Front Yard Gardens Under Attack?

I am fortunate to be able to have a backyard garden on my corner lot property. It's surrounded by a fence and it unseen from the street. But some of my neighbors are not so fortunate, and have literally turned their front yards into mini-farms. As we live in a mixed neighborhood of African American, Latinos, Asians, and White, the veggies run the gamut of mustard/collard greens, ttrellisis of green beans, tomatoes, sunflowers, lettuce and lots of corn. I live in a solidly middle to lower middle class working neighborhood and our gardens are not hobbies.
Of course there are those from other parts of town, or old timers in our neighborhood, who don't like the look of outdoor gardens. One comment was, "It looks like the Depression all over again."
So a complaint was made at the city council. Their argument to the council was...like junked cars....front yard gardens become an eyesore.
While I admit that some gardens look better than others...none of them rate as an eyesore.
I doubt anything will come of this, as we have a pro-Green mayor who is pushing for more gardens, private and community, still I'm pissed off than anyone would attempt to limit what I grow on my own property front or back!
Sorry...just needed to vent.

When I lived in the hell that is called Napa, I got a $500 ticket for having a front yard garden! Apparently our asshole neighbor across the street didn't like it. We stole his sprinkler heads more than once in retaliation. I am SO glad I don't live in Napa anymore!

I honestly don't think we'd get too many complaints in Vallejo considering NO ONE in our neighborhood, except for two neighbors has any front yard landscaping. Even we just have a dirt patch right now (when we moved in it was just dead grass no matter how much we watered so we ripped it out and haven't planted anything yet). I've been contemplating a front yard garden and if we do one, it will be all raised beds surrounded by more ornamental perennials like Rugosa roses, grapes, currants, blueberries, etc. I'd like to keep people out of my yard and these plants won't be as attractive to them. We actually have a really large front yard, so it's good real estate that can be used productively.

When does the city council meet again? I'd like to forward a list of eyesores to them---Hummers. ANYWHERE, public or private. Starbucks stores---they really make my skin crawl. Cigna offices---now, there's an sore on the face of civilization!

    :-P

Seriously, do they really have nothing better to do with their time than debate citizens growing their own food where people might see it?

Your local councils sound as silly and corrupt as the ones in Aus. Really makes you think if there even required anymore.

Wow, I guess old traditions die hard (thou shalt have a lawn and mow it every Saturday). What a shame. I think everybody benefits with front yard gardens. I love looking at what other people have, what they might grow too much of and want to share. I love getting over the fence gifts of apples, fresh eggs, tomatoes. It makes everyone more neighborly. And I had no idea Napa was so anal - I always thought of it as farm-type country. I lived in Sonoma for a while (your neighbor over the hills) and gardens and chickens were pretty common, but true, not in town.

Oh you don't even know the half of it! Napa was hell! Right before we moved out of the county, they were trying to make it illegal to have more than 6 chickens if you had less than 5 acres. WTF is that?

Yep backyard chickens are illegal here too, unless you can get everyone on the block to sigh off on it. I think its funny that people want to believe they live "in town" when the population is a mere 720. My neighbors hate my backyard garden. They griped that I dug up a perfectly good lawn to plant vegetables. Ack! So I planted pole beans this year.

I am sorry to hear of your problem. What is wrong with these people? I know that it is not that easy to move, but it sounds like you live in a neighborhood full of robots. Or else, they lost their souls somewhere along the way. Vegetable gardens can be quite beautiful when landscaped with flowers, and herbs of various kinds. I live in N. New Mexico down a dusty dirt road. We complain about fast cars, dirt bikes, but at least we aren't surrounded by tight asses. Good luck with your fight. Sometimes it seems like the prevailing values are upside down.

I couldn't appear at the last city council meeting...but I tend send a letter which was read into the record.
My point was this: Some people grow vegetables, primarily cherry tomatoes and strawberries in front yards or along the edges of yards and sidewalks for the beauty of these plants. Will any ordinance ban these plants? If not, would a neighbors complaint suddenly cause the city to cite said person? Obviously this would not be considered a garden...On the other hand...one person flowers may be another persons garden. Also, many people have apples, plums, lemons and avocadoes and some quince trees in their front yards that drop fruit on to city sidewalks. Will this be considered a fruit orchard.?Many people, my self included, are given fruits ore fruit products from these trees. Will the city or health department FINE individuals for making jams and jellies in kitchens rather than inspected kitchens? Probably not...but it is possible.
Front yard gardens are definitely used for self sufficiency. Isn't odd the city allows PUBLIC gardens and advocate children start gardens at their schools...but the average citizen cannot grow food for themselves on their own property? How odd.
Simply said, while the city may have the ability to ban gardens in front yards...isn't it possible someone may object to backyard gardens due to the smell of compost? or the attraction of bees? or perhaps the simply dislike the smell of fennel on a summer day?

      Gardens are an American tradition.
      Please don't ban this.

I was informed the topic has been table indefinitely. I'm sure I'm not the reason they tabled it, but I like to think I helped.

All this at a time when more people need to grow food on their property. What the hell? You could always look into edible landscaping too to help with beautifying a yard with plants you can eat...
Good luck and keep up the good fight.
