does anybody else' cat play fetch. our cat brings spongeballs, drops them in your vicinity (not always in my hand) and then runs after them and bring them back. If you are just lying around, she might go and get a ball, bring it to you and start squeaking.... I never had a cat that did this before

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 12:52 PMI had a grey tabby that used to do that. Would bring back anything we threw for him. And no, he didn't always bring it back to us, but rather would drop it *near* us.
So cute. -

Re: Cats that play Fetch

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 1:09 PMhow many kitties do you have? now there is Max and kitt'n'box
too bad I had to work my way through all those gorgeous photos of you looking for your kitty -
-
Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 1:43 PMSorry about that! The only one I have right now is Max. The other photos came from the web or friends emailed them to me, etc. I had two others that were my best friends for years until they got old (18 and 20 years) died. But Max is my sweety now. He's 3. I could go on and on, but it'd get boring. :)
How many do you have?

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 1:37 PMMy Maine Coon, Paris, is the fetcher in this house! If I'm sitting at the computer, I can count on her to come bug me to play fetch! Her favorite thing to fetch??? Q-tips! She gets them by either dumping the bathroom trash can (precious, huh?) or by opening the bottom drawer in the bathroom and getting them out of the box (again, precious, huh?;-)
If I ignore her, she nips or nibbles on my arm or leg until in self-defense I throw her fetching object!!!
My older cat used to fetch, but he's too cool for that now that Paris is around! -
-
Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 1:45 PMLOL, Mine gets the Q-tips out too! What is it with Q-tips? -
-
Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 1:50 PMHey Z!!!
It didn't even dawn on me that YOU were on here!
I don't know what the attraction to Q-tips is, but she KNOWS if there's one in the trash!!!
The drawer opening has got to stop, though. Now, she's opening the kitchen drawers and rooting through them, too!
(mumble, mumble...too dang smart for her own good...) -
-
Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 2:02 PMI just have Roxy (aka Binky, Stinky, Poopy, LoveChild, etc.)
Q-tips that's cute and annoying
careful with your ears, that's sensitive in there
Binks has a fascination with pens, preferably one you are using or were using, if there are 20 kitty toys she will ignore them and go for the pens
oh yeah.
and foam earplugs -
-
Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 2:10 PMMax too!! Loves them. He likes to try to take them out of my ears at night! -
-
Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 2:18 PMyikes, binky hasn't figured out that one
we're gonna have to keep them incommunicado so binky doesn't get any ideas -

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 7:52 PMI had a kitty, Leo who played fetch from an early age, his favorite thing to fetch was balls made from the plastic bag the paper comes in...LOVED them. In fact after he passed away (still sad) we moved a couch that hadn't been moved in years and there were about 50 of those little plastic bundles under the couch! He'd been hording them in case he needed to fnd one quick to play I guess...I miss that kitty.
My current cat, Maximus, he too loves Qtip, prefers them to have been used (sick bastard)...something about the ear wax I guess, pretty much grosses me out! -
-
Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 8:27 PMUsed Q-tips and used ear plugs - gross! -

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 8:37 PMI concur, but what is a person to do? -
-
Re: Cats that play Fetch
Fri, June 24, 2005 - 4:38 PMzeus fetches when HE feels like it, usually little fur mice or my elastic ponytail holders. He usually brings it near me, but for a little while I got him to bring it right to my lap, but he got lazy again.
Luna is the q-tip freak here. AND pens. Usually white pens.
Actually, when my in-laws were cat-sitting, they said that Zeus brought a POTATO upstairs from the basement once, dropped it in front of my father in law and cried. So Dad threw it into the kitchen and grumbled a little, and Zeus actually fetched the potato back into the living room and meowed for it to be thrown again! -

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Sat, June 25, 2005 - 4:18 PMKitty (that's my cats unique name) likes to fetch pipe cleaners that are made into spirals so they roll when she bats at them on the floor. She'll sometimes, if she feels like it, bring it back and put it by my feet so I'll throw it again. She likes it thrown high so she can fly through the air and catch it.
When she's done she leaves a collection of them by her water dish, sometimes in the water, but that's gross. -
-
Re: Cats that play Fetch
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 9:31 PMMaximus, my orange tabby, loves to drop my hair scrunchis in his water dish. Especially the dark ones that discolor his water. I know scrunchis are popular cat toys, but in the water (and the food dish too by the way), WTF?
Very dramatic, my cat. -

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 4:28 AMmy one cat does fetch, but on her terms.
she'll run and get something i throw.....toy with it a little while....and just when you've forgotten you've thrown it and have taken your attention away from her, she's back in your lap or above your head dropping the thing
the we repeat
usually takes a couple of hours! she likes the rings that come off milk, that little plastic thing that seals the lid. my other cat, stan, will chew and wrestle with them too. he also like wrestling with leaves that fall off my plants, pens, twist-tie's, etc. i think he's practicing because he's the bad ass in the neighborhood, though he's a cream puff at home.

Re: Cats that play Fetch

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Wed, August 24, 2005 - 12:49 PMHi! I'm new here. My cat Bogey (God rest his soul) used to fetch beer caps. He would snatch them off the coffee table and throw them down the stairs and then he would stuff them under the bottom step. It got so bad I had to go to the bar (boo hoo) and have them fill me a bag of them up for him. I put them in a bowl for him and he got em out and brought em to me. The weird thing is he would only fetch Bud Light caps, he left all the other brands in the bowl. -

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Wed, August 24, 2005 - 4:01 PMROFLOL
that is great
Bogey rules!!!
Bud Lite???
i hope it was a sign of his distaste or... maybe he was in to light beers for reasons of his figure before all the hip brands started getting on board

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Wed, August 24, 2005 - 5:54 PMMy kitty Merkin used to play fetch with pom poms especially the sparkly kind... until one day I found them in his poop... So now we play with little toy mice. He's pretty damn good at it, considering he is missing a leg after a run-in with a car. If you look at my profile, there are pictures of him in the kitty hospital... but I don't recommend it for the faint of heart....
Anyway, he is recovered and playing 3 legged fetch with fake mice all over the house.... :) -

Wed, August 24, 2005 - 10:54 PM3-legged fake mice??? -
-
Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, August 25, 2005 - 12:01 AMWell, technically they have no legs... just covered in rabbit fur or something... but he has this ritual of biting off their tails first... That's how ya do it - according to my cat!

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Sun, January 8, 2006 - 5:20 PMMy cats both fetch, but not with just any toy. It has to be either an elastic hair tie or a sparkle ball, pink and green are their favorties. -

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 4:39 AMBoth our cats play fetch too.....they like screwed up coloured chocolate wrappers and walnuts best...if we throw them thru' the air they like to jump and bat them back. They also like to hide them in shoes. This Xmas my wife, Christy, gave me a pair of new boots and before she had wrapped them someone had already secreted a wrapper in each boot for me to discover on Xmas day!

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 5:15 PMMy Raven kitty does that. She would go fetch the ball ball and bring it back and drop it right down to have it thrown again. She also has the sweetest kitty squeek to let us know to hurry up.

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Wed, January 25, 2006 - 7:52 AMWhat is it with the sparkly pompoms?! Heidi my kitties have an absolute attachment to those too....although, happily, they don't consume them..just bat 'em around until they kill 'em (lose them under a chair).
We have tiny adult black manx female, Rosie Rae, who just rediscovered a glitter hot pink pom which she'd lost at least a year ago.
She was thrilled! Then when Django, our newly adopted Katrina kitten, already twice her size, tried to play with it too she quickly put him in his place. Some things are sacred.

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Wed, February 1, 2006 - 5:50 PMFrodo sometimes fetches yarn pom-poms especially if they are catnip flavoured. He also likes to chase pens, nail files and small things like that until he loses them under the carpet.
I keep all his little toys in a basket on the floor and he'll go and get them out to play with. -
-
Re: Cats that play Fetch
Thu, February 2, 2006 - 9:36 AMI just stuffed all gazillion cat toys into a big, heavy wide mouthed jar under the coffee table.
Just picking them all up from every inch of the house was an eye-opener!
Now both kitties, the silly young guy and the mature female, regularly go digging for their favorites. It's interesting to observe them leaving one after a few minutes and deliberately going back to pick through for another one they clearly remember.

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Tue, August 8, 2006 - 2:19 AMMy cat, Harley plays fetch with a whip.. NO! REALLY!!! HE DOES!!! Look at this picture: www.ladyweasel.com/images/harleys_whip.jpg
When he was a kitten, he would steal my hair ties and socks... I figured if he wanted to carry things, I may as well praise him for it... And it turned into fetch.. I guess he craved the praise and brought things to me... Well... I noticed that he had a taste for cords... and a taste for things made out of leather... So, I bought him that whip and encouraged him to play with it and chew on it... He loved it when I snapped it and would catch it.. Anyway.. long story short, he will bring it to me in the middle of the night, or any other time he wants me to snap it around for him... VERY demanding!! He sulks if I don't play with him... He will wake me up and he will hit the other cat if he goes after it. -

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Fri, August 18, 2006 - 8:35 AMMy smaller cat plays fetch and my bigger boy will eat leather too even the window blind cords -shoe laces yummy yummy.
He acts as if he is resting his head on your shoe and then gets a hold of the lace and eats it.

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Fri, August 18, 2006 - 9:07 AMA couple of cats like being "whipped" and would meow at me when I would rub it on their backs. *meow, meow, meow*
I miss my kitties so much. Raven loved to play with ball ball and mousey. She would go get one and just bring it up and drop it down. I even had a little "kitty toy box" for them.
Amber kitty had a stuff symba toy (from the Lion King). Occasionally I would hear this strange meowing and if didn't caught taking a look at her; would catch her loving on it like a kitten and caring it around.
Cats are awesome!

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Sat, September 2, 2006 - 10:19 PMThis is REALLY strange, and it sounds REALLY psycho for me to share this... but, it is also true.... Recently, my 2 rascals have started carrying around "ladies things" that Harley steals from the box.... I was taking a rest one day when Harley dropped one at my feet, wanting me to throw it... Then Bob, the other cat, stole it (he'll steal the jewelry out of your ear if given 1/2 a chance, he also tries on clothes).. Harley ran after him and took it back, dropped it at my feet again... Now all I have to do is tell Harley to "go get the <ladies thing>" and he will..... I wish I had a video camera.. LOL!!!
I should really buy them some actual cat toys... But, they have so much fun with paper bags, things that make crinkly noises, socks, whips and other "items", do I really NEED to buy them "cat toys"? -

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Fri, October 6, 2006 - 10:02 AMNew here as well, just posted a pic of Sugah attacking hair ties. This is what she does between throws. She'll fetch a wide variety of things, milk bottle caps, hair ties, string, etc. Last night she brought me (in bed) a closed film canister and dropped it on my foot. She brought it back a few times before I fell asleep. Every once in a while I'll wake up in the morning with a collection of toys next to my pillow that she's brought me in the night.
One of her favorite things is this little pink stuffed pig (Babe). Its about the size of a newborn kitten. She used to play fetch with it a lot, but now she mostly just carries it around. She'll see it laying in the middle of the living room, run over, pick it up and go hide it in the office somewhere. We find it in different places daily. If I pick it up and say, "Sugah! I've got your piggie" she'll get very attentive and anxious. She'll sit and stare at it intensely and make little squeak noises until I give it back to her. Once in a while she'll bring it to me to toss for her.

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Mon, January 1, 2007 - 10:27 PMI had a cat, a 21 pound, long haired, orange tabby named Doc, who used to fetch. Rolled up sock, wadded up paper towel, those were his favorites. He'd race after them, pick them up and bring them back and drop them close by and wait for you to throw it again. 4 was about his limit. He's gone now and I miss him but we have two now, and the female, Peaches kind of plays a lazy cat's game of fetch. Just before we go to tbed, she decides it's time to play. She waits for us in the hall outside of the bathroom to play, after webrush our teeth. We sit there in the dark at the bottom of the stairs and toss her taillless catnip mouse up the stairs. She charges after it and attacks it. Picks it up, tosses it in the air and swats it or carries it back down to the bottom of the stairs. Where we toss it back up until she, instead of attacking it, just flops down on the catnip mouse telling us she's done.

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Wed, February 7, 2007 - 4:53 PMMy grandmother had a lovely black cat named Gigi that would fetch and my genius kitty Pixel used to play fetch all the time. She started on the sofa and then she would run through the house to catch a thrown mouse. Now the male cats get in the way they get so excited by play and she likes to lay around more than play fetch.
-
Re: Cats that play Fetch
Tue, April 17, 2007 - 9:41 AMYes as we speak! She's relentless. She'll simultaniously headbutt my elbow and drop her toy mouse to "let me know" she's ready to play as MY mouse goes flying across the desk! It's been good though because she was getting a little tubby and has slimmed down some from all the exercise. We decided to try teaching her after learning a sibling of hers (who belongs to friends of ours) told us that their cat fetches. Our girl took to it immediately. Maybe it's in the genes. Gotta go I'm being summoned.

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Sun, September 16, 2007 - 8:21 AMMy cat Merlin's favorite game is fetch, as i lay on my bed in my bedroom, Merlin brings his one special mouse toy to me and places it in my vicinity, close enough that i don't have to move really so i can throw it once more. I think he's part dog or something!

Re: Cats that play Fetch
Sun, September 16, 2007 - 3:25 PMWhen I throw a ball for my dog, my dog ignores it and my Manx, Ziggy, chases it. He hasn't learned to being back the tennis ball yet though.
