So, I got the sling, now what?

topic posted Thu, December 6, 2007 - 2:07 PM by  Ann
Ok, I feel like a dummy, not knowing how to use the sling I just ordered. So, I read the instructions and arranged the hoops, etc. And you wan't me to put my baby where? Isn't she going to fall out? I can't imagine her liking this! Aren't my arms a more secure place for her to be? I'm not a dummy when it comes to other baby things, but I can't understand how these work? Isn't she going to fall out of the sling? How the heck is she going to like it? I wouldn't! Any advice would SO appreciated!

btw, I ordered mine from Rockin' Baby Slings

I was was scared shitless when I first wanted to use my wrap, so I can totally relate! My best piece of advice is that you should really hook up with one of the babywearing groups. I've learned so much more by actually having someone physically there to help me. There's one that meets in Pasadena, and another in Ontario. You might even be able to find a mama in your town (via one of those groups - see below for links to the yahoo groups for the LA, OC and IE babywearing groups) that live close enough to help you with your ring sling through one of those groups.

    groups.yahoo.com/group/CarriedinComfort/

    groups.yahoo.com/group/koalaLA/

    groups.yahoo.com/group/OC_NINO/

Other than that, there's some resources online via TBW and mamamoto...here's a link to TBW:

and Ann, I'd be more than willing to meet up with you on a weekend to help you out - but I never did quite master my ring sling!

here is a link to some people in cali who can help, just look for someone in your area. you can also look on youtube for sling instructions. i guess some basic instructions are:

slip the sling over one shoulder like you see in pictures. make sure the rings are on your front, not your back, and the tail is hanging down, not up over your shoulder. the sling should be folded lengthwise already (when it's put thru the rings) forming a pocket in front of your belly. it sould reach no lower than the top of your pants. open the pocket & slip a small pillow or doll (for practice) into the pocket, in a laying down position with the head pointing either direction (away from or toward the rings). pull the fabric that is next to you up, so that the pillow is all the way down in the sling. when you put her in eventually, you can leave the pillow in there for filler, support, cushion & warmth. when "baby" is settled, pull the edge fabric of the tail thru the rings to make the rails (that's what they call the edges of the sling) snug, tight & secure. when the rails are taut, pull the body fabric tighter, the same way. don't let baby hang down below your center of gravity. baby needs to be up near your heart & boobs.

      good luck. practice practice practice!!!
