Where to stay near Tikal?

topic posted Wed, August 8, 2007 - 12:30 PM by  slodiver
I am traveling to Guatemala in 2 weeks and am wondering about where to stay in/near Tikal. I was originally hoping to stay in Tikal, but heard that the electricity (and thus fans, etc.) are turned off at night. Is this true? Will it be very hot in Tikal at the end of August? Are there any recomendations on where else to stay? Any feedback/info would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. Has anyone ever stayed in or have recommendations in El Remate?

Hola! I hope you enjoy your time in Guate!
I would definitely recommend El Remante. It’s a really nice, peaceful little town; there are several hotel options. There is the lake Petén Itza, it’s a beautiful place. There are docks where you can relax enjoy the view and swim. I recommend two hotels Gringo Perdido or Casa Roja; my personal recommendation Casa Roja! It’s great! Great people, very nice and friendly, super great vegetarian food! And you have a dock and the lake in front.
About the weather, August is not that hot it’s, compared to other times of the year, I would say around 34 Celsius and it can get colder if it rains or in the night. Its rainy season here in Guate, so be prepared for some rain, it is very probable it will.
Have a great time!!!! Enjoy Guate!

I agree with Mayari! Casa Roja is great, and you can find shuttles to Tikal in town really easily. Ask for Bruno---he is a great driver. Have a good time, and take your bug repellent!
