The Tucson Parade of Lights is seeking participants. An LED hoop troupe could be fun and unique entry. Anyone interested? If you don't have an LED hoop, I could provide some extras.

Hey all!
I am new to tribe and am delighted to find a community geared towards hooping in AZ! I have been hooping on and off for awhile now and honestly, Im not great at it, yet I am captivated by the energy and bliss it brings to me when I hoop. I would LOVE to meet up with some fellow hoopers and exchange energy...perhaps even make it a regular thing...maybe weekly get togethers (now that its nice out) bring the hoops, the kids, dogs and LOVE...anyone have any ideas?

I am pretty confident on making the actual hoop, but I am having a hard time finding all the decrative tape for the hoop other than online. I want to buy it locally so I don't have to pay for the extra shipping and handling. Any idea's

I made my first hoop with some zurn (WHITE) plex tubing http://www.2hsc.com/residential/manufacturers/zurn/sections/pex.html and I believe the psi is 160. It came out alright, but I noticed that it didn't come out a perfect circle? Is that normal? What kind of tubing is better at keeping the perfect circle shape?

Any leads on hoop making materials locally?

Hi everyone, I'm completely new to hooping, and am actually waiting for my hoop(s) to arrive - but in the meantime, I thought maybe I'd make a (or some) hoops from Irrigation tubing so that I wouldn't feel so bad about dinging up my pretty hoop from hoopnotica.

Anyhow, I went to Lowes and Home Depot - seems Lowes might have the 3/4" 100psi tubing, but it's not obviously marked as such (I searched online once I returned home empty handed) - but they don't seem to have the nylon connectors - either that or I was looking in the wrong place.

Home Depot seems to have the thick white PEX tubing, and the only connectors i could find were brass, and I wasn't sure if that was the right material or not...seemed awful thick, and not likely to just fit the connector without either glue or copious amounts of tape.

Local Ace Hardware does not appear to carry any irrigation tubing at all that I can tell. *sigh*

TIA for any guidance/suggestions! I'm in the Phoenix Metro Area....Tempe/Mesa/Chandler region

Wish I had discovered tribe sooner... anyhow, I have been hosting free hoopjams in prescott on sunday afternoons. Come join in the free spirit of movement, discovery and fabulous hoopplaytime. All abilities are really, really encouraged to show up. We meet at the northside of the courthouse square, sundays from 2-4ish. Often there is a craft fair going on simultaneously, so keep your eyes out. If there is no room on the north side, check the backside (across from post office). Feel free to email me if you got questions: wickedhoops.com
Peace and hoops,

I'm putting together a last minute hoop jam for this Thursday at Reid Park - around 4pm. Post if you're interested! It is starting to cool down and I think we should make the most of it. I will bring music and can bring a few extra hoops but would love to get a feel for how many extra hoops to bring.

I am so glad I found this tribe! I would love to practice hooping with anyone that is interested! We could even have a hoop day or night.... I have a terrific backyard for hooping with lots of lush grass, and huge pecan trees for shade. Have some tea and fruit and just get hooping to some good music.

Who is interested??

Hi Tucson Hoopers,

I have been injured and unable to hoop for about four weeks now. I thought I was going to get better by now and be able to hoop in the Cirque du Sin Show (link is below this post) but I am not!!

I am looking to find someone to replace my solo piece. It is going to be a great show and I'm sad to not be able to participate, but I have to heal before I perform again. Contact me if you're interested.

Thanks,

I'm getting out of Tucson (officially as of this Saturday) and perhaps in an insane move, relocating to Northern Arizona...the Verde Valley baby!
Thus, I'm looking to get in contact with hoopers up north.
I need to reconnect with my hoop...I've been too drawn into the stresses of work and life. Time to get back to what makes me happy and I'd love to connect with other hoopers!!!
Auditions for hoopers

We are auditioning currently for our upcoming productions (info below). Performers must be reliable, honest, dependable, and above all fun. Our debut show was a sell out success.
Here is info about the show. You may msg me on tribe if you'd like an audition. Sigles, duets or troupes welcome.

Romantasy Cabaret-Diabolique’s Dirty Little Secrets Second show is July 28 2007

Romantasy Cabaret, a hilarious, theatrical, adult-fun production was a smashing, sell out success at its maiden debut on June 30 2007. A second show will be held at Phoenix’ own Paper Heart Gallery at 750 NW Grand Avenue. The doors open at 8pm and the show begins at 8:30pm.
This unusual production will feature crass carnies, dancing dames, burlesque babes, saucy songstresses and fabulous freaks. Wander in and feel as if you have entered a circus sideshow complete with vintage-esque cigarette gals hawking candies and novelty items, as well as a boisterous Ring Mistress of Ceremonies to greet you on your way in.
With circus acts and burlesque shows making a comeback in modern day, this show is sure to hearken back to an age where buskers and tramps earned their living by performing odd or sexy acts for higher society. Lavish costumes, a dazzling show and uproarious silliness will entertain all who “Step right up”.

Lucy Morals, producer of Romantasy Cabaret, also directs Diabolique Unconventional Entertainment, the core cast who is sponsoring this show. Added special guests include a host of fine area entertainers including fire eaters, magic acts and tricks of the eye, and dazzling dancer numbers.
Lucy Morals has, herself, been performing in Arizona and California for five years and is one of the featured performers in the show as well.

The production is created and directed by Lucy Morals, hosted by Trash City Entertainment and is held at Paper Heart Gallery.
The show runs June 30, July 28, August 25, and September 29 2007.

$22 VIP Assigned, Reserved seating
$20 Reserved, assigned chair seating
$15 general admission, standing room only
Patrons must be 21 years or above to see the show. The material is for adult audiences and the venue has a bar.

Absolutely NO photography, filming or cell phone photos without a press pass. Violators will be escorted out, no questions asked & no refund given.

New Collapsible Hoop Design, Comments Wanted

Hi All,

I have been working a long time on coming up with a collapsible hoop design that I like, and I believe I have done it. I would love it if some of you more experienced hoopers could comment on it:

http://www.flammaaeterna.com/p-960-flamma-aeterna-bare-bones-collapsible-practice-hoop.aspx

It is just some images and description, but any of you are free to come buy our space and check it out. It is like most other 3-piece hoops, but the connector design is different. It can be assembled and disassembled very rapidly, and holds up well for regular hooping. If all goes well with the fire prototype, we will use the same model for the fire version.

Secondly, if anyone would comment on the description itself, that would be great. I.e., what all do you look for as far as specifications?

Thanks,
Matthew

Hello Arizona!

Hooping.org has been restructured, redesigned and relaunched and I invite you all to stop by and check it out. There's more information about what's been going on posted there, and now that I'm doing this solo as well (Vera stepped down in February) I'd also like to invite you all to contribute your writing, photos, thoughts, videos and more. I welcome your talent and input in keeping this almost four-year-old world-wide community hooping project alive.

Peace!

Congratulations to the winners of the HoopGirl Hot Moves contest! This was our way of giving some love back to the community for sharing all your beautiful inspiration. So thank you! Since there were only 4 applicants, everyone won something!!!

While all the entries were wonderful, I really felt called to award Sharna first place because of the unusual creativity of her moves. Beautiful!!! And Erica was a close contender, not only for the beauty and diversity of all her moves, but because of her fun and thoughtful presentation style. Congratulations everyone!

FIRST PLACE WINNER: Sharna Rose. Awarded a FREE Teacher Training valued at $700
SECOND PLACE WINNER: Erica Edelman. A $50 gift certificate for redeemable in the HoopGirl online store
SECOND PLACE WINNER: Jessica Sparks A $50 gift certificate for redeemable in the HoopGirl online store
THIRD PLACE WINNER: Natasha Young A copy of HoopDance for Beginners Instructional DVD, by HoopGirl

Since Sharna already signed up for the upcoming HoopGirl teacher training in the UK, she has passed the gift of a free training onto Erica Edelman, who came in at a close second to Sharna's entries. So Erica, You got the super duper prize of both a gift certificate AND a free teacher training! Instead, Sharna has agreed to recieve a complete outfit from the upcoming HoopGirl clothing line, available in April.

Watch the entries here!

FIRST PLACE: SHARNA ROSE
Please find attached my enteries to the Hot Hoop Move contest. I had big problems uploading my my footage (youtube mashed its quality so I had to send dv quality images - they took nearly an hour for 20 seconds worth of film - this is why the clips are so short.) So I apologise for the unglamourous way that I have presented the films - I hope you can see the moves enough to get the general idea.

Move 1. Flipper (A Reversal) - Start this move from hooping around the knees. Can be done either side but for the purposes of the demonstration I have done it clockwise. You will need to remove your right leg from the hoop when the gap occurs (if you were doing a kick out you would move the other leg) and then you use the foot to reverse the hoop using the knee as a pivot. Reverse the instructions to do this the other way - Its really hard either way and I cant always get it - the music has to be just right - or I don't practice it enough.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym_P8__DRq0

Move 2. Back around the Summit - Start this move standing upright and lean forward as if you were going to take the hoop behind your back and pop in. If you take the hoop with your left hand then as you come around the right side of your body you need to put your right elbow up and into the hoop, using your body as a pivot push with this elbow and pull back with the left hand. Reverse the instructions for the other side.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ekDuhjQQEE

Move 3. Jack in the Box - Start this move by doing a Reversed Summit. In this clip I start by taking the hoop around my back with my left hand - Instead of reversing the move with the elbow behind the back pop back into the hoop and use your right hand to swing the hoop onto your body (tip - use your left hand to stall the hoop and help with momentum when reversing and turn the direction the hoop is now going in). I find it more difficult to go the other way. You reverse the instructions but somehow my body gets in the way - I think more practice is required by me or it needs more swing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ7fVdbGQVU

Move 4. Back Heel Flick - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop infront and behind the body horizontally at about knee hight. On passing the hoop in front of the body with left hand use the right heel to scoop the hoop behind and up as high as you can behind your back - use your left hand to push the hoop back on your body as you pop back in. This only works this way because if you reverse the instructions the hoop is passed infront of the body.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSlfQeLDsYw

Move 5. Wind up - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop around the body horizontally in front and behind you. As the hoop comes back around your left side to the front, place your right foot on the far of the hoop and push the hoop around so that it comes over your right side, over your head and release your left foot (you can either hold the hoop with both hands or just your right). Twist the hoop over your body again using right hand and jump out backward from the hoop - take the hoop back around to the right behind you, using right hand, and pop in. Turn. Reverse the instructions for going the other way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPPYrAy4gS0

SECOND PLACE: Erica Edelman
YouTube Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P90mutX0tUg
Moves:
Move 1: Celeste / Luna
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: This is a fun move that even brand new hoopers can do. The challenge is keeping your balance at the end without hopping, but if you only do a half-turn, then it is much easier (but less fun!) I asked my beginner students to name it, and they came up with either Celeste or Luna, because the end pose looks like those pictures of a lady in the moon.

Move 2: Fun Start
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: Both this move and the previous move can be done by brand new hoopers. I was trying to figure out the "circus start" move (which I can't do) when I stumbled upon this little gem. Newbie Hoopers love it, because it is a fun and easy way to start hooping, instead of just pushing it around the waist.

Move 3: One Shoulder Duckout from Waist Hooping
Difficulty: High Intermediate
Notes: For a while I was exploring with One Shoulder Duckout variations. I put this move on a video on my website showing those variations but no one ever seemed to pick it, or the other variations, up. This one is pretty fun, but not too pretty. I generally don't do it in performances, because it does not have a high enough success ratio. (i.e. it ocassionally goes flying)

Move 4: Isolation with Turn
Difficulty: Advanced
Notes: This is a new one for me. Lots of hoopers do isolations, but I don't think I have ever seen any add a turn to it. It is difficult, but definitely do-able for anyone who already has a one-handed isolation down.

Move 5: "Not the Matrix"
Difficulty: High Advanced
The base of this move is from last year for me, but the end of it is new. It starts out going from a left shoulder duck-out to a right shoulder duck-out WITHOUT putting your head in the hoop. Now, the new part for me: THEN it goes in front of you (without your head inside, again) to a left arm duck-out. If I can get that last piece to a left SHOULDER duck-out, then I can make the move continous.

SECOND PLACE: JESSICA SPARKS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScregYQ55to
The move: SCISSOR SWITCH
accomplished by stepping out of the hoop while hooping on your knees, and using your outside knee to change currents/directions.

THIRD PLACE: NATASHA YOUNG
I call this move the spin cycle. It's swish into a toss with a spin.
My sister used to do this move when she was a baton twirler. A lot of
off body hoopdancing is similar to baton (warrior, for example) so I
thought I would give this trick a try. It's called a one spin in
baton, but I've seen them do three spins and four spins! What I
learned from watching the baton twirlers are the following:
(1) the higher you toss, the more time you have to spin around before
catching the hoop
(2) you need to throw the hoop as straight up into the air as possible
(3) always spot the hoop so that you are always aware of where it is

whats up arizona hoopers... I just got into the city after doing some traveling and my hoop was lost along the way.. I was wondering if anyone around the area had an extra hoop laying around and would like to meet up for a hooping session at a park, or one of your favorite spots around the city... the weather is perfect for it down here and I'd enjoy meeting the area hoopers

A girl named jessie asked me to post this:

"hi, i was inspired to create a SUPER-SPECIFIC group on youtube.com for videos that teach and show tricks by two things: 1) first, my sister sent me a bunch of how-to videos as a birthday present and they helped me learn basic moves when i knew no other hoopers; and 2) i have often watched the Hoop Masters with delight, and wondered "how in the heck do they do that?"

hence, the new video group on youtube.com.

i welcome your posts. i'd really appreciate any leads to good demo videos already on youtube. and please send along new hoopers to this site, if they are clamoring to learn new tricks and watch different people hoop in different styles.

I'll be performing at "Welcome Back Kotter," a rave down on 40th and Broadway? Don't hold me to the cross streets. I'm not absolutely positive. If you can find info online or go to Swell on Mill Avenue or London West Records on Scottsdale Road, it'll be more specific. But from 2-3:30 during DJ Groove's set, I'll be hooping up front!
Last night was my practice run at M3! Went well so wish me luck or come by and hoop with me!
