Closing in on Turkey day

Our next big dinner is Thanksgiving. We have pumpkins and some onions left from the garden. The sweet basil is drying in the kitchen over the sink. The last of the zucchini and summer squash is in the fridge. We harvested lemons from our neighbors for marmalade, and the weather is still warm enough to keep the blackberries going.
Assuming we get a working oven by T. Day (that's another story) (how the heck did the Pilgrims do it without a Westinghouse?), we are having a small get together at our home. I'll be using everything left from our last harvest.

So...what are your plans? And how does you're garden play into it.
Also....do we have any wild turkey hunters out there???

I am an amateur when it comes to hunting, but wild turkeys are a complete adrenaline kick! I can't wait to get out there every spring & fall. So far this fall, I've seen 4 (out of range) while in my ground blind. I even saw a couple of bears my first day out. Ahhh, the spell the woodlands can put me under!

I have sugar pumkins for pumkin pie/bread, enough cherries in the freezer for another pie, string beans in the freezer, shredded zuchini in the freezer if we want more zuchini bread, tomatoes ripening in the basement, and all the fresh herbs needed for the turkey. Unfortunately, all of the other ingredients will have to be purchased. Last year, I was able to pay for the meal by dumping my coin jar into the coinstar thingy. Alas, this year the coin jar isn't as well fed...... :-(

Mmmmm..... pumpkin pie. Forgot to add that I'll be making my first p-pie ever this Turkey Day. Actually, I'll do a few practice pies beforehand to insure I get it right. I have plenty of small pumpkins left over (and 3 large ones), but I didn't label anything in my garden this year, so I don't know what kind they are.... Does it matter ?

        Michelle- pumpkin pie-

i learned that pumpkin pie - pumpkins are sweeter- they are small and round and lighter colored - that i know of.
jackolantern pumpkins arn't typically used for pie.

i also learned that butternut squash is a great substitute if you don't have pumpkin. its what they use mostly in canned pumpkin apparently.

Pumpkin pie is SUPER easy. I saw these directions online that were like 16 steps and it freaked me out. but i tried it anyway- and its really not hard at all.

oh- and roast the seeds. they are really popular. :)

Good luck! you can do it!

We are having our usual traditions.....a merger of creole, spanish and latin american food......We are contributing butternut squash raviolis, and stuffed mirlitons to a large family get together/pot luck, right in the bay area as a matter of fact. The butternuts and chayotes/mirlitons are going to be from our garden in SoCal. We will also be able to bring a couple of jars of dilly beans, and a bunch of our own dried figs for fig bread. Also, lots of fresh herbs to enhance whatever anyone else is cooking... I will even have some fresh lemon grass for my sister in law, who likes it for tea. Other pot luck contributions that I have heard from the Creole camp are gumbo and fried shrimp. If we do a turkey it will be deep fried, but I am hearing louder demands for a party size paella.

I've been making pumpkin pies from scratch for the first time. i am so hooked i've made 3 and will make 3 more.

I've been doing lots of pumpkin and squash recipe's lately.

we have lots of greens too.

I have some radishes - lots of them. so i might make a roasted radish and veggie dish.

I'll be going up to Kansas for the holiday and my family eats from the store and not much from the garden, so I'm excited to take a few things to them.

I also have cabbage and carrots right now and some other goodies to make kraut - so I should get crakin on that NOW so its ready in time. :)

OH- and Sweetpotatoes- I have LOADS of them!

Cool question, thanx Chuck- just made my plans! :)

There are wild turkeys in the Oakland/Berkeley hills. They have even come down and blocked Hwy 13. I don't know if it's legal to hunt them. Probably not.

They are also all over Marin County. A friend of mine who is a bus driver ran one down (accidently) and seriously considered a road kill Thanksgiving last year.
Occasionally they pop up here in Richmond at Wildcat Canyon Park. It is very tempting to string my wife's bow and try and get one. But I am a law abiding man....so for now they are safe from our oven.

Has anyone here deep fried one? And how did it taste?
