My Ronco food dehydrator has finally crapped out on me. I wont be getting a working oven for my home till next year. I have a convection/microwave that I use for everyday cooking. Dou you guys have any alternate methods for making Beef Jerky in an apartment building? I love beef jerky and I have some friends that I make some for as Christmas gifts.

Thu, November 5, 2009 - 5:31 PMOn a side note: I have never tried living off of beef jerky before. Would it make a great survival food in terms of nutients? I heard that beef stays in your system for 2 weeks digesting. -

Thu, November 5, 2009 - 5:56 PMIt is high in proten and salts but you will need other things besides jerky. Of course you can dry fruits and vegs.

Wed, November 18, 2009 - 7:22 PMif you eat just meat, yout protein count gets too high, your ketones become imbalanced and your kidneys will eventually shut down

Re: Beef Jerky
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 5:54 PMPut the meat between to air filters (make sure the filters are made of natural fibers not artificial like fiberglass) and hook them to a square fan. All you need is air movement. Heat just speeds up the process. From what I have heard you are better off not using a heat source it makes it taste better. The filters keep bugs off the meat.
As for the meat staying in your body for 2 weeks I doubt it. I have eaten a lot of jerky in my day and the only thing you want to watch out for is constipation. Drink lots of water if you eat a lot of jerky. -

Re: Beef Jerky
Wed, November 18, 2009 - 7:26 PMif you are salting your meat so its cured and all blood removed, all you need is to dry it
hang it someplace where bugs cant get to it and the air flows thru freely, itll dry nicely
or take an old fridge, convert it to a smokehouse and have really good jerky
