I logged on today and realized I haven't been on Tribe.net since November of last year... Okay I know I'm forgetful and suck at keeping touch but that's a long time even for me!

I've been super busy lol, besides chasing after a baby I've got a few new designs in the making. I'll be uploading them as soon as I get some pictures I am happy with.

I finally managed to redesign the garter flare pants to my liking. What I've come up with is the absolute cutest, sexiest thing I have designed so far... Pics coming soon! I just need to hem the two pairs I made.

The other new designs I'll be uploading at some point - a peekaboo vest (sort of like a modernized ghawazee with curly ends like my orchid petal skirt) Also I have finally figured out how to cover a bra in a reasonable enough amount of time to be able to offer them for sale. I am redesigning my cascading headdress - the new design is a bit more elaborate looking but simpler to make, more secure, and will be $10 cheaper than the original. I designed a belt to replace my macrame fringe belt, a cowrie shell fringe belt. I created the first one today and am very pleased with it. It is super simple to make, and thus I am gonna be able to charge only $40 bucks for it. Perfect accompaniment to a headband hairpiece, or actually any headdress worn with cowrie braids.

I have also been working on creating bridal accessories. One day I had the thought - what if you took my basic design for the cascading headdress, replaced the yarn with a long cathedral style veil, replaced the tribal jewelry with bridal jewelry, and used more corsage quality flowers in the headdress. That is how I wound up redesigning my cascading headdress - I couldn't get the current design to work with the veil and liked the new one much better!

Well sorry for being away for so dismally long, and I'll make sure to post those pics soon!

I got back from Rakkasah and it was great! A big thank you to the people from tribe who stopped by to see me... :-D I have some stuff left over and I am going to work on getting it up on Etsy. If anyone needs a hairpiece quickly, just ask! I might have what you are looking for in stock.

Also, bandana belts, and a new style of hairpiece are online - flower mini's, for just $10 each!.
http://www.auralynne.com/minis.html

I've discontinued a couple of things for which I don't get many orders, but there is a replacement available for most of them!

First, my barrette hairpiece has been discontinued, but if you were a fan of that style, may I suggest instead getting yarn hair falls, and a flower mini. (If you really like the cowrie shells I put in my barrettes, may I suggest getting some of my friend Crystal Kini's cowrie clippy bits and attaching them to the flowers.) A good replacement for my bun hairpieces is also my flower mini's. My sister and I are going to take some pics of my hairpieces one of these days - I'm in desperate need of new ones! I'll post them when we do.

My macrame belt has also been discontinued. I don't really consider my bandana belt to be a replacement for that, but I have in the works a new belt design - a cowrie shell fringe belt that I think I'll be able to sell for under $40!

There are a few things I have available now that I haven't quite gotten online yet. The belt and coin headpiece pictured on the main page of the website is now (finally!) available as well. Yarn hair falls without flowers (on ponytails) are available ($18 for one super thick or $20 for 2 thinner). The O-ring belt which matches my dragon brocade bodice is available for $89.99.

If anyone wants to preorder something not yet on the web page, msg me and I can invoice you. Thanks!

Thursday night my sister and I, like the blonde and blonde at heart sillies we are, went to Providence (1 hr drive) for a drum circle. Only trouble was, the drum circle was NEXT week. I was confused thinking it was the 22nd already (man did this month fly by!) And my sister thought the drum circle date was the fifteenth. So we walk in the space all decked out in our prettiness... and rows and rows of older people turn toward us with quizzical expressions. So that it wasn't a complete waste of a trip, we decided to hang out at the Providence Place mall for a bit.

I'm wearing my black corset flares, laced with red ribbon, and layered black and red tank tops, so after I removed my belly dancing belt I looked somewhat semi goth-ly normal. Andrea (Auryssa on here) however, was wearing basic flares, a halter tie top, and sleevelets in superbright, nearly glow in the dark turquoise! But I gave her my black tank top and she put that on to cover her stomach and we figured what the heck! It'll be an experience.

Our tally for the evening: Well, we lost count of the stares, two whistles, one evil glare, one utterly hilarious raise-eyebrows-with-thumbs-up from an Oriental guy, and a bit more ice cream than normal from the guy at Ben and Jerry's.

Over all, a great night!
Pics of Auryssa's costume coming soon. We had just finished it Thursday!

I've been holding off making those designs because I have had a devil of a time trying to figure out a way to cover a bra that doesn't include lots of hand sewing. I HATE hand sewing, and I don't like the actual fabric and reinforcement being hand sewn, because I feel the machine sewn stitch is stronger.

Well, today I just completed the most difficult part of the covering of the bra (the cups and the sides are done, I only need to sew on straps and connect them in the front) Stretch velvet over a hard-cup underwire bra (the really thick stiff kind that's great for tribal!) And I did every bit of it on my machine. I'll make a tutorial when I do my next bra - for all you fearless people out there! (fearless of breaking your sewing machine by running over an underwire, that is :-/ )

Now, since I have a mental block against hand sewing, to get my sister to decorate it for me! Woo woo! Pics coming soon!

A couple changes: My Aunt Kim and my Mom are now making my Renaissance line. They are both wonderful seamstresses with over 25 years experience - my Mom taught me how to sew. The bodice is available in a second choice of fabric now too - Chinese dragon phoenix brocade! Within the next couple of weeks Kim will be creating the matching belt and the first bodice - the belt is a different design than my Renaissance belt. I posted a sketch of the design here, and once we have the model, we'll get pictures up. Here's the URL for the Renaissance stuff:

The entire basement is gonna be used for my business, so it'll be awesome to finally have all the space I need :-D

Other than the basement (which was the selling feature for me) the house had a good sized kitchen (I love to cook and bake) and 3 bedrooms plus a small office (yess no more ugly computer cords in my dining room!) There's a front and back porch which are nice mostly for insulation from the outdoors and a decent sized above ground pool that the little guy's gonna love come summer!

(hmmm I'm excited cancha tell?)

BTW, I did finish with the tie tops. Both my sister and I have been horribly sick lately, and didn't want to take pics of our red noses, but now I'm basically over it and we're going to a drum circle tomorrow nite - I'll make sure to get pics of our costumes there, which will likely include the tops!

It's going to have both elastic and fitted seams so it fits just right and stays where it's supposed to - and the pattern will only require cutting out and sewing together 3 pieces of fabric - which means I can price it extremely reasonably!

http://www.auralynne.com/intlorder.html

Yes, there is a reason for this. I keep getting orders from people in foreign countries who use my shopping cart. When it first happened, I put in more links telling people not to. Now with all the warnings I have written, I really don't see how anyone could make it as an honest mistake. Not to mention the orders I get like that are always tiny orders, and the hassle I'd have to go to to type out a letter explaining why I need the extra 2 to 3 bucks isn't worth the 2 to 3 bucks! So I've decided to avoid the hassle.

But, as I said, no change for everybody here! You'll just have to access the international order form from this message instead. :-)

Nope, haven't had the baby yet. Should only be a few days now - better only be a few days, or I think I may scratch my poor red itchy stomach to death... (bad Kristi) We decided on a name we both like a lot finally (not an easy feat between me and my husband) - Tristan. The nursery is for the most part finished (not decorated but the furniture is in place at least) and ready for baby.

I am waiting until after the baby comes and I know how much time I will have to start any big plans for the website, but I've got a couple of helpers now, so some things will be happening a lot quicker. My friend Ingri is doing cowrie braids, and I now have stock of 22" in almost every color, so I'll be able to get those out a bit quicker. I've also got 3 new colors in 22" - burgundy, teal, and dark purple! I'll take pics and post soon...

My sister is staying with me currently, and will be making and posting headdresses on ebay... They'll probably be up this weekend!

Well, you haven't heard from me in a while! I've been insanely busy trying to keep up with orders, get ready to take a few weeks vacation in North Carolina with my family, and organize and condense my gobs of craft stuff so that it fits in the front closet, so that I can turn my craft room into a nursery.

I've also finally managed to train my friend on making the cowrie braids. I was immensely pleased and somewhat surprised to see that she is just as picky as me - I picked up a bunch of them from her just the other day, and each and every pair was perfect, and it felt great to think of all that work that I wasn't doing myself, lol. Oh, and I've dyed 3 shades that aren't on the website yet - burgundy, dark teal, and dark purple. Pics coming soon!

My sister and I are going to be working on bra and belt sets. We will start with the simplest first, so she doesn't get bogged down -
http://tribes.tribe.net/auralynne/photos/89b25b0d-4798-4db0-b0b0-69734aefdebd
there's the original sketch of my design. Bra will be bikini style halter (not triangle) top with soft cups, and they will be available undecorated in all the fabrics that match the pants.

There is going to be a change in time for custom made costumes. I'll keep my time for hairpieces down to 1-2 weeks, but larger items like pants and renaissance stuff will now take 4-6 (which seems to be the standard elsewhere) instead of 3-4. I will do my utmost best to finish with the orders I've already gotten within 4 weeks, and if you have a performance that is at least 4 weeks away when you order let me know and I'll probably be able to fill it.

While I'm in NC, I will still be doing any headdress orders, and I'll also bring the fabric to make any orders I recieve prior to leaving. I'll be back within 4 weeks, so I'll be able to finish with any orders I recieve while there upon my return. Just keep in mind that rush orders are not available for the month of September. Thanks!

Ooh, by the way, my sister and I and our friend are going to a renaissance festival later today, so we'll be sure to get lots of pics and post them!

Happy dancing everyone!

Sage green cotton/lycra
and Lilac cotton/lycra.

My camera refuses to take a picture of the sage green and the lilac that is the right color, so I am going to make the colors in Photoshop and post it.

Then I also am working on getting a stock of funky slinky prints! For anyone not familiar with slinky fabric, it is a acetate/lycra knit that doesn't snag horribly, is reasonably durable (8 oz weight) and is super super stretchy even with funky metallic glitter prints all over it!

I have: Purple glitter slinky, which is a dark plum purple with lighter pinkish purple glitter flowers on it. Will post a pic soon!

Oh, and the best news of all: pants made in any of these cool fabrics are the same price as stretch velvet; if you want some, just order on my website and put your fabric choice under "special instructions."

The black I have a lot of, but the lilac and sage and purple slinky are limited quantities, so if it's too far after today when you order, you may want to contact me first to make sure I have some left!
http://people.tribe.net/auryssa/photos/d182b574-4ff5-4697-9234-a7914cfca1e4
... something that I do not and will not ever have the patience for! But isn't it wonderful? She uses dental floss to string it - and it is as flexible and swings just as nice as the fringe you get from egypt or turkey or wherever but lasts literally forever! Sometime we're gonna stitch some to some duck and weight test it just to see how many pounds it takes to break. Maybe sometime we're up late and getting punch drunk, LOL!

But anyway, she really is more of a cabaret dancer, and you all know I like tribal costuming, so if we really collaborated on designs at least one of them should be tribaret. So who all likes tribaret?

I was wandering around online (as usual) yesterday and came across this store that sells the most gorgeous hand beaded, sequined and embroidered trims you'll ever see! They totally inspired me to design a costume. You can see my... very... quick sketch in the next pic, as well as a sample of some of the trims this place carries. I called my sister and for about the next 20 minutes we were having a conversation that consisted mostly of squeals and "look at this one - on page three - the fourth one down."

The bra and belt sets would be made of stretch velvet - the really plush pretty shiny stuff, and the fringe would be two layer - with Czech drops on the top short layer, and probably 5 to 6 inch seed bead fringe that ends in a Czech bicone bead. For anyone who doesn't bead, Czech beads are a lot like Swarovski - very gorgeous and sparkly - except not so expensive as to add 60 bucks to the costume!

The trims come in varying lengths - all of them enough to bead at least one set of bra and belt, and some of them enough to have matching accessories like armbands and headband (fun, yes??) And each one would be a one of a kind creation! If you saved up for one of these you'd be the only one in the world to have one! And sometimes we'd vary the style of fringe to the style of trim - for instance, I am picturing the black and silver trim on the bottom with black seed bead fringe - ending in silver coins for the top short layer, and ending in little jingly india bells for the bottom layer!

So my question: I know all about the market for tribal. Everyone does tribal! And everyone usually prefers handmade stuff since it's much better quality. We're hoping to complete these sets and sell them for somewhere in the neighborhood of $250 to $300. Remember, hand beaded fringe that lasts forever! How many people out there do tribaret, and do you think people would like to save their money for a really stunning true blend of tribal and cabaret styles?

(For any that don't know, he's navy on submarines so he gets to go underwater for 6 months in a tin can with a hundred other guys every couple of years.) He'll actually only be gone 3 months cause they're bringing him home halfway thru so he doesn't miss baby, but we just bought her a coming here plane ticket 'cause she's going to stay till baby and after a bit to help me keep up on website stuff...

Here she is on tribe! She's just as good as me at making costume stuff, but I'm the designer, and she's the one with the patience for handsewing:
http://people.tribe.net/auryssa
All of the costumes she's wearing in pics she's made, including beading her own fringe.

So while she's here we're going to get together and make costumes! Bras and belts are the main thing I want to get her started on, since they take too much hand sewing pour moi. I've already designed the first style and got some of the stuff needed to make them - jacquard ribbon with paisely designs and chinese coins (the ones with the square hole in the middle) and I'll post a sketch and pics of the materials soon!

And she'll be helping me with everything and Mr. stops-in-the-doorway-and-stares-askance-at-mess will be gone so I'll have more time to make stuff constantly. I also want to start on bikini style bras (halter top like the new style that came out a year or two ago) made of stretch velvet, cotton lycra and slinky (to match pantsss!) And also I want to make choli's with built in swimsuit bra-cups - so they are backless but don't make ucky triangle boobs, and the swimsuit style bra cups are flexible enough that a bra could still be worn over them...

So I wanted to give you guys a preview! Combining my designs with my sister's patience... It should be a wonderful thing!

Domestic Priority mail isn't changing much, my prices with handling included will only go from 4.99 to 5.99. Global Priority mail, and basically every other international mailing service are now combined into Priority Mail International, which is the only option for shipping packages to other countries. And rates for it are increasing to almost double. :-(

For instance, my shipping to Canada used to be 8.99 - now I am going to have to increase it to 16.99. I'm going to change my shipping rates on the 7th of may to reflect the post office's changes, but I wanted to give you guys a heads up! If anyone in another country is thinking of ordering something small from me like a hairpiece (not pants - I can't make them in a week!) you may want to hurry up and order before the 7th so you won't have to pay the exorbitant shipping prices.

Well, I'm pregnant! Those of you who've read my blog already know! And for everyone who read my blog, I've since discovered that if I eat a big bowl of shredded wheat (the big biscuit, NOT frosted kind) each morning and stay away from any and all sugar the nausea goes away almost entirely.

My intuition, (and my Mom's, and all the little old-wife-taley signs) tells me it's a girl so I'll most likely have a little mascot and be making some TINY headdresses and costumes soon! :-D

Sad news for you guys is, it's got me thinking about some stuff. One, do I want to keep doing this business for the rest of my life? Or do I want to be forced to go back to work for someone else for a steady income? An emphatic no to the second question.

I did a really good job figuring time and materials when I opened this business and set my prices. What I didn't figure in, however, is the time I spend in various things - like posting on ebay, answering customer questions, updating the web site. I also didn't really figure the money I spend on these same types of things - tickets to renn fests and belly dance fests to run around and pass out cards, ebay fees, computer software, office supplies... I knew I'd be spending money on all those things, but it didn't dawn on me that it would be that much money (25% of my gross income last year) and since a lot of it was stuff I do for fun anyway it didn't seem all that important to figure it in to my prices.

Well, now with baby on the way, and me hoping to keep playing with flowers after hubby is no longer in the Navy and collecting money for rent each month - I'm having to take the money I make with auralynne.com a bit more seriously!

So I wanted to let you guys know that over the next 8 months there are going to be some price increases to the stuff on my website as I add in the overhead. It's not gonna be a lot - probably not more than a dollar at a time, and probably not much more than around 5 dollars total to most items. I've compared my prices with my competitors - and after adding the extra I will still be priced more reasonably than most comparable items. But I wanted to let you guys know in advance, so if anyone is planning to order sometime soon you may want to order sooner rather than later! :-)

I'll leave 'em alone the rest of April to give you guys time, then probably the first increase will happen early to mid-may.

I'm also working on making a bunch of colors for stock and opening an etsy store! I'll post a link when that's done.

As always, thanks a bunch for your support and understanding,

I confess, up until now I've been wrapping the yarn around the arms of my computer chair, which happens to be exactly 22".

So I went to Lowe's and got some PVC and a bunch of connectors, then sat down on the dining room floor with my trusty ruler and handsaw (I'm scared of jagged edged blades, by the way, so I totally feel like superwoman now) and it didn't take long at all! And not only is it easier, and faster than the old way, it cost me a grand total of $3.75 to make this thing and now I no longer have to get off my butt to wind yarn! Totally freakin awesome!

Those of you who joined the tribe when I first made it know of my loooong search for material for the pants. So - here's the deal. I finally got the samples from the wholesale supplier. It's supposedly 11oz cotton spandex. You'd think it would be thicker than the 7.6 oz cotton spandex I got from a retail supplier, right? At least, that's what I'd assume. In a perfect world, I'd be able to request nice thick cotton spandex, and someone would carry it. Well, it's apparently not a perfect world.

So there's good news and bad news. If anyone wants pants, I've decided to just get my fabric retail and get swatches to be sure it's high enough quality. So all colors are available. But, since I'll just be getting random fabric from random stores, it means the pants will not all be made from the exact same fabric, and some will undoubtedly be better than others. I didn't want to do that, I wanted to be able to buy thick, uniform cotton spandex from one supplier, but apparently said product doesn't exist unless you are a huge buyer like Melodia. That's all I can think of anyway!

Oh, and if anyone wants pants made from stretch velvet, most colors are available.

That's all! Please give me input, will it be that terrible to have fabric in varying quality? I'm kind of bummed about this, to tell the truth. I've always been able to find all the supplies I've looked for over the years, at least since I got internet, so this is a first... :-(

I've been silent for so long I just decided to post a random update! I'm working on incorporating the new stuff into the web page, and of course I can't just do the simple thing and add it! I'm sort of redesigning it - and I'm making some changes in what I offer!

Change #1: different length options for hair falls. My hair finally got longer than my falls, and I missed being able to add a few inches to my "every day" hair when I danced, so I made myself some longer falls. Then I thought some of you guys might want some like that too! The three lengths will be 14" (mid back length) , 22"(current / waistlength), and 30" ( butt length - hehe I loooove my long hair)

Change #2: options where you can click a drop down menu to select the color of bead (ex, silver or gold beads on the headband, and silver or gold ends on the cowrie braids.)

Change #3: new products: Pants (of course), tie on tops, belts, the new hairpiece (which I don't know what to call by the way...suggestions?)

I made cool celtic looking design thingies for the pages too - I posted a screenshot of the home page so far! Everybody lemme know what you think? Any other suggestions/ ideas while I'm at it? Thanks!

So they're finally available for sale.

The first style I don't have the pic of yet. It is the plain version of what you've already seen. No decoration, legs a full 1/2 circle flare, 1.5" elastic waistband, custom made to your measurements. Price is $65. I've got a call in to my sister to send me a pic, since she has one. I'll post it when I get it!

The second style:
http://www.auralynne.com/images/pantsblack1.jpg
Price will be $95. Elastic waistband, legs 1/2 circle flare, custom made to measure.

The third style:
http://tribes.tribe.net/auralynne/photos/b0edc27b-d121-443b-8ea0-d9e47a691b5a
Price with overskirt will be $109. Price for just the pants will be $90. Legs almost full circle flare, elastic waistband, of course custom made to measure.

Available fabric:
http://www.auralynne.com/images/samples.jpg
These colors are closeouts from my supplier, which I can order by the yard. I especially like the one on the bottom right, the stripes are about 1" wide. I think that would look adorable to do horizontal stripes on a plain pair of pants.

http://www.auralynne.com/images/stockcolors.jpg
These are stock colors which I must order by the 70 yd bolt. I will offer all of these colors eventually. If you want pants in one of these colors, I can do it now if you order 3 pair in the same color or if you get with 2 other people who want the same color. Get on my tribe on tribe.net to coordinate this with other dancers!

3 step sizing:

Step 1 - Choose your basic size from the sizes below:

XS
Bust: 29-33
Hips: 33-36
Waist: 23-26

S
Bust: 33-38
Hips: 36-40
Waist: 26-31

M
Bust: 38-43
Hips: 40-45
Waist: 31-36

L
Bust: 43-50
Hips: 45-51
Waist: 36-43

XL
Bust: 50-58
Hips: 51-58
Waist: 43-51

Step 2 - measure your inseam. Measure from crotch to floor on inside of leg.

Step 3 - measure your crotch height to determine your best rise. Sit on a hard chair and measure from the chair between your legs up to your natural waistline at smallest point. Below I have given average measurements for each size range:

XS - 9.8"
S - 10.2"
M - 10.8"
L - 11.4"
XL - 12"

I offer 3 rise options, med rise, low rise, and super low rise. If you are significantly (1 " or more) below the average, you should order super low rise. If you are significantly above the average, you should order medium rise. There is 1 1/2 inch difference between each.

Okay, I think that's all the info... Feel free to tribemail me if you have any questions. Thanks!
The supplier who was supposed to be sending my samples apparently doesn't want my business, because, again, I have received no samples. I am giving up on them.

I have samples on the way from a retail company. They should be here by next Tuesday. I am thinking it will be worth it to pay more for the fabric and avoid the hassle of dealing with wholesale companies. Customer service sucks in the wholesale industry! So I'll let you know when those get here.

It's hard to find one that carries enough of the different kinds of fabric that I'd like to use. Maybe I'll have to give up and go with several different companies.

I am also making a plain pair, which I also intend to offer for sale. Once my fabric comes, I should be done with both of those in a couple of days.

So I'm trying to make a choli - with a built in push up underwire bra. Easier said than done, it turns out. The pattern has to fit perfectly and pull in all the right places so that the top actually provides lift. After 3 tries in a practice fabric, I finally was happy with the fit. So I made the choli and the pants with the satin ribbon lacing in my pic (the pants turned out perfect, by the way) and the choli gaps in the front! It's miniscule, but I have to fix it. And I've decided it'll be easier to make a new one than take this one apart. I think the top would fit someone a bit more well endowed than me perfectly. So if anyone who is probably about a 34C would like a choli for nothing more than the cost of materials, let me know!

So I get to remake my choli, which I can't even do until I get the bra from ebay to put in it. Grr!

I will post pics of those in progress as soon as I start on them. Right now I am waiting on fabric I've ordered.
