mei tai -- tying for the rear carry?

topic posted Fri, January 11, 2008 - 4:00 PM by
i have been doing a rear carry now that belly is burgeoning and i've been tying in the back, which is kind of hard. the waist strap is long enough to tie in the front, but i'm not sure about the shoulder ones. is there a special way of tying these so the kiddo is still supported but i can tie in front?

i'm wondering i guess if there is some special tying configuration i am missing out on!

thanks in advance :)

hmmm.... i haven't had the opportunity to babywear while pregnant, so i'm just reaching here... i'm trying to remember how long your waist straps are. my personal fave time is the tibetan-carry. ahem:

    1. put MT on backwards & upside-down, as usual, only on your backside. tie a bow in front, under the belly.
    2. have help to put little girl on your back. don't strain!
    3. bring MT up & over like normal, w/straps coming down over your shoulders.
    4. don't cross in an X, just bring them immediately under your armpits & cross or lexi-twist in back (see my site pics for the lexi-twist)
    5. bring straps around your waist, tie in a knot in front.
    6. untie the bow (waist straps).
    7. thread left waist strap thru shoulder strap, near armpit, from center to outward. (sorry if that makes no sense)
    8. do the same on the right side.
    9. thread each strap thru the opposite shoulder strap, then tighten, until shoulder straps don't feel like they'll slip off.
    10. tie these into a knot, bow or whatever works for you.

for pictorial instructions, google "tibetan tie" or "tibetan carry".
    xoxo

ooo i am gonna have to practice this tomorrow night when daddy is home to help. i think the mistake i made was crossing them in an X on my chest, but i am going to try the whole gamut of instructions you gave.

thank you so much i-dee! i'll let you know how it goes :)

oh, and puella, yes, i am due in march and the ring sling sounds great. i have not touched my yarn in many months but perhaps you can inspire me :)

Hmm, i didn't think about it til I-dee said "tibetan carry" but i used to do both tibetan and x-front with Sequoia all the time, and i found the x-cross actually took more of the strain OFF my shoulders. But then again i didn't have pregnant boobies to coddle.

with the tibetan both the upper and lower straps are anchored to your shoulders only, while the x-boob'ed one also anchors to your upper ribcage (aka breasts!).

great! I was thinking that if you dont want a ring sling, you might like a a podeagi...I have a beautiful scarlet one that I love but know that I will never use with oisin. And Id give it to you as a gift for your new babe. And dont worry about the poncho, lol......I couldnt ever expect you to have time to work on something like that with two lil ones running about!
Have you ever used a podeagi? I think that theywould be great for a small baby, becuase there is so much you can do with them. I also have a furry one, that I LOVE LOVE LOVE, but again, I dont think I will ever use....and it would make a GREAT blanket for when not carrying baby, if you are traveling somewhere or something. I have pics of them somewhere.

        Smile!

i would have to second what idra said, I always wear my top straps directly under the shoulders instead of the x front...ive never found that comfy. I havnt tried the bottome straps in the tibetan though. It sounds like it would work and be comfy.
Are you still interested in the ring sling you mentioned? Just let me know. IT wont be long now! Your due in March right? Or is it sooner! LOL!
