Hi there!
I have just this day discovered hooping after watching this: au.youtube.com/watch incredible video. I found some instructions online how to make my own hoop, popped off down to bunnings and BAM a brand spanking new hoop for me!
I do have some questions that I was hoping someone could answer......
First, I feel I may have made the hoop too large, I read that a good beginner size should be between the navel and nipples, my hoop comes up above my nipples.....will this affect my hooping? I realise I have only been at this for all of 2 or so hours, but I feel that if the hoop were to move a little faster, I could master the motion more easily. At the moment, I feel very un-coordinated and I cant keep the hoop up for more than a minute.
Second, i dont think my hoop is perfectly, perfectly round, will this affect it's motion?? And it is also quite light and bendy - will I want it to be a bit heavier and stiffer?
Finally, any tips on motion? I know that I should be rocking my weight front to back on my feet, rather than "chasing" the hoop around, but I feel very jerky and ungraceful atm.
Thanks so much!

Re: Beginner, halp!
Thu, January 1, 2009 - 4:58 AMHi Kally.
Regarding your first question about size i do think that your hoop may be a little bit to big my favorite hoops come just up to my hip bone but i have been hooping for a fairly long time and I’m not very wide round the middle. For most beginners I usually recommend a belly button high hoop.
Other than that you just need to practice practice practice, The Human body is very clever and you will find that the more you hoop the more your body will refine the action almost to the point where you don't need to move at all. So don't be afraid to move around a lot when you are just starting out.
For your second question about the shape and flexibility, The Shape does not matter too much you will find that most hoops have a flat spot where their connector is but it should not cause any problems unless there are actual kinks in the hoop. Flexibility is very important, A hoop that is too flexible will be really difficult to use and you will find your self working a lot harder to keep it up.
What kind of tube have you used do you have currently?? The kind I like best is the Irrigation tube with the blue stripe running length ways down the tube.
Oh and regarding your hoping action technically you should actually be working towards a circular motion coming right from the center of your whole body. This way you are constantly pushing the hoop around the whole circle rather than just when it is at the front and back or either side. Using a circular motion with feet just inside shoulder width will really help you when you come to learn other on body tricks. This all said it can be quite difficult for beginners to “Get” the Circular motion straight away but it is something to keep in mind and work towards. Other than that I can’t really give you any other tips with out seeing your action. But good luck :)

Thanks so much for your comments and advise.
I made the hoop out of some irrigation pipe that I got from Bunnings. I was aware from the instructional site that I was on that the best was 160psi with a 3/4" diameter, but there were only 2 choices of pipe at Bunnings and it didnt list their PSI, lol. And yes, the pipe is VERY bendy, I cant bouce the hoop and I can squish it up very easily. I was thinking today of ringing around some irrigation stores to try and find the exact pipe that is specified.
Also, do you use weighted hoops? I have read that a hoop weighing between 1-2 pounds (.75g - 1kg) is great for both beginners and experts.
Thanks so much again ^______________^

Re: Beginner, halp!
Fri, January 2, 2009 - 5:20 PMHmm does sound like you may not have the best kind of pipe. THe really good kid wil have blue stripe through it. I can find it at my bunnings here in canberra but they have only just recently started selling it. Actualy i'm not sure what psi it is but it is the same kind most australian hoopers use.
As far as weighting hoops i'm not to keen on the practice. For my begginners i usualy put a few layers of tape on which adds a little weight but i never put any thing inside the tube or excessive layers of tape. I think that it is a bit risky and could make you more prone to injuring your self also things like rice or water inside a hoop will actually work against you when you move from just waist hooping unfortunatly.
Let us know how you go with the tube..

Wed, March 11, 2009 - 5:02 AMI dont know where you live but I went to hula hooping fever at SPAN in Thornbury run by Hayley which was really helpful. Its still on Tues 7.30-8.30 I dont think its running 2nd term but youd have to ask. Nothing beats having someone watch and correct you, though I also found online tutorials good esp Safire
Happy hooping!
