Very odd, very old Italian bracelet

Hello all! I'm the son of an antique fantatic, and I just recently was given a very strange bracelet...

It's a man's bracelet, with two different types of chains together, far too large to be for a female. It's clearly not a belt fragment, and alternates between 3 plain silver chain loops, and then three that are two silver cords entwined. The charms are large coin esque, each one features a palace with Venezia perscribed on it. Then on the other side, there's two charms that have a bridge, two charms that have a gondalla, and the center has an ominious very masculine gryphon (lion's head) with an open book or possibly a tablet.

We think due to the size of the charms, how exaggerated it is...it may be something worn by a performer of some sort.

Any one have any ideas? I'd love to know the history of this...

I've looked online for what the gryphon meant, I found other people asking about it on other silver items...maybe it was the silver artisan's signature?

Need help on a clock.

Does anyone know of a good resource for dating and/or finding info on old clocks? I have a clock that belonged to my great uncle that I would like to find out more about.

I don't have a picture with me now, but I can describe it for you. It is an electric clock (not working right now). The timepiece is at the top. The bottom section has a kind of "home and hearth" scene. There is a fireplace. On one side of the hearth sits a woman and a child with a spinning wheel. A man sits in a chair on the other side of the fireplace. Both of the chairs pivot slightly, so the figures can sit facing the viewer or with their backs to them. There is a lightbulb inside the fireplace, and when turned on it gives the apperance of a lit fire. The whole thing is metal with a brass-like finish.

Does it sound familiar to anyone?

Antique German Cookbook published in 1797

Sorry I'm so late in getting this up, but I've got this up on eBay right now and Nora (perhaps some of you know her, she's a regular) suggested I post the link here for everyone to check out.

I bought the book several years ago and for the longest time couldn't figure out what it was all about. First I thought it was a house manual because of the words "fur junge frauen, haushalterinnen." The script was very difficult to make heads or tails of since it's so old and different than what we have now (Times New Roman, Ariel, etc), so I just kind of set it aside. Recently the semester ended, I ran out of money and I was in a mad dash to pull together money (still am) and found the book again (after two failed attempts at selling it in an antique store). I sat down and spent quite a bit of time studying the print style and remembering my high school german and finally everything clicked into place. It's a cookbook!!! 600 pages of culinary splendor to be exact!!! It's filled with all sorts of hidden gems. I'm going to take a few good pics with my camera so I can try to make a few dishes from the old country.

Anyway, even if you're not interested in buying it, stop over quick before it sells to check out the pics!!

Thanks,

ps - check out my other auctions too!!!

I'm really suprised that noone's into dragonware. So what kinds of antiques does everyone collect or specialize in? What's your favorite piece that you have?

My wife and I have two major collections (besides all the smaller ones). One is Perot style clown dolls and the other is black glass. We have a black glass owl that's pretty interesting. The top of the owl's head sits on a point in the center of the base and you spin it so that the owl's beak points to a "yes, no, maybe" sort of thing like a magic 8-ball.

Hello, my name is Kerry Drew, and I love all manner of antiques and collectables, but especially items of jewelry and amulets created for magical purposes.

I have been a history buff since I was 8 or 9 and I am especially interested in the Scythians, Celts, Mayans, Greeks, Romans, Thracians, and Ancient Egyptian cultures, as well as the Jomon, Yayoi, and Kofun periods in Japan, but nothing of ancient historical significance fails to interest me.

I am a highly skilled jeweler, and metalsmith, with over 30 years experience, who offers his services to the general public, but particularly to those who prize fine craftsmanship in antiquities, and ancient style jewelry.

In order to support myself and pay for my collecting hobby, I sell hand-crafted jewelry, and high quality fine art reproductions on Ebay, as well as directly to the public. Custom jewelry commissions are welcomed!

Currently, I have several items available which any true lover of ancient art and antiquities might wish to see, and very possibly own!

Whilwe I appreciate that this is a Tribe focused on antiques, here is one notable example, an auction item which is ending very soon, of special interest to Viking buffs:

http://tinyurl.com/2shefe

I am deeply interested in any opinions my fellow Tribe members might have about the iconograpy and symbolism of this wonderful Viking piece!

I am offering LaTene/Celtic, Viking, Egyptian, Roman, and other fine items of historical style jewelry.

Please patronize your fellow tribe members, and myself in particular!

(Help keep a well meaning jeweler, and artisan on the straight and narrow!)

In addition, I specialize in the careful treatment of antiques and antiquities, while reproducing them, so that the designs can be worn and appreciated on a regular basis, with no risk to rare and/or fragile antiquities.

Should you have a ring, seal, scarab, buckle, amulet or other item of any material, which you would like to reproduce, in silver, gold or bronze, please let me know.

References are available by request.

Thanks for your kind attention!

Hi,
I have a 1930s art deco cabinet bar. I want to sell it, but I'm not sure what it's worth?
It's 4' x 4'. I think it's burl wood, but not sure. Very pretty and in good condition.
If anyone can give me a price range, that would be great. Or someone who
wants to buy it from me in the LA area. I'm also selling a 1910 Venetian Mirror,
vintage clothes, and a wood carved 1940s mirror.
Visit
http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tt/8258e/#TLTo check out photos of items being sold.
Thanks for any feedback on what any of these items are worth.

hi group - any ceramic / porcelain collectors out there?

Greetings - I'm hoping to hook up with some folks who collect the odd dish and tea cup out there in cyber space. I've been trying to network to find out the history of some of the stuff I've picked up recently and thought perhaps I'd find some like-minded souls here.

At the moment, I'm getting nowhere in trying to identify some ceramic dishes that are marked on the bottom 'D. & D. China' - they appear to be around 75-100 years old, but have no idea... I've been told they could be very old, or they may not be.

In any event, good tidings to all!

So I bought a vanity for $100, very neat little drawers and inlays. I thought it was just a vintage piece but mom inspected it and got really excited about the little wooden wheels. She said it's probably worth a good bit more than the $100 I paid for it just because of the wheels.

I love the table and wouldn't consider selling it, but I really want to know if I can estimate it's age based on the wood wheels and general style. Its actual worth, I'm sure, is reduced by the fact that it's been painted and stripped at some point.

Here's a picture:
http://www.lunarfusion.com/box/altar.jpg

So, anyone know anything about how long ago wood wheels fell out of fashion?

Well I had to join this tribe since I have been interested in collecting antique insulators ... streetlights and related power line electrical things since childhood . I am something of an industrial archaeologist and quasi professional historical researcher/writer as much as a collector . I am one of the few collectors who actually goes out and finds these artifacts in the wild.... If anybody else out in tribe land has an interest or questions about these sorts of things Id be happy to chat ... I would guiess there are about 10000 active collectors of all types of insulators in the world wide .
It is always intresting to connect with others who have a passion for preserving history
Trivia... Last year a rare 1893 era glass power insulator sold on eBay for $10000 to a collector I am friends with ... there are a few more photos of me hunting for these in my profile .

Enjoy
Rain

i am a yard sale fanatic and always find new or different items i fee can move to antique dealers and would not normally ask people i dont know but my grandfather an esteemed assesor in the field, is not verbal with me now so i need some advice on prices to sell these at.
1.looks to be late 1930s to early 1940s royal miniature typewiter, with minor damage to the plywood travel cover. the laptop of the time as it may be from my slightly trained eye.
2. polaroid land camera brown leather travel camera, he had one before and i cant imagine the price of it today being equall to the late eighties when he bougthand sold it, this camera is missing one male type screw on the lens cover panel but otherwise all aaspects are working and in well kept condition.

if any help is availible or directions to a person that would be in the know would be greatly appreciated.

thank you all,

Hey everyone! I'm Stephanie and I just joined. I'm hoping someone here can help me.
I have an antique floor lamp that my husband inherited from his grandfather. The story is that it was used in a funeral home. That's all I know. The whole thing is made of copper.
I posted a pic on the album, it's not a very good one. I will try to get a better shot of it on here. The lamp works and there are no defects on it at all.
If anyone has ever seen one like it or can lead me in the right direction it would surely be appreciated! Thanks!

Selling to Antique dealers

I have some antiques, some of which are wooden furniture that needs rehab work. I don't have much time or inclination in that area and am starting to call antique dealers and those who do "clean outs" and "want to buy antiques" in the Phila area. Are these folks gonna rip me off? No one has come to look at anything yet. Getting them to come out, even though they say they will, that seems to be a long shot.
I thought of auction houses as well.
Opinions please?

Anyone out there interested?

anybody have any suggestions? ebay doesn't seem to be working because my listing actually contains words, not pictures. yes, easily remedied with a digital camera, but we just moved and damned if i know where anything except the figurines are.
any thoughts and help would be appreciated. for the record, these are members only club pieces through 1989 or so.

I have a photo of an oriental piece and am wondering if there is anyone out there who can help identify it.

It’s definitely old. Looks kind of like a bell. It has a slitted opening along the bottom and is hollow inside. It is carved of wood and has original paint. My family collected oriental antiques but no one is alive to tell me this story.
Does anyone have a clue what this is or where I could find out what this is?
I will be glad to post a photo. Look for the photo of the Chinese Thing on this tribe.

buy on ebay?
pointers for either?
I want my stuff to sell that I list and research how similar stuff is listed and what it goes for.
What seems to go well?
There seems no reason sometimes why some things sell and others don't. I just wonder if I'm missing anything.
