sooooo, because i don't have enough carriers (ha!) i was thinking of getting a moby wrap (or something comparable) to use with the new babe. with the exception of the mei tai, i am pretty intimidated by non-structured carriers as i am nervous about securing it properly.
how difficult is it to wrap a newborn into a moby wrap? it probably looks a lot more complicated and scary than it really is!

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 1:22 PMit was the first carrier i bought & sol was a few weeks old when i got it. i needed to practice a few times, but it's pretty easy if you follow the instructions included. i found it most helpful to tie it on first, then slip baby in & out. it works well as a nursing cover (sort of) & because it's nice, soft jersey, i just kept it on when he wasn't in it.

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 1:44 PMI love my Moby! It is really easy once you get the hang of it and for us it came naturally. The only problem I've had is trying to do the back carry. If I don't have someone around who knows how to use it and help me adjust it in the back I can't do a rear carry. Like I-dra said, I just leave it on when Anaya isn't in it, it's warm and cozy and it's the only carrier she'll nap in now, sometimes when it is cold she lets me cover her all up but it's nice because if it warm you can uncover them a lot. Sorry, got on a little Moby rave :P -

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 1:59 PMno need to apologize, this is just the kind of enthusiasm i am looking for!
so i just read the instructions on their website for the hug hold and the cradle carry and it doesn't look any more complicated than anything i've already done, so now i am all excited! i'm definitely going to add it to my very short list of wants/needs for this next babe :)
thanks i-dee and hilary!

Thu, December 6, 2007 - 1:00 AMI loved the moby I used it for so long from when he was like 2 weeks to 4 months and then he hated it and I got an ergo -

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Thu, December 6, 2007 - 9:14 PMI loved my Gypsy mama wrap, it took maybe a week to get used to wrapping it and a little longer to get used to slinging him on my back to do a back-wrap. It was the best, and if it hadn't been for the constant Oregon rain, i'd probably still be using it instead of the Beco (tying it in a parking lot always led to the ends getting wet).

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Mon, December 10, 2007 - 8:06 PMi love my moby!!! i just got it and now, i think, i have almost every baby carrier that exists. i just finally accepted the fact that siena does not like to be carried in a cradle hold in the maya wrap i've been using. i've had the moby for 3 days and siena loves it!!! and it's pretty easy to use. as you read, there are different ways to use it, but it's great for newborns in a couple of them (cradle hold included). super soft wrap and you don't have to keep adjusting it. you can put it on before you leave the house and just put your baby in it when you reach your destination. that way you don't have to have the long material dragging on the wet ground. that may just be a problem for me though, as i'm in rainy portland. -

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Mon, December 10, 2007 - 8:11 PMyeah i am really psyched about it. i wore my older daughter in a sling for many many months from the time she was first born, but with a new baby coming and a toddler to tend to, i thought it wouldn't be so safe to have a newborn flopping around in a sling given all the bending over i am likely to do with a toddler. i think i'll feel a lot more secure with the new baby more closely wrapped to me as she will be in the moby.
i was telling my mom about the moby and the reasons i want to get one as well as how many of you ladies have gushed about how great they are, and she is buying one as a baby gift for another woman who has an older child and a new baby coming at the same time as mine! maybe she'll get one for me, too :)

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 9:51 AMI love this wrap! It's got great overall body support and it's so soft. I have a 1 month old and while she is sometimes fussy when I initially put her inside, once she's inside she loves it. I also have a maya sling that goes over one shoulder and it really hurts my back. It's not bad for short periods, but the moby has such great back support. All you'll need to do is practice wrapping it a few times and it'll soon be second nature. It helps to put baby inside after a feeding so he or she is relaxed. And oh yeah, it's great to wear topless for skin to skin contact! -

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Sat, January 5, 2008 - 8:36 PMmy partner and i love the moby-d wrap.
i like that it distributes the weight evenly over both shoulders and though it takes some getting used to--for everyone involved--it is worth it and really it is easy to use once you get the hang of it.
i wear it over a nursing tank and nurse the little one from inside without getting undressed or getting cold--there is a lot of fabric here but ends up fitting over shoulders like a t-shirt on me.
i recommend this wrap. -

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 8:38 PMI'm a little late on this thread, but I wanted to add that I love my moby wrap as well. It's been the best hands free carrier I've had for a newborn! I have two other slings and an Ergo carrier, and I love the moby the best! I think when my babe gets older I'll use the Ergo just as much, but for the wee months, the moby is the most snug and comfy for both mama and baby. -

Sat, January 19, 2008 - 9:19 PMOk everyone has covered this but... Moby wraps rock!
and why did I just find this tribe? -

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 9:56 PMas it turns out my partner has come out with a ring-sling preference to the moby wrap...who knew.
well as the baby grows i guess we wear her differently. it is good to have more than one wrap sling carrier and i use them both, but i prefer the moby-d. -

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 10:31 AMwhat's the diff between the regular ol' moby and the moby d? -
-
Re: moby wraps and newborns
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 7:14 PMThe moby d has the panel of decorative non stretchy fabric in the middle. I think it's a little more supportive because of this. I had a moby d and all my other mama friends had the regular moby. Non of them seemed to have any issues though regular moby's work just fine. The moby d is more money too I think 50 instead of 35 dollars.
I think my husband would have been more interested in trying the moby if it didn't have the silky flowery girly asian brocade panel though. He is a devoted ergo fan. I found that tying the moby was easier than I thought it would be. Newborns in particular love the womb like feeling of the moby. But after he could hold his head up at 2 months we were only using the ergo, then the beco and the poor moby has never gotten any love after the fact. But I'm saving it because I know if I ever have a second baby that is the carrier I would want to use. -

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 11:11 AMmy girl's a mover and shaker so i perfer the silk fabric panel because it holds her securely. i tried the regular moby but prefered the moby-d for its non-stretchy panel. it is pretty too. definitely a plus. -

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 6:43 AMthe gypsy wrap was less stretchy than the moby, but yeah- hubby could only be coerced into using it a few times because of the girly magenta flower batik i chose. -

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 10:35 AMWe had a black moby for father friendly-ness
We just gave is to my SIL last night, and as we walked out, I had to resist the urge to go grab it back. We haven't used it in months and months, and yet giving away all my infant stuff is hard. As we left my SIL asked if we were having more kids, and J says "absolutely not". I couldn't believe he had the nerve to answer that when he knows I'm not decided about it. but that's another conversation, and I'm officially thread jacking... -

Re: moby wraps and newborns
Tue, January 22, 2008 - 10:42 AMthat's something i'm sensitive about, too, fin. the decision to expand a family is a deeply personal one and it definitely is up to both parents to arrive at a conclusion together. when one gets ahead of the other, it's kind of like a slap in the face -- as in, i've made up MY mind, and i don't care what YOU have to say about it regardless of how much it's going to impact you.
i've made it clear to paul that i would love to have 3 kids total but he isn't exactly all for it. i asked him if we could give it time, and he agreed to that. so if we do have another after this one (which right now i hope we do, but i might change MY mind!), it won't be for several years and there will be a bigger gap between the kids. for a while though i was insistent (and sometimes even cocky about it) and i can see now how counterproductive and hurtful that attitude might have been.
but yeah, i have the sage green moby on my wish list so i can tie paul up in it, too :) -
