We're thinking about buying a new computer, and since our PCs are riddled with viruses and whatnot, we'vce considered getting an Apple.

Pros? Cons? Anything I should know in particular?

I could have sworn that Kirk and Spock encountered this thing.

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/space/2006-07-27-biggest-blob_x.htm?csp=15

An enormous amoeba-like structure 200 million light-years wide and made up of galaxies and large bubbles of gas is the largest known object in the universe, scientists say.
The galaxies and gas bubbles, called Lyman alpha blobs, are aligned along three curvy filaments that formed about 2 billion years after the universe exploded into existence after the theoretical Big Bang. The filaments were recently seen using the Subaru and Keck telescopes on Mauna Kea.

The galaxies within the newly found structure are packed together four times closer than the universe's average.

Some of the gas bubbles are up to 400,000 light years across, nearly twice the diameter of our neighboring Andromeda Galaxy. Scientists think they formed when massive stars born early in the history of the universe exploded as supernovas and blew out their surrounding gases. Another theory is that the bubbles are giant gas cocoons that will one day give birth to new galaxies.

The finding will give researchers new insight into what the structure of cosmos looks like at the largest scale.

For the true hard-core, bad-ass, fine-structure haters

Way back when I was more ignorant than I am now, physics is the first thing that really "spoke" to me. I don't know what exactly it was but the idea of being able to describe something, anything, truly everything appealed to me on a gut level. Then came math and literature, and metaphysics.

Now it seems that the things are changing. The fine-structure constant, for example, may not be once what it was.

There is a dangerous virus being passed electronically, orally and by hand. This virus is called Worm-Overload-Recreational-Killer (WORK). If you receive WORK from any of your colleagues, your boss or Anyone else via any means DO NOT TOUCH IT. This virus will wipe out your private life completely. If you should come into contact with WORK put your jacket on and take two good friends to the nearest bar. Purchase the antidote known as Work-Isolator-Neutralization-Extractor (WINE) or Bothersome-Employer-Eliminator-Rebooter (BEER). Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

At the request of another tribe member, and because I had already been thinking about doing this, I deleted the thread with the long-ass title which That Mofo Fred posted. I did this not to remove offensive or objectionable material, and not because I don't like him, but because the title made a mess of the topic listing.

If you weren't present for the festivities, all you need to know is that it was quite a spectacle of geeky one-upmanship, done in binary and Morse code. I think I won.

A good one has passed on. John Kenneth Galbraith died this weekend. I was first introduced to him through his writing with the book A Tenured Professor. I was considering becoming a professor when I came across the book and it did nothing to dissuade me. The other two books of his I read was The Triumph (the NY Times article below mentions a few of the books) and The Economics of Innocent Fraud.

"He drew on his experiences in government to write three satirical novels. One in 1968, "The Triumph," a best seller, was an assault on the State Department's slapstick attempts to assist a mythical banana republic, Puerto Santos. In 1990, he took on the Harvard economics department with "A Tenured Professor," ridiculing, among others, a certain outspoken character who bore no small resemblance to himself."

JKG, in my opinion, was a true scholar and an extraordinary thinker. For the past few years I've been meaning to meet him. Sadly, I won't have the chance any longer.
John Kenneth Galbraith, 97, Dies; Economist Held a Mirror to Society

By HOLCOMB B. NOBLE and DOUGLAS MARTIN
Published: April 30, 2006

John Kenneth Galbraith, the iconoclastic economist, teacher and diplomat and an unapologetically liberal member of the political and academic establishment that he needled in prolific writings for more than half a century, died yesterday at a hospital in Cambridge, Mass. He was 97.

Mr. Galbraith and his wife, Catherine, in 1966 at the ambassador's home in New Delhi.
Mr. Galbraith lived in Cambridge and at an "unfarmed farm" near Newfane, Vt. His death was confirmed by his son J. Alan Galbraith.

Mr. Galbraith was one of the most widely read authors in the history of economics; among his 33 books was "The Affluent Society" (1958), one of those rare works that forces a nation to re-examine its values. He wrote fluidly, even on complex topics, and many of his compelling phrases — among them "the affluent society," "conventional wisdom" and "countervailing power" — became part of the language.

An imposing presence, lanky and angular at 6 feet 8 inches tall, Mr. Galbraith was consulted frequently by national leaders, and he gave advice freely, though it may have been ignored as often as it was taken. Mr. Galbraith clearly preferred taking issue with the conventional wisdom he distrusted.

He strived to change the very texture of the national conversation about power and its nature in the modern world by explaining how the planning of giant corporations superseded market mechanisms. His sweeping ideas, which might have gained even greater traction had he developed disciples willing and able to prove them with mathematical models, came to strike some as almost quaint in today's harsh, interconnected world where corporations devour one another.

Research: (S+C) x (B+F)/T = V

I need to start doing less theoretical work.

http://www.sundaytimes.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,7034,18752304%5E950,00.html

Have you got the definitive derriere?

09apr06
FEW women would claim to have the perfect bottom. But for those in need of reassurance that it is within reach, a scientist has come to the rescue by working out a mathematical formula they believe adds up to the perfect posterior.

The magical figures are (S+C) x (B+F)/T = V. Though the equation looks rather complicated, it is, according to the scientist, simple.

It assesses shape, bounce, firmness and symmetry – all factors that add up to the bottom line.

S is the overall shape or droopiness of the bottom, C represents how spherical the buttocks are, B measures muscular wobble or bounce, while F records the firmness.

V is the hip to waist ratio, or symmetry of the bottom, and T measures the skin texture and presence of cellulite.

David Holmes, a psychology lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, England, devised the formula.

He asked about 2000 women across Britain to assess their bottoms using a simple points scale.

For example, those who believed theirs resembled a trodden doughnut scored just one point for shape, whereas those with a small peach scored the maximum five.

Points were then entered into the formula and the closer a bottom scored to 80, the nearer it was to posterior perfection.

"The perfect female derriere has firmness to the touch and a resilience that prevents undue wobble or bounce, yet looks soft with flawless skin," Dr Holmes said.

"Slender thighs and a hip-to-waist ratio of 0.7 will frame the perfect bum, well perfectly."

Dr Holmes said that Kylie Minogue, whose celebrated bottom relaunched her career with the help of a pair of hotpants, would almost certainly score a perfect 80.

"Kylie would score amazingly well on sphericality and symmetry. Her bottom is pretty much perfect in these areas, more so than the likes of Charlotte Church or Jennifer Lopez, who have more curvy posteriors," he said.

"While no one, of course, can be sure of the firmness and texture of Kylie's bottom, from the exposure it has been given in the newspapers it is obviously muscular and is likely to score highly in these categories also."

Dr Holmes's research revealed that men and women had different opinions when it came to deciding on the best bottoms.

While women preferred the larger, curvier behind of Lopez, men found Minogue's pert symmetry more agreeable.

Did you know that you can play a DVD ripped to your drive directly using VLC?

Just open up the ripped movie folder and drop the VIDEO_TS folder on the VLC application.

Especially since everyone knows my goal in life is to be a badass, and that I proudly proclaim my geekiness to all who will listen. Particularly my students - a captive audience.

That Mofo Fred created a web-based jukebox. You can browse his music library and queue up tracks. You can listen to them with any streaming media player, such as iTunes or Windows Media. "So what," you say? Well, the music you queue up is simultaneously heard by EVERYONE who listens. It's just like a jukebox, hence the name "MofoBox Radio".

What a killer way to share music with people. Well done!

It looks like the whole alternative-language thing has turned sour for some, and doesn't really represent what I was after in creating this tribe. I'm as much a culprit as some others, so I'll refrain from alienating people with some weird languages anymore.

Let's just agree that it's extremely easy to translate one language (human, computer or otherwise) to another with a web-based translation tool, and stick to words that we can all understand, even if a dictionary is needed.

So, in the spirit of bad-assed geekiness, here's a question: What bad-ass thing have you done or said in the last week that has caused people around you to notice and admire how smart you are?

We're living in momentous times.

"An early Christian manuscript, including the only known text of what is known as the Gospel of Judas, has surfaced after 1,700 years. The text gives new insights into the relationship of Jesus and the disciple who betrayed him, scholars reported today.

"In this version, Jesus asked Judas, as a close friend, to sell him out to the authorities, which led to the Crucifixion. Though some theologians have hypothesized this, scholars who have studied the new-found text said, this is the first time an ancient document defends the idea."

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/06/science/06cnd-judas.html?hp&ex=1144382400&en=d58e9f87384d906d&ei=5094&partner=homepage

Strangely this account is similar to the story/essay of Borges, “Three Versions of Judas", which postulates that Judas may have been the true Messiah as he sacrificed his name and place in history as the one who betrayed Jesus.

I interviewed for a position at Princeton not so long ago and believe it or not, a huge factor in my decision to do so was the fact that Elaine Pagels was there. I'm a huge fan of hers (and her departed husband, physicist Heinz Pagels) and the thought of being in the same institution was very alluring.

I really get off on theology and physics!

"Matt Berg spent his first few postcollege years like any other geek: coding software under the glow of fluorescent lights. But today the 28-year-old rigs makeshift radio towers near the sands of Tombouctou. As a volunteer for U.S.-based Geekcorps, he's part of an IT-savvy army that's bringing technology infrastructure to developing nations around the world. "I have always been interested in how technology can make people's lives better," he says."

She's certainly a geek in the domain of food, decor, gardening and the like. I personally believe she's pretty bad-ass too. After all, she did her time with dignity and came out of it with nary a scratch and just as popular, if not more so, than ever.

The Geek Code

"So you think you are a geek, eh? The first step is to admit to yourself your geekiness. No matter what anyone says, geeks are people too; geeks have rights. So take a deep breath and announce to the world that you are a geek. Your courage will give you strength that will last you forever.

How to tell the world you are a geek, you ask? Use the Universal Geek Code! Using this special code will allow you to let other un-closeted geeks know who you are in a simple, codified statement.

The single best way to announce your geekhood is to add your geek code to your signature file or plan and announce it far and wide. But be careful, you may give other geeks the courage to come out of the closet. You might want to hang on to your copy of the code in order to help them along."
