Thanks for an awesome workshop at Tribal Caravan, Ayse. I was tickled to finally get to take a workshop with you, and it was even better than I thought it would be... and even longer, too! I had to run at the end to get dressed to perform, so I didn't get a chance to thank you in person for stretching me out and giving me new ideas.

I just wanted to let you all know that Ayse will be in this show. It's to the beautiful music of Tim Rayborn and she'll be dancing with Katie & Monica on this one. If you want to attend you should buy your tickets soon! I just bought mine!

here's what I copied from Tim Rayborn's tribe:

Folks, these shows *will* sell out, so if you want to attend, please get your tickets early! Don't show up on the night of either event, hoping to get in, because it likely won't happen.

Brava in SF will be including this on their mailing list of more than 3,200 people, so consider that if you want to attend the SF show. I'd much rather have my friends be there than total strangers!

Buy them now at these links:

King King in Hollywood:

www.ticketweb.com/t3/sale/S...ventDetail

Brava in SF:

virtuous.com/event/3579525217/

Just think of all the dance deliciousness you'll get to see in one show:

Tempest
Atash Maya
Desert Sin
Mira Betz, Hannah Romanowsky, and Holly Shaw
Ayse Cerami, Katie Kay, and Monica Fernandez
Urban Tribal
Blue Damsel
Shawna Rai (NatyaHara)
Frederique (Belly Groove)

All dancing to the music from my new double CD (which will also be on sale at both shows).

So, go get your tickets now!

Hey all I realize that Julie posted a notice about the Sept 8 event location change, but just in case you don't look at that...
we are dancing at Froggies in Topanga Canyon on September 8th because of Kava Dume closing : (
So it's free to get in there's a great restaurant, stage, & full bar...it's a beautiful place and we have some awesome guests to help us party
Jessica of Nubian Divas
Kashmir
Subee Djinn & more!
Froggy's Fish Market & Restaurant 1105 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd
Topanga, CA 90290
310-455-1728
The show is from 8:00-10:00 and there is no cover charge, it's still a fund raiser for She'enedra/Sisterhood so we are counting on the generosity of the audience ; ) This restaurant has a great stage and is a cool hang-out. Great fish & vegetarian dinners, casual dining. Full bar. Froggy's is located IN the town of Topanga Canyon.

What did you guys think of the Sisterhood's performance and more particularly, Ayse's solo?

Let 'er rip!

Introductions

We were at the Tribal Fusion Fair last month, and a couple of people came up to me to express how thankful they were that Ayse was their teacher. Of course I gush over her talent whenever I can. She is, after all, my sister, but after I listened to person after person praise her gift, I thought, well, what the heck!?! Let's put a tribe together and gush all together!!!

I like to think of myself as Ayse's first student. Though, I'm certainly not her best student. When she got back from Arizona, gosh what has it been--ten years ago?--she didn't really want to be a teacher. She wanted to dance, but not as a soloist. More than anything, she wanted to be a part of a troupe. Ayse's always had that sense of community and cooperation that I see reflected in her work still. She immediately set off to find girls who'd be willing to dance with her, even if she had to teach them how to dance first.

She took up classes at the Arts Councel Center and would just sit there alone for the first couple of weeks, dancing by herself because no one knew she was there.

In the beginning, she danced solo at a couple of events and to my horror, she insisted that I dance with her at one event at Moorpark College. It was a dance concert produced by Rene Baum. We were the only bellydance performance, but we were a huge hit. As flattered as I was, I knew that I didn't do much to make us a success. I danced the easy parts with Ayse and let her do the big complicated stuff in a magnificent solo.

Then she taught as a guest instructor for a chapter of Mecda, and it all started for her. She'd teach in my mom's garage, at the Art's Council Center, anywhere and everywhere. Her students soon became her co-conspirators... Jenn Osborne, Katie Kay, Monica aka Dangerpants, etc. Suddenly, Sundara Varna was born.

Now, she's venturing off in a new chapter, co-directing the Sisterhood Dance Collective with Katie Kay. She got herself accepted into the Bellydance Superstars, is starting her own dance studio, Modern Gypsy, and only God(dess) knows what else.

I'm proud to call her teacher, friend, and best of all, sister.

I love you, Ayse.

Name Change?

As I was saying in another thread, Ayse begged me today to change the name of this tribe. She's a little embarassed by all the attention, I guess. So, I'm asking for some potential names.

Let's hear everyone's ideas and then vote!

I guess "Fearless Followers of Ayse" is out. How about "Those Slightly Smitten with, But Not Entirely Devoted to Ayse." Haha.

More seriously, how about "Friends of Ayse?"

i thought this was deserving of it's own topic.

truth is i gush to ayse personally ALOT about how thankful i am for her-- but saying it to all y'all is good too! when we're out i tell anyone i introduce to her "this is my first teacher..." then she tells me to stop and blushes.

without ayse i would be somewhere totally different. i now am lucky enough to consider bellydance my profession, and without crossing paths with jenn and then aysh...where would i be?

somewhere in the back of my mind i hope that ayse understands what it means to have professional students under her-- i think that's a big deal! when my first student goes pro i'll feel accomplished! but truthfully i'm sure ayse's insane modesty probably stops this thought from ever poppin' in to her head!

but yes, ayse i am thankful to have you in my life-- as my friend, teacher, co-facilitator in the sisterhood (which i never could have started without your support!) and my girlfriend who doesn't put out......my only road-trip buddy who can travel for 5 days on $20 bucks like me and not give it a second thought, with no showers, no idea where we'll stay when we get there and getting lost--- the only one who can do workshops with me for days straight, spead all our waking hours at a festival, and then go dance at night.....get up in the morning and take a class!

how our conversations ALWAYS turn to our students, an upcoming show, new music, our travel schedules, costuming, the studio, dance-drama, or what dancers we admire. you've created a monster-- one who consideres her self a kindred spirit, but maybe it was fate....

i have alot to say, but pretty much it comes down to the fact that i love this woman.

hmm...am i ever a fan of ayse?! This woman has taught me so much, has been there for me during some very rough times. She has also inspired me to dance my cares away, but to also incorporate my cares into the dance. My favorite times are when ayse comes to my house and drinks tea with me. When she drinks wine with me...when we have feasts together...and of course....when we dance! I love you aysh more than you know!

I think that Ayse's choreography is inspired! I love watching her change it in the middle of rehearsals........well, I sort of like it. But it is so fun to watch her brain wrok and I still haven't figured out how she seems to "see" us all like a chess board from above. (my opinion).
Anyway, Ayse certainly has had to squish a big bunch of all of us onto small spaces at times and there doesn't seem to be an end to that any time soon.
I am always excited to see what she comes up with next.
Thanks Ayse!
xoxoxo,

Choke Ayse

Have you ever sent Ayse an e-mail and thought, "Why Choke Ayse? Does she have a death wish? I don't get the joke."

Well, although we grew up speaking mostly English at home, because our mother is Turkish, we did dip into Turklish quite a bit. (You know, kind of like Spanglish, but with Turkish.) There were certain words that I never learned in English until I was an adult, words like: cantalope, persimmon, pomegranite. To me they were just kavun, hurma, nar.

To this day, if you're invited into our home, you may be offered karpus or cay instead of watermelon or tea.

You get the idea.

Also, when someone sneezes, we usually say, "Cok yasa (chok yasha)," instead of, "Bless you."

The C in COK is supposed to have a line on the bottom making it a ch sound. So it sounds a lot like CHOKE in English, but means MUCH or A LOT.

YASA is supposed to have a line on the bottom of the S making it an sh sound. Ayse has the same S. Yasa means LIVE.

Live much, or may you live long, is what we say when someone sneezes, and the sneezer replies with, "Sende gor," or "May you live to see it."

Yasa...Ayse... Sound similar? Ayse's high school friends always thought so.

So, when we'd say, "Cok yasa," Ayse's friends would start giggling and lunge for her throat, "CHOKE AYSE."

The joke stuck.
