Re: What this tribe is about.
Tue, January 6, 2004 - 11:59 AMVery good. I do not have an indian ink tat from 1982 of the symbol for nothing on me wrist.:) -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Tue, January 6, 2004 - 12:03 PMoh well, in times like this, I am far more convinced that Dead Kennedys are ACTUAL in the whole world!!
Cheers from the boot-shaped land ;) -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Tue, January 6, 2004 - 6:09 PMso, anyone care to get into how lame it is that the dk's are actually pulling in x-child actors & pals to continue touring without jello? i'm not convinced that the j-man is squeaky clean when it comes to sharing the royalties but this is not the dead kennedys without their founding frontman... lame.
btw- my old band played with (and i saw) the "jello fronted dks" in the eighties (good times) & i'm just surprised they'd do it without the guy.
let's hear some debating on the jello vs dks issue -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Fri, May 21, 2004 - 7:02 AMI played with Dk about a year ago, and I thought they were cool. At least the new singer was being himself and not trying to be Jello. That would have been really lame. Klaus, D.H. and East Bay Ray were cool... Well, not really East Bay Ray, he was being a dick, really...

Re: What this tribe is about.
Wed, January 7, 2004 - 7:29 PMThey, along with The Germs (no DK Tat, but I do have germ burns) were what motivated me and kept me going when I was younger. A do agree that Biafra is no angel. I worked for the guy off & on for ten years. However, the charges that have been leveled by EB Ray are totally off base. -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Thu, January 8, 2004 - 1:45 AMI got a Decline Of The Western Civilization indian ink tat of the DK symbol on wrist in 1982 and I am damn well proud to have it!
As for this reunion crap. You need to leave it alone and let sleeping dogs lie down. I think it is so lame that they do not have Jello. Brandon Cruz is a friend of mine and more power to him for doing it with them. But now it is turning into some Misfits deal and they got some other front man. What up on that? Jello was the DK's and always will be. He was the back bone as my I could not see my friend Stabb with Government Issue get replaced or Darby with The Germs. Etc. Also when a singer is dead like Stiv Bators leave the Lords alone! Same with THe Doors!!! Ian trying to look like Jim is just a little to much for the eyes of the beholder! God help me!!! Lol! That is just so lame! -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Thu, January 8, 2004 - 8:27 AMReunions, for the most part, usually are terrible.
There has only been one single reunion I ever paid money to see, and that was ? & The Mysterions (best part about that show, was a girl standing behind me saying "Those guys are too old to be on stage" in -get this- an Aerosmith '99 Tour T-shirt).
I nearly went to the Black Flag one, because the cause was good, and it wasn't going to go on forever. But I stopped short of buying tickets on the advice of my instincts. Boy, am I glad I did. I did see 'Rise Above' and did contribute to that cause.
I had found out about The Weirdoes an hour after the show began, so missed that. But then, they never really broke up.
I admit I am interested in seeing The Stooges. Mike Watt, from what I understand, has now earned his place with the showers of broken beer bottles, and far more organic material (use your imagination).
Oh, wait- we're talking about Dead Kennedys.
I have to admit that when Brandon joined, I gave him the verbal equivillent of a blast furnace. But he stayed calm, and explained his viewpoints- which I understand. He also left on very honorable terms- all to his credit, and less to the "band".

Re: What this tribe is about.
Thu, January 8, 2004 - 6:35 PMtim- thanks for the kind words regarding me being replaced in my old band --- if anyone ever tried to continue g.i. with another singer, they'd have the largest lawsuit up their ass! hey, i formed the band & named it. it'll never happen so whatever.
randy- the only reunions (all original members) i still support is t.s.o.l. (well, todd died), mission of burma (amazing to this day!), buzzcocks (even though their new album blows). other than that, band reunions, in a word, suck. i don't even wanna see the stooges (saw iggy twice in early 90's & that was good enough for me). wait, i take that back. if adrian boreland came back from the dead to play a reunion with "the sound" or david lee roth made peace with the van halen bros (screw michael anthony... that dwarf assbag), i'd be there in a heartbeat. -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Thu, January 8, 2004 - 8:40 PMOh shit, you reminded me about the other reunions I went to (but never paid for)
T.S.O.L- I was on the film crew, filming the Chris Grayson memorial, in which all the members of TSOl got together. To say it was a train-wreck of a disaster would be an understatement. Todd was drunk, Jack & Ron were fucked up & fighting. The equipment was failing. Jack was (as usual) abusing the fuck out of the audience and their roadie. More than one tumbler glass was tossed at Jack's head with intent to do damage, and the audience was on the verge of breaking into a full-scale, drunken, violent riot.
And in the middle of it all, here I was, defending a $10,000 camera, which was capturing the all chaos.
Man, I flashed back to the days of The Mab!
It was an appropriate send-off that Chris would've appreciated. Unfortunatly, the tapes will never see the light of day. Dirk was understandably not happy with the night, and does not want to release the tapes. To a degree, I don't blame him. One of the bands was East Bay Ray's Skrapyard, who managed to drive the crowd away in a matter of minutes. But still, I've urged Dirk over and over to release that set, with other footage. But I doubt it will ever happen.
When The Buzzcocks first reunited (with Howard Devoto), I had set-up an interview with them when they were to play SF. When they arrived, Howard had dropped out because of a nasty cold. A sucky, smarmy, kiss-ass video-show had slittered their way in, and were asking the dumbest questions imaginable ("how long have you been together?" "What type of songs do you like playing?")
But my interview was still on. The first question out of my smart-assed mouth was "If your first incarnation were to travel through time and see you playing tonight, would they call you a bunch of old farts?" To say it blind-sided them, would be an understatement. But they belly-laughed, and gave an honest answer (Answer: Pete probably would, but we're doing what we've always wanted to and doing it with everything we've got. Or somthing like that). Later, they put on a great show.
I've heard that Mission of Burma is still a must-see, but I've never seen any dates on the east coast, so I don't know. I'd probably see them just because '....Certain Fate' is one of those songs that saved my life. -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Fri, January 9, 2004 - 12:19 AMI didn't go see the refurnished DK Kennedys even though I love Brandon, it's just that I kept hearing so much bad shit about the shows, and despite the fact that Brandon said he was having a good time, IMO there just aint no DK without Jello. Everyone and their mother talked shit about it to Brandon, and he stood tall, but it was the sort of second hand reportage that left a bad taste in my mouth about the reunion, and stories I heard about how the band was ultimately treating Brandon while on tour, as well as the Jello issue, that led to my distaste for that reunion.
The reformed TSOL still rips, Weirdos (who still tour on the hits) and Skulls (who have put out 2 new Cd's the last 2 years) were awesome live last month. I haven't seen MOB in 15+ years, and while some of the newer Buzzcocks lps aren't that great, I really was happy when they got back together with Trade Test Transmissions and the times I've seen them live since they've been good, playing a mix of new and old stuff. The reformed Damned with the Captain still do a good job. The Crowd (who also never really broke up) put out one of my favorite albums last year. I read The Urinals have a new album, and I'd like to see them again. I heard Black Flag wasn't that good live for the WM3 benefits, but I still would have liked to see them again too. Not for $40 bucks though.
I don't mind the whole idea of reunions of some of these great old punk bands, and as long as they have the heart to rip live and/or still do a good amount of new songwriting, I'm a happy punker.

Re: What this tribe is about.
Fri, January 16, 2004 - 11:05 AMThe first show Bad Brains played in SF at the Maritime Hall when they reformed a couple years ago was magical. The band sounded better than ever. But at the end of the show, H.R. had all of his clothes at the mic stands in all these bags and he kept feuding with the band to play more extended dub songs (which eventually ruined the show).
The next show they played, the band had apparently caved in and let H.R. do a few of his dub numbers, but the fire wasn't there. And that's the show they taped and put out that last live album.
It's a shame really. -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Sat, January 17, 2004 - 7:39 AMI use to work in this club in fresno back in like 92-93 H.R. came there to play and right before they went on stage he got a call to tell him his father had just died. He went on and played they show anyways but he kept breaking down and cying onstage in middle of songs man it was the wierdest scene. I felt so bad for him while at the same time I just wanted someone to shoot hiom to put him out of his misery it was like watching Willie Mays flopping around in the out field still kind of creeps me out -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Sat, January 17, 2004 - 4:49 PMIf you're talking about that 'Soul Brains' show at Maritime, man, I should have left after the first 4 or 5 songs. The rest of that show was pure dub/reggae, which I know you can expect when you see them, but I thought they could have mixed it up a bit more...as I recall, most of the crowd was very disappointed, and considering the cover charge, and that most BB fans are into their heavier stuff, I think the show was a total ripoff. I'll never go see them again. -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Mon, January 19, 2004 - 2:11 PMAdding insult to injury, the opening bands were Dr. Know and all this skateboard pseudo wiggah bs. Blech! -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Mon, January 19, 2004 - 3:33 PMYou know reunions do not bother me if it is a band I really dig. Now if it is the Misfits or DK's like taht without original singers forget! TSOL is is still great and still have a lot of energy. I saw the Urinals back in 2001 at Mr. T's and they were killer! Never saw them before. -

Sat, January 22, 2005 - 10:59 PMJust WTF is wrong with Dr. Know? -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Sun, January 23, 2005 - 11:36 AMThere is nothing wrong with Dr. Know. It is that the Dead Kennedys should just let it be dead if Jello was not singing you know?? No one can replace the singer of the DK"s. -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Wed, January 26, 2005 - 1:30 AMwhat makes people want to unsubscribe from Tribe like this mod has done. I mean, if you don't want to log on, well, then don't - why quit?
Anyway, to the discussion on hand, the DK's should make peace and bury the hatchet. In times like these, folks like us (along with the kids) need a real voice in music.
BTW, the new Jello and Melvins CD ROCKS!!! -

Re: What this tribe is about.
Wed, January 26, 2005 - 6:08 AMjello is the kind of asshole it would be hard to make up with. Im not saying he might not be right in the whole copyright debate but I have had 3 encounters with that dude and every time I have walked away thinking "Jesus what an asshole"

Re: What this tribe is about.
Tue, March 15, 2005 - 2:58 PMI didn't unsubscribe, Ted. I was booted off by Walter for a piece of fiction I wrote about a year ago.
He was afraid that -get this- hippy prostitutes would be offended by the graphic description of skull fucking.

Re: What this tribe is about.
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 11:03 AMWell, currently, they're down to just two original members (Ray & Klaus).
Without getting into semantics of their ORIGINAL drummer, D.H. is back in rehab, after re-developing a smack habit again.
