So many people have been signing onto this tribe lately so I wanted to share some writings on the benefit of massage away from the heart.

Leg Massage
Prana Touch Ayurvedic massage is a focused full body oil application that emphasizes moving blood and prana from the center (the nabhi marma or dantien in TCM) of the body towards the extremities, when appropriate from the standpoints of Ayurveda and Western medicine.

The center of the body houses the heart, navel, sacral and root chakras. The sacrum and navel are given special attention during the massage as these powerful areas house large reserves of prana as well as our higher self in the form of kundalini energy. Massage strokes directed away from the heart are performed with gentle pressure and serve to enhance the circulation of blood and nutrients to all parts of the body.

Benefits of Massage Away from the Heart
• Benefits all srotas, especially the pranavaha srotas which move prana into the circulatory system.
• Benefits the seven dhatus which are nourished by prana moving out of the digestive system.
• Apana vayu (downward moving prana) is stimulated which aids in detoxification and elimination.
• Activation of vayus stimulates nadi function.

Background
The legs and feet are replete with numerous marmas representing mini-chakras at the joints. Ayurvedic massage involves circular strokes over the joints like the hip, knee and ankle so that the whirling vortexes of energy found there are properly stimulated. While activating marma points, circular strokes move lymph (rasavaha srota), encouraging both venous and arterial blood flow, and stimulating the nadis.

The long bones of the legs are stimulated with effleurage strokes using a full palm contact, increasing circulation and benefiting the srotas.

Contraindications for Massage away from the Heart
Downward strokes with pressure on the legs should be avoided when a malignant tumor is present for risk of spreading the disease and when one of the contraindications for massage exists, especially acute inflammation, varicose veins, thrombosis (watch for those on blood thinners likes coumadin) and lymphodynamic heart disease (lymphodynamic edema due to lack of venous return). In the case of acute sprain or strain (swollen knee etc.), massage only proximal to the point of injury. Due to the increase risk for thrombosis, no massage away from the heart on pregnant women.
