Winter Wearing....

topic posted Wed, November 14, 2007 - 8:15 PM by  squirrel
So now that winter is here I would love to hear how people are wearing their little ones and keeping them warm. I have seen a couple of specialty wearing baby coats, but they are pricey so I was wondering what others are doing.

Keep that baby close!

I got an extra large jacket that I wear. It zips in front and the head hole is big enough for both of us. It also has a hood that I can put on over Anaya if she is sleeping or something and she still has breathing room. I also just got a cloak that I am excited to try but I think I can only use it when I wear her in front. I've thought about getting a large shawl or throw blanket and wraping that around us but haven't tried it yet, I'll let you know how it goes!

I have about 20 yards of windbloc polarfleece. I think I am going to make a cape. :) I'd love to hear other ideas.

If you are crafty or have a crafty friend, you can take your favorite winter jacket, pick a matching warm material and create an insert with zippers on either side. That way you can wear it with or without. It's basically a large triangle cloth with zips.

how cold is it where you are? I like the kindercoat- it looks like a regular coat, just unzip the gusset and you've got room for baby & it keeps your neck/chest warm which was my big issue with the insert I put in my original parka.
Or, cheap route- get a couple yards of wool (I inherited a cute brown plaid) wrap it around you, belt it at the waist, drape over arms & pin with a strong broach at the chest. if you want, you can leave enough spare to make a hood of sorts. Since it is so very adjustable, you can wear baby any way you please- I wouldn't go sledding or play rough in this outfit, but for walks etc, it works and can look classy with a little practice (I got the idea from an SCA website on traditional Scottish garb)
I have also been known to use my Storch wrap over a midweight jacket (won't work over a thick parka)

But you know, Simon is so big I ALWAYS wear him on the back. I guess I could just get us a huge coat at do it that way?

a great place for a huge coat without the ginormous expense : the target young mens' department!

i bought something similar to this : www.target.com/Mossimo-Ho...624-8033412 when i was pregnant (thinking i would need the room. i didn't) it's coming in handy for babywearing!

yup- that's the basic idea, except i found mine at the thrift store. It's a woman's swing coat, so it already was a loose and boxy style, with a huge hood and faux fur trim. The important part isn't just being able to close it, but having wide/loose enough shoulders that it fits around baby across the neck line.

I bought a mamacoat (on sale but still pricey!)
and I have to say it was So worth the money...
                            I love it.
I can't find a link to it tho...maybe they stopped making it?
I bought it forever ago...while preggers.

very pretty, but looks like a front-wearing only

Suse's kindercoat is good for front and back- www.childrensneeds.com
I forgot to mention earlier- the Yupik eskimo up here belt the parka and just put baby right on in without a sling or anything- the belt keeps them from sliding down and you can wear baby however you want- I haven't done this, but thought I'd share

So my sister sent me a KIndercoat. The coat is nice and warm, but I was wearing the ergo with my little one on back and the neck hole for her is placed too far from my back and she couldn't get comfortable. She usually snuggles up to my back and falls asleep, this time she had her head leaned way back and tried to sleep but was fussy. I think today I will try it without putting her head in the "head hole" and see if it is any more comfortable for her, if not, then it goes back! Anyone else had any experience with this coat?

I'm a little confused- in the kindercoat back carry position, there is one head hole, not a neck hole & a head hole??? The front has a neck piece to keep your chest warm while wearing, but my kindercoat just has the back zipper gusset in the rear. baby should be able to just snuggle right against you. Did you use the ergo hood too? Maybe I just don't understand your question.

An update: I actually got the Divine Ride coat I thought it was a Suse's Kindercoat- but it was the new model out.

                                    www.childrensneeds.com/divine_ride.html

The Divine Ride was warm, but the hole for the baby head is very small and too far down- and well my kid has a big head so I talked with the retailer and they are gonna take it back. He even said that this run of the coat had a small head hole for the baby. He is gonna exchange it for the other "KinderCoat" and said that it had a bigger head hole for the baby. I will keep you guys updated when I get this new coat as it snowed here today and it looks like it will be a very cold winter.

Yes, the article of clothing you emulate is called an "arisaid" (ah-reh-setch), and does work well. At the time my daughter (my eldest child) was born, I was portraying a 16th-century Highland Scots woman at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire (North). The arisaid, a full-width (60" wide) of wool approximately four to six feet long, worn pinned at the shoulder, draped down the back, and belted at the waist, was already a required piece of costuming for me, and I quickly figured out how to drape it across my torso and rig it securely enough to tuck little Gwyn into the spot just above the belt. This was also a very visible demonstration for the patrons of how different from other cultures being portrayed, and even their own modern way of approaching life, the Scots mindset was (the manner of wearing this bit of fabric was not decorative at all, but utilitarian: it provided an easy way of transporting the cloth one relied on for such vital things as shelter and warmth, carrying water, etc.) It made nursing super-discrete, as well.

Of course, this was late August and September in Marin county, so the 35-plus pounds of wool I wore was not needed at all for warmth, but I made sure to wet the wool above where she nested regularly to get some evaporative-cooling action going. And, while I wore her in this fashion almost constantly (including throughout our long marches through Faire site from our camp to the stage), I did not feel comfortable wearing her while dancing.

      oooooh, baby!

i'm in love with the nori ... it's snuggly, comfortable and really warm. it's one of the best practical birthday gifts i've ever received.

it's definitely pricey .. $80. with shipping from www.attachedtobaby.com, but i really think if you're in a place where it gets nasty cold, the investment is worth the price.

my only issue was that i should have bought one sooner ... atb only had a large, so i bought it, but i would have preferred a medium .. they're definitely true to your shirt size.

all in all : a hit!

I always have to laugh when some of you mention things like nasty cold- in Alaskan nasty cold, the nori SO isn't going to cut it!
        Haha.
Does look nice for a moderately brisk fall tho ;-)

Ok so the saga continues I thought I would update this in case people are searching for this next year and can learn from what I have gone through :)
So I got the Suse Kindercoat, and it also just doesn't work. It is not big enough in the back to fit her body, she is 9 months old. it would barely zip with the two of us. I had a L and I am 130lbs, and she is 18lbs now. Also she just didn't really feel comfortable in it I think b/c her head is not resting directly on my back, there is part of the jacket rubbing in her face. (I wear her on my back with an ergo carrier.)

So I returned it and went to the thrift store and just got the biggest coat they had and it works way better! I know someone already mentioned to just do this so I would say that is the best way to go!

          happy holidays!

If you were lucky enough to be pregnant during the winter, you most likely already own a maternity coat. Your baby should fit nicely in the space provided for you belly if you wear them on the front. My midwife with my first told me that birth (ideally) was merely moving the baby "bump" from the inside and down low near your hips, to the outside and higher up on the chest.

what a great way to put it! I like that you can take the bump off every now and then for back relief, tho... and less kicking of the bladder & all that!

would you think about making one with lightweight, waterproof materials for the rainy days?

I would be careful in sourcing your materials- most waterproof fabrics at the fabric store are vinyl or pvc which both off-gas nasties, as well as being less durable. a 2mm polyurethane might work tho.
