Im a newbie to hoop. I've been spinning poi for almost 3 years now, picked up contact staff, doubles, and a dabbling of other things but have never been able to get my wife to take an interest in the spinning arts. Hula hoops she likes! So I ordered a gold and blue hoop from Superhoopers and am eagerly awaiting it (for the wife AND for me). Hopefully I'll have my wife out in the backyard playing with me...and not fighting over who gets to use the hoop. hehehe.
Now, she's familiar with basic hooping, but not I. I'll be needing some practice. What's a good regimen for getting beyond waist hooping? Or even just some tricks to get the hang of waist hooping?

Re: Hi all
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 2:29 PMif you live in the atlanta area, come to one of Superhooper's classes at Jai Shanti Yoga in Candler Park. I couldnt do a thing with a hoop a year ago, and now am dancing with it and moving it all over the place and lighting iton fire and I learned all my moves from the hoop classes. Its a good way to meet the rest of the community too.
simple tips:
turn in the direction of the hoop revolving to slow down a trick and make it easier; thats turning to the left for most right handed hoopers...and put on some music and let the beat tell you what to do. Let momentum carry the hoop around you more than forcefully thrashing your body to propel the hoop. Let it hoop you...if you're bruising or working alot, you're trying too hard... -

Tue, June 24, 2008 - 4:39 PMI used to attend the poi classes with Pete up until my daughter was born, in March. But the hoop classes are kind of hard to sqeeze in. We live in Marietta and Monday evenings get trcky. Im going to keep my fingers crossed though, lol. Right now Im trying to figure out how to make the hoop stay horizontal and playing with spinning in both directions.
