lots of fun stuff coming up! Come drum!

Tonight- I'm dancing at Zeeba Lounge 10-midnight and lots of folks are coming out- come join the party!
Sunday June 1- the All Seasons Hafla- Emrys and Andy are drumming, but I am also expecting Atef Hassan and Hany to show up- should be fun- come join in! www.allseasonshafla.com
June 20, 21, 22- an SCA event in Baltimore! Drumming and dancing around the fire is requested!
Here's what I posted at the meetup:
There will be an SCA Kingdom Archery Championship event this wekend out at Baltimore Bowmen on Harford Rd. The organizers hope that dancers and other entertainers will come enliven the campfires at night. Feel free to ask Nina more about this event. More traditional costumes are worn, rather than modern belly dance costumes. Like cholis and Ghawazee coats, Turkish vests, etc. It should be really fun, and there's camping if you want to.
SCA flyer for details!

I personally, Nina Amaya, would LOVE to have you out Friday or Saturday night, but I understand that the big show, MiaNaja's Moments of Magic, is Saturday night and many of you would be there. But some of you would rather dance around a fire!
If you are interested in coming out either night, but are bemused by the SCA, or aren't sure what to wear, etc., please give me a call.
443-834-3191
They have fabulous food and camraderie. Bring a set of dishes: plate, cup, fork, etc.
Cost:
Adult, Member: $ 12.00 Day-Trip $ 6.00 Feast $ 0.00 Camping
Adult, Non-Member: $ 15.00 Day-Trip $ 6.00 Feast $ 0.00 Camping
Child (6-17): $ 4.00 Day-Trip $ 6.00 Feast $ 0.00 Camping
Child (0-5): $ 0.00 Day-Trip $ 0.00 Feast $ 0.00 Camping
Site: Baltimore Bowmen ( baltimorebowmen.com), 10301 Harford Road, Glen Arm, MD 21057. Directions available on their website and the basics are repeated below. Site opens at 5pm Friday and closes at noon on Sunday. Period and modern camping. There is a unisex bathroom with two showers, two outdoor showers and portable toilets. Parking will be marked "Yak Parking' and is head-in only; we appreciate your cooperation.

Looking for a replacement drummer

I received an email from Vernon "Rhythm Genie" of California yesterday. He is unable to attend the BOCA fest and is looking for a replacement drum instructor for the weekend.

Here are the details if anyone is interested.

Hi Chandani,

...someone on the East Coast* who'd be interested & available to teach some Middle Eastern drumming for the BOCAFest event this weekend? I've had to cancel because of a serious medical condition that precludes me from flying for awhile ~ I'm grounded!

Any contacts would be greatly appreciated. It's a paid gig featuring Morocco, Tarik, and quite a few others. Info online here:
http://www. bellydancersofcolor. com/

Thanks for any info you can provide.

~Vern

*Actually, they don't have to be on, or from the East Coast, but that's probably preferred as far as costs & logistics ;-)
We need a replacement right away.

Here is the contact info:

Then please pass on these links & e-mail addresses.
http://www. bellydancersofcolor. com/

my workshop:

I don't have a phone number as of yet, maybe by sometime tomorrow a.m.

Thank you most kindly!

Lyra of Kallisti Tribal is happy to announce a 5 week mini-mester class for both Improv Tribal I and Improv Tribal II!

Saturday, March 29th- Saturday, April 26th 2008

Improv Tribal I- 11am- 12pm
Improv Tribal II- 12pm- 1pm

$15/class drop-in, $60/all five weeks

Aura Movement

-------------------------------------------------------

Improv Tribal Belly Dance is a series of moves that are woven together through hand and verbal cues. In this sense, it becomes a universal dance form wherein anyone who learns the moves and their cues can dance together in an improvisational lead and follow fashion. It's a very liberating, proud and joyful dance form that celebrates women in all of their shapes, sizes, colors and emphasizes spontaneity, interaction and a fusion of both individual and group dynamics. Class will focus on American Tribal Style moves as well as other fusion and tribal choreographies that draw from various forms of dance, including Cabaret, African, Indian, Middle Eastern and Greek. Note: This is not an ATS only class. Improv Tribal Bellydance mixes ATS movements with various Improv Tribal Combos not created by Carolena Nericcio and Fatchance Bellydance.

Level I: 11am-12pm This class is suited for beginners and those with previous improv tribal dance experience who are still focusing on perfecting the core movements of Improv Tribal Bellydance. This class will refresh basics for those with previous experience and teach those with little or no experience the posture, formations and movements that comprise improv tribal bellydance. This is a progressive class which will focus on solidifying the fundamentals of improv tribal bellydance. By the end of this course, students will have a firm grasp of basic improv tribal bellydance movements and will be introduced to the formations used in leading/following. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please come in form fitting clothes that ensure easy movement and comfort.

Level II: 12pm- 1pm This class is focused towards students with 1+ years of Improv Tribal Bellydance experience who are completely comfortable with leading and following the basic movements introduced in Improv Tribal I. This class will focus on incorporating more traveling movements and turns, as well as touching on music interpretation and soloing. Studentes may only register for this class with the approval of Lyra (that's me!) to ensure that they have fully grasped all level I movements.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please come in form fitting clothes that ensure easy movement and comfort. NO COIN SCARVES OR DISTRACTING ACCESSORIES ALLOWED. Please be kind and respect the right of your fellow students to learn in non-distracting environment. Shawls and hip wraps are fine, as long as I can still easily see your muscles/hip movements.

Online registration will be available shortly via www.kallistitribal.com or you can pay for the full session at the first class. Please email me at lyra AT kallistitribal DOT com to reserve your space, as well as to ask any questions about level placement. Classes will be limited to 15 Students max, to ensure proper attention is given to each student. NOTE: this class is not featured in the "First Class Free" promotion offered by Aura Movement.

Hope to see you in class!
As Sidqi says, "Souhail is the ultimate dancer's drummer. His drum solos are some of the best I've ever heard. That's why he has been in demand at Mendocino Middle Eastern Music & Dance Camp as both a teacher and performer for so many years!"

This is your chance to study with him here without buying a plane ticket!

SoulFire Props, a community finding its way HOME.

Greetings!

The DC local SoulFire crew has developed a most harmonious relationship with each other surrounding the concepts of intentional music making, sacred space defining and transmutational shamanic healing, thru esctatic dance, art, rhythm and community. The ease and the grace with which we set our events up and take them down is truly a blessing in my life. This is mostly true cuz it is clear that there is effort and attention to detail by all of us, and that means that there is sustainability in this model. The content that shows up, with invitation is amazing. The Potlucks are more and more delicious, and the take downs are being done in under an hour! There are children, adults, "tweens", teens, folks from a plethora of different paths, and joy in the eyes of all.

i wanted to send a shout out to this collective of drum and dance folks to announce that we have found a local site for Sacred SoulFire! YEAHHHHHH.

For the past 3 years we have been doing SoulFire Inside at Seekers Church in DC, developing the experience and intentional community based values of a sacred fire circle. We have wafted around looking for the right place for us to develop a longterm home for our outdoor Fire Circle work and play. While we have been told we "should" go to the same place and "should" be at the same time of year, we have not been able to deliver on that. In principle we agree with the suggestions, but previously we have not found the right spot for us that will enable and support our longterm growth and viability, as one of the many styles of fire circle magic available to those who seek it for themselves.

A few months ago, i sent out some requests to friends in the Frederick area, looking for sites for Sacred SoulFire. I got a couple interesting leads, but it took me a minute to follow thru on them. Recently Bellavia, Leah and myself took a ride up to Hawkwood Farm, and as soon as we arrived on the land, we all felt how things were beginning to fall into alignment. By the time we rode around on the land (it was cold and wet that day) and were sipping on a beverage in the farmhouse, with Erin (the guardian of the land) it was very clear to each of us, that it is well worth running the experiment of Sacred SoulFire at Hawkwood Farm, this summer.

There are so many synchronicities, they are too many to reflect here, but the 2 biggest are the name similarity of our home in the Southeast (Hawkwind Earth Renewal, Alabama) and the fact that Hawkwood is in HARMONY, MD.

It is our hope that Hawkwood Farm will provide the stability we desire. Yet we know that we have to follow our hearts, with no attachment to the outcome. Whatever happens, we have entered into this communal experiment, by accepting Hawkwood Farm invitation for us to come there. Clearly, Hawkwood Farm is supporting the sacred all night fire circle movement and appears to becoming a sanctuary for surburban and urban folks like me. This land calls out to us to bring our music, motion and mojo to work with the spirits of the place, the nature, community, self, other with a focus of helping to bring more light to the world. It is a place that will welcome you with open hands and encouragement for who you are.

Details on presenters, cost and offerings to come soon, but here is what i know now.
Sacred SoulFire-Maryland
Dates: Thursday July 3rd to Sunday July 6th, (Core Collaborator Days are Weds and Monday)
CONTENT: 5 Elemental Groups (teaching & sharing circles) that will focus on deepening our relationship with self, other, spirit & the Fire Circle Itself. Community Ritual, Community Art Projects, Gratitude Tree, Ceremonial Tattoo work with SMS, All Night Fires & more.
FOOD: We will have an AMAZING Meal Plan headed up by Darriel Park (just ask anyone who was at SSF-WV how the food was)
CHILDREN: Child Centered Programing will be instigated by Tammy (Darriel's wife)
LAND DETAILS: 91 acres to find the perfect spot for camping, woods and open fields, a pond to swim and fish in, a barn to have an inside circle if we get rain, or have a movie night in. Several Fire Circles already developed, an hour from Baltimore, and hour and a half from DC, with plenty of parking.
COST: as low as we can make it.

Hawkwood Farm is home to Erin Aylor, an amazing artist and kind person. He has welcomed us with open arms and an open heart, and all involved feel a resonance of sustainability and growth. With our (Owen and myself) plans to develop a space in Baltimore, and Erin's plans to develop his land for events like SoulFire, it seems that the universe is presenting us with an opportunity to work with the Urban/Rural model of collaboration.

FUTURE NEWS:
Long Term Event Horizons include the possiblity that we will begin Full Moon Drum and Dance events, with the colder months being at our space in Baltimore and the warmer months being at Hawkwood Farm. Time will tell us, and as soon as we have a plan for that phase, we will let you all know.

Here is a link for Erin's myspace page so you can see some images of the farm and his art.
profile.myspace.com/index.cfm

We hope you will join us, especially if you are a local to DC/Baltimore on July 4th weekend.
With that said, we all know it is difficult to schedule without conflicting other fire circle dates. My "polling of peeps" reflected that 99% of us felt that this is a good weekend for Sacred SoulFire, as the content of our work is so different from each of the other events (we know of) being offered on that weekend. We recognize the good work that each crew of folks delivers, Earth Drum Council (AHO) and 4QF (Drum and Splash). We trust the process of the interconnected, diverse Fire Circle community members being able to choose the event that most supports their personal preference of Fire Circle style.

If we do not see each other at SSF-Maryland, may the spirits weave our paths together at some other juicy event, and very soon!
Brightest of Blessings!!!

Peace Matters,
Mz. imani

Magic at drum time.

I wrote this in an other thread and decided that it was just going to highjack the thread so I thought to start this instead.

I am sure most all of you who come here have been in a few drum circle or just found a great place to jam on your own where something more seemed to insert itself into the moment. Something emotional or entangable, that feeling that doesn't alway have the worlds to discribe it or a photo that could show it, but it was real none the less. I speak of the time where when the drums quite themselves and you find that fuzzy feeling hasn't quit left the room yet. Some times the drums seem to evoke something that isn't so much of this world but something far greater. I have had a few moments like this and like to share it with you.

BIRDS use to have a drum circle once a month every month for a year at a church on 27th street and Charles. The same place where we had the Rhythm Festival each year. It was a wonderful place to play because it was a large abandoned church with high vaulted ceilings and the sound would resonate of the wood of the church's bare ceilings. When the circle would really get rolling and the sounds were synching up to a feverous pitch there was something magical that would happen. Not the magical as being the new age hand holding or the mystical fantasy magic, but a real everyone can hear it and look at each other an talk about the "What the hell was that" kind of magic. What happens is that during that wonderful jams where everyone would get in synch, a sound would appear out of the blue. A very high nondescript sound that would be just out of one discernible perception. With out getting hokey or religious (anyone who knows me knows that isn't me) but it would sound almost like a children’s choir was practicing in an other part of the church. But we would be the only ones there. I would be banging away at my skins and this sould would filter through the background and pull be away from me "Astral Thang". (Thats what I call the zen meditative space out I get when I am drumming) I would hear this beautiful sound filling it the background of rhythm and add an almost melotic quality to the room. I would look across the circle and notice that there were one or two other drumers look up and around as if they were straining their ears to hear the same thing I was tring to pull out of the air. When we stopped it stopped. I even recall on several occasions where other people pointing out the sound and asking if there where other groups in the building. It is one of those strange things that would give me chills for I am a bit disenchanted when it comes to the world of ghosts and sprits. Now I am not sure if it was just the sounds bouncing off of the wood ceilings but I hope it was more than that, being that the ceiling has been dry walled since the last time I heard the sound. But it will forever be an amazing experience that I will always think back to and wonder.

I hoped you liked my little blog which I do plan on copying to my profile but if anyone else has anything to share I would love to read about it.

Anyone live in Baltimore and want to drum?

Hey guys

I am looking for someone/s to get together and do some music with. I play djembe, bongos, Native American Flute, and a couple other instruments. I am a casual player. I record sometimes but more than anything I just like to jam. If you want to get together and do some music, or want to dance to some let me know. I am looking to try to start something local from the ground up - like possibly get people who live in Baltimore to assemble semi-regularly and get some festivities going - dancing, drumming, singing, whatever.

Now i have been working so much, accumulating money and a drum is something that is worth the money. i have heard of them on ebay for a good deal but i really would rather play it before.. i would spend maybe $150 at the most.
thank you brothers and sitsers

BIRDS 2008--Please Read, then Drum!!!

Respects...
You might see this letter cross-posted all over the place. I wish to reach the widest community possible and your understanding is appreciated. Should you know someone who might benefit from this information, please pass it along.

I apologize that it has been a while since I last wrote. This past BIRDS festival was a smashing success. Thanks to everyone who participated in making it a most memorable event.

There are some fantastic pictures posted on-line for all to see. These pictures are from the two evening concerts and have been provided by Eric Willison, President of the Mill Valley Cultural Arts Umbrella (www.millvalleyarts.org); click on the BIRDS link under the Latest News banner. We will be posting many of these on the BIRDS’ site shortly. If anyone took pictures during the Saturday street fair, we are looking for new photos for the website. You will receive proper photo credit and a link to your web page, should you have one and wish a link.

On to other matters, John Millen has informed me that he wishes to step down as president of the board, after many years of dedicated service to the festival. I congratulate John on his extensive commitment and dedication to the community. He has expressed his desire to continue serving on the board in a sort of emeritus capacity. Institutional memory is vital to the success of any organization.

So where does this leave BIRDS? Well, to put on a festival that can reach a maximum potential public requires people who can work together to create the event. We need people who have fundraising & grant writing experience. Additionally, we need people who have skills in promotion & marketing…audio, photo & video production… programming & logistics... community education, etc. We are looking for imagination, innovation and creative problem solving.

This is a tall task!!! However, it cannot be done successfully by just a few people. This is especially true when taking into account that everyone has a life outside BIRDS: i.e. work, school, family and other obligations. BIRDS is a community-based organization that needs a strong community behind it.

Now, to next topic: the BIRDS’ Board. I am announcing that there are six to ten openings for new board members. We are looking for people who want to be community builders and who wish to influence the future direction of the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival. The board needs people who can do all those items I addressed above, plus bookkeeping and general office assistance.

There are no limits to the possibilities that can be accomplished if we work together. That said, it is important for everyone to realize that for BIRDS to move forward we need people to step up and take on these various tasks.

The beauty of this is that no one will be asked to do anything outside their expertise. If we can get enough folks to become involved, then no one will have to work too hard and much more will get accomplished. It is truly up to the community to decide the direction of the organization. It should never reflect just one point of view, but many.

Well, there you have it. I am challenging everyone to get involved. It’s now up to all of us to make this wonderful organization achieve its fullest potential.

Aleichem Shalom…
Be not frozen by fear, but embrace and be warmed by the peaceful crackling of the fire of the moment. Changing, changing constantly. We are here to live and life is full of growth. We know that we must never get stuck in the idea of knowing, but dance always and in all ways, to keep on growing.
I am honored to be here, helping in the process of healing, and harmonizing. May humanity live up to its potential and experience the divinity within acknowledging that we are as holy as any Idol, Icon or Image. To recognize that we are part of the Whole, and to respect compassionately.

TEDDY KURTAS

Yogi, homme d'affaires, healer, lover, teacher, student, poet, singer, friend, dancer, magician, neighbor, traveler, voice, body, explorer, mind, emotions, punky, Ted. Hmmmm!!!! Who am I? A question with no answer; for once there is a definition, how can growth and change be possible? Let's not misunderstand, for we need not seek change it is occurring. Just as a seed does not question that it be an oak and flowers, we too are flowering!! I am grateful for all of the teachers that have graced me with their presence (whether recognized or not) and am indebted to the gentle lessons (oh they really are) that life has offered along this journey. To all my relations, I am honored. Aho! Hare Om!

I am inspired by the beat of the spirit and I have found that movement is a wonderful means of expressing my being, especially when other modes have not been as comfortable in surfacing I offer my essence, my entire breathe and being towards this body-prayer, this moving meditation, this yoga of a different form: for the health, happiness and bliss of all sentient beings; for the healing of all my relations; for the exaltation of all my blessings; for comforting those in need; for my self-actualization; for the pure bliss of those I love; to the Highest of the High. I am consumed.

Together we build the Sacred Fire by offering intentions of change, expressions of gratitude or prayers for healing as we light candles in a central cauldron. We circle the fire, drumming and dancing our dreams into reality. Our circle is influenced by the principles of the all-night fire circle, as we play with myth, transformation, rhythm, chant, art and movement. We collaborate in free form ways to invite the muse, and planetary healing, to move thru us and invoke a sense of communal joy.

SoulFire Inside illuminates our crazy wisdom and serves as a bridge between our ancestral knowledge, ourselves and the ones yet to be. Join us, as we collectively navigate this path of service by sharing inspirations and expressions of harmony, hope, play and art.

ALisa Starkweather to teach in Maryland, Jan 20, 2008

To All the Women in and around DC....

Our sister ALisa Starkweather is coming to Maryland and is offering a day long retreat. I highly encourage you to spend the day with ALisa, and the other potent sisters who will come together to weave a transformative and triumphant time. One thing i know about working with ALisa, is that i get fed on levels that i did not even know i was hungry.

This photo was taken at New England Women's Herbal Conference, by Kendal Craig. I was so hungry, and Mama Lion ALisa went out hunting to take care of me....

I know i am gonna be there, and i hope to see you in circle, with ALisa.

Blessings Abound,
Mz. imani

Huntresses for the Life-Giving LIFE

Sunday, January 20, 2008
Phenomenal Women Gather for Soulful Sustenance
9:30am ~ 4pm
Gaia Healing Center in Frederick, MD
Facilitated with ALisa Starkweather

“Women are hungry for the mysteries. We are hunting for our authentic selves, our power nourished by the roots of the Sacred Deep Feminine, and connection with life, a life lived with meaning.”
~ ALisa Starkweather

What will happen?

We always like to ask that of the unknown I've noticed.

And yet this is the part of the story where our inner huntress on her search for what is life-giving yields to her instinctual knowing and trusts that she herself, her desires and intentions are part of the organic weaving of this special day among us women. This is what makes the moment so spectacular. We don't ever know but by showing up, we find out what collectively is going on with us now.

rWhat I think might happen.

We will gather, hopefully twenty or more of us. We will travel to four sacred places.

1. What feeds our passion, our fire, our hungers? Raising of Our Energy

2. What large energies do we need to confront to move any stuck energies in us? Reclaiming Our Power in places we’ve given it away

3. Expansion into our healing, our connectedness, our bliss, our visions, our bodies, our love. Conscious Directed Breathwork Session

4. Being witnessed in community and sharing soulfood. Women’s Council

dHere is what I can tell you for sure. e

I am rarely in Maryland except to facilitate Women in Power Initiation so it is rather a unique opportunity. If you can please share news with your friends down there as word of mouth is essential in such a short time frame.

I am here for a day and I am lowering prices way down so that it can be available to many.
For over 23 years I passionately engage with women around our empowerment, leadership, and transformational breakthroughs.

I have spent my life seeking for these gifts, all of which I will bring to our time full heartedly.
They are~

Ritual and storytelling and time connected to sisterhood and the earth ®
Inspiration in large doses
A safe and invigorating sacred container
Shadow Work® skills
Transformational Breathwork®
A plethora of skill based tools
Archetypal and metaphorical language
Chant and drum
A good deal of laughter mixed with every other emotion you can imagine Y
The gift of continuing to build community among women
Diving deep into the wild sea of us
Usually at least one life changing experience ~

I'm psyched about going to the Rhythm Festival for the first time and wondering if anyone else is going?

Not sure which Djembe to bring.... I've got 2 beautiful wood/goatskin and a 14" Remo Rope tuned. I'm thinking the Remo is best for traveling cause its indestructable and lightweight although it sounds like a plastic drum(what it is). I'll be checking it as luggage....any tips besides wrapping in bubble wrap?

Any tips or thoughts about traveling with a djembe are appreciated? Anyone else going?

Hello All!

Below is the updated info for Improv Tribal Bellydance I/II. I've changed the class to a mixed level I/II class. This is done to ensure that we have a larger class to practice our chorus/solo formations, as well as to give a refresher to students who have studied with previous teachers.

If you have any questions, please contact me via the email below.

Have a safe, prosperous and happy new year!

-----------------------

Level I/II: 11am-12pm

This class will be a mixed level I/II class suited for beginners and
those with previous improv tribal dance experience. This class will
refresh basics for those with previous experience and teach those with
little or no experience the posture, formations and movements that
comprise improv tribal bellydance.

Type(s) of Doumbeks: Is There A Preference?

I was dabbling on the Mid-East.com site and I saw the following kinds of doumbeks offered:

Doumbek, Fiberglass
Doumbek, Aluminum
Doumbek, Brass
Doumbek, Ceramic
Doumbek, Copper
Doumbek, Metal
Doumbek, Mother of Pearl
Doumbek, Egyptian Wooden
Doumbek, Rosewood

As far as getting the best ''bang for your buck'' in reference to the sounds and striking surface of a particular doumbek, which one best serves its purpose? Feedback welcomed...

That interesting neighbor would be me.
Mz. imani.

if you got any leads, please send them to me off list.
we want to be in a neighborhood that is not to blown out.
currently our favorite area seems to be Highlandtown.
given that owen now works at School of Medicine (UMD), we are definately moving.

if you know of a space that can accommodate the following needs or desires:
2 large studio spaces, preferably connected
living space for at least 3
drive in access (perfect scenario is garage off studio)
community space for drumming and dancing, classes, performances, etc
sunlight.
we are looking at shells and we are looking at buildings that are ready to go.

if a place peeks your interest, send it along:
appreciate you keeping an eye out for me.

Wow- that was fun. We had 2 viloinists: Samira and Daphne, Julian on clarinet, Andy and Tom on dumbek, Shems alternating between frame drum and zils (with a little conducting and dancing), me and a little girl on riq, occasional children wandering through on anything, Jessica picking up zils for the first time... it was great! We can use more of everything! We played Zeina and Hadouni Hadouni, Fire Dance and Rompi Rompi..... and I think we'll do it next Sunday. We had tea and cookies and pizza and apples, too.... I know this is a 'drum circle' tribe but wouldn't y'all like to play songs on those drums, too? Zeina is just a beledi with a middle section of fast ayoub; Jessica who had never played an instrument before kept to the doums, while our melody instruments read sheet music. Fun. Come join us- we need another tabla, as Tom is just learning, and playing very quietly....

Next Sunday- 3 or 4 o'clock sound good?

Hi Folks,
We recently released our debut album. It's a mix of electronic and ethnic/arabian styles, some downtempo, and some eastern european influences also. Just thinking it might be of interest to the folks in this tribe who like this kind of material and vibe. Especially if you like the RealWorld, AfroCelts stuff, etc.

Hi all! Rashid Aladeen will be running the drum circle. The dancer schedule is here:
www.allseasonshafla.com
It starts at 330pm, and I hope some drummers can come. The show is $20, but $12 of that is for the delicoious food, and $8 is the door fee which I can knock off if the $20 is just too dang much money. After the drum circle comes 2 hours of dancing and eating- enjoy!

A Call for Vounteers

Putting a call out for folks for volunteer to help during the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival, this coming Friday and Saturday, September 28 & 29.

Thursday evening, I need help decorating the main stage, inside St John’s – Clark Room.

For Friday, we need help with selling tickets and security. We might, also need help selling bottled water and other beverages.

Saturday, will also need people to sell tickets and handle basic security tasks. In addition, we will need people to help with the outdoor festival stage, assisting groups with transitioning on and off stage, supporting the MC & Host of the Street Festival stage, Stu Needel etc. Further, the World Rhythm Drum Circus will be set-up and in full swing. This is a veritable percussionist’s playground that is completely kids safe: percussion instruments from all over the world and several junk yards. We will need fellow drummers to help supervise this wonderful activity.

There you have it. This call for help covers much of what we need to make this event really work as smoothly as possible. That said, there is only one thing that I can think of that we need more than anything else, and that is for you to attend and bring all of your friends with you. With out the community, the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival would be nothing more than a nice idea, waiting for someone to show up.

Make a difference and contribute to BIRDS future. You can make a tax-deductible contribution to the Baltimore International Rhythm & Drumming Society on-line at: www.drumtogether.net or during the festival. Your financial support will help BIRDS be able to create unique drumming and educational opportunities for youth and adults. It truly does take a village.

Shalom…

drum circle at the hafla

Hi all,
I have taken over the old 5 Seasons hafla, and moved it to a clean and delicious restaurant, the Spice Cafe, in Towson. It is now called the All Seasons Hafla.
The first show, on October 7, has got a live band, so I wasn't doing the regular drum circle thing necessarily, but we could. There is actually a music class that day too- class with Melissa Murphey, whom you might know as the Clarinet Chick from Pennsic, FolkTours, Darbukistan.... she is teaching how toplay in an ensemble. More info at http://bellydance.meetup.com/284/calendar/6322707/

In November, I think we should have a drum circle. Anyone interested? Andy, or Rashid Aladeen, by stage name, will lead it, and it will be using middle eastern rhythms.
Anyone with any suggestions for me, please share them- I'm newly in charge and am looking for any ideas you have about the hafla, or how to get more live music into it!

Drummers will probably have to pay for the buffet, which is splendiferous compared to the old 5 Seasons fare- it's Indian Food and $12. It's $20 to get in, and out of my part I pay for flyers, the feature dancer and all the work I put in (which is soooooo much, turns out- herding cats, sigh). But if any musicians want to come, I'm not charging them the door fee, obviously. Performers don't pay, but the restaurant says they do pay to eat, and I think to have it there, everyone has to get the buffet- for now! Wait til they see how good it is for business, then they will let me get away w/more.
Anyway- let me know! nina@cavtel.net

Greetings Fellow Drummies and Dancers!

Looking forward to connecting more with the Baltimore Crew at BIRDS. (i will be moving to the area in the next 6 months or so, so i am gonna need some help figuring my way around).

Daveed asked me to step up and help to re-activate and support the BIRDS Festival. I am looking forward to sharing with you what we have cooked up. Our hopes are to continue to try to network and meet regularly across the winter months to merge the past, present and future, into a healthy and successful festival that supports traditional and progressive rhythmic forms long after we are all old and barely able to drum and dance anymore.

We want to encourage local business owners and rhythm and dance teachers to place an add in the BIRDS Program. The rates are very reasonable and are what pay for the program to be printed.

It's official, Raquy and the Cavemen are coming to Baltimore to perform Saturday, September 29th during the 11th Baltimore International Rhythm Festival. In addition, Raquy, Freek Factory (New York-NuFunk underground, bass & drums), Mahiri Fadjimba Keïta and friends, Shodekeh ( Beatboxing), & Mz Imani and the Rhythm Shamans, the concert line-up is shaping up to be one for the books.

As a very special treat, Baltimore native, Lisa Zahiya (Baraka Mundi/Asheville NC---the bandit queens of bellydance) will be offering a tribal belly dance workshop.

Lisa is only the tip of the iceberg. More exciting news is still to come.
BIRDS Fest 2007 is just around the corner

The drumming magic is back in Baltimore and the celebrate, the 11th edition of the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival is just around the corner. There are a few open slots left for performances on the outdoor stage. If anyone is interested, just give me a shout.

As for the main acts, BIRDS is proud to announce Mahiri Fadjimba Keïta and friends, Shodekeh ( Beatboxing), Freek Factory (Nu-Funk New York underground, bass and drums), & Mz Imani and the Rhythm Shamans. This is just a partial listing of the various rhythm weavers that will be performing. More names will be announced as details become available.

Now's the time to start making plans to join the Baltimore International Rhythm and Drumming Society (BIRDS) in this annual celebration of world rhythmical traditions. Keep checking back for further updates and take a look at our website:www.drumtogether.net, for more details and schedules.

If anyone knows of any folks who might wish to take part in the festival marketplace, please refer them to the website. A vendor's pack is downloadable as a .pdf file. It only costs $65 to reserve a space. A great value that can potentially reach several thousand people.

The magic is only starting. There is so much more to come!!!

X Post- ATS Hangouts

Have some Fatchance DVDs, but you can't commit to practicing? How's about we all get together for some ATS hangouts?

I wanted to test the waters to see if there's enough interest to start up a group for ATS Hangouts. Here's the low-down. We get a group of people together, rent a space, bi-weekly to start, and watch Fatchance DVDs to brush up on and learn new ATS moves. All levels are welcome, as we would be learning from DVDs, so it would be great for beginners and good freshening up for more advanced dancers.

Meetings would be structured as follows:

30 min for warm-up and drills
1 hr for DVD learning
15min-1/2 hour for dancing together and practicing moves
cool down

Note: this would NOT be Kallisti or any other tribal ATS/Improv troupes involved teaching the moves. We would be following Fatchance's DVDs (and maybe BlackSheep's if we felt like it) to the letter, no changes or modifications on moves (you can take them home and mess with them as you see fit, but we're trying to keep it pure ATS for this group's purposes).

Cost would be the price of the rental space for two hours split between participants. We're hoping to keep it to $10 each, if we have enough interested parties. I'm looking to start this up in a about a month or so down the line, as it will take a while to secure space and whatnot.

Interested? Get back to me missbeezers AT gmail DOT com and let me know which weeknights work for you and weekend times.

Hope to see you there!

Celebrate First Fridays in Hampden this month with Local musicians such as Sahffi and the Moving Sound at Charlotte Elliott. Friday, July 6th, 5 - 9 p.m. Hampden will celebrate summer with live music and entertainment, refreshments and lots of great late shopping.

Sahffi is an all original artist based out of Baltimore . Her style is a spontaneous blend of rock, jazz, folk, and blues, stemming from her early love of classical music.

A graduate of Peabody Conservatory of Music, Sahffi has been a music therapist, music teacher and lead vocalist for cover bands. However, through her entire musical career Sahffi had a driving need to write intensely inspired songs and lyrics. She finally gave in and became a solo artist in 2001.

Her performances have been praised as “inspiring”, “magical” and “bewitching”. Paul Iwancio, President of the Baltimore Songwriters Association said, “Sahffi is a talented, melodious trapeze artist. Her powerful voice propels her across the stage… we in the audience are mesmerized by (her) wonder.”
Charlotte Elliott has a grand selection of antiques and vintage clothing, great furniture and delightful home decorations. Charlotte Hays Murray, owner of Charlotte Elliott, has been awarded Hampden’s covetted title, Merchant of the Year, 2007 and continues to strive to bring only the best to the thriving neighborhood of Hampden, Baltimore . It is always Happening in Hampden.

BIRDS Update and Meeting Reminder

Greetings!!!
Let's start with things to report: we just received word from the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts that we received a 2007 Baltimore Arts & Humanities Grant for $1000. With what we have in the bank, that puts us half way to meeting our budgetary goals for this year's festival. So "YEAH!!!" us.

Next, with 112 days until Festival there are some important areas that we need help in. We need a marketplace/vendor coordinator and a kid's activities coordinator. One other area that I would like to find help is finding someone to coordinate a membership program. Membership has its privileges, meaning that we can create perks that can include lower ticket prices for Festival concert tickets or being able to attend workshop for free, for example. Another benefit, all or part of the membership can also be tax deductible, I think. (Rory: Is that correct?)

One of my goals is to find sufficient money so that some of the Festival artists will be able to do a school gig on Thursday or Fri, 9/27 & 28. Boy's Latin is looking for someone to come out for a half or a whole day.

My new gig at Port Discovery is fantastic. That said, I has some deadlines to meet and did not find us a place for our next meeting, scheduled for this coming Wednesday There is a new Panera's near the Inner Harbor on Lombard just west of President, across from the Power Plant. That might be a good place to do. It's simple to get to from 83 or 95. Does anyone else have any recommendations. I could be wrong, but I thought that last meeting it was fairly split from where everyone had to travel from. Imani probably drove the longest, from Gaithersburg. Then again, Tanith came with Imani, but started out in Fairfax first. I am open to anyplace. It would be great if we could draw more folks, so I am happy to drive anywhere. Suggestions???

There will be a second meeting this month on Wednesday, June 27th. I would like to have it somewhere close to St John's. It is my hope to have folks from both St John's and Red Emma's to join us so that we can get into the nitty gritty of plotting out the logistics for the event. Any and all questions are invited and welcome.

In closing, I want to take this opportunity to express my respects to all of those folks who have, thus far, become involved in this planning process. BIRDS is a community-based organization. It's all about building and fostering relationships. The sweetest drumming experiences that I have ever experienced

Polynesian or Hawaiian Dancers, Fire Spinners, needed

I am looking for some dancers for a private summer pool party with a luau theme. Please contact me if you or your troupe might be interested in performing -- please also let me know what your standard fee rate is if you contact me.

I am also interested in talking to fire spinners -- if you do both that's fantastic.

Live music fitting a luau theme is also a possibility if you can recommend some performers.

The event will be July 20th.

Thank you!

hello all you lovely drummers I am starting up a Bi-monthly hafla in my house right in the heart of Adams Morgan. Alot of my belly dancing friends are interested and we have plenty of cool pieces to experiment with but there is nothing like a live drum circle!
Soooo... it's going to be held every other Sunday from 7-11. I will make sure to keep you guys posted on when the first one will begin. Come with what ever level drum player you are this hafla is for practice, and trying out new and different ideas in an constructive chill environment.

ok so let me know if this is something that you guys are interested in and hopefully we can get this thing of the ground!
thanks!!!!
