I'm not much of a drinking man any longer. Diabetes and maturity caught up with me. But, we have put aside alcohol in our supplies, for drinking, trading, and medicine making.
What alcohol would you folks stash away for such needs...or just for the pleasure of a stiff drink after a long day?
My wife prefers Capt. Morgan's Spiced Rum for her winter drinks. She mixes it with hot apple juice, a stick of cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg.
On those rare times when I toast to good friends and good fortune, I tend to enjoy Patron Tequila.
For a sweet drink I tend to go for Kualua or Triple Sec.
Lastly, any vodka or everclear for medicine.

Mmmm....booze......
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 5:40 PMYup, everclear in quantity for a variety of uses---none of which are recreational. :-) After that, 100 proof vodka, same reasons. Then Canadian Mist for a particular bang-up cough syrup I know how to make; half a coffee cup plus two regular aspirin and even if you have walking pneumonia you'll be fit to leap out of bed and lash the serfs.
I only drink 151 proof rum...preference for Bacardi, will drink Monarch. Dunno why, but 80 proof anything gives me a hang over which I really resent. I probably need to figure out something nice to do to it other than a Cuba Libra as diet cola is likely to be in short supply....but I don't drink often anyway as my SO is a 12Stepper and won't so much as allow it in the house in any container, organic or inorganic. *That* backstock I have to leave with my sisterfriend.

Re: Booze
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 8:11 PMHell yeah, pot, pit bull's, booze!!! We're turning into a mississippi trailer park. lol Just kidding guy's.
I dont drink much. If I'm camping with some folk's and they break out some beer then I'll have a few. Back in my PM (pre-married) day's I packed some of that good captain morgan spiced rum on white water canoe trip's cause packing a cooler of ice and beer wasnt good when your trying to keep you boat light and boyant. The temp. would be mid 60's in the day and get down to the teen's sometime's at night. Sipping on some captain morgan huddled up around the camp fire can keep spirit's up.
Kualua's/white russian's just mess me up. you think your all right then bam!! your drunk. -

Re: Booze
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 10:50 AMI don't drink at all, never have, nor my wife. But I know alcohol is useful for a lot of purposes. For now all I'd ever stock would be rubbing alcohol... But as I learn more about making medicine I might keep whatever works best for that.
I don't know if I'd keep it for trade, It's one of those things that can drive the low-lifes to drastic measures if they find out you have more of it. Probably the most looted item in New Orleans back in the big storm.
Although I'd be a good candidate for wine collecting...that stuff would just sit and age and age... nobody around here is gonna drink it!

Re: Booze
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 11:09 AMI keep vodka and everclear for making medicines, a little wine for cooking (my red wine beef stew is to die for), but I'm not a drinker anymore. Back when I was, I was a gin floozy, Bombay Sapphire and tonic, extra limes.
I do know how to make wine, beer, and cordials, though, so we could always ferment ourselves some trade goods if we needed to. -

Re: Booze
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 11:31 AMAlcohol, along with coffee, was one of those " aquired tastes " that I never aquired. I cannot STAND the taste of beer. That said, I do enjoy a wee dram of Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch whiskey on occasion, and keep brandy on hand for cooking & medicinals. I would like to start brewing mead, one of the only alcoholic beveredges I enjoy. -

Re: Booze
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 2:41 PMwe don't drink alcohol, but cook with wine, keep everclear on hand for medicinal purposes. i think that cigarettes will be easier and better trade items than alcohol if it ever comes to it.

Re: Booze
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 8:28 PMi make my own wine, i havent tried making beer yet but i imagine i can do it, as for what booze i keep on hand i just have whatever is fermenting at the moment, i am not worried about keeping a stock pile of booze as i know how to build a still and i really needed a high proof alc im sure i would be able to acquire some as things were going to hell.

Re: Booze
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 10:00 PMJugs of vodka seem like the best survivalist booze to me. Not that I have any stashed away. It would be good for barter and bribes. -

Re: Booze
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 10:25 AMFor trade goods in the future I would take really cheap 100 proof vodka, Fitler it 6 times through a brita filter pour the into sterilized bottles and cork them seal with wax and store like wine. This will also work for tintures and other medicines.
I don't drink much myself either but I like the occassional glass of Bourbon and a few Guinness on St. Patrick's Day.
Oh and every once in a while a Sunday brunch coffee with a bit of Bailey's in it.
I know how to make Bourbon style whiskey. I just need to learn to be a cooper and get all the grain and distilling equipment.LOL -

Re: Booze
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 10:58 AMI have to add this story. A few years ago I ran out of vodka for tinctures. Not a major crisis, unless you plan to teach a class on tinctures making in one hour. So I drove down to the local Booze 'R Us superstore and went the counter and said, "Quick, I need five gallons of your cheapest vodka!"
The clear turned to me and said, "It's nice to meet a man who knows what he likes."
(bah-dum!) -

Re: Booze
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 11:18 AMI am a drinker now and again. I also make cordials as gifts. I have an ultimate hair of the dog liquor I make with everclear and Espresso. It tastes great and will kill a hangover. I tend to keep everclear and Gordons vodka around for the manufacture. Both would be good choices. Sometimes I go to TJ and buy the cane alcohol they sell for pennies down there. It makes everclear look tasty, but works really well for tintures or for use in my multifuel camp stove. -

Re: Booze
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 1:14 PMIs that aquardiente? I was thinking about using that for tincture, but I thought the taste might be too overwhelming. I'm stewing some paw paw fruit in it now. I tried to strain it once throught cheese cloth, but it was too thick. Any ideas?

Re: Booze
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 3:54 PMI only drink on days that end in Y and in Parties of 1 or more!!!!!!
Just kidding, I drink once in a while, I like Capt. and coke or anything fruity with Vodka, and I love Hard Cider and prefer my beer to be dark or from a micro brew. I have not had the funds to invest in supplies as of late but soon will be starting to buy things again. I am able to shop at a military base so I plan on getting my booze and other supplies from there. At the PX they had the 450 field manuals of cd for $30.00 so I might pick that up.
So to sum up I enjoy a drink once in a while and plan to store the cheap stuff for trade and medicine making soon. -

Re: Booze
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 8:25 PMOh I completely forgot that in the Summer I like a few hard ciders instead of beer with the foods we cook over the campfires. Trying to get my hands on some Strongbow Hard cider from England (as a lifelong archer How could I not) -

Re: Booze
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 10:19 PMIn all seriousness, because of the diabetes my drinking is severely limited, but on hot summer day I like a Black and Tan. A Ren Faire friend turned me on to it. So I wait for the one time a year I can drink it.

Re: Booze
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 6:29 PMThought I'd mention that alcohol was probably used by primitive peoples as a method for preserving calories. Think stout beer. Damn I wish I could live off it! -

Re: Booze
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 10:05 AMWe brew our own mead. :) Must remember to stock up on honey, or learn how to keep bees. -

Re: Booze
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 11:56 PMas i have said, i don't drink alcohol at all...i am very irish and it doesn't do anything positive for me. my husband is half native american and it doesn't do anything positive for him either. but, that said, it does do positive thing for many people, especially beer, ales and wine. i would advise vegetarians especially to learn to brew their own beer. it has tons of b vitamins. i also advise older people to drink about 2-4 oz of wine a day and nursing mothers to drink a half a beer or so every day. when it is not abused, it is a gift to be used wisely. -

Re: Booze
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 1:02 PMI plan to learn to brew ale, and make wine and mead. Unfortunately I can't drink any of them without getting a migraine. For some reason once it's distilled I can. For the occasional drink, I'd pick vodka or rum. For everything else, I'd pick vodka, or everclear (which is not available in WA, sigh). Pretty much I use it for medicine - tinctures and such. I plan on getting the equipment to distill someday - so when SHTF I can make my own for medicine and trade. -

Thu, May 1, 2008 - 1:04 PMMay I suggest that invaluable book, The Bootleggers Bible.

Re: Booze
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 12:11 AMActually, unless the laws have changed quite recently, everclear is* available in Washington State; you just have to fill out some paperwork stating why you're buying it (to make tinctures is just fine) and if I recall correctly they track how much you buy a year and there is a limit, or an amount past which guys-in-suits-and-shades will want to chat with you.
Or, simply roll down to PDX and pick up a half a dozen bottles for about 20 per.
>:-P -

Re: Booze
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 2:29 PMThanks for the info, I'll have to check and see - would make it much easier when I get the space to start tincturing again.

Re: Booze
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 1:26 PMI don't drink anymore...I've had my problems with drugs and alcohol over the years....thankfully the last problems were over 14yrs in the past...I can see that alcohol could be a useful barter item though.....I'll stick to other things personally.

Re: Booze
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 5:49 PMJose Cuervo shots in the younger days - now I'd stash Patron Silver to sip or a good Irish whiskey like Black Bush -tasty and less damaging. I love the first drink of a cold beer on a hot day (real beer, not cheap horse-piss) and you can keep the rest of the bottle!
