Looks like an El Nino winter is going to hit our coast. We need to stock up on wood, as much of our home heat comes from our wood burning stove.
We haven't gotten our wood in yet...but what will you folks be burning. Here in the bay area we tend to burn pine, oak, and eucalyptus.

Hi! We live in a little valley in Montana on the river where hundreds of cottonwoods, aptly named "widow makers", drop their limbs all of the time due to wind, heavy snow, etc. We burn the cottonwood mostly from already fallen and weathered cottonwood..bark makes good starters and a sizable log will last all night in the wood stove.. which is more than adequate to heat the house. We throw in some pine now and then from the nearby hills but mostly subsist on the cottonwood because its free and everywhere.. It isn't the most efficient wood but its more efficient than using propane, etc. :-)

I burn almost everything I can get my hands on -
untreated scraps from the local builders for kindling, loquat pruned from my tree, an old cherry tree I cut down from my yard, almond from dad, and oak taken down from next door (neighbor sans fireplace), and various fruit tree wood and hardwoods like madrone, apple, maple, manzanita, port orford cedar, etc etc etc from arborist-friends and land-owning friends. I've stockpiled a couple of cords of wood for this winter, and last night had the first real big fire to heat the house.
    free is best!

I lived on a walnut match all my young life. Mom and Dad burned a lot walnut wood and walnut shells. It was hard to get going, but once lit it gave a hot fire that lasted quite a while. Old walnuts we could not sell went into the wood burning stove and kept the house warm on long winter night. Nice aroma to wake up to.
A neighbor bought the property a few years ago and still gives me a huge sack of walnuts. Those we can't eat, cook with, or give away as gifts go into the wood burning stove.
I think we have about 20 or 30 pounds left.

I still have three years worth of slabwood from last year. probably have 5 years stacked up total. mostly all oak. good oak will last several years when stacked right. we burn from kin till kant but are running on passive solar at present. earliest winter here in the 30+ years i've been here.

A storm is hitting the bay area as I write this. Gale force winds. We are burning walnuts and wood scraps from an old fence.

Yep! The storm has hit NJ today; snow showers all day; about 3" or so.
Moments ago I heard lotsa crashing, heavy, wet branches full of leaves.
          Firewood for next year perhaps.
We are burning locust, oak, and maple. Just covered the woodpile today; just in time.
Lost power for two hours up on my mountain.
Burning candles too as winter seems to be early again this year.
First snow came before Halloween last year as well.
May you stay warm, safe, and comfortable brothers and sisters!

Oh god yes, my well-meaning friend insisted on breaking up a futon frame someone had left at his building and burning it in MY fireplace, and of course it was layered in varnish and whatnot. NOT nice. Hubby & I now have various kinds of natural logs including pine, eucalyptus, and a plum tree we removed from our backyard.

Just bought some Eco-Fire logs to see how effective they are. Made from cardboard and wax. The only drawback is it is difficult to light and the smell is not very inviting. It does warm up the house though.
I think it might use these primarily as fire starters.

my uncle has alot of pinecones that he burns every year.

I get lotsa cardboard at my current job. Is it safe to burn plain cardboard? Any drawbacks to it? Will it clog up a chimney fast?
