As we are all aware, there are plenty of expensive, never go on sale period patterns by folkwear and others. But there are ALSO very close to period patterns by Simplicity and such that only need small alterations to become VERY period. I think we ought to create a site or something for people who want period clothes, but are not that sewing savvy, and need a regular, cheap pattern with easy instructions to follow
example:
Butterick pattern #B4827 is a woman in a cotehardie with princess seams. The idea of princess seams is allowed under the theory of the ten gore dress. The only non-period thing is the zipper. So we could add at the end :do not sew in zipper. some sort of instructions pertaining to lacing holes instead.

I think that we should all compile a list of those patterns and see if we can't get a cohesive site together

I have been trying to decide how my new kit will look and how I will make it as "Period" as possible. Do you have to create your pieces as exact replicas of things found? Does all my metal work have to look like the hand full of photographs you can find in books? Does my trim have to match that of trim found in grave digs?

What if I have studied the metal work and recreated the methods to make a reproduction piece and then using that skill and knowledge and period method I create an original piece? Is this piece "Period? What if I study how card weaving was done during a particular time frame and used these methods and designed a pattern that is not a replica of a found pattern, is this piece "Period"?

This led to a post by a friend, Erik The Bard, Satan from Hell Night at Pentwyvern, who sells corsets. He has been selling at Gulf Wars for a number of years, but this year he was denied merchant space since his corsets were judged by the merchant autocrat to be inappropriate. Just this evening this led me to a thought. I attend a number of juried art shows. Perhaps someone in the SCA ought to jury merchants. For instance if you are a merchant selling turn shoes at an event you could request a visit from the judges. They would peruse your shoes and provide them with a rating, either red, yellow, or green. Red would indicate that they accurately portray an SCA period pattern. Yellow would indicate that they accurately portray and SCA period pattern and are made of SCA period available materials. Green would indicate an SCA pattern, materials, and construction. Of course another ranking system could be devised such as approved, silver, gold, or something of that sort. This would allow judged merchants to hang a sign out front indicating that they sell juried merchandise. The judges could provide a form letter listing the items which had been juried and the rating they received. What are other people's thoughts in this regard?

I have been part of the "half naked tribal women" debates for a while now. We are totally non-period, we know it, and while the general populus doesn't give a crap, there is a decent percentage who think it is bullocks.

I now give to all who love kuchi pendants, an Answer. In SCA the period is technically defined as PRE-1600 western hemisphere. so that includes all the way back to cro-magnon man ,if you really want to. But big dumb men aside, THAT official time definition now allows the inclusion of these wicked awesome "pectoral pendants" from 7thc BC Greece. Although gold only, they have obvious similarities to the highly popular kuchi pendants.

I have posted here only one example of these, as that is the only one I found, when boredly flipping through a mythology book. If anyone feels like searching more, and heavens knows I will, please post them.

Someone in another tribe posted a link to a nice rant about the chairs and what he perceives they're doing to the club, and some of the negative effect the 21st century is having on the SCA.

Much of the gist of his commentary had to do not with mundanities but with "peer pressure". Not "Peer pressure", mind you, but the influence we used to have over each other. "Excuse me, m'lord, but would you like a mug to pour your ale into?" That sort of pressure. In the modern era of PC everybloodything, it's now considered boorish to try to pressure others into better behavior, better gear, etc. I wish I could say I disagree with his assertion. I wish I could say that it was still ok to give folks a gentle hard time about their kit and camp, but instead we're expected to be sensative to their needs and failings, and maybe they just can't afford a good scrap of cloth to cover their ice chest or store-bought folding table with.

Now we're expected to do nothing more than "lead by example", show people how cool it is to dress well, have a period tent and period gear for it and the like, but I think this is crap. Well, half crap. Being an example is the carrot, but there needs to be a stick, too. A gentle one, mind you, but a stick nonetheless.
The name is from a Dutch morality play from the first ten years of the 16th Century and presented in the play as a very common name. The context for the name being mentioned as a very common name is not in a sarcastic context at all and is used as a nickname in the play for a name that is painfully common in research (with a plethora of spellings to choose from).

In researching, I have found a name that sounds like the desired one (but is spelled rather differently with a different meaning) from the 13th C and the desired name being mentioned repeatedly in a family tree after the year 1621.

Now, I know that literary references are generally a big "NO" for names, but I tend to see that as names from non-period literature. How do people feel about period literature as a basis for names (especially when the person submitting the name is able to translate from the original Middle Dutch to modern English to assist the book heralds?)

Just curious.

As I was bopping about in renn boy's clothes at a Pennsic Party last year (dressing as a boy did wonders for not being constantly hit on...yay!), a Great Lady who had received a laurel for her work in the realm of cosutming told me an interesting story. She claimed that, in Venice during the renaissance, there was an problem of young women dressing in their brothers' clothing and brawling in the streets at night. And, as a result, sumptuary laws were tightened.

Is anyone else aware of such tales? Maybe you know of where I could go for further clarification or documentation about such things and maybe get at least a documentable decade?

See, there is a tounament held at Pennsic on the rapier field...the "Accurate Accoutrement" tournament and, being a woman who fights, I would love to have a proper, documentable reason why I would be dressed in boy clothes and fighting. I would like to make fighting garb that would properly reflect the location and time for when this issue mentioned very casually by the laurel and be able to present documentation for the tournament (along with a proper fighting style proper to the decade and location).

Thanks!

I have been able to find only small bits of information and that is mostly on metal work and ships. I would like to find information on textiles and clothing styles of the area and time. I am also looking for armor of the area. I know there was trade with the Greeks and Romans. It appears that it did not have a history before the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Well, not a history anyone is writing about. I take that back the Jutes and Cimbri get a foot note here and there.
