Updated t-shirt design

Josie added some pink accents, and I think it looks fantastic! If everyone on the team agrees, I'll start dealing with the printer. I'll let y'all know about style options--- I believe a few people were interested in baby tees or tanks as well. I'll find out what the minimum order for a specific style would be. I know I definitely want a regular t-shirt, but a tank for dance class might be cool to have in addition.

Out of the "Clubs and Organizations" we are in a *very* close second. All we need is a little help to catch up! :)

Our team of six belly dance students has really worked hard to raise money for Y-ME. And while it's fun perform for the walk participants and to engage in a litle friendly competition as we read how the other teams are doing, we know that there are women, their families, and their friends who face the reality of breast cancer every day. As dancers, we are so fortunate to have our health and to be able to share the joy of Middle Eastern music and dance. So fundraising for Y-ME is fun for us, but we take it seriously, and we couldn't do it without your support.

Rehearsal notes

Okay, one rehearsal down.

Stuff discussed:
1. Allison will play with costuming skirts to see feasibility of showing pants for some numbers and having the swish for tribal (will we be pulling the front down for tribal?)

2. Judith will help out with maybe an intro or outro, and may dance the Karen numbers

3. 4/4 battle - I will try to attach an MS Paint diagram so you can see where you need to be

4. Next rehearsal for all will be Sunday 4 pm unless Gayle tells us otherwise.

5. Rajni will find out how big the stage is supposed to be

6. Don't forget the yard sale next week - bring stuff to Cynthia's house!

As Yaalini captioned the pic... Mid-East meets East!

Louis from Beijing said we'd be welcome back anytime. He was thinking that we might want to plan for a Saturday night next time-- perhaps have small buffet around 8 PM and then dance and drum. I think the business for the restaurant was really good, and it definitely helped a good cause. So, maybe we'll have a celebratory hafla after the DC Walk to Empower! Perhaps in June...

We wouldn't have been successful without the awesome support of the bellydance community and all of our family and friends.

T-shirts

I put the design in the photos section.

If everyone like the black t's with white and pink details/ lettering, them I was thinking of having the Y-Me tassle on the sword pink (of course!), as well as the dancer's tribal bra, hip scarf, and the trim of her skirt. The majority of her skirt would be black (the t-shirt color). Other accents/ outlines would be white. Her hair flowers would be white and pink and her bracelets/ jewelry could be pink and black with white outlines. I usually tell the people at Custom Ink what we want, and then leave the finishing details up to them.

The Walk to Empower logo will go on the front again. Do we want our logo to be "B4B" or written out as "Bellies for Breasts"?

This year was a big success!

The vendor party last Saturday netted $137 (yay) and the monies from today (minus the restaurant's share - gotta pay for the food!) was $361.

That's $498 we raised in one week (and um, a day)...

Aaaaaand we forgot to grab the envelopes from Rajni - she has the collection envelopes for you to put your monies in.

I'm posting pics, but there's a lot and Tribe is kinda slow (no multiple pic option!). Most of what I took (or others took with my camera) came out okay, though some are blurry from the motion! So it might take a little bit to get all 50 or so up, but they'll be up soon!

Thanks to our dance sistahs from C'ville, Richmond, and Winchester - y'all rocked (and Chip too)!

TTE can do a 15 minute set, which would be awesome--- they're so much fun to watch and I'm sure everyone will love them, and so we'll have a chance to take a breather and enjoy the show for a bit. :) I have to check and see how long Saahira will dance.

Hey, I think I have some good news!

I talked to Jillian yesterday and she gave me some info about the new location. The stage will be smaller (16'x16' or 20'x20') but I don't think that sounds like a problem!

The sets would be 15 minutes this year; however, we have been asked to perform for 20-25 minutes immediately after the walk, when the walkers return and the festivities are wrapping up. That means we would be on stage from 10:00 to 10:25.

I double checked, and all donations are due at the end of June. What if we hold the Nader's hafla in June, as sort of a end-of-fundraising celebration? I am kind of leaning toward having the fundraising hafla at Beijing, just for the space and, as Mark is whispering over my shoulder, booze. Let me talk to Louis tonight and get back to you all. I need to get the hafla in gear, as some of the C'ville folks are planning a Jalsah in March and they don't want to conflict with us. I hope to have a date/ place by tomorrow. Wow!

Bellies for Breasts, a team of local students who support the Y-ME Walk to Empower, will be hosting a local hafla on Sunday, March 16 from 3 to 6 PM at Beijing Restaurant in Fredericksburg. Tickets will be $10 in advance ($12 at the door, as space allows) and will benefit Y-ME (www.y-me.org). Admission includes an "all you care to eat" buffet. This is a hafla ("party"), and not a performance, so there will only be dancing if dancers show up (though we plan to have some out-of-town guest dancers)! Come try out your moves from class! There will be open dancing, drumming, raffles and door prizes. If you have a dance that you'd like to share, we'd love to see it, just be in touch so we can work it in.

This year's B4B team includes Cynthia, Gayle, Monica (co-captain; thanks Monica!!), Jen/ Rajni, Natalie, and Allison, and my hubby Mark/ Baris (did I leave anyone out?). We are performing tried-and-true numbers to entertain the walkers on Mother's Day. If you're interested in joining the team for the walk, just contact me and I'll tell you how to join-- anyone can walk with us-- the more the merrier! The B4B dancers are all students who have performed with Anthea previously and kind of know the ropes as far as student performing goes. Email me if you have questions.

The menu will include:
General Tso's chicken

Beijing calculated the buffet at $7.50 per person (including tax and gratuity) so tickets will be $10 in advance, netting the team $2.50 per person. I'm charging extra for at the door tickets-- $12.00 if they wait until the day of to buy them! I'll have fliers in a day or so, and we'll be putting a poster up at Beijing. Louis will also sell tickets at the restaurant for us The restaurant holds about 90 people, so if we sold out, we'd make about $225 for the team just from ticket sales! I'm giving a prize to the team member who sells the most tickets over ten!!!

Chip from Mountain Mirage in Ch'ville has offered to teach a intro to dumbek class right before the hafla and take donations for us. Chip has studied with Raquy and is an excellent drummer, so as soon as I have more details form him, I'll be promoting this!

As soon as I have dancers confirmed, I'll enlist everyone's help in developing a schedule.

We need a mic/ sound system!

Initial meeting notes

Here are some notes from the meeting today:
Gayle, Monica, Cynthia, Samantha, Natalie, Mark and Jen were there. Allison couldn’t make it.

1. We should start posting possible choreographies ASAP to see who knows what.

2. Allison has been nominated to be in charge of flyer distribution to promote the hafla. We thought it would be a good idea to take them to any local women’s health centers as well as community bulletin boards, etc.

3. Monica is in charge of dancers at the hafla.

4. Gayle is in charge of keeping us on schedule for the hafla and at rehearsals.

5. The following fundraising ideas were approved (not including the hafla) :
A) “50/50” raffle - we’ll sell tickets for $2 each or 3 for $5. The winner will be announced at the hafla and that lucky person will win half of the raffle proceeds; the other half will go the team for Y-ME.

B) We plan participate in the upcoming Richmond belly dance swap (Feb. 24) and bring our flyers and raffle tickets. It’s also a good opportunity to get some costume pieces! I have a clothes rack if we want to hang up any items we may sell. Check out your closets for any unwanted/ unused costume pieces that can use a good home! If you can’t make it to the swap, but want to contribute items, we’ll get them there.

C) I am going to ask Brett if we can sell raffle tickets at the next Tribal in Richmond. We may also want to raffle off a hip scarf or other belly dance related item there if it’s ok w/ Brett and the To The Earth dancers.

D) Yard sale to be held at Cynthia’s house; date to be determined. I’m coordinating this and I’ll get ads out.

E) Combined home demonstrator open house to be held at Cynthia’s house. We’ll have jewelry, Mary Kay, Gold Canyon and other demonstrators there. This will also be the start of our Gold Canyon candles fundraiser, which will last two weeks. We need to get a lot of people to spread the word! Date/ time TBA once Cynthia has time to look over her calendar.

F) Pins/ bracelets if we can get those again.

6. T-shirts design ideas have been given to Josephine, who will work her artistic magic once again. Mark is going to check with the printer and keep us on schedule for the shirts.

We agreed that it would be a good idea to meet again as a group to continue planning. No specific date set yet.

I think that’s everything, but correct me if I left anything out or got it confused.

Richmond Swap info

Good news! We have a NEW SPACE for our Swap and Sale which will allow us to have more time for the event.

The NEW location is Brett’s house in the West End (Brett, for those of you who don’t know him) plays music with To The Earth and is the host of Tribal Jam) and the address is 1627 Swansbury Drive, Richmond, VA 23238.

The NEW time will be Noon-4, and it is still on February 24.

PLEASE let us know if you plan to vend. It is important that we know how many people to expect since we are now using someone's personal residence.

Vendors: If this changes your plans for attending, please let us know. There is no cost to vend, and with this new location you can bring a rack for your items if you would like. Brett also has several surfaces we can use to lay out our items on. Setup will start at 11:30.

Who's going to make it?

I'm going to come prepared with an outline so that we can go over our ideas, and talk about the t-shirts.

I'll have the info for the candle fundraiser, and I think everyone is going to like it. My sister also suggested that we try a "50/50" raffle. We sell tickets; half the money goes to Y-ME and the raffle winner gets the other 50%. We could announce the winner at the hafla, but not requre that anyone be present to win.

Yaalini has good ideas for the "buy a bellydance" fundraiser at the hafla. Yaalini, do you mind being in charge of that part of the hafla? It seems like you have a good vision of how it could work.

So, who will be there on Sunday? I'd like to get a head count by Friday so that I can let Louis know how many people to expect.

Third-party events are fundraisers that benefit Y-ME. They are coordinated and executed by individuals or organizations independent from Y-ME. Money raised is used to support the programs and services offered free of charge to those who can’t wait for tomorrow’s cure.

Ok, I'm just rattling off ideas now! Last year, Allison mentioned henna-ing (sp??) ourselves before the walk. That sounds like fun! And it got me to thinking-- can anyone do simple henna designs for donations during the hafla? Maybe we could get together and practice using the henna before the hafla?

Bellies for Breasts Team notes:

All dancers need to join the B4B tribe: tribes.tribe.net/b4b.
All walkers and friends are welcome to join the tribe, but since the dancers do most of the planning, we’ll need to be able to communicate easily.

Kick-off celebration: February 3, 2008 at 12:00 PM at Beijing Restaurant. We’ll meet, have fun, and get rolling.

We’ll need one or two co-captains. Any volunteers? Co-captains will help with taking notes, getting walkers’ fundraising packets together on walk day, general organizing, and of course, filling in should there be any emergencies. Co-captains do not have to be dancers.

No one *has* to take part in all, or any, of the fundraisers, but if we all help each other out, we’ll make our goal. I’d like every dancer to really commit to trying to raise at least $50.

Candle fundraiser will start in February. Don’t stress; it’s easy. I’m organizing this one.

Alimah and I discussed having a yard sale in her community. Save your unwanted stuff! Alimah will head this up and get back to us with a date/ time.

The B4B fundraising hafla will probably be in late March. We’ll need a volunteer to be emcee/ be in charge of performers; two volunteers in charge of monetary donations; and two volunteers in charge of door prizes/ raffles. Volunteers do not have to dancers!

Mark is in charge of t-shirts this year. If you have specific ideas, let’s get them to our artist, Josephine, on Feb. 3.

Info for Dancers:

I *think* that everyone who has expressed interest in the B4B performance has performed before, but just to be certain, I'll give y'all a quick run-down of these few requirements. :)

If you want to perform, please remember that Anthea's students should only perform her choreographies or Tribal O. if they have already performed at a show with her. If you have questions about being ready to perform, please ask Anthea. She asks that anyone who performs Tribal to be a current student. Also, don't forget the two-week rule.

Adara's students know several choreographies, so they can take a vote about which one to perform, then check with Adara for advice. Any of Adara's students who are interested but haven't performed before should talk to her about performing.

Typically, we have performed one or two tribal songs and one or two choreographies. We try to get as many dancers in each number as we can, but if you aren't enrolled in the class where we learned that dance, we can't teach it to you. Remember, our teachers work hard to develop dances and teach us, and even though this is a charity event, we need to represent them well as their students! :) Because this is a student-organized event, we don't have the benefit of an experienced dancer rehearsing and then backstage with us, so that's why it's necessary to have performed with your instructor prior to this show.

And most importantly, THANK YOU for doing this! It can be a bit of work, but it's fun.

Fundraising.. we can do it and we have ideas!

Jen / Alimah has volunteered her place for a Spring yardsale. I have always made at least $200 with personal yardsales, and we are going to schedule during the Lake Wilderness community yardsale, so traffic should be good.We just need to have as many B4B team members there as we can, and get some good donations. I know I can keep on de-cluttering...

Let's do the Spring B4B Hafla again. I need to talk to Karen so as not to conflict with her. We need some door prizes, raffle prizes, MC's, etc.

I have a candle fundraiser in the works-- the candles smell GREAT and we'll get 40% of the profits. I'll plan a party and we can all invite guests, maybe even provide some entertainment. Also, we can all show brochures to colleagues, family, and friends to get orders. Easy-peasy!

Mark is taking over T-shirt coordinating, as I am usually late for it all. Get ready to buy shirts in Feb or March. If you have design ideas, let me know and I'll forward them to our generous team artist, Josephine.

I'd like to offer B4B as entertainment for other teams' fundraising events, if they are reasonably close and they will donate a portion of their donations to our team. Two-week rules would apply with Anthea, and *if* we get a response, we'll schedule rehearsals.

We need a couple of volunteers to count money. And should we get a bank account?

Also, I'd like to ask that anyone who performs with us to raise at least $25. What do y'all think? I've found it pretty easy to raise at leat $50.

Finally, for dances... Anthea asks that anyone who performs Tribal be a current student. We need to think of what choreographies the majority know from Karen or Anthea. I'll be back in Karen's class soon. Just keep routines in mind.

Fit for Life - Sunday, November 4th from 11-4pm
@ George Mason University, Fairfax VA
Join Y-ME Mid-Atlantic at George Mason University’s Johnson Center on Sunday, November 4th for a day of fitness and fun!

The 6th Annual Fit for Life offers an opportunity for women and men to actively participate in workshops that cater to the mind, body and spirit. Workshops include, but are not limited to: massage therapy, reiki, dance, salsa aerobics, how to de-clutter, core fitness, as well as writing and art therapy for coping with cancer. Research is increasingly showing that healthful practices may play a major role in illness prevention and/or quicker recuperation. Fit for Life is another program

Y-ME Mid-Atlantic offers to those touched by breast cancer an opportunity to explore complimentary therapies they may want to use as they go through treatment.

This day of wellness education begins with attendees browsing vendor exhibits and the silent auction table. Opening ceremony and keynote occurs during complimentary lunch followed by three 45 or 50-minute wellness workshops, most of which are interactive. There will even be a silent auction and vendor raffle.

Just want to say thank you to everyone for a great night!

Adara was a big help with the sound system, advice and support. She
also donated many of the pink crystal pins & bracelets we were
selling. BTW, we have a few more bracelets and pins-- see me after
classes if you'd like one.

Thanks to Bella Donna and her friend from Winchester for joining us!
We hope to see you again soon.

I was very happy to see Angie there to support the cause and
perform. L-o-v-e the Turku music!!! I met Angie the night before
the hafla, so big props to her for joining in on such short notice.

All of the B4B team members were so helpful!! I am so lucky to know
such talented, generous and beautiful women. The whole team really
pitched in to make this a successful event.

Solana did a superb job of taking care of the donation table for
most of the evening. Thanks to everyone for counting the donations,
keeping music going, and keeping me on track. Wow, didn't the time
fly by??

The restaurant was full, and I think everyone had a great time. I'm
very grateful for everyone's support and participation. See y'all at
the next B4B hafla!!

Oh, and of course thanks to Nader's for generously donating 15% of
his profits to the team.

I'm looking forward to Adara's Hafla at Nader's on June 14 too. Come
join us and dance!!

T-shirts, bracelets and pins

Corrinne took a few pins and bracelets to her shop (in return, I'll put her shop on our shirts--- if I get everything squeezed in!!) . I think I have 2 bracelets and 2 pins left. Cynthia also took some extras with her to sell. I may talk to Adara about ordering more; even if we don't sell them all, we could have them for selling after the walk & next year if we want.

T-shirt update: I may have to switch the dancer to front and have the Y-Me logo w/ the sponsors on the back. Is that ok w/ everyone? I need to put in the order now. Since they run small (smallest size is a "small" where last year we ordered a couple of "extra smalls") I'm ordering an extra large for myself. I need to get the order in ASAP, so if I don't hear from everyone by tomorrow, I'm going to order an extra large for you by default. :) I am going to order a few extras to sell, give out for raffles/ prizes at the Hafla, etc. Our cost should be around $25 each.

Am thinking of a Cafe Press store for the shirts, that way we could have options for styles. But I do want all of the walkers to wear shirts that name our supporters (Adara, Nader, Josephine De). I may make shirt options without the donors listed for other ppl to buy and all of the profits over the Cafe Press cost would go straight to the walk. T shirts for walkers would not be marked up, because we've already donated time + money.

Let's put the "fun" in fundraising. (OK, I'm a bit goofy this morning!!!)

OK, I have more pins from Adara. I've sold some bracelets and pins just by wearing mine around! Remember, if anyone has already taken donations and would like to give the donor a pin or bracelet, let me know. Bracelets are in short supply! It would probably be a good idea for all of us to keep a few pins handy to sell if anyone asks about the ones we wear. And, I'd like every walker to have a pin, so just get yours from me at the next class or practice! Pins are $10 and bracelets are $25. If you take some pins but don't sell them all, no big deal. We'll sell them at the swap, and possibly at my next fund-raising idea:

Is anyone up for a fund-raising yard sale? Yard sales are easy money. Probably wouldn't happen until after the walk, but I know I could donate some of my junk! Mark and I typically make $200 to $500 off of our yearly yardsale, so if we pooled our resources, this could be an easy fundraiser. My yard isn't suitable for a big yardsale, plus I'm moving, so we need a volunteer who might live in a subdivision or other suitable location.

Local Fredericksburg belly dancers are taking part in the Y-ME Walk to Empower on Mother’s Day (YOU can walk with us too!). It’s a 3 mile non-competitive walk, with no fund-raising minimum. Go to www.y-me.org for more details. Our team is Bellies for Breasts and we’re part of the DC walk. Email me personally if you have any trouble navigating the site.

So, here’s the belly dancing part! Nader (Rt. 3 West in Fred.) has graciously offered to host a fund-raising Hafla at his restaurant. We’re planning on May 6th at 6PM. He is being nice enough to open on a Sunday and he’s donating a portion of the profits to the B4B walk team, so I’d be thrilled to see a great turn-out. I’ll have flyers soon. There will be door prizes and raffles. If you’re interested in donating a raffle or silent auction prize, please email me! It doesn’t have to strictly belly dance related. :)

We plan on having open dancing and drumming. If you’re interested in performing a number, let me know. I want this to be a fun event for our local belly dance community and maybe it will grow into a tradition!

We are also selling beautiful pink ribbon Austrian crystal pins and charm bracelets, donated by Adara Janaani. Pins are $10 and bracelets are $25; I’ll have them before and after class, plus at Karen & Donna’s swap.

Mark and I are donating a hookah, a drum, and a great package of primo dog food/ treats to raffle during the Hafla for B4B. Let me know if ya'll have any good stuff to rafle off... CDs, DVDs, costuming stuff. Non BD goods are fine too--- crafts, services (like dog walking or car washing, singing/ musical lessons, etc. etc.). Pictures and artwork are wonderful as well. We'll have the b4b shirt by then, so we'll raffle off one or two of those.

I would still like to ask that every performer (soloist or group) make at least a 1$ donation to set the tone for the evening, as we'll probably do a basket pass.

Great to hear from you! We missed you at last week's training luncheon!
It was a great time... I will be sure to send you a packet with all of
the information and new promotional materials so that you can stay up to
date!

The belly dance party sounds like a wonderful idea! If you need to hold
it after Mother's Day, that will not be a problem. Donations must be
turned in to Y-ME by June 22nd this year in order to count toward your
team goal (and the award ceremony prizes!).

I am putting a press packet in the mail for you today. I hope it helps
you as you seek media exposure. I truly appreciate that! Every person
who hears about Y-ME is one more who knows about our services should
they ever need them.

Performance confirmation

OK, I have confirmation for us to perform a 15-20 minut set before the walk. Because we performed last year, we have our choice of time slots (which amounts to "early" and even "god-awful earlier"). I'm going to ask for later time slot, which will probably be around 8:00 AM.

And, for now, I'm going to go with this idea for a line-up:
Let's not do solos, as this is a short show, we want everyone to get as much "face time" as possible, and there is really no time for costume changes.
Let's focus on tribal/ ethnic (vs. cabaret )costuming
Any of us can do tribal-- the more the better! probably an 8-10 minute set as usual. IF we have sword together by then w/ Anthea's OK (the duet choreography) that's a possibility for a couple of dancers. Plus tribal veil.

Yaalini and Nashida-- do you want to do Karen's masmoudi to live drumming if there's time? (if we can get Alima, Baris, and I together on drumming. I'm a sucky drummer.) Maybe there will be other drummers, too. We can always do canned music if live doesn't work.

Tina and/ or Gayle-- do you want to do drum solo/ finger symbol dance or possibly make it into a 3 person dance if there's time

Alimah-- do you want to improve or anything like that?

Any other ideas or volunteers for a specific dance? We can always do the modified entrance dance w/ improv (Alimah?) or the 4/4 as well.

Drummer !!!!

Wayne (who I met through Saahira/ Mountain Mirage) is the drummer w/ Dragonsong and drums all around Pennsic. AND he can drum for us at the walk this year (HUGS to Wayne!!!!). So, that means live masmoudi for Yaalini and Nashida, live 4/4 if we do that... live improv????

Wayne rocks and can totally lead the drummers!!!!
