"Let's build more roads !" ...

hardly seems the right answer to congestion on our roads... not from a practical view (roads will just choke again as the population expands), not from a economic one (costs of parking, petrol, cars, maintenance, insurance, etc) and certainly not from an environmental perspective..

The extension of the Eastern Freeway is well underway www.seita.com.au/pages-sup...03_800.htm but will it put more people on the road ? Where will all the extra people park in the city ? What will it do to the environment ?

Whenever I used to drive up the Eastern from Doncaster Road to the City I used to look at the huge median strip and think one thing. Train. The land is there.. and just before the Hoddle St exit there is even the rail bridge that you could connect it to.. is anyone thinking beyond buses in Melbourne ? And the light rails out to Vermont and also Mill Park is great - but they lack the speed and capacity of train .. they seem a little tokenistic and short sighted.. but better than nothing. One thing about people - is they like convenience.. and a train up the Eastern Freeway would work on so many levels. Convenience. The Environment. Cost of Travel to commuters..

What do you think of this ?

Do you have any brainwaves on public transport and general urban design to make our city more livable ?

I heard once that 40% of the city's space is taken up by car related space.. roads, parking etc. Only 40% that's not enough! Lets build more!!!! More more more I say!!!!!!

No the only way is PT. There is no other way. I lived in Tokyo, 20 million people. The only way is PT. And their PT is fucking amazing!

Check out this map of Tokyo's rail and subway...

They move everyone around so easily. I mean its the whole population of Australia in one city and the whole of Japan could easily fit into NSW.

We have to build a much better PT system. The only trouble is we need to duplicate lines to allow for express trains. In Tokyo they have express, semi-express and local trains but rely on having duplicate lines, or at least points where the express trains can pass the slower trains. We dont seem to have allowed the space to do such a thing, though I see they are duplicating the point near the junction of Hurstbridge and Epping lines so that there is no longer a bottle neck before clifton hill station.

I also saw an ace idea... Community Bike Schemes

Amsterdam White Bike Program en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comm...le_program where you can just pick up and drop off bicycles around the city.

I often think on my way to work on my bike that everyone in the inner city should ride to work. Its really easy and way more fun than crowded PT. Why wouldnt you? Its easier than you think, you get fit, there are heaps and heaps of bike tracks in Melbourne. We do need more though. Its free. Its great exercise and you get to explore the place you live.

I heard the City of Sydney is looking into the bike thing, but Im not sure how hot the bike paths are up there? Sydney peeps?
