Why do these shitheads decide that as soon as the lights go off, and the humans retire to the big squishy square thing in the back room, to resume the ultimate struggle for domination?
ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum schreeeeeeeeee (hiss!) ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum (scratch scratch scratch scratch!) ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum BANG CRASH meow ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum...
Two little extremely sharp fluffballs sounding like a herd of horses, I'm sure the downstairs neighbor just LOVES this at 1am.

Re: The ongoing battle for alpha kitty
Mon, January 30, 2006 - 3:48 PMmy cats did that when i first got them. they were about a year old. so for three nights in a row i put them in their carriers. they bitched and moaned a bit, but now, if i'm up late they bug me to go to bed.
they still have stampede times, which you sooo accurately provided the sound effects for, but they have them at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. like clockwork.

Re: The ongoing battle for alpha kitty
Mon, January 30, 2006 - 3:51 PMJeeze! They make that much noise "Bang Crash"? What you got, Cougars? I have a big dog and half grown kitty and they get after it pretty good too. The biggest problem is when the cat goes under the kitchen table and the dog goes in after her. Talk about "crash boom". Oh well, it's cheaper than the movies. -

Re: The ongoing battle for alpha kitty
Mon, January 30, 2006 - 4:33 PMWell, they probably think they're cougars, anyway. Both spoiled little princesses. (check the profile) They'll trash the place, nothing is off limits when you're defending your territory apparently. I think they intentionally knock shit over to make the noise, it's a gorilla pounding the ground with a tree branch kind of thing. So lately, every morning, we have to find what the knocked over in the night. You start to memorize sounds of stuff... that was the comb from the back of the toilet, that was my combat boot being drug across the floor by the laces... OH SHIT what just broke? Was that a lightbulb? Who left a lightbulb on the table??
The most annyong form of posturing is that claw-sharpening show off thing... we've had to put double-sided sticky tape on the couch, but we also have one of those foam tiled floors in the exercise area which they love to show each other how tough they are by shredding it.
They do this thing where they'll sit JUST out of reach of each other, then one will instigate shit... roll over and stretch a paw out... the other will stretch out... the paws are 1/4" from touching and still we have passive cats. But once the paws touch: BAM! one paw boxing, followed by two paw boxing, followed by... ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum.
We were told to not get two strong personality females. We didn't listen, we like the rough-n-tumble types of arm chewers and mice hunters, and #2 just happened to find us nevermind that she is a girl. (in a shelter of about 80 cats, we were there for hours. It was the right cat, alright.)
But now we're paying for it. :) I just wish they could decide who's the alpha bitch and get on with being cute little demons. -

Re: The ongoing battle for alpha kitty
Tue, January 31, 2006 - 4:14 PMLOL at least yours seem to do cutesy stuff like "kitty love pile" and such, are they litter mates? These two, if there's any touching it usually involves striking.
The tiger we've had since eyes open, so she's fairly humanized (talks, trills, knows how to motivate humans to do what she wants) whereas the calico was a street cat for 6 months, and was even returned to the shelter by her first adopters, those stupid motherfuckers (but thanks! she's ours now!) so she's much less humanized... doesn't meow, doesn't lick, jumps at the slightest noise, thinks most forms of play are attacks, etc.
It's a great example of a war of escalation... instead of the calico becoming more friendly / trusting, the tiger is remembering what it's like to be a Strong Female Cat.
Our co-op rules are that if the neighbors complain and you don't have carpet, they can petition the board to make you install carpet to muffle the noise. We're half-way expecting that letter one day. :) -

Re: The ongoing battle for alpha kitty
Wed, April 26, 2006 - 6:54 AM*meow* ;)
I thought that Torties and Calico's were notorious for being "scaried cats" and b/c of that they are a bit more aggressive. I know my tortishell, Amber was like that. She only really liked us.
I miss my kitties. :(

Re: The ongoing battle for alpha kitty
Tue, April 25, 2006 - 2:08 PMI don't know how long you've had these cats, but be prepared. Although most of the time cats will sort the dominence thing out, sometimes the battle never ends. I had a dominent female adult cat and like an idiot, I fell in love with a VERY badly behaved dominent male kitten. I figured he was a kitten and within a few months, she'd put him in his place and that would be it.
He jumped on her immediately and she actually knocked him down the stairs. He was okay. He got up and pounced on her again. Throughout his kittenhood, she threw him down the stairs three times or more.
This was SEVEN YEARS AGO!!! Today, they still beat the crap out of each other regularly. I still have to clean out cuts and puncture wounds on both of them. They still break things and knock things over in their fights and whenever they have the urge to just break stuff.
Anyway, good luck and hope it doesn't take yours this long. -

Re: The ongoing battle for alpha kitty
Sun, April 30, 2006 - 9:27 PMAll I can say is clip your cats nails. My kittie, Maybe, hates it, but too bad. She can cope with a monthly manicure/pedicure. My furniture is much happier with this arrangement. And my dog won't get hurt, either. They get along well, but i don't want Maya's nose cut open. -

Re: The ongoing battle for alpha kitty
Tue, May 2, 2006 - 1:04 AMNah, we leave em in fighting capability. Besides there's enough stuff around here that they'll sharpen up really fast, making a mess of whatever they decide to use (lately the backs of our office chairs)
They're calming down somewhat. Well, no, not really, I'm just becoming desensitized to the territorial bullshit they play. I am beginning to have fun demonstrating that I'm the ALPHA, motherfuckers, so when they're about to do the "ball of fur" thing I kinda push them together and flip both of them on their backs and hold them. (you can imagine how that goes over)
I mean they're not the least bit afraid of us, the newcomer came in with a broken left top fang, and if you use your foot to scoot her away from something, she's got no problem letting you know that's unacceptable behavior by doing a Tasmanian Devil act on your shin.
But, they distract me from the fact I'm slowly dying. Cats are good like that. :) I think I'll go pick a fight.... -

Re: The ongoing battle for alpha kitty
Mon, January 1, 2007 - 9:59 PMSoft paws worked well for us before we got tired and lazy. Peaches and Herb are littermates and we go through the late night crazies at 11PM if we got to bed at a reasonable hour. Most the noise is the boy. Absolutely graceless! Gorgeous cat but he sounds like he wears work boots at night.
Claw trimming does help but you have to stay on top of it. My wife's chair took the brunt of it all. Girl cat just preferred it to their 6 foot scratching post.

Re: The ongoing battle for alpha kitty
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 3:47 AMI have 4 cats, 2 female and 2 male. We got the 2nd male for the other to play with as the 2 females are a lot older. Now Crazy Claws (male) has been forced out of the house by Zod (the youngest kitty) and is living somewhere else (I hope). He turns up every now and again as is extremely fat so he is obviously getting fed somewhere, he just rarely comes into the house when Zod is about. Its a shame really as Claws is a lovely cat, but I probably should have thought before getting 2 Toms.
Maybe Crazy Claws will come back one day.
