I am wondering about kabbalistic theology of Angels.
Does Kabbalah mention names of Angels and their functions?

Re: *~Angels and Kabbalah~*
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 8:02 AMThere is quite a bit about angels in Kabbalistic literature, 72 names of God each have of a corresponding angel, there are books on the whole angelic hierarch. Unfortunately there is a lot of confusion as the western Qabbala, Cabala, which merged Egyptian, Greek, Arabic, mystical traditions, and Christian philosophical concepts into classical Kabbalah has a lot of angelic literature also.
Hope that helps
I look forward to other answers

Re: *~Angels and Kabbalah~*
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 9:29 PMAll of the sephirah of the tree life have angels ascribed to them. Godwin's Cabalistic Encyclopedia is a cool reference book. -

Re: *~Angels and Kabbalah~*
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 4:32 PMthere is a meditation/visualization for the 4 archangels, Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel.
before the visualization.....
each of these angel names are actually hebrew. "el" is a divine name or one of the names of god. so....
Michael or Micha el = "to be like" "god"
Gabriel or gabri (derivative of gevurah) el = "strength of" "god"
Raphael or rapha (derivative of rephua) el="healing of" "god"
Uriel or ur i el ="light of" "god"
also
think of these 4 archangels as your protectors, your bodyguards....these are NOT cute little angels with cute little "campbell soup" faces....
in the visualization,
you would call on Michael to be on your right
you would call on Gabriel to be on your left
you would call on Raphael to be at your back
you would call on Uriel (again the angel of light) to be at your front lighting your path
after which you are surrounded by the 4 archangels.
this is a good visualization before bed and also if you are ever in a place where perhaps you might feel a bit unsafe, like walking on a deserted city street late at night. sometimes I surround myself with the archangels before getting in the car or before boarding a plane.
there is another step to visualization which is once you are surrounded by the 4 archangels, imagine the shekina (the divine presence of g-d, usually portrayed as female) descending down over your head and surrounding you in divine light.
I don't remember offhand the origin of this visualization, but there is a hebrew chant in which the 4 archangels and the shekina are called upon similarly to what I've described here.
being surrounded by archangels can be an empowering experience, feel free to give it a try
like any meditation or visualization it is mostly about your intention and your level of concentration -

Re: *~Angels and Kabbalah~*
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 4:47 PMThe source is the "bedtime shema", the kriyat shema. You can find a visualization version here: www.clalrabbis.net/jliving_unit1.htm
Wesoteric folks usually would ascribe this to the Golden Dawn "Lesser Banishing Ritual of the the Pentagram" (LBRP). This of course, was derived from the kriyat shema as well.

Re: *~Angels and Kabbalah~*
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 10:36 PMI recommend the book "Gnosis of the Cosmic Christ" by Tau Malachi. It discusses Kabbalah from a Gnostic Christian perspective, and one of the great features of the book is the detailed descriptions of the archangels associated with each sefirot.

Re: *~Angels and Kabbalah~*
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 12:49 AMArchAngel MichaEL and Chesed
In the Jewish, mystical Tradition of Reception (Holy Kabbalah) the ArchAngel MichaEL is the angelic presence connected with the sefirah of Chesed, which is our Ayn Sof Kabbalah Community Sefirah of the Month. MichaEL in Hebrew may be translated as Who Is Like EL. While EL may be translated in more than one High and Holy Understanding, I will emphasize here in this moment MichaEL's likeness unto the Divine in terms of Loving Kindness. How does MichaEL manifest loving kindness? As one of the Highest Messengers, (in Kabbalah all angels are messengers of the Divine) he is a Guardian Angel, a Protector, and an Advocate. All of these roles, ArchAngel MichaEL fulfills out of Love for the IsraEL~ Lights and out of Love for the souls of all Humanity. So when in need, one may hope for the protection of ArchAngel MichaEL.... However, it must be High~Lighted that all is according to the Will of Ayn Sof. There are no intercessors, no intermediaries in Jewish Kabbalah. Let none of us make the mistake of abdicating our own Response~Ability and direct Holy Relationship with the Infinite. No other being can stand in our place to shield us from our own Tikun (Healing and Transformation) which is a vital part of what the Infinite desires for us. We must always remember to honor the Source of All and never attempt to circumvent the Divine Will or to be confused into praying to a sefirah or an angelic messenger instead of to the Source. When we pray for help, protection, advocacy and love, pray to the Ancient of All Ancients, pray to the Source of All that Is. First we Praise the Holy Ancient One, then we Thank Ayn Sof in advance, and then we make our Request (Tishbachot, Hodaot, Bakashot). If it is the Will of the Infinite, perhaps we will be so blessed that a High and Holy messenger Who Is Like EL will become our Guardian Angel, sent from the One that is the Source of All....
Light and Blissings to you in the Mystic Hour,
Alyjah
