If you are interested, I would HIGHLY advise coming to class. Experience with the Suhaila format is essential. So, if you don't and are interested in joining Lumina, get your booty to class now. Drawing from the wisdom body traditions of Pilates & Yoga, as well as extensive professional and personal experiences in the fields of Holistic Health, Dancer Rehabilitation, and Bellydance, Deb & Aubre combine forces to bring you this jam-packed weekend including:

-Core Yoga & Pilates for Dancers
- Experiential anatomy/movement labs
- Team teaching with Aubre & Deb
-Skills, practices, and embodied awareness to take your dancing to the next level
-Injury prevention and rehabilitation for common bellydance injuries.
-one-on-one attention.

This workshop weekend will assist you in radically shifting bellydance posture and technique, and freeing up new movement pathways to support healthy, embodied dancers. We will discuss injury prevention and self-care; learn ways of protecting overused areas in bellydance--such as psoas, low back, and hips, and deepen our practices to stretch, strengthen, and activate the body in preparation for bellydance. A great foundation for any level dancer, of any style bellydance.

Come develop a more connected conversation with your own body. Increase body awareness, core stabilization, and presence in movement, taking your dance to the next level, from amateur to artist.
All material will be directly applied to bellydance movement.
Please bring a yoga mat, a journal for note taking, and water bottle.

1-2: Pilates For Dancers Warm-Up (Aubre)
Learn basic Pilates principles and how to apply this work in creating a strong and stable body placement for dance. Pilates is also a great rehabilitation module for dancers.
2-4: Lower Quadrant: The Root of it All (back, hips, pelvis, sacrum & legs) (Aubre) From balance to stability and freeing the body for all the wonderful isolations of bellydance, Aubre will present exercises and techniques to understanding the kinetic chain and interconnected quality of the lower half. Including special attention to sacral stability while maintaining strong hip isolations.
4-6p: The Spine: The biomechanics of spinal stabilization, articulation, and extension/backbending, from both Yogic and Pilates perspectives. (Aubre & Deb.)

Sunday:
12-1: Core Yoga for Dancers Warm Up (Deb)
1-3: Upper Quadrant: The neglected area of Bellydance. (Deb)
Free up the neck/head, shoulders, spine, &sidebody to create that intoxicating look and feel of ridiculously slow, slinky bellydance; allow for sharper isolations; and create more fluid, articulated movements from the head to the fingertips. Focus will be on the importance and biomechanics of the shoulder girdle, and how it relates to everything you do in bellydance. This module will include lecture, experiential anatomy, and therapeutic yoga/somatic practice, with hands-on adjustments. All material will then be applied to bellydance posture, technique, and combos, with particular focus on arms, core, and ribcage.
3-4: Bellyrolls and Abs: Understanding and isolating the deeper core muscles for the smooth, fluid moves of bellyrolls and undulations. (Aubre)

I am thrilled to announce I'll be hosting Cera for two workshops on Sunday, September 27th, 2009!!!!

Funk Fusion Bellydance
11am-2pm

Funk Fusion Bellydance brings you Hip hop, Pop n' Lock, and Funk flava, with intense, high energy conditioning and drills. Our warm up will focus on layered isolations including syncopated body rhythms, layering two and three dimensional movements simultaneously, and traveling shimmy layers. Then we'll move on to funk fusion techniques and combos that you can use, deconstruct, or utilize to create your own! Come away challenged, inspired, and with lots to work on at home.

Movement Invention & Choreography for Bellydance
3pm-6pm

Movement Invention & Choreography for Bellydance is all about destroying boundaries, incorporating gestural movement, and working contemporary staging, costuming, and choreographic techniques into your Bellydance vocabulary. Our warm up will focus on developing movements that start in Bellydance and then take a sharp left, exploring space and growing outward from the center. Then we'll move into movement invention techniques, and begin to develop our own movements that we can use in creating combos and choreographies.
We will talk about working with solos, duets, and troupes, creativity on a timeline, staying organized, and working collaboratively.
Come away challenged, inspired, and with lots to work on at home.

Both workshops will be held at The Center of Worldance, 230 West Main St., Alhambra, CA 91801.

$45 for one workshop or $80 for both if prepaid by Sept 25th!!!

Vegas Intensive Update...

Ok folks...this is your official "heads up". There are a number of classes this
year the the Intensive that are at risk of selling out. In fact, there is only
one spot left for Danya's poi class and only a couple left for Sacha's Drum solo
class. If you haven't registered for classes, please do so right away. This is
true for performers and teachers who opted for workshops. Once a class is sold
out...it is sold out, regardless of whether you have a coupon code or not.
Please secure your spot in the classes you want to attend.

Additionally, our festival line up is now full. There is a waiting list that
has already started. Our Event Guide has already gone to print, so if there is
any changes in the line up, they will not be printed in the program.

Lastly, our room block is now officially full (171%) and we are past our cut off
date. If you did not secure a room, I can probably still get you one in our
block, but you will need to contact me directly so I can give you the direct
line to our sales rep. Also, I believe Selena Kareena is still looking for a
roommate, so if you want to share a room, that is a possibility.

Our tee shirts and water bottles have arrived. Our Event Programs are off to
print. We are on the home stretch. Remember, the festival and shopping are
free and open to the public. I am looking forward to having you join us. This
will be our best year yet!

Preparatory Group!!!

This is something I have been thinking about doing for some time...I'm so excited to announce the Preparatory Group!!! This group will focus on developing stage presence, dynamics, technique, emotional perspective, and a variety of bellydance styles to create kick ass dancers!!! There is such a jump from class to stage; this is my bridge between the two to safely and creatively build confidence for the stage as well as strong and intelligent artists. Heading home!

It's been a whirlwind and an amazing learning adventure. From Cairo to Luxor to Aswan and back to Cairo. I traveled almost the entire length of Egypt. Many stories to come. =))

I have been asked to be the Director of Volunteers for the LV Intensive 2009. I am looking for enthusiastic, fun loving people who want to take part in one of the biggest and best events Las Vegas has to offer. So many performers come to Las Vegas and witness first-hand the comradery and family like atmosphere at this event and a great part is owed to all the wonderful and generous volunteers we count on each year.

Additionally, volunteers get the added perks of taking some classes or attending the shows for free, and have fun. There are many opportunities to be involved in. We need people to be ushers,to help at the registration tables, and to check people into classes. We also need help running the festival stage, runners for vendors & performers, personal assistants to the teachers, etc. We'd enjoy having some "belly husbands" who want to help move, set up, and tear down equipment as well as dealing with technical aspects of the event. Day 1 in Egypt

My first full day in Egypt! It was hot and humid, but a lovely breeze kept things quite bearable. Today actually turned out to be quite nice. I stayed close to the hotel which allowed me to people watch quite a bit as well as nap. I'm staying directly across from the Sphinx and three pyramids, which is quite magical. Gouda is the owner here and a very nice man. I got the rare opportunity to sit outside with the guys and see the evening unfold. A variety of hungry cats meander through the streets. Sleek, thin, but strong. I'm starting to understand Egyptian driving in my observance, which is actually quite efficient although looks like chaos at first. They use every square inch of space on the road. Truly incredible. There is such a wonderful Egyptian pride and definitely a strong sense of community that seems to bring a hope and joy to an unsteady world. Everyone says hello to anyone walking, riding, or driving by. The road is full of camels, donkeys, horses as well as cars, buses, and bikes. It's the perfect combination of new and old. Jeans and traditional gallabyas. Obama has definitely created a great deal of hope here as well. Funny- his speech was given just across the street. Gouda told me the story of waving at him from the rooftop. Very cute. I tried a local falafel place for lunch (and had my leftovers for dinner). Actually Gouda sent me with one of his workers, so he dealt with everything for me. So I also got the Egyptian price and not the tourist jacked up rate. =) For 3 Egyptian pounds I got four full falafel sandwiches including salad and pickles. (1 to 6 exchange rate so about 50 cents.) It's fascinating to be here; see the pyramids with my own eyes, hear the prayers blast over speakers across the city, and the mix of traffic sounds. Love it! I have read descriptions of the prayers (which happen at 4am, noon, and sundown- although any good muslim must pray at least five times a day). And I always assumed they were more musical. But I can truly tell you they are waling. There is really no better way to describe it. It doesn't help that you can hear every speaker at full volume, all singing/chanting something different. It's very strange. Ah, a nice cool breeze just came by....It's intensely wonderful to be here. I'll try to write again soon.

Aubre's Core Fitness DVD

I know this DVD isn't brand-spankin' new, but I finally got a copy and I wanted to say how fantastic it is. If anyone is on the fence about buying it, I say go for it. I love that it's 30 minutes, because I have no excuse not to do it. I've been using it about every other day for the past two weeks, and my belly rolls are getting fabu. Thanks Aubre for such a smashing DVD! Now if I can just get comfy in a straddle so I can seriously amp up my glute squeezes...

H.O.T. is known for their skillful,multi-textured renditions of traditional Arabic music, as well as dynamic original modern arrangements. A typical set features soulful music from The Middle East and North Africa, including classics and folkloric music from Egypt,Lebanon,Syria, among other countries.

H.O.T. will be joined on stage by two of the country's top belly dance artists, Delilah and Aubre. Both women are not only incredible technicians but also engaging, delightful performers whose stage presence mesmerizes the audience. I just got back from another fantastic weekend in Las Vegas. This time I was able to attend two workshops with Suhaila, which was wonderful. Marisa is a lovely host (yes I'm biased, but she really is). And the party afterwards was so much fun. Britt and Marisa organize a party like no other. Love my Vegas peps. Huge hugs to you all.

I just wanted to say "thanks," Aubre, for recommending this book. Anyone who is wondering whether or not to check it out should go do so, post-haste. I tore through it this past week, and I am already noticing the way it has put a new perspective on certain things. I am really rational, so her writing style and practicality appeal to me a lot.

I love how you are always offering recommendations for music and ideas, Aubre. It's very generous! Some people really hoard their creative process.

Saturday, Jan 17th
12-1pm Open level bellydance class at The Center of Worldance (230 West Main St., Alhambra, CA 91801).
I'll be subbing for this one day only. I don't teach weekend classes very often anymore, so here is your chance.

Also tomorrow, I will be performing two shows at Cayenne Cafe (7169 Beverly Blvd, just west of La Brea) around 8 and 9pm. Another rarity. Intimate and beautiful space, solo raks sharki performances. Come hang out, have some great food, and see some dancing!

What an incredible evening! A full house of warm and loving faces, a cast of amazing artists, and an evening of so much fun, dance, music, and magic. I'm still recouping from it all.

We're completely reworking this show for next year, so this was a very special show for us. Thank you everyone so much!
