It was truly one of the highlights of the night (even though I know my dancing was horrendously rusty rofl). Watching my husband's stepbrother nervously squirm while you played with his cell phone was just glorious. So much fun! Thank you for giving me an oppurtunity to dance as well despite aforementioned rustyness.

To those who may have an upcoming wedding, Ava does an amazing job. Like I said, her performance was truly the highlight of the night, especially when she got everyone up dancing. Total blast. Will post pictures as soon as I have them, the ones the best man got are a mite blurry... and the other photographer friend was just sitting there slackjaw through the whole thing rofl. Have to wait for the real ones!

This dance class will demonstrate how to interpret melody into movement. We will understand how to dance to a vocal song vs. an instrumental. We will study Maqam; the Arabic music system that determines the mood of the song based on the musical scale and note collection. We will also practice the art of Taqsim, improvised musical melody and its corresponding dances. Karim plays live music on the Buzuq to demonstrate how a dancer and musician synchronize with eachother during an Arab style improvisation. The students will practice interpreting the instrumental music into movement and personifying the mood of the music.
PERFORMANCE & HAFLA:

ALL LEVELS - RHYTHM FOR DANCERS:
10am - 12pm : $40 before Mar. 15 : $50 at the door.

Sunday, April 5 - Plaza de Anaya Studio, 524 W. Broadway Road, Tempe AZ 85282

A dancer's immediate connection to the music is the rhythm produced by the Tabla and percussion. Karim teaches each rhythm using the three-sound clapping approach. Karim then performs sample rhythms on the Tabla. Students will learn each rhythm by name, "dum-tak" vocalization, and clapping. Afterwards the dancers will learn choreography segments to help gain bodily control with the sample rhythm. This movement workshop is perfect for any dancer who wants to better understand what they are dancing to.

ALL LEVELS - DANCER/DRUMMER COMMUNICATION:
1:00pm - 3:00pm: $40 before Mar. 15 : $50 at the door.

Sunday, April 5 - Plaza de Anaya Studio, 524 W. Broadway Road, Tempe AZ 85282

Students will learn how interpret sound into movement by aligning body parts and motions with drum sounds and riffs. The six-part drum-solo will be explained, theme by theme. Students will then perform to any combination of these 6 major drum solo themes. Students will learn how to both lead and follow the drummer by maintaining the common language. Improvisation skills will be encouraged, and the daunting prospect of dancing to a LIVE drum solo will be demystified. This dance workshop can also be configured to include drummers as well.

A big loud zagareet out to Ava & Yumi LaRosa and their dancers for putting on a FABULOUS show!

Mujeres. A beautiful, artful display of belly dancing and flamenco.

I LOVED, LOVED, **LOVED** the opening duet with Ava and Yumi (accompanied by Eric Zang).... sorta-kinda "When Cultures Collide in Denim." Totally unique. And then on to alternating presentations of Flamenco and BD. It was so much fun to watch! Oh,and Aurora... it was FAB seeing you in action again. You are as beautiful and graceful as ever.

What can I say about Yumi LaRosa? She is the tiniest little POWERHOUSE of a dancer I've ever seen. She must weigh 80lbs soaking wet but you can FEEL her presence via shockwaves when she dances. She has the grace of a gazelle with the power of a lion, all in a cute, tiny little package.

Now, Ava. Dear Ava. The personification of beauty, grace, technique, all with a sense of goofiness that brings her back down to earth with the rest of us. A serious dancer. A serious performer. A serious performance... and yet she's not afraid to inject her sense of humor into what she's doing. I stared. I laughed. I zagareeted. I yelled out "OPA!" (yup, that was me). What didn't I do? BLINK! I didn't want to miss a nanosecond.

And I cannot forget the ridiculously talented Beatmaster Eric Zang. His intricate fingerwork on whatever "thing" he happens to be playing never ceases to amaze me. I think he can play more instruments than I can even name! So, some well-earned YIPS out to Eric.

So thank you Ava, and thank you Yumi, and thank you Eric and Gaetano (flamenco guitarist extraordinaire), and thank you to ALL the dancers who looked like they were having so much FUN up there. It was a pleasure to watch.

When is Mujeres II coming out? ;o)

Can you believe it? December 29th and the schedule is done!!!

Now I know a few of you are going to be irritated because there will be classes you want to take the conflict with each other. I am offering my apologies in advance. *sigh*...if only I had 2 full weeks of classes to fill...then we might have no conflicts. heehee.

Additionally, just because the schedule is done does not mean that I have all the bios/photos/& class descriptions from everyone. Nor is the shopping cart finished. So, for the moment, just the schedule is all I can offer. I know it's a teaser, but it will have to suffice for the moment.

Those of you who have already registered, as soon as I have the shopping cart finished, you will get to actually pick your classes. You will have first dibs!!

I previously stated that once the schedule was done that the price was going up to $295 for the weekend. Well... I also said it wouldn't be done until Jan. 1st. So this is your big chance to sneak in under the radar and register for the Super Early-Bird special. Payment plans are still available and you'll get first shot at the popular classes. Don't miss out...register today!!
As audiences wander in they are greeted with sights, sounds and scents evocative of exotic destinations, worlds away, and of times forgotten. From the rich looking textiles and decorations from other countries, to the sounds of worlds coming together under one roof, audiences will feel as though traveling to mysterious, foreign lands. Wander through the mini bazaar to barter, haggle and bid on unique objects d'arte from artisans and vagabonds.

Each Bohemian Nights showcase kicks off with a free mini bellydance lesson to familiarize the audience with this art form and to incite excitement for the dance jam later. Then, Bohemian Nights becomes a two hour-long showcase of dancers, ranging from student performers showing off what they've learned in classes, to semi-professionals desirous of more exposure, to special professional dancer guest stars who will light up the night. Some performers will dance with props such as swords, Chinese fans, fire, veils, skirts and more. After each event, the dance floor opens up for all dancers, whether in the show or in the audience, to get up and take part in an open-floor bellydance soiree, into the night. Performers from the show come out to dance and migle with the audience and to do a meet and greet. The showcase becomes a party for all to participate.

These events are for 21 and over crowds only, as the venue serves liquor. Come hungry too as the menu has tasty treats from appetizers to delicious grilled burgers.

A portion of ticket sales will be donated to a charity or used to benefit a local business selected by NATIUM World Dance, with a different charity or business selected for each show. Raffle tickets sold will also benefit these select organizations, with all proceeds donated to that charity or business. Gratuities and tips are always appreciated, a portion of which may also be donated to the charity or business selected as well.
Shimmy, but only on the right leg, weight the right leg, now do hip fig. 8s with the left hip, but wait, do it staccato.... ok, add an upper body undulation.... now add the lower body undulation to the upper body undulation, OH... and don't forget arms...and keep doing that staccato fig. 8!!

Hello Ava fans!

I originally joined this tribe because workshops with widely known dancers can be hard to come by locally and I wanted to find out what folks liked about her. I don't have dial up and so I was unable to view any dance clips. Everything I heard here was good, so I went ahead and shelled out the dough for the weekend.

Now, after two days of her workshop, I can see why you all love her! She's a great dancer (I've never seen anyone shimmy like that before, no wonder they measure her shimmies by the Richtor Scale!) and a great gal, I recommend her as a workshop teacher to ANYONE!!! and if she comes back to Ontario I will definitely attend (evidently she has some more combos that she didn't want to overload us with, but I'm one of the crazy ones who love that kind of overload...)

Anyway, thanks Ava for a great weekend, I really enjoyed it...hope to see you again up in the great white north!
**hugs**

ps - don't forget to post those workshop notes you promised us ;)

pps - my sympathies to Audra, who had her vehicle broken into after the show and had her personal bellydance "kit" stolen, what a harsh crash after a great show - I hope you still come to Isis' workshop to vend next year!

This way he knows I'm thinking of him and that I love him. Well, being gone for a month presented a challenge. After many teas sweet treats I finally decided..... He still didn't have his wedding ring and he didn't know that I recently recieved a call from the jewlers saying that it was ready and waiting for me. Giggle. I picked up the ring along with an extra ring box.

After a few hours one afternoon, scissors, a beauty magazine, blank paper and a glue stick, I came up with the ransom note:

Hostage: (picture of hand with ring on it)
Ransmon: Come and Get it.

Why am I giving you all this history, you ask? Because if you check out my personal profile you will see E proposing to me during Boom Boom Bellyfest 2005. I decided to turn the tables in Leicestershire.

After my performance, sweaty and out of breath. I picked up the hidden box and asked him to marry me! Nevermind that we are already married-ish (don't ask), I thought it would be fun.
So that explains the pictures I've posted.

She's fab when she dances with Black Opal, but to see her do her "own" thing was just so much fun! And Jade (a.k.a. Ava Jr.) you're just super-lovely and also much fun to watch. Ellisha? OMG! I haven't seen her in action in a performance EVER! She was wonderful. And you have no right being that cute!!! ;o)
Just wanted to start spreading the word about a great event featuring our dear AVA FLEMING...

Bahaia's HOT Dance Camp featuring AVA FLEMING, Bahaia, & Jeanette
October 12-15, 2006
Camp Arrowhead, Hunt, TX
Over 10 hours of class, 3 evening shows
Registration $400 by September 15, $450 if paid after
fee includes all classes, shows, scheduled activities, meals and lodging
payment plans available: 6/mo @ $69.17 (includes $15 service fee), or reserve your spot with a deposit of $100 and balance of $300 paid by Sept 15

This is a super-fun retreat! Think rustic, but not rugged - even glam girls can handle this camping experience. The cabins are screened and have electricity. The showers have plenty of hot water. The meals are served in an air-conditioned dining hall. The dance hall where we have classes and shows is full of good energy and fresh air.

We roast marshmallows, go hiking in the hills, swimming in the river. We have a henna party and decorate t-shirts. Some of the campers decorate their bunks. There are vendors, a swap meet table, a massage therapist. Oh, and there's dancing too! We 5 hours of class each day, 2 on Sunday. And every camper gets the opportunity to dance in one of the evening shows.

We don't have much up on the website this early, but keep checking back for details...

for those of you that don't know me, i'll say a little something:

i love food.
and
until this trip, i've never owned a camera.

my life is centered around my favorite restaurants, what i'll be eating for the next meal, and when will i be eating again.

since i've been here my goal has been to try loads of traditional foods, aka spotted dick, learn the difference between our favorite four letter words, sleep in as much as possible, and figure out how to use a digital camera.

here are my current favorites of all 4 things:

food: the cheese is amazing. cream teas, bangers and mash, mushy peas, broad beans ( not dude beans), clotted cream (really good fattening stuff), and Pimms. oh, I can't the fantastic "toastie! (a toasted cheese sandwhich)

i told you i liked food.

my new favorite words:
ballicks
bladdered
whingey
crikey
and... toss (i'll let you try to figure that out)

i think ballicks and toss are the best. the first actually kept my in laughter for about 10 mintues.

as for sleeping in, everyone here knows i'm not a morning person.

and now i'm trying to figure out how to take pictures with my new digital camera! i have some , it's just trying to figure out what "memory card error" means, and how to get it fixed. If any of you know, please pass on the words of wisdom. It's a good thing I have two of those little things!

off to bed.
Stressed.

and - don't ever misplace your luggage tags when going abroad...

I reached my connection and changed airlines. I didn't have tags, and when they called the Phoenix airport, well let's say the computer said I was traveling with NO bags, not the two I checked. I would just have to wait and see if they showed up in London!

tee hee - the adventure of it all.

The last time I tried to travel to Europe I was stranded in NY due to 9/11. Yes I was there for that.

well that is the most of it for now. I've been to Bath, a proper Pub, eaten spotted dick :) taught 6 hours of workshops, and I'll leave the rest for another posting. I'll try to get some pictures up while I'm here!

Workshop topics are:
“Traveling Transitions”
Traveling got you stumped? Do you feel as if your momentum stops in order to get moving? We will review basic foot patterns and layering hip movements to use across the floor. Most importantly, we will examine what it takes to create a fluid transition from a stationary movement into traveling.

“Music Theory/Stage Performance”
Learning the basic structure of Middle Eastern music enables you to improvise and choreograph better. Add stage dynamics and audience relationships to create inticate movements without complicating things. Combining basic musical theory with stage dynamics gives you the freedom to become a multilayered dancer. It helps unstick the “what do I do next?” button.
