Ugh, I wore my Ergo out today to trader joes and by the end of our shopping adventure, my back hurt like hell! What am I doing wrong? Is the weight supposed to be distributed in a certain way? I think I have the straps too loose. Anyone else have these problem with back ache?

am i just not wrapping tightly enough?

I am currently using a sling hangs pretty low. My LO loves to fall asleep in it, but I am worried about taking her out in it since it's fairly easy to accidentally bu mp her head when say, I'm in a store or something. I heard the baby bjorns are bad? Is there anything for a 3-month + old that is great? Thanks!

OK, any of you mamas get back pain from wearing your babes all the time? I want to wear my baby as much as possible now. Hell, it's the only way he'll get a good nap in! BUT...my back is killing me! He's getting heavier now and I'm having a hard time with it. I use different carriers each day so not to work out too many of the same muscles, but my shoulders, neck and back are hurting already. Is this just because I'm too old and my body can't handle it? I didn't have this problem with my first baby. I also haven't gotten my ass out to yoga class since the birth and my baby is now 10 weeks old. Maybe that's the problem...

sooooo, because i don't have enough carriers (ha!) i was thinking of getting a moby wrap (or something comparable) to use with the new babe. with the exception of the mei tai, i am pretty intimidated by non-structured carriers as i am nervous about securing it properly.

how difficult is it to wrap a newborn into a moby wrap? it probably looks a lot more complicated and scary than it really is!

Which one do you like better, and why?

I've made a mei tai, but I don't really like dealing with all the straps, so I thought I'd like to try an Onbu. However, I can't find a starter pattern for one to save my life! For those of you sewing mamas out there that make them, how does the Onbu differ in construction from the mei tai?

i have been doing a rear carry now that belly is burgeoning and i've been tying in the back, which is kind of hard. the waist strap is long enough to tie in the front, but i'm not sure about the shoulder ones. is there a special way of tying these so the kiddo is still supported but i can tie in front?

i'm wondering i guess if there is some special tying configuration i am missing out on!

thanks in advance :)

Hi there, We're expecting a baby around mid-February. We are tossing around the idea of getting a sling carrier or an ergo carrier , so I thought I'd ask this group of experience Moms for your feedback based on your experience.

I live in a chilly climate and love the idea of wearing the baby, particularly when it is a newborn. I plan on walking off some of the baby weight at a nearby, cold and windy beach, so snuggling up with the baby under my jacket would be ideal. My husband would like to wear the baby as well. He's so snuggly, our baby will be so warm!

This is what I'm thinking...

A Hotsling or one of the pretty ones from Baby Drama.
-- I have never seen a baby in a sling that looked unhappy. What's a little challenging is fitting one of these I am large breasted but very small framed. I hope to have my former small waist back in due time after childbirth. The mobywrap is completely unappealing to me or anything with extra fabric. or d-rings etc. I know my style and simplicity is absolute key to success with any baby carrier. A downsize is what size works for me, will not work for my husband. So we will have to get something else for him at some point.

The ergo carrier.
--This seems like it might be more flexible in the long run. i.e., My husband could also wear our little one. Questions to Moms who use the ergo carrier, did you get the infant/newborn insert? How soon could you start carrying the baby around?? Is there a time limit that you can carry the baby (like with the baby bjorn..its supposed to be bad for their hips). Do your husbands use this too?

I would love to hear your input and would appreciate it!

So now that winter is here I would love to hear how people are wearing their little ones and keeping them warm. I have seen a couple of specialty wearing baby coats, but they are pricey so I was wondering what others are doing.

Keep that baby close!

My sister in law has a great eye, (she has published a few calendars here and there from pics she's taken abroad) and i was floored by this beautiful framed picture she gave me for Christmas of Sequoia and i in the woods. He's on my back in a carrier and i have a big coat around both of us, but the focus is all soft and fuzzy, so between the brown coat and the brown trees, it's just our faces hovering so close to one another. I love it!

I'd post it here but i only have the picture, not the digital copy.

Ok, I feel like a dummy, not knowing how to use the sling I just ordered. So, I read the instructions and arranged the hoops, etc. And you wan't me to put my baby where? Isn't she going to fall out? I can't imagine her liking this! Aren't my arms a more secure place for her to be? I'm not a dummy when it comes to other baby things, but I can't understand how these work? Isn't she going to fall out of the sling? How the heck is she going to like it? I wouldn't! Any advice would SO appreciated!

btw, I ordered mine from Rockin' Baby Slings

I'm *so* totally loving my pouch!

I just had to share about my new babywearing implement of joy!

PK is getting bigger, and she seems to be sloooooowly slipping out out my arms when I carried her while carrying other stuff into my apartment or to the car. I also have been really enjoying carrying her around on my hip around the house, but as she getting heavier it was getting tougher to hold on to her and do stuff one-handed.

So, I ran over to our trusted baby stuff shop, and picked up a baby pouch, from Tru Luv. I'm totally digging it! Totally has the quick put on/pop in ability, easy to wash, cute fabrics and is a totally great price at 35.00. I totally didn't even consider one before my friend suggested it, because PK hated the pouch/sling when she wasn't sitting up, and I thought she'd never go for it. But, it turns out she totally loves it too -she's able to nurse in it as well!

Here a link to a pic- it's not the one I bought, but see what I mean about cool fabric?

I went to my local christmas craft fair this weekend and was very pleased to see 3 diffrent people selling baby slings....but...and it's a great big but....2 were selling ringslings that were made with D-rings....D-Rings are very dangerous in the way that they can and do slip through each other....one person had no idea how to make slings...she had the seam about two inches from the flat of the D-ring..the other was sewing right along the flat part...but still....fabric streches...ya know....ok so I talked to both about the evils of D-rings as your sole support of baby....I hope the all the babies sake they listens....I hope you too will pass this along to people you know if they use D-rings if you agree....

Flying Falcon people can suck it

so, being the loudmouth advocate that i am, i wrote a letter to flying falcon, the designer/distributor of that ridiculous carseat torture device. this is what I wrote:
"Hello. I'm concerned about your product, the car seat carrier. This thing looks extremely awkward & heavy. I don't see how this is at all good for mama's back or legs. I understand the principle behind the design, however, there already exist many varieties of baby carriers, slings, wraps & such which promote attachment parenting, breastfeeding & better mama-baby communication. They also help mama to carry baby above her center of gravity. Perhaps the designer was not aware of these traditional carriers. Slings & other baby carriers have been in use for millennia, ever since First Woman. In a sling or other cloth carrier, baby is able & encouraged to move her head & adjust her position. When stuck in a carseat all day, baby is locked into one position for extended periods of time, without access to touch. My biggest concern is that the drawbacks will quickly outweigh any benefits this contraption may offer & mamas will be duped into buying something that will ultimately prove unhelpful."

This was the response I got back (with portions of my letter cut & pasted):
"Hello. I'm concerned about your product, the car seat carrier.
**Why?

This thing looks extremely awkward & heavy.
**Not much more than carrying a kid in a sling.

I don't see how this is at all good for mama's back or legs.
**That must be because you are narrow minded, look at it alone for what it is. Try not to even think of a sling.

I understand the principle behind the design, however, there already exist many varieties of baby carriers, slings, wraps & such which promote attachment parenting, breastfeeding & better mama-baby communication.
**O OK, What the hell was I thinking, I will quit then.

They also help mama to carry baby above her center of gravity. Perhaps the designer was not aware of these traditional carriers.
**No, I was aware.

Slings & other baby carriers have been in use for millennia, ever since First Woman. In a sling or other cloth carrier, baby is able & encouraged to move her head & adjust her position.
**But gravity of a sling forces the infant back into a fetal position. The infant stretch without being forced back into the fetal position. Infants in a car seat are actually able to stretched and stay stretched.

When stuck in a carseat all day, baby is locked into one position for extended periods of time, without access to touch. My biggest concern is that the drawbacks will quickly outweigh any benefits this contraption may offer & mamas will be duped into buying something that will ultimately prove unhelpful.
**So what are the drawbacks if this transport device is only used for its intended purpose. All you have really presented is a sales pitch for a sling. without giving a sales pitch for a sling, there is no real reason that this is a bad idea. In fact, it truly is a very good idea. I didn't put the handles on car seats, I just made it easier to carry them. As long as there is a handle on a car seat, the human animal will continue to carry them. The FALCON Infant Car Seat Carrier is a much easier way to carry an infant car seat hands free. People will always carry their car seats around the world, this is for those people. This device is for all the people who will never use a sling, who will never get your message.
My wife and I used our product for 9 months and Our Twins are just fine. They had all the loving and holding, probably more than most single kids will ever get. So please do not tell me that this is all about detachment.
If you want to fight something, go save the rain forest, global warming, the war in Iraq, tobacco or firearms, or even automobiles. All those topics are killing something or someone in someway everyday."

So, do you think his response was warranted? This was my reply:
"Wow, john sanchez. great customer service! i'll be sure to recommend your product to all of my friends & family. i'll also be sharing your response with everyone i know to let them know that your attitude SUCKS. you can't even get through one letter from a concerned citizen without being defensive, insulting or rude. I'm guessing you've been on the receiving end of a lot of criticism. hm... i wonder why??"

I wasn't REALLY trying to start shit, but it seems I did so anyway. C'est la vie...

storch wrap?

after hearing both puella and lara mention it, i decided to look into them and they look really nice! my question is, how hard was it for you to learn to do the different wraps? i don't have a whole lot of patience for that sort of thing but i am hoping that my impending mei tai will give some practice with it and i am thinking of getting a storch as well since i could wear my toddler in it while preggo and then wear the new baby in it when s/he arrives.

so for those of you that have them, do you love it? is there a big learning curve for all the different carries? do you think they are worth the big price tag ($100 for a wrap)?

wearing your toddler through pregnancy?

anyone have experience with this?

i love wearing my daughter and wish to continue through pregnancy but i'm not sure what the best and safest way to do this is. i normally wear her in the ergo but i am in the process of getting a mei tai from our very own i-dra! i figured it would be more versatile than a structured carrier.

if anyone has any advice on which carrier and what to consider when wearing a toddler preggo, i would really appreciate it!

thanks in advance,
lola

Just passing this bit of info along, that Nine In Nine Out (NINO) the baby wearing organization, has folded and reformed as Babywearing International. Though they still have their old NINO website up, new website is http://www.babywearinginternational.org/ .

None of the chapters have folded but as far as I can tell, are existing as general babywearing groups until BWI has organized and structured itself.

The link to the announcement can be found here: http://www.thebabywearer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=152202

At a local baby wearing meeting...and man, it was scary!! Parker cried when I got her up in it, but I think she was freaking because I was really nervous! I had a really nice woman help me get into the position, and I think I have a good grasp of what I need to do...I just need to practice a bit..get my hubs to help..

She gave me a really good piece of advice though that I thought I'd share - rather than trying a variety of carries all at the same time, work on one carry, master it, and move on to the next one. Seems pretty logical, huh?

Moroccan babies

a friend of mine just started in the Peace Corp in March, she's somewhere in a podunk village in inland Morocco and writes these hilarious emails now and again from an internet cafe. I wanted to share part of her last letter, thought y'all would enjoy:
---------------------------

I went to my first real party a few weeks ago. It was called a Cyber (the "r" is actually used to represent a letter we don't have in English.) Seven days after a baby is born, a Cyber is thrown by the family to celebrate the naming of the baby. Now, I would like to note that nowhere in the course of this party did I ever actually see the new baby or the mom. Of course, who needs babies and moms around when there's drumming, dancing, and singing to be had? The celebration lasted two days: the first day was for the mothers in the community (and trust me, the entire community shows up to these parties!) the second was for the maidens, and each night was a mix of the boys and girls. I didn't go to any of the boy/girl parties (mainly as an attempt to avoid the old women in the community trying to set me up with various boys for me to take home to America. Uh, thank you, no.) But I made it to both of the other two (who cares if I'm not a mother!) and it was fantastic. It reminded me of the parties back home - women drumming and dancing and call-and-response singing. Yay!

I went to another party this last week. Now, get this: apparently, they throw a Cyber when the baby is born. But, at about age of four months, there is another party because the mom is no longer schlepping the baby around by carrying her at her front, now she can carry the baby on the hip. So, to celebrate this new rite of passage, there's another party. This time only one with all the women in the community there. Oh, I love a good party!
--------------------------------

pretty neat! at four months they move from front to hip, not a damned thing about them ever hitting the ground!

Toddler wearing....

How many of you still wear your toddlers & "preschoolers"? We are going to the beach soon, and plan to go out & purchase some fabric to serve as a wrap, but most of the babywearing focus is on ... well... babies! Our girls are 2 & 3 now... and while we have a double stroller, they've only ever ridden in it once & neither of them liked it! Usually we wear one in the ring sling while the other is carried or runs on her own two feet. But this is our first extended family trip where we'll all be going out of town & staying overnight in a totally unfamiliar setting (2 nights actually... eek!). Double strollers are huge, bulky, and just take up too much room!

So... the other thing I was just wondering is if any of you use fabric wraps to carry *bigger "babies"* in, and if so... what kind of fabric & which types of carries work best for you? The 2 year old is just over 20lbs... the 3 year old is just under 40lbs.... maybe 35lbs or so....

I have been all over the 'net and the Wear Your Baby site, but haven't been able to find many pictures of people wearing toddlers. Maybe there are videos on youtube or something... I guess it won't hurt me to go look.

Can someone who owns one of these structured carriers explain to me how to do a hip carry? I've had mine for a few weeks now and carry front and back, but i haven't been able to make the mental picture of how the straps go for a side carry.

And yes, the Ergo and Beco are configured almost identically. (Almost) same placements, straps, clips etc.

and in completely unrelated news- whilst browsing at Target today i saw they're now carrying Hotslings pouches! Viva la bebe!

A friend of mine has one of these. I tried it on yesterday and, OMG, it freakin’ rocks! So comfy and GORGEOUS and I love the lack of waste straps. The woman that made my friend’s (http://www.babyspaceslings.com/pages/onbuhimos.php) doesn’t make them anymore. I found them sold here: http://www.peppermint.com/onbuhimo.html , but I’m not crazy about the fabric choice. Anyone know where else to buy them online, or better yet, maybe one of the amazing sewing mamas on here makes them or want to give one a try?

Am I the only one? and which pack carrier do you like the best?

Who doesn't like the Ergo? I tried my friends and it was a bit difficult to get one especially because my little one is still just riding on my front. The straps were too hard to buckle, maybe I just need to try it out and practice more but... Also, can you do a hip carry with it? Because I couldn't figure out how. :(

On an entirely different note, Anaya has stopped enjoying being in a carrier unless she is asleep. She also does not like her car seat. She hates to be restrained. Bummer for me, but she still loves to be in my arms. I'm hopeful that she will enjoy the pack carrier I get. Which one have you ladies enjoyed? I keep heaing about the Kelty but I haven't tried any yet as Anaya isn't quite ready to use it.

oh man, these people are gonna put the rest of us out of business! i finally got mine today (cranberry w/camel inner) & i gotta say, i am officilly on the ergo bandwagon. and those things are like the harley davidson or baby carriers - they will never devalue! i could use mine for years, sell it on ebay & probably only be out 10 bucks or so. i love it. i will definitely (obviously) still be making & using mei tais & onbus, but i can certainly forsee my ergo getting alot of use.

I made a carrier that is the same style as a hot sling www.hotslings.com
She likes to be carried in it but the idea of nursing her in it doesnt seem doable. Any suggestions would be great...

Beco baby carrier

So I think I'm gonna do it. Buy a Beco babycarrier for 119 bucks. Here is my justification: My boy is 5 1/2 months and 22 lbs. We are getting married this summer and we might have to wear him during our ceremony depending on his mood. And the Beco supposedly can carry a child up to 55 lbs. and I feel like that could possibly be in my future. www.ecobabies.com is where I'm gonna get it. Does anyone have or know of anyone who has one that doesn't like it? I love our ergo but feel like it might be nice to have two carriers that we love.

I'm SO excited!
We spent a good 3 hours walking around in the Ergo in the park...
(she's still not willing to do the Maya or cloth wraps, but I can live with that)
I'm very excited to officially join the ranks of baby wearers anonymous:-)

Would that be possible to transform my mei tai in podaegi? I thinks a podaegi would be more appropriate now for my daughter but I don't have the money to spend an other $80 for a carrier. Any idea how I could do that?

There is an awesome section in this book about baby carriers. I have never seen MOST of these and it's very interesting to see who and what and how these babies are carried. It's neat to see what these carriers are made out of and how they are decorated. I bought this book and it's just great for the pictures.

So my daughter was very rarely worn...very bad back...and she was happy....no issues....held yes, worn no....then my son came along...and at 3m my friend changed my life forever.....she attached my son to me....he had colic and always in my arms...but wearing the front pack was murder....ten minutes and I was in pain...so she took the sling and attached my son to my chest and said there...you will love it...I thought to myself in ten minutes I will be takeing it off...ya like ten years....I borrow other peoples babies just so I can wear them...I love it....I still wear my son who is down to the last few months of being worn...he is almost 3...so here is the deal....I loved the sling but...I hated having to wear my son, carry the diaper bag and my purse....then after I was done wearing my son where would I put the sling....so after much playing I deciede I like my slings wide....and because they were wide I didn't need the tail...so I took and closed the tail and put a drawstring in it...and now I am diaper bag, purse free because it all goes in this great pocket...then when i am done the sling stuffs into the pocket...I make them out of all kinds of fabric...I look for really fun, funky or trendy fabrics...I use brass rings from Nestmom...I sell on ebay and really don't use any other kind of carrier except for a framed backpack...I do really want an ergo type carrier....I could have another year of wearing my son....
My sad sorry is I will not have anymore children to wear....my back could not take it again...but I love babywearing and I want to make sure anyone who thinks they may want to wear their baby have a means and a way to do it....

So here is my deal to all of you....I charge $25 plus shipping to make a sling...I can make any type of carrier...I would like to gift all of you with a cotton or cotton blend sling for $15 plus shipping till the end of the summer....I will also discount custom slings like fleece or silk brocade....

Hugs and happy wearing....

so we have the ergo .. and i love it .. it's comfortable, sturdy and very safe for long walks & errands, but i think i need a ring sling for shorter walks to the park or for around the house when all she wants is to be held and i have stuff to accomplish.

we have the hotsling, but i was never comfortable with its hip carry ... any recommendations for a ring sling?

It gives recommendations for each carry by age, whether it's a good carry fro a woven or stretchy wrap, and the pluses and minuses to each carry they illustrate. cool stuff!

ok kids. i looked all over to see if it had already been done and, after i was satisfied it had not, i went ahead & designed my own carrier. now, i've posted some pix so you can see what i've been up to. the one i'm wearing is only my prototype; i will be making the retail carriers out of a sturdier fabric (the green is an old 50s bathrobe i hate) & will have padding for the shoulders & behind baby's head. i think a hood for sleepin' tots will also be an option.

the basic design is a body like a hmong, but with channels through which the 2 straps thread & tighten to fit snug around baby. there is no need to tie around the waist, either, for those who find that uncomfortable.

i don't have a name for it yet. please tell me what you think (or if you've seen it elsewhere).

When i went over to my mum's yesterday (gotta pass on the Happy Mother's Day wishes), she surprised me with an old carrier of hers that she used to carry my 22 yr old brother and 20 yr old sister as toddlers. This is the second older carrier she's given me, the first being this mesh contraption (I-dra or Puella? anyway, someone identified it as an ombu) that i'd use in the shower with Sequoia. It was over 39 yrs old and she'd used it on most of us kids, both for carrying but especially for swimming pool outings (we grew up in TX- it's damned hot).

This newer one was called "Sara's Ride" according to the tag, and was meant for a hip carry. It's a *small* triangular cloth with a hip belt and an upper belt. I put Sequoia in it earlier today while cleaning the kitchen and altho he was content, i can't see using it very much, the upper belt actually goes around and across your neck- it got owie in a very short time! But still, i get a kick out of thinking about how women were still finding ways and making things to carry their babies (and some, like Sara's mama- making a living from it). We're pretty blessed to be able to easily find and disseminate information through the internet, i can type "baby carrier" in a search and not only find a bazillion different carriers, i can access free patterns, advice, support groups, other mamas- everything!

Anyway, thought i'd share. I'll post pics once i take some....

I am a work at home mama. My husband works about 10-12 hours a day as a historic restoration carpenter.
Everyday we go for a walk in the podegi or mei tai and Solomon falls asleep. I can come back home, take him off very slowly and gently and lay him down and he'll sleep.
This really does save me.
Sometimes I wish life was more like a village where we REALLY did live close and help one another. That's besides the point.

cool tip for backwearing

seeing cheryl's pic of her carrying her 2 heavy-looking girls gave me inspiration to start making my mei tais longer in the body. cheryl, how long, top to bottom, is your mei tai?

i'm normally making them about 20" tall & this works great for smaller babies, but my son is getting bigger & when he falls asleep on my back (every time!) he tends to lean one way or the other & over the top of the carrier, putting more strain on my shoulders. it is for this reason i will make them taller. well, for folks who are having the same issue, this is what i came up with: i use a scarf about 10" wide & long enough to wrap around us both & tie in front. then i bring it behind me, center it over him - either over his head or just under it - & bring it under my armpits to tie in front. this makes me feel like he is more secure, bringing his upper half closer to my body & keeps his head from "falling off" when he's asleep. it also looks really cool! it looks like sort of a marriage between african & asian babywearing styles. i'll post some pics next time i do it.

Packs, Ergos, and Podegis, Oh My!!!

Okay so I actually ahve a question and a statement...

First of all I want a hiking pack to carry Anaya for the summer because we get so hot when our bodies are close together that I might not be able to carry her in the summer, bummer! I also want an Ergo because the just look soooooo comfy and everyone that I meet that has one is in love.

Next, my question. Now I know that the Podegi has only two straps and the Mei Tai has four but what are the other differences? Why use one over the other? Pros and cons?

So,
I have a frien who's baby is one week younger than my Solomon. She has had colic and still is very fussy. She stayed with us last night. Today we went for a walk and I let her use my Mei Tai and she wore her on her back. The baby fell fast asleep and never fussed one time. I was amazed. I just wanted to share. I think the baby felt relaxed and safe.

I have done a lot of research about carrying your baby, different types of carriers, bought several and made on podegi. Joshua simply hasn't ever tried any of: Baby Bjorn, Mei Tai, Ring sling, Podegi, padded sling (I hated that too), moby wrap. I do not know how to get him to try them out.
He says he'd just rather carry Solomon himself. We don't have a stroller so he's being carried reguardless but I want him to know the good thing of baby carriers.
Any advice?

Has anyone actually started a Nine In Nine Out group? I love the support available at La Leche for breastfeeding, and would love to see something like that locally for babywearing, but I only have so much energy personally. How hard is it to get going? Did you have any problems finding folks to share the burden of facilitating?

Introducing myself

Fellow junkies,

After lurking for far too long, I'm finally getting around to introducing myself. I am a baby-wearer going on 3 years now. I carried my first son,
Elijah, pretty much everywhere from the day he was born until just past his second birthday. I still carry him in the ergo occasionally, but he is
pushing 40 pounds now, so it is getting kinda ridiculous (fortunately he loves to walk). I now have a new wee one, Micah, and am so happy to be slingin' again!!

Some of the carriers in my repertoire:

blue sling
yellow sling
ergo
snugli
and I just ordered my first mei tai!

When Eli was 6 months old, I started a parent-baby hiking group. Two years later it is super popular and going strong. It's been a fabulous way for my husband and I to meet like minded folks. I highly recommend starting one in your area! Here is a link to our baby-hike website:

This coat rocks becasue you can wear your bigger baby in this coat with a hood for two in extreme weather. Kentucky winters pretty cold. Apparently in Canda the Inuit Indians use something like this for baby wearing.
I read this in 'Mothering' Magazine. I think I might get something like this for this coming winter. Ah, it's soring in KY!

Carrier roll call!!

Just curious, what wraps/carrier/slings/pouches do you have?? Which ones are you looking to buy or make??

My list:
I have a:
EllaRoo Wrap
one generic blue Sarong
Rocking Mama Baby sling

I'm hoping to make a water UVA/UVB wrap whilst I'm on maternity leave for the beach and the pool...should be fairly easy, once I find a good fabric..

My wish list:
Ergo
Mei Tai - which kind, I'm not sure yet..I'd like to be able to do a forward-facing carry with it at some point, or at least have the option...any suggestions would be nice.. :-)

oh, and the nutty thing is, as some of you know.......My baby girl won't be here until mid-May..I'm such a freak.

I'm in sunny Texas for the week, visiting family and the trip woulda been sheer hell without my wrap.
I had Sequoia snugly wrapped onto my front once we hit the airport, and a heavy school backback with my dinosaur laptop on my back. Jesse was walking me to the counter pulling my 2 enormous check-in bags when he remembered the carseat. Back he ran to grab it, and i felt like such a badass being able to continue walk through the airport- with three heavy bags and a wiggly baby, all by myself. Gods i love good baby carriers!

I just traded some baby clothes for a brand new Ergo backpack bag attachment. It has two loops that connect around the shoulder straps and two D-rings on the Ergo. I was gettin really sick of carrying a purse around with the Ergo on b/c it seemed to hurt my neck. I bet something similar could be made at home and could even strap on a mei tai. I just love love love it I went into the coop with it attached to the ergo and managed to cram all my groceries in it. I'm looking forward to hiking with it and just being extra bag free around town with it. I will post a pic of it someday. Just thought you mama's should know about such a great invention.

What is on your wish list?

I want a Mei Tai and about 6 yards of fabric for a wrap, I haven't figured out what kind yet, any suggestions? Someone mentioned the kind of jersey knit that rolls at the edges. Also, I'm a big girl, 5'7" and 215, I wear size 18 pants and dresses, 6 yards is enough, yes? I also saw someone with a Kangaroo something, I don't remember what she called it, it looked so sturdy, made out of fleece, it was a non-ring sling. I want it!

i'm starting to do some research into the best Mei Tai on the market. so far it seems that the Freehand and the Babyhawk are the favorites. it also seems that the people who really like the Freehand like it for the narrower straps. i checked out the Freehand site and i LOVE some of the fabrications. of course the ones i like are the most expensive.

any advice, opinions... people wanting to make me one???? *wink*wink*

Tummy 2 Tummy DVD

I bought it a few weeks ago, and is quite a handy little DVD!!
It covers stretchy and woven wraps, asian wraps, pouches and ring slings, and has some basic as well as some more advanced carries..
I bought it more or less for the woven wrap bit, but found that they have some basic wrap suggestions for sarongs, and they show you how to construct your own wrap (which is kind of a 'duh! why didn't think of that!' thing but..)

They also donate 5% of the profits to NINO (Nine in Nine Out babywearing organization)

may i say i am absolutely giddy over how well this tribe has done since its' start. i am so glad that babywearing & carriers are so popular & that there are other parents out there who love this topic as much as i do!!

i'm in the process of designing my own style of mei tai carrier, one i've not seen yet. i hope it works in real life as well as it does in my head! i feel like a copycat making & selling a common style. i would feel better about selling "my own brand". as soon as i finish the prototype (if this boy would ever let me get some work done!) i'll post pics.

Singing!!!

So I went in for a lactation appointment last week to try and get my little on who was 2 1/2 months preemie and now almost at her due date onto the breast and we were given an over the shoulder baby holder that actually fits her and it has been great, she loves to be in the sling and falls right to sleep right away. So I've been having a hard time taking a shower, maybe once a week or so and I saw that someone had posted about mesh shower slings. So here's what I did:

I took one of those mesh laundry bags and trimmed off the bottom. I tied a small knot in it and put the drawstring on the bottom, it works perfectly! With the drawstring below her I am not worried about her falling out because it keeps the bottom from stretching.

So today before our second lactation appointment we showered together for the first time! Singing in the shower, now I have someone to listen to me.

Also at our lactation appointment she actually latched, for the first time in weeks, and she got 22cc's by breast!!!! That's the most she's ever taken!!! So today was a great day and we are happy and relaxed together as she sleeps in my arms.

so for those of us who are complete novices at this... WHERE DO WE BEGIN??

i've seen so many great photos of women with their babes on their backs but i don't know what the best/easiest carrier is for a beginner... not to mention the thought of hoisting my bunny from the safety of my arms onto my back kind of freaks me out.

babywearing in winter

i'm just full of questions tonight...

currently the temps outside are in the low teens. i've resorted to keeping the little grrl in her baby carrier under bunches of blankets because i don't have the slightest idea as to what kind of carrier would fit over my layers let alone keep baby shielded from the elements.

suggestions? besides heading south??
