We have had many Apprentice Scholars this year play for their Scholar's prize here at our faire. While a Bankeside Scholar playing involves performing a routine in front of the school, A Bankeside Free Scholar (being the next step above) is much different.
Free Scholar prize playing is a full hour of our "A Tiempo' fighting to whomever comes to challenge the prize player. In The Bankeside Schoole of Defense, "A Tiempo" (meaning 'in time') is an exercise done at quarter speed to show technique and proper defense as opposed to any type of competition.

It is my honor to announce that Bankeside Scholar Charles Dane (aka : Captain Sir Richard Grenville) will be playing his Free Scholar prize this coming Saturday, May 3rd to be conducted at the Maypole Common Stage. He has trained with Bankeside these past four years and now is ready to take that next step. Mr. Dane will be playing at the following weapons :

• The Rapier Single
• The Rapier and Dagger
• The Rapier and Buckler
• The Longsword
• The Quarterstaff

This Bill of Challenge therefore is to invite those who have practiced martial aspect of the sword to challenge Mr Dane between the hour of 1:00pm to 2:00pm at that location providing the following rules are agreed to :

• Both the Provost of Bankeside and the potential Free Scholar must agree to the match. The 'matches' will be no longer than three minutes.
• "A Tiempo" is an exercise done at quarter speed. This is so that it remains an exercise as opposed to a competition. The intent of the exercise to observe and learn through experience, not to win.
• Point work or thrusting to the face is not done during these sessions for safety purposes.
• All weapons unknown to the player or judges will be inspected for proper use. Sharps or very pointed weapons will not be allowed to use on the field. Proper replacements will be on hand if a weapon is found to be unsuitable for the exercise.

These intentions will be overseen by the Provost and other Free Scholars within the Bankeside Schoole of Defense. Those who are
qualified to answer this Bill of Challenge are invited to answer to the above overseers for permission to answer. Any exceptions shall be directed to these officers no later than the hour noon of Saturday 3rd of May.

Please direct any questions related to this event to myself

Now that my surgery is over and the process of cancer treatment beginning, I have a few points I'd like to throw in for good measure. All of you know how passionate I am about fencing, even to attempt to practice in my ICU hospital bed. At the same time, many points stressed in the pass only became clear in the last week or so. My perspectives have changed as my out looks on life.
I still may be the crazy Asian, but not insane. So here it is....Year after year we pursue an art that we all love and practice with fanatical passion. The thought of a carrot dangling makes it even more fun and challenging, in the end what matters is not how many prizes we've claimed, or opponent we've defeated, it's how much knowledge we have learned and obtained. How much of what we know becomes us and how we, as individuals have made use of it.
My time away from Bankeside, is a time for reflection and continue studies of the masters. So for EACH and everyone I wish you God speed on your studies. Remember there is NO END. (The road stretches forever). It is your job to work and study hard to become proficient and pass everything on to the next generation. Patience is a virtue.

Begging the moderator's indulgence, I wanted to tell you guys about my carrying bag for rapier/long weapon fencers. I've been fencing rapier, and other weapons for years--It's the bag I wished I'd been able to get all along, and since no one was making it, I went ahead and had it manufactured. It's a "triangle" style shoulder bag that's biog enough and strong enough to carry rapiers and just about as much equipment as you could want to throw in. It;s over FIVE FEET long, and can be adjusted for shorter weapons (the top of the bag had a velcro closure in case you really need to pack something evel longer--a spear, a quando, maybe your favorite broom), the back is padded, the bottom is reinforced, there are roomy outside pockets big enough for a wet fencing jacket... I think it's really a cool poduct at a good price, and I'm trying to reach more rapier fencers. Come check it out:
