Blueberries

One of my fellas brought me an early Mother's Day present yesterday - two blueberry bushes and half-barrels to plant them in. I've got one Toro and one Berkeley, they're both covered in blooms. I am so looking forward to handfuls of fresh blueberries come July!

There was a neat kind of ever-bearing blueberry bush in a catalogue, and I really wanted to order some - I think they may start bearing immediately, but that may be wishful thinking - anyway, they won't deliver to California and a couple other places. Why? I've noticed that on other plants, too, like hollyhocks. Are they like ferrets or something, a threat to the ecosystem?

Yeah, what's up with that ?? I was looking in a beautiful fruit tree catalogue, and all through it..." cannot ship to CA, AZ...etc."
            Corporate protectionism ? Pests ?
I would LOVE to grow blueberries , yams, and a few other things, but cannot find starts nor shippers !

I was told to remove the berries the first year so the energy could go into the plant's growth by staff at two local nurserys. I got my first 5 this year - Bluecrop, Patriot, Chandler and 2-Sunshine Blue. They are going where I tore out the blackberries.

      FYI
Thought I would back up my statement with some information.
      At
      www.northwestgardenplants.com/blu...html
      They list under Pruning --
"Blueberries must become established before allowing them to bear fruit. Prune them heavily each year to avoid over production, which results in small fruit or poor growth.

Remove all blooms, as they appear the first year. In coming years follow these steps after the leaves have fallen."

Much more details on the site on how to grow blueberries.
This is a large local nursery called 'Johnson Brothers Greenhouses'.
They are in Coburg, just north of Eugene, Oregon.
Part of the Johnson family who has been here since the 1860's.

my blueberry bush has given me handfulls of breakfast fruit every year since I planted it - YUM! It bears profusely and has tons of unripe fruit on it NOW....can't wait! and neither can the robins!

the reason things can't ship to CA is that we have extremely strict agricultural laws regarding food crops and ornamentals, that supposedly protect the ag industry from unknown pathogens, or from spreading known pathogens. (yeah, right, like this bureaucracy has worked how well?) If you can't ship to your region, I'd suggest going to a local nursery since they have already worked through any red tape to provide stock for their nursery, and for you!
