Any thoughts on it? My Sun is progressed at 16 degrees Aries and my moon just progressed into Aries a few months ago meaning in about a year, I will have a progressed balsamic moon in Aries. I'm trying to get my head around what that means...

Hello all,

Man, we are a quiet tribe. Is it that there aren't many of us or is it that we are usually off doing our own thing?

Anyway, the Balsamic Moon for this cycle starts around 7 pm tonight (Central Time). Supposedly the Balsamic Moon prior to an eclipse is much more powerful than usual. Is anyone feeling any effects of this?

The Fountain and fulfillment (or just feelings of) destiny

Earlier this afternoon [ 'round midnight for all of you, I'd think ], I clicked on over to Apple's movie preview site and watched the one for Darren Aronofsky's "The Fountain." I sat here, giddily slack-jawed, and as I described the trailer to my Lady Friend later , she laughed and said that it sounded exactly like the perfect film for me: "Past lives, space, Tree of Life..."

http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/thefountain/trailer1/

And while I certainly think that there's an obvious appeal to most people in such a story (and such visuals! good night!), I thought about what she said and how there is an association with/inclination toward fulfilling a destiny [or sensing a destiny/a space or time or circumstance as yet unseen] among Balsamic Moon natives.

Personally, I've sought to go to Africa (Mali, specifically) for the better part of the last six years. Had scheduled to go with Afropop Worldwide in 2000, but that fell through at the boarding gate with some unexpected visa problem. Went to teach at in int'l school in Qatar in 2004 (where I looked forward to saving money and being in closer proximity to NW Africa than Seattle was)... but ended up making a midnight run to Amsterdam and then Seatown two months later, after things became shady and exploitative.

Headed to Egypt to meet my Lady Friend last summer. We tried to make inroads at teaching there (and enjoyed the time we had; http://nmazca.com/cairo/), but the best money is in East Asia... Which meant that after we were eventually hired in Korea in February (after three frustrated months in Taiwan [that decision made and contracts signed toward the beginning of MercRet*]), we weren't able to take time off to see the total eclipse in Egypt in March (a part of my years-long desire to go to the continent).

Still, it's what I continue to anticipate doing, either next winter or spring, or the year after (2008 being the Year of the Rat, my astro-animal). When asked what I will do (since I often mention staying for several months or even years), I can only say "I want to learn about traditional methods for healing and making medicine; agriculture, culture and rituals..." My father had told me many years ago (before he died in '98) that our family is descended from the Fula tribe, a nomadic people whose territory overlaps areas in Niger, Burkina Faso and perhaps SE Mali (and who seem to have been slaves to the Mandinke, as asserted in the fable "Gassire's Lute").

Mentioning Mali again, I heard music by the recently deceased Ali Farka Toure for the first time in 1998 (just weeks after my father died) and it felt like I was almost able to sing along, the music sounded so familiar. And then there's the Dogon in their cliff dwellings, with their knowledge-bearing antelope-deity totems, serpent-anointed priests, and otherworldly cosmology... and I just believe that there's a homecoming or a access point for a higher function of being to be had in that region.

Can you see what I mean about the sense of what is there beyond seeing, an as yet refined plan or action that compels over time? This what being a Balsamic native seems to be about ... or what it feels like to live through and aspire.

a balsamic cancer moon has been clearing the way for the new moon in leo. what have we been impelled to lay to rest this time? and how effectively have we done so?
i feel like i did pretty well: paid long overdue visits to both my semi-invalid mom and my old astro-guru; paid my mortgage and utility bills; and laid aside a temptation to undertake a risky money making venture. I feel pretty clear, and relatively broke, and I'm beginning to look forward to a new moon after midnight that will almost exactly oppose my natal moon . . . perhaps it will provide me with an inspiring reflection to moivate me towards fulfilling my emotional needs(?). Or is it still a few hours too soon to begin meditating on such things? I'm not at all sure what my emotional needs even are. Maybe i'd better spend the day clearing some of the material rubble out of my house.

Moon phases and Solar return...

I was looking for more info on the Balsamic moon and started thinking about where it would be in a solar return chart and how that would affect the upcoming year. (yeah, I know, I think too much sometimes..lol).

For this solar return for me, my Sun is at 9 degrees Pisces and the Moon was not quite a New Moon at 8 Pisces 57. Would that still be considered balsamic?

From what I have read, the Balsamic phase is about getting rid of everything that doesn't serve you in preperation for the New. I would say that is probably the MAJOR theme for this year for me. I just thought it was interesting.

Sidereal astrology

I think that there's still a Tribe about this... In any case, the basic overview is that sidereal astrology is based upon the actual position of the Sun, Moon and other planets against the zodiac. The positions and date associations used in Western astrology don't account for precession of the equinoxes (the Sun's backward motion across the zodiac as seen over time, due to the spin+wobble of the Earth's axis; http://www.astro.com/astrology/in_praezession_e.htm).

Vedic and other Asian astro systems are sidereally based. Generally, the Western signs can be regarded as being a month off. The current solar transits of the constellations are:

Aries: April 19 to May 13
Taurus: May 14 to June 19
Gemini: June 20 to July 20
Cancer: July 21 to August 9
Leo: August 10 to September 15
Virgo: September 16 to October 30
Libra: October 31 to November 22
Scorpius: November 23 to November 29
Ophiuchus: November 30 to December 17
Sagittarius: December 18 to January 18
Capricorn: January 19 to February 15
Aquarius: February 16 to March 11
Pisces: March 12 to April 18

And if you're looking at and thinking "Ophiuchus?" (the Sky Whale), well, the Sun does pass through that rather large constellation above Sag and Sco, thus making 13 major constellations (which is cool actually, since there are actually 13 lunar cycles in a solar year). But that's a whole other thing.

Let's look at it like this. In the Western Year 0, the Sun rose on the Vernal Equinox on March 21, and this was in the zodiac region of Aries. Because of precession, 77 years later, the Sun rose on the Equinox on March 21, but it didn't rise in Aries until March 22. In the Year 154, the Sun rose in Aries on March 23, and so on and on...

So by the time I was born on April 12, 1972, the Sun was high in the sky in Pisces, and it didn't enter Aries until the 17th or 18th. Currently, the Sun enters Aries on the 19th of April. And in all of this, I'm talking about the actual positions in space as seen from Earth, not projections on a chart. I'd noticed this when I looked at a planetarium view of the sky on my birthday and was really puzzled about how I was supposed to have been born under Aries, but the Sun was obviously in the Pisces constellation.

For more on sidereal astrology, please visit:

http://www.lunarplanner.com/siderealastrology.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidereal_astrology

And if you're open to reinterpreting the fundamentals of your chart, pay close attention to where your ascendant shows up in the sidereal system. As it's stated in many resources [my preferred text is "The Art of Chart Interpretation" by Tracy Marks], the ASC is the filter or lens through which so much of your persona and being comes forth.

Does that marker on a sidereal chart, in particular, resonate with you? Astro.com can show you a sidereal plot, in its Extended Chart selection section.

Balsamic Moon and manifesting

I read the link that talked about the Balsamic Moon being the true "Wishing Moon" instead of what people consider to be held by the New Moon. Usually I will put some sort of manifest or wish out there on the New Moon, but last month I did so during the Balsamic phase. For me the results were almost immediate although I need to refine what I ask for. I wonder if Balsamic folks have more luck during the Balsamic phase than others do.

I was also looking in some Wiccan and Green Witch books last weekend and found no mention of the Balsamic Moon.

To begin, let's talk about the end.

I have been an informal (but sometimes intense) student of astrology for the last few years. My main interest has been to gather information and develop skills in synthesis about in regard to my own natal makeup -- did I mention that I have the Sun and Moon in Aries?

It was about two years ago when I first read the term "balsamic moon." My first thought was, "What does a balsam plant have to do with the waning phase of the Moon?"

http://www.nmazca.com/skychurch/31may.jpg

I soon found out that the association relates to the uses of balms and ointments (some made from varieties of balsam) to purify and cleanse places of worship and religious practitioners. The balsamic phase is fundamentally connected to spiritual development and discernment -- to the exclusion of all us, some might say.

Here is an excerpt from Moses Siregar III in his article on natives of the Balsamic and Waning Gibbous Moons:
http://www.astrologyforthesoul.com/balsmc3qmons.html

"The balsamic is about endings. Finishing karma. Leaving behind the seeds of one's self for others. Yes, it's often depressing until you cross over to a certain shore. The more we can cross over to the other shore, then the more life feels like a free ride, because you could say that the Higher Self is now in control. But we must learn the lesson of letting go. If a balsamic moon person is looking outside of themselves for happiness, security or peace, then that balsamic person can expect a hearty serving of suffering. There is no permanence for a balsamic moon until they realize deep down in their souls that there is no permanence in this world. Then there may be more stability. To live a successful life as a balsamic moon, you've got to be a little idealistic.

"The purpose of the last two (of eight) lunar phases is to prepare for death, like the last fourth of a life. The intention is (1) fundamentally spiritual, not material, and (2) to leave behind the seeds of one's life for others. When someone is born under these phases, their life takes on these qualities, but the balsamic is stronger than the third quarter in both of these respects. If worth is measured by what produces spiritual awakening, then these phases are gold. It's like the 6/8/12 houses as they are understood in Vedic astrology. They're extremely difficult at times, but spiritually they are probably the most powerful houses for creating transformation.

"Since the intention of these phases are spiritual, these phases are largely about the transformation of the ego, and so they are somewhat inimical to the normal flow of (material) life. However, if one is prepared to burn up one's karma in the fire of life, and set aside one's karma through selfless service, then these lunar phases can become the most enlightened. By giving up the false addictions of this world, dedicating oneself to awakening, and making oneself available to the Universe, these phases can become the most wonderful of all. But that's a Herculean task. Luckily, we've all got a little Hercules inside...

"I was born during the balsamic moon, as are almost the majority of the best friends I've had in my life (it can be said that balsamic people only truly relate to other balsamic people), and there is a definite purging that you can see in all of us. But these are people who are also undergoing a major metamorphosis into a more enlightened consciousness. A balsamic person who holds onto lower values and habits is indeed going to go through incredibly challenging life experiences."

For a little more:

The basic premise of the phase as the end of the lunar cycle:
