Dangit!
Apparently, my surgeon has gone from a three day liquid fast to 10! 10 days! I start my protein shakes next Tuesday.
Something about shrinking the liver.
He wants me to use Optifast HP, but it won't get here in time. I'm off to the vitamin Shoppe to see what they have that would compare.

Re: My surgeon went and changed the rules mid game.
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 10:39 PMTen days is pretty standard. The three day liquid fast is a trial to see how you will do with the pre-op ten day fast. Its tough, but well worth it in the long run. Just don't cheat though, because people who have cheated have had a nasty surprise--one woman said she had done liquids only but hadn't. When they opened her up for surgery it was obvious she had cheated, so they couldn't proceed. They closed her up and then she had to heal from that before she could do the ten day fast for real and actually have the surgery after all. That would be a MAJOR bummer and just isn't worth cheating. -

Re: My surgeon went and changed the rules mid game.
Fri, June 8, 2007 - 8:34 AMThanks for the warning! I can do this. I am determined to follow my doctor's instructions to the letter so that I have as easy a recovery as possible. Also, I want to have the full benefits, you know? -

Re: My surgeon went and changed the rules mid game.
Fri, June 8, 2007 - 12:43 PMYep - 10 days is what they say I'll need to do. They recommend Boost or Ensure for that period, so maybe that's an option for now - see what your doc says.
Sounds like you're getting close - good for you!! -

Re: My surgeon went and changed the rules mid game.
Fri, June 8, 2007 - 5:33 PMMy doctor didn't make me do this, although one of the women I work with did. -

Re: My surgeon went and changed the rules mid game.
Tue, June 12, 2007 - 11:46 AMThank you So much! I'm on the liquids. I mixed the stuff with milk this morning, and BLEAH! It was NASTY! So I'll try mixing it with water at noon.
Saturday will not be an easy day. There's a potluck at my house that I can't stop from happening. -

Re: My surgeon went and changed the rules mid game.
Wed, June 13, 2007 - 10:30 AMYou're on your way - well done!
A thought on the potluck. Could you get out of the house at that time? In any case, I'd wager if you explain what's up and talk about how excited you are about getting your surgery (keep it in a positive light), people will be supportive and they might just boost your confidence and resolve. Keep that end prize in sight!
... and I'll admit I'm jealous that you're so close to getting there. Congrats!

Re: My surgeon went and changed the rules mid game.
Thu, June 28, 2007 - 12:04 PMI'm guessing you are well past this point but wow! 10 days????
My surgeon only had one day of liquids but he wanted me to lose 10lbs before surgery. That is going to be tough because that will be almost three weeks on liquids total...mine had two days of clear liquids (liquids you could see through) followed by two weeks of liquids (anything you can suck through a straw) after surgery...then on to mushy foods for two weeks.
The pre-op diet is to shrink the liver because they have to move it to get the band through. In obese people, the liver tends to be bigger and more inflammed so they try to detox you to shrink it . -

Re: My surgeon went and changed the rules mid game.
Fri, June 29, 2007 - 8:22 AMYep - I'lll have to do liquids for 10 days too. I'm also TRYING to get myself in the right mindset and lose a few pounds before surgery (they say even 5 is nice - anything is better than nothing).
Ideally, I'd love to lose a few before my final 3 preapproval appts on the 12th. Since I'll be with family on the 4th and everyone's on some kind of dietary restriction (brother doesn't eat "mammals", sis is gluten-free, dad is diabetic and low salt/fat, mom is dieting), I can probably do something! and yes, holiday meals are bizarre these days (especially when you add in 2 nieces that are lactose intolerant).
So, what's the update? Has surgery happened and how are you doing so far? -

Re: My surgeon went and changed the rules mid game.
Sat, June 30, 2007 - 7:08 AMThen here is a fabu 4th of july desert.....
A friend just made this so *I* could celebrate *HER* birthday. How crazy>
A bag of frozen berries. I think it had black berries ; raspberries, strawberries. She added some REALLY ripe peaches. A big box of jello sugar free raspberry gelatin (Sorry not for your vegeterian brother) She used just enough warm water to dissolve, and then used a "sparkling " water infused w/ berry flavor (sugar free)
Let that set, layered fat free cool whip, and decorated w/ red cake mate tube frosting.
Almost no fat, the only sugar was the berries and perhaps the most delicious thing I've eaten since the surgery.... -
