My birthday and Tamra-Henna

So, I just wanted to say that I was planning on having a birthday/graduation party on May 3rd in Vancouver. (My birthday is actually April 29th). Then I realized that Tamra-Henna, who I hear is awesome, is comming that weekend. So, I propose that the troupe comes to Vancouver for the workshop and my birthday. Venus is still looking for dancers I think. We'd have to ask.
I was going to have a dinner party at Sam's but I dunno what to do now. I'm still working it out but it'll be fun. If anyone wants to come up and stay at my place, you're more than welcome. I only really have a futon and floor space so if you're not picky, come stay with me. Its possible that we could still do Sam's and the show since they're within walking distance from one another.

Finger Cymbals are not only a favorite accompaniment for bellydance, but also an excellent learning/practice tool for your timing, rhythm and musical instincts. the etymology of Tariq

I was procrastinating the other day and intrigued by our conversation on the meaning of the name Tariq. When I first started looking I found definitions such as; the 'night visitor', or 'evening caller'. Secondly I started finding the definition 'morning star' a lot. This confused me and had me think of Venus so I kept looking. There are 6 other variants of the name; Tarek, Tareq, Tarick,Tarik, and Tarique. They should all be the same.Tariq Ibn Ziyad was the Islamic military leader that helped conquer Spain for the Moors. The rock of Gibraltar was named for him it means Mtn. of Tariq.
Anyway 'Al-Tariq' is the title of the 86th surah of the Quran. The most literal translation I could find was ' A night visitant which is a knocking star' It seems most people have taken their meanings from various transalations of the 86th surah instead of from the meaning of the word taraqa: knocking.
I liked the definition that converts knocking to pulsating. Etymology is a hobby of mine, I hope you found some interest in this post.

Thank you Saskia for hosting such a wonderful farewell (sob, sob) gathering on Friday! There are so many things I would like to have said to everyone there, but I just couldn't get the words out. Thank you to everyone for welcoming me so warmly into your community. It really has been a wonderful 3 years & I'm dreading leaving you all behind :( I know I will see you from time to time & I cherish the memories I have of you. AWWWW crap, the contacts are fogging up...guess I'll just leave it at that. See you all at rehearsal tonight. I'm not even going to attempt to promise that I won't shed a tear or two.

Tribal Fest 7 - ROCKED!

I'm back from Tribal Fest - and still trying to process all that happened! I had a fantastic time and 'Rocked' the packed house while I performed!
It felt great being up there and dancing for all these fabulous people I admire so much! (an experience in itself!) Heather and Courage showed us a fabulous time - thank you thank you thank you!!!!
We met so many wonderful people (one of them being Tori!) and saw so so many great performances! SOOZ had the best hair ... and Unmata shouted the loudest!!!
Indigo charmed everyone and Urban Tribal finished us all off - breathtaking poses!!

I'm still running everything through my head and trying to make understandable sentences - tell you all about it soon!

I just wanted to say thanks again to Shahrahzad for hosting me this past weekend in Kamloops for 2 days of "love, sweat & cheers"! I had such a great time with all of you, and was thoroughly impressed with all of your efforts!! The show was great - I loved getting the chance to see what you lovely ladies are doing and I thought you all put on a great show! - thanks again to Shahrahzad for putting it all on!

Sun. Apr.15/07 - "Tribal Duets & Slinky Sets" workshop (the 2nd workshop in my series this spring):

12 - 3:30pm @ Scotia Dance Ctr. - 677 Davie St.

This workshop will look at learning to dance in 2's and developing a connection. We will focus on both moves for lead & follow tribal, and tribal fusion - borrowing flavors from Indian style & Hip Hop style (cool, smooth moves), covering both styles - something for everyone. Intro to "energy practice and development" for ultimate presentation. Drilling specific moves & seqences with one or two combos, for each style. Smooth is the word & Slinky enough to make you say "oooh - aaaah"!
Workshop includes conditioning warm up, drills, and much practice in moves and presentation. Good for any level, or any style of bellydance.

Bring yoga mat, if you have one & lots of water!

New Years Resolutions!

New Years Resolutions – 2007

I’ve decided to make some resolutions for the New Year. I have some personal ones ~ working out more often, eating better, walking my dog more, all the regulars...

I also have some dance related ones. This is the list:

• Finish costumes (Gold, Blue and Turquoise/Silver).
• Make at least 1 new quality costume (bra and skirt) that is not troupe.
• Compete at least once.
• Hit at the very least 3 weekend workshops.
• Work on a solo.
• Improve skillz.
• Push to form 2 separate troupes ~ competitive and recreational.

I’m going to add to it as I think of new things, but I thought aside from writing it down, I would post it… it’s a proven fact that when you say things out loud, or let others know your plans, you are more likely to carry them through.

We set a few troupe plans for the year on Sunday as well… I’d like to actually sit down as a group and form a solid list of resolutions… if it’s possible. :)

Big News Followup. :)

Wow... tribe... haven't been here in a while. ;)

I thought I should post a few pics of the wedding and give a little update, so here goes.

I posted some wedding pics in my personal photo album if you want to go have a look.

We had a beautiful day, everything went smoothly and we didn’t have any of the hangups we had envisioned…

Our professional pictures taken out in the cold, it had snowed the day before and was clear on the Saturday, which made for a beautiful backdrop (so what if I’m missing a few toes due to frost bite.) ;) I can’t post any of those right now, but will later on.

My Dad was very proud, he stayed as long as he could before his energy died down and he had to head home, but he made it through the dinner and the important parts of the dance. :)

Speaking of dinner ~ we decided to have a ‘potluck’ style dinner where people from different families contributed different things, we had salads from one side of the family, cabbage rolls that we had made, scalloped potatoes from the other side of the family, lasagna’s from our parents, etc… and everything turned out SO good.

All in all, we had a good day filled with family and friends and good times. :)

Big News!

Ok, so... I have some BIG news.

Dave and I (and my sister and her fiance) have decided that ~ due largely to my Dad's quickly diminishing state of health ~ we are going to have a double ceremony wedding, and it will take place November 25. (Yes, it was in the back of my mind to have it the weekend after the Suhaila workshop so that I didn't miss any weekend practices! :P)

That means that I am getting married in 7 weeks. :| 7 weeks! I have no idea where to start!

That also means that I am not going to register for the Morocco workshop ~ I don't have any money saved for the wedding and... I'm going to need that cash... :S Also means with having 3 families there, we can't invite very many friends at all... we're going to see what the total is at for family, and divy up the rest of the spaces left for friends...

I'm still just totally overwhelmed. I don't even have a dress. I cut one out of a catalog once. My little sister was going to make it, but... she says she can't do it in that amount of time now. EEEEP!

Anyways, so, that's my big news. I'm getting married! In 7 weeks!

I hear that everything is working out with the double crown stuff. Too bad about the costumes though. I just wanted to say hi and that I miss everyone. Shareef is editing me a song that I'm going to do a choreography to. I'm super excited about it. I'll send it to you guys when its done.

I'm going to ramble here... :P

I understand that there was both a lot of negative and positive feedback about this performance, and I have to say I was really impressed with her response (below).

I think she brings up some very valid points about how every bellydancer in every style of bellydance is *taking* from a very old culture and trying to represent it in within the framework of their own environment… and more often than not we don’t always know the significance of our movements, or the jewelry we are wearing, or the markings on our bodies…

Her other point that really struck me was her commentary on our communities ‘ability to constructively critique one another’.

Not constructive, “This is weird, therefore it sucks.”
Constructive, “Kaya, Sadie, perhaps a night club would be better than a family venue for such a performance.” ;)

I know, I know, but hey, everyone has their opinions. :P This was one of my favourite parts of her response, “This is not to say that constructive criticism or honest dislike does not have its place in our community. It is to say that the truest nature of our dance, the connection with the divine feminine, is being neglected and is requiring a conscious move toward balance between its anima and animus.”

Everyone will always have opinions, and that’s ok, but that how we treat each other ~ how we utilize those opinions, and more importantly, what we encompass and what we represent as dancers in this form need to take more focus.

I like that. :)

Summer Dancing

Hey Everyone,

Last night we were chatting for a bit about dancing through summer, and adult ballet came up ~ I'd really like to take some ballet ~ for the strength, flexibility, control, conditioning, etc.

Sinead mentioned she'd be interested in it... would anyone else be interested in a short semester of ballet during the summer (if Bonnie could swing it in her schedule...)?

Also... if not (or even if we do), do we know if we're going to continue the bellydance classes (not troupe practices) through the summer?

Bad news...

On Friday afternoon before I came to the party at Kath's my sister called me around 3pm ~ she was really upset, wouldn’t tell me what was going on, and just asked me to leave work and come over there right away. When I got there she told me that my Dad had his CAT scan results back and they weren’t good. My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, they found that it had spread to his lymph nodes which make it inoperable, and at this point the Dr’s have called it terminal.

They (my sister and her man) had left with Taylor to go see him at the lake that afternoon (the party was a great distraction ~ I wasn't doing so well hanging out at home by myself ~ the mojitos and wine served their purpose well ;))

While at the lake, we decided that we needed to be back there for Fathers Day weekend (the 17th - 18th), which is the only Saturday this month I am supposed to dance at the restaurant... I won't be able to make it on the 24th for sure (Akimbo year end show), but the 10th I could probably do it on. I'm at the Relay for Life that day, supposed to be there all day, but I am pretty sure that I would be able to sneak out for a few hours to dance and have a break from it all.

Bon, Kath, are either of you scheduled for the 10th and would you mind switching with me on the 17th? If not, can I get Katies contact info from one of you? I couldn't dance all of May and feel bad being unavailable for most of June already, I really do want to dance there!

This sucks ~ I'm not really sure how to deal with all of this... :(

Morocco's last weeklong in NY

I'm thinking that I will go to NY for Morroco's weeklong Aug. 5-11. I realize that I should probably be at a higher level to get more out of something like this but I decided that I'm only going to be good if I try to do everything. Ok well maybe not everything. I really wanted to go to NY anyway. I think it would be awesome. If anyone would like to come with me, airfare is only about $525 with taxes and everything and the workshop is $400 US.
I've heard that Morocco is amazing and if this is her last weeklong ever then I want to be there. I would like someone to come with me:) Bonnie? Kathryn? Corrie? Sinead? come on I know you wanna. :)

workouts @ instinct!!

Hey guys...

i talked to jenna and she is fine with us doing a workout class in the shop, but at least for the next month and a half until school is out it doesn't look good on thursdays... Jenna has fighting practice that night and can't be there, and since I have class until 6:20 and the bus works so that I can't be down town until ~7:15...meaning there would be no noe to unlock the shop.
if we can find a different temporary time or hold off until school is done though, then everything is ok!!

You guys have to tell me what you think. Most of it didn't really work for me but they tried and that's what makes it cool. A lot of what they do seems like stuff I would do if I were trying to be a total goof in class.

Conditioning class

Sorry it's taken me so long to get this out to you! The following days/times are when I'm available to teach a class.
Mondays 3:30-6:30 pm or after 8:30 pm (keep in mind I work on Tuesdays at 6:30 am!),
Tuesdays after 3:30 pm,
Wednesdays during the day until 4:30 pm or after 8:30 pm,
Thursdays during the day until our dance class
Most Fridays after 12:30 pm
Most Saturdays after 2:30 pm
Don't want to add anything else to my Sundays!
Let's see if we can find a time that works for most people, then we'll see if we can find a place to do it!
