the Bus in the parking lot, which was surrounded by a much smaller, quieter, but still enthusiastic crowd.
All in all, a success.
Some things not like an Acid Test: a crowd too big for the venue; intense, pat-down security; $40 tickets; many evicted for drunkenness (one for digging the music with eyes closed ("you're asleep, so you're outta here!"); bars, upstairs & down, selling expensive drinks; incessant "entertainment" by a parade of too many bands; getting paid afterwards (a good thing!).
They were still selling tickets, with a line to get in, at 3:00 AM!

sounds like it went down real well, Shady. good going. turned out I
couldn't be there anyway. I smashed up my elbow and had to go to the
doctor on Monday. X-rays showed nothing broken but deep bone bruise
and enflamed elbow and huge swelling and pain so bad I've been
blonkered on oxycodone all week. Gotta come out of it because it is
cold and wet and I need to keep up with the firewood.

AT 40 Venue Change: Event @ The Beach

AT 40 has changed to a different location.

The event will now be held at The Beach

http://www.beachlvevents.com is the site for the new location.

This location will have much better sound and would require far less modification to make it suitable for our event.
