...is that it's over entirely too soon!!! I miss my peeps already!

Onca, TribO rocked my face off!!!

The classes and teachers were so informative and amazing.
The split between the live music show and the Sat. show was awesome!
Loved the accomadations, the roomies, the setting. Camp Tekoa forever!!!!
Rick and Reyna kicked it like never before! Registration was so smooth!!!!
Lisa Wylie had the show running so smoothly!
and Props to the sound guys Scarecrow and Hawker, for juggling cords, lights and mics.
Vending was fabulous.
Oso. Dear, sweet Oso. My goodness man, it's one thing to feed the people, another thing to feed the people delicious, healthy food, but another thing entirely to do it with love. The love, man, that's what makes the food!

Vote TribO for best event. I swear it will not be a lie.
Ha-yessss-ha!!!!!!

OCTOBER SUPER SATURDAYS @ THE OASIS w/ THE MEZMER SOCIETY ~ 10/3 & 10/4!

North Carolina's The Mezmer Society makes their Southern California debut at The Oasis! Join us for a weekend of "Lush Cabaret & Balkan Ruckus" including (but not limited to) belly dance, cabaret performance, Romany music, foppish occultism, & more!

Saturday, October 3 Workshops:

"Feisty Fanwork & Combinations"* ~ Special 3-hour workshop!
Noon - 3:00pm :: $45 for this class or $120 for ALL 4 pre-reg/$50 at door

A class inspired in equal parts by Flamenco, the fine art of flirtation, and every performer's need to capture the audience. Onça's Fan Fusion is long on musicality, emotive power, attitude and upper body strength. Savor the flavor of passion as we explore the potential of every artist's indispensable tool; the Fan. This class offers sassy combinations that can be used by artists of every genre to captivate and communicate. *Most fans will work: feather fans and fan veils will be discussed, but are not usable for the purposes of class. Onça's preferred fans will be for sale at this class, or bring your own.

"Sing, Gadje, Sing"*
3:30 - 4:30pm :: $15 for this class or $120 for ALL 4 pre-reg/$20 at door

This class is for everyone - dancers, musicians and laypersons who want to participate in making the party Happen. Come as you are to learn melodies and harmonies to several Balkan tunes that we will later sing together in the evening showcase! *No prior experience with reading, or singing music, required.

Sunday, October 4 Workshops:

"Swordwork: Swanky, Sultry & Silly"*
Noon - 2:00pm :: $35 for this class or $120 for ALL 4 pre-reg/$40 at door

Sword is one of Onça's favorites. The synergy of a shining sword and a skilled artist is incredibly powerful. Yet, making the most of the power of the blade requires attention, respect, and a strong sense of narrative. In addition to dynamic combinations for soloists and ensembles, learn a bit about sustainable technique, history, and the care & feeding of swords. This workshop is open to all levels and suitable for artists of all genres. *Students must bring their own sword.

"Cane Dancing: Foxy or Folkloric?"*
2:30 - 4:30pm :: $35 for this class or $120 for ALL 4 pre-reg/$40 at door

It's all how you handle the big stick. Cane, or 'Raks Assaya', is a traditional woman's dance art that offers tremendous creative expression to bellydance artists. Building on our universal vocabulary of movements, we will drill sustainable cane technique and explore versatile combos with attitude. Add spice to your style of Cabaret or Fusion with 'Raks Vaudevillia'! Great for developing both troupe precision and the theatrical face of our dance! *Some canes will be available for purchase at this class, or bring your own.

The Mezmer Society
Desdemona
Strawberry Butterfly

Hi,
I remember some photos of Baraka Mundi with these beautiful leather halter bras. Does anyone know the artist's name / contact information? I am working on a concept piece with a warrior woman theme to it, and a brown leather halter bra would be perfect!
Thanks!

New bellydance classes start April 22

New Class starts in Asheville on April 22
April 22- May 27 (6 week series)
$10 drop in or $50 for the entire 6 weeks....a bargain!!

An all-levels, drills, isolation and conditioning class. So many of us dancers know that we should practice at home but we just don't know where to start. That is where this class comes in. In it, I will guide you through all the basic, must-know movements and drill them till it burns, also we will work on individual muscle areas, learning to isolate one area at a time. In addition to that, I will lead you in some conditioning exercises (I hate that word) geared towards areas of the body that, as a bellydancer, need to be strong and healthy. Along the way I will share some tips and tricks that will help you in performance such as stage presence, facial expressions, posture and so on.

70 College Street, behind Enter-Surprises boutique by the bright mural
up the cute little stairs

Durga Tour Workshop with Tempest, Wednesday May 6th.

Wednesday, May 6th--Tempest

Columbia is proud to be a stop on Tempest's Durga Tour! This workshop will take place in the place of our normal basics class at 711 E. Main St. in Lexington, in the CDE studios in the basement of the old mill. Cash or check at the door, or pay ahead of time via paypal to natalie_c_brown at yahoo dot com.

Tempest started her exploration of dance in early 2000 on the East Coast. She quickly found belly dance to be incredibly rewarding not only physically, but spiritually and emotionally, as well as a source of inspiration for her visual art.

Although she enjoys what tradition has to offer, Tempest loves exploring the dance through unusual music and creative costuming, pulling on her visual arts background to "paint a picture" with the dance. By working (playing) outside of the box, Tempest engages the audience through dramatic embodied storytelling , passionate expression, and sensuous, mezmerizing movement. She particularly enjoys performing Raks Gothique, also known as Gothic Belly Dance, and sacred-fusion forms of belly dance.

Strange Presence – 7:30-9:30 PM, $30

It’s all about bleeding your soul out to audience, serving it to them on a platter, and then eating THEM for lunch instead. A truly successful performance does more than show how well you can do the moves—it should really speak to your audience and exude expression. You CAN learn how to have a stronger personality on stage and channel that energy for a more dynamic performance. Discover the key aspects of capturing your audience with your stage presence and develop your own onstage drama! We’ll particularly focus on improvisational technique, character development, and learning to be more “in the moment.” This class is especially for any dancer who is ready to perform or is considering it.

Asharah and Mab, Just Mab workshops in Columbia

April's Alternacirque show will be graced with two of Washington D.C.'s finest alternative performers: Tribal Bellydancer Asharah is returning to the Art Bar stage, and we are absolutely thrilled to have dancer, fire performer and sideshow queen Mab, Just Mab bringing her vaudeville hilarity along for the ride. On Friday, April 24th, both performers will join us at Art Bar for our 9:30 show. 1211 Park St. in downtown Columbia, SC, no cover, the bar is 21+ but we're hopefully performing outside, barring bad weather.

And since they'll be in town anyway, we figured we would pick their professional brains about their craft while they were here. In other words, WORKSHOPS!

Workshops take place on Saturday, April 25th. We're in the process of confirming location, but it's likely to be at the Lexington Old Mill. More information as it comes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Technique Intensive with Asharah-- 12-3 PM, $60
Join Asharah for three hours of intense practice aimed at polishing your bellydance technique and building strength and stamina. Asharah is known for her clean technique and muscular execution , and in this workshop she will share with you tips and tricks for sharpening hard movements like hip work and chest locks and for deepening and intensifying smooth movements like undulations and Mayas. She will also share with you a few of her signature robotic movements to add spice to your bellydance movement vocabulary.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Showcraft with Mab, Just Mab- 20 Minutes in Vaudeville! 3:30 to 5:30 PM, $40

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ixu3RFStmQk

While there is no shortage of classes on "How To...", it's time to take it to the next level! Take those skills you have painstakingly learned, and work them into a great show!

This class covers how to build a "bit", and then how to take the bits and build a set and a show! We will also develop a toolbox of elements to get the most out of your audience, heckler handling techniques, and much much more. All performers welcome, not just bellydancers. If you're a sideshow artist, fire eater, hula hooper, host, emcee, poet, magician or improv comedian, come along and improve your presentation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Take both classes at the discounted price of $80.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Pay cash at the door, or pay in advance via paypal to natalie_c_brown@yahoo.com. Please specify which workshop(s) you are paying for.

A few words on TribO!

What's New at TribO for 2009?

We have a lovely new event site, in nearby Hendersonville, NC. This very private site is still close to town & all its amenities. This year we have heated cabins, the best vending area EVER, a bigger & wilder lake, & a whole studio dedicated to the Costumer's Arts. The terrain is fairly level & everything is close by, making it very friendly for our slower moving strollers of every age.

We also have a new WEBsite. New content on classes, teachers & more is being uploaded all the time. Feel free to contact us if you have more images of TribOriginal in previous years to add to the gallery.

Teaching staff includes:
Jill Parker
The Mezmer Society
Nevik 'Demonovitch' Hartnell
Mavi
Ziah, Majida & Darcy DeVine of the Awalim Dance Company
Gypsy Hands
Baraka Mundi
Urban Gypsy
Tribe Marrakech...

And don't forget that thanks to our annual Silent Auction,
TribOriginal has a need-based scholarship program to enable our community's children
to join their folks in this beautiful, diverse & artistically rich environment.

The Mezmer Society comes to Durham! April 25!

Greetings, lovely dancers!

Blue Moon Dance Company is sponsoring the Mezmer Society in a daylong
seminar on April 25, 2009, and we would love it if you would join us!

The Mezmer Society is a collaboration between Onca O'Leary (Director of
Baraka Mundi Live Music & Dance Ensemble, Bandit Queen A director, event
producer, and full-throttle entertainer) and Balkan accordionist August
Hoerr and their musical ensemble. The Society presents a delicious melange of Eastern European music, powerful bellydance technique, goodwill, bad
behavior, and sultry oddements. The year 2008 saw The Mezmer Society as
featured instructors at TribalCon & Southern Fried Tribal in
Atlanta, TribalFest in California, Tribal Revolution in Chicago and
TribOriginal in North Carolina. The Mezmer Society is fully committed to
spreading the aesthetic of hafla joy as quickly and loudly as possible!

Both workshops and the show will be held at The Solution Center, in
Brighton Hall, 1101 Slater Road, Durham, NC.
**Please don't contact The Solution Center directly about this event! Blue
Moon is happy to answer any and all of your questions.**

9:30 AM: Doors open for registration and shopping

10:00 AM – Noon: It's Magic: Exploring the Synergy between Live Music and
Dance
Live music can take your performance to a new strata of stage
presence, power, and community pleasure. Musicians love dancers that can
clearly describe what they need, and dancers love musicians that honor
those needs while making them look wonderful. This
high-spirited, interactive workshop addresses etiquette, effective
communication onstage and off, and tips on how to successfully
collaborate while being aware of everyone's interests. These fun
exercises in creating strong entrances, transitioning tempos, and
ending fabulously will all be accompanied by the (strains, wheezes, and
mellifluous sounds of the) Accordion. A fantastic workshop for both
musicians and dancers!

Noon - 1:00 PM: Lunch/shopping break

1:00- 4:00 PM: Crackerjack Cane Combos
It's all how you handle the big stick. Cane, or 'Raks Assaya', is a
traditional woman's dance art that offers tremendous creative
expression to Fusion, Burlesque, and Vaudeville artists. Building on the
bellydance vocabulary, we drill sustainable cane technique and explore
combos with attitude. Great for developing both troupe
precision and the theatrical face of fusion. A few canes will be
available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis, and there will be
some canes for sale as well. Workshop space is limited so
don't delay in signing up for the foxy and folkloric fun!

8:00 PM: Evening performance begins. (Doors open at 7:30 PM.) Light
refreshments will be served; no alcohol or unauthorized videotaping
permitted.
There will be a DVD of the performance available for purchase. Sign up for
the DVD now or at the door. No DVD orders will be taken after the event.

Details, directions and registration forms now available on our
Classes & Workshops page at
http://www.bluemoonbellydance.com/classes.html . Please note that if a
minimum number of participants have not registered by March 20, the
seminar and show will be cancelled, so get your registrations in early if
you wish to attend!

Please feel free to email me at skbeaman@gmail.com with any questions!

Thanks, and take care!

Sat Jan 17th at ART BAR: Delirium, Awalim, Asharah and Mezmer

Never say that nothing cool ever happens in Columbia. Ever.

Four of the finest Tribal Bellydance acts on the east coast, ranging from old school to new school, gothic to vaudeville, appear together at Art Bar (1211 Park Street in the Vista) on Saturday, January 17th. This is shaping up to be an absolutely killer show, and I'm so excited to be bringing these acts to Columbia, SC. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!

Performances start at 9 PM. For the mere cost of $5, you will get to see:

Delirium Tribal from Columbia, SC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pZD0UrCC7w
With its solid foundation in American Tribal Style Bellydance (the original tribal bellydance, for those following along at home), Delirium Tribal does it all: ATS improvisation, Tribal and Tribal Fusion, and even fire and circus arts with Columbia Alternacirque. Delirium will open the show with a classic ATS improv set, and later in the evening we'll show you the new stuff we've been working on: new solos, choreographies and an acrobatic, death-defying, six-person sword choreography that we really hope doesn't kill anybody.

Awalim from Atlanta, GA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX-LmaEZhVY
East Coast Tribal represent. Awalim was formed in 1999 under the Direction of Ziah Ali McKinney-Taylor as a group to bring World Fusion Tribal Bellydance to the stages of Atlanta and the Southeast US. Awalim's particular flavor of Tribal is decidedly upbeat and earthy while being sophisticated and urban, bringing what they feel are Atlanta's strongest characteristics to the Tribal genre.

Asharah from Alexandria, VA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvgzRKIPShM
Asharah is one of the rising star soloists in Tribal Bellydance. Known for her dark fusion and goth sensibilities, as well as immaculate technique fusing ticking and locking with classic tribal, Asharah's dramatic performances will blow you out of your chair and give you a taste of where Modern Tribal fusion is going.

The Mezmer Society from Asheville, NC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mgpDLQ_9wU
Onca and August had so much fun playing at Art Bar with Alternacirque last July, they are coming back and (I've been told) bringing more musicians. Founded in 2007, the Society fuses diverse elements such belly dance, cabaret performance, Romany music, foppish occultism, unapologetically pretentious Belle Epoque café living, goodwill, bad behavior, misappropriated pop songs, and the horribly misguided notion that one can try and squeeze an entire Balkan brass band into one accordion. And if all of my previous experience with the Mezmer Society holds, they will play and create mayhem all night long. Crazy kids.

The Mezmer Society teaching & performing at Elevation 2009, April 17-19 in Denver!

We are sublimely excited to bring the August and Onca to the Denver area for Elevation 2009!

Elevation 2009 is the 5th year of our yearly belly dance festival. It is held in the small Western town of Golden, CO, nestled down into a valley and up against the Rocky Mountains, near Denver.

The event venue is across the street from our store/studio Paprika, where some of the smaller classes will be held.
There are also hotels in the next block.

A beautiful river runs through the heart of town, and the largest brewery in the world offers free beer just 2 blocks away!

There will be 3 full days of classes, 2 excellent shows with pro sound, lights, DJ, and VJ.
The Fri night show is catered with a fabulous Middle Eastern buffet, and there will be attendee performances, and the Sat night show is for the teachers and a few special guests.

We hold our shows in a large club, and this really is one of the most FUN events around. It's not an event where everyone is made to sit quietly in a theater and suffer through long and drawn out shows. We have fun and dance and laugh and cut up and have a few dranky-dranks. We've got an excellent DJ of Indian decent fromt the Island of Trinidad that keeps us all jumping to his Chutney Soca and Bangin Bhangra rhythms.

This year more family friendly as well with Kids drumming and dancing classes as well as babysitters for the Fri and Sat night shows.

There will be a great bazaar with Merchants from all over the country.

The teachers for Elevation 2009 are:
The Mezmer Society: Balkan Gypsy Vaudvillian with Tribal Fusion stylings, and music classes
Ariellah: The Fusion Artist
Rachel Brice: this year with 8 full hours of intermediate/advanced technique
Tribe Marrakech: more from your hostess Fusionistas
Kassar: Slinky Sensual duo returns to share their newest creations
Elijah: World Burner Tribal Fusion
Romka: Badd Ass Fusion Swordsters
Elizabeth Ostteen: Henna Body Art class, and Hair Design & Styling for the Stage
Chris Chambers: Kids Belly Dance
Donovan Warnick: Doumbek, Riq, and Kids Drumming class

Look for sign up info to drop mid December. Save your ducets! This is gonna be another awesome event!

ONGOING CLASSES with DeLacey Santini start 1/8/09!

New Year, New Teacher!
In addition to our regular bellydance offerings, my gift to you in the New Year is ONGOING CLASSES with DeLacey Santini!
The eight week session runs from January 8- February 28th.

Dance Drills, Creative Conditioning & Amazing Isolations. Enjoy yourself as you dance hard with DeLacey, targeting the muscle groups for an engaged, internal practice. Staging, posture & performance presence will also be addressed.

What can I say about DeLacey?
DeLacey is a seriously dynamic performer. Having begun in Knoxville with Gypsy Hand's innovative Sara Griscom (one of my earliest students!), she has training in Greek, folkloric & fusion styles of bellydance. Major influences include Zoe Jakes & Mardi Love. She exemplifies this polished, sassy style & has opened for the Yard Dogs, performed live with the Beats Antique band & been a guest artist with the Mezmer Society. For good reason; audiences & bellydancers both love her. Catch some video at

myspace.com/1andonlymrs_santini

For January, World Spirit bellydance class schedule is simple!
Thursdays, 90 Biltmore Avenue 28801 above the Co-Op.
Level I-II with Onça 7-8pm
Level II-III with DeLacey 8-9pm

Class fees:
$12 drop-in anytime!
$45 for one class per week for a calendar month
$70 for both classes for a calendar month
$85 for two month intensive with DeLacey

There will be ONE CLASS ONLY Today, January 1st, 7-8pm. Come shake the cobwebs out after the break!
More classes will be added back in February in prep for our BIG SPRING SHOW.

Yes, we had planned to host them ourselves here in Asheville. BUT as the other half of the Mezmer band is playing in Europe,
we felt it was an inopportune time to rock out with these fine folks.
So dance family sister Natalie Brown has taken them on, and proudly presents:

Raquy and the Cavemen, with Special Guest, Delirium Tribal!

Thursday, Nov. 20th, 8PM at 701 Whaley in Columbia, SC

Raquy and the Cavemen bring their unique, hard-rockin' take on Middle
Eastern music to the Carolinas! They've thrilled audiences at
Lollapalooza, thrown down in Central Park, studied with musicians of
many continents, and now bring their music to 701 Whaley!

701 Whaley St., Columbia, SC 29201. $10 cover. Contact Natalie Brown
(natalie_c_brown@ yahoo.com) for more information.

help that poor gypsy ...

Scott (the cute gypsy in the vardo) needs some help. The last time he remembers having his bag of rings was at TribO and he wondered if someone might have found them after he left? They're a few silver pretties he's very attached to and wondered if they ended up in lost and found after he left or maybe the clean up crews might have found them around his camping area. Did anyone see a ziploc bag of men's rings after the vardo left? We'd appreciate any help you guys can offer in locating them. He's stripped the vardo hunting for them and they are nowhere to be found. He's so sad! I don't like to see my gypsy sad ...

Thanks for listening ...

Well, something stowed away and made it home in our car. Is this scarf yours? If so, comment on the picture or send me a message and we can get it back to you:
http://flickr.com/photos/50394911@N00/2885291820/

Also, did anyone find a pair of pajama pants printed with a small skull pattern? Last seen in the top of the mountain cabin parking area as we tried to fit everything into our car? I can't seem to find them and the only "logical" answer seems to be that I left them lying on the ground as I tried to repack some things. If you found them please let me know, they are so comfy that I'll happily pay their fare home!

Thanks!

because we never, ever, take a day off...
: )

hmmm -
The Indigo workshop last weekend just ROCKED, and the Yard Dogs Show was fantasteeq.

We've been asked to teach a ten week session at Claxton School starting after TribO.

Plans are afoot for the 2009 Holiday Parade - picture yourself on the gorgeous purple LaZoom bus on November 22.

We have Student Performances the first two weekends of October, in both Waynesville and Asheville!

There's a Hammam/Community get-together at Ohia's the Sunday After TribO. The 28th, I think?

Onca is teaching a 'Dancing with Props' workshop in Waynesville the first weekend of October. Open to ALL! There will be a show that night featuring the Mezmer Society, Solshine Bellydance, and others.

The entire Mezmer Society will be travelling to Chatty, TN, to rock out with workshops and a theatre show with Dandasha on October 11-12.

Save some thought for the upcoming hafla/recital in early December, too!

Sample TribO Packing List:

The 'What should I bring to Triboriginal' list
Everything but the kitchen sink!

Seriously, this event aims to nourish your secret self; bring whatever enables you to have a safe, excellent, educational and relaxing vacation getaway.
Although indoor spaces abound, be prepared for an all-weather experience. These North Carolina mountain days & nights can be splendidly warm, bracingly cool, even downright damp.
Lodging, Potties and Showers–
You do not need to bring a tent unless you choose NOT to stay in a cabin. Please note that your rate stays the same, whether you RV, cabin camp or tent it. The only foods you need to bring are your snacks of preference; Chef Oso will endeavor to meet most every food requirement for 3 meals a day, plus some supplementary late-nights munchies.

Every cabin is a wooden building with wooden floors, equipped with electrical lighting, fully civilized private showers and potties. You won't have to travel more than 25 feet indoors to meet basic water needs. Ample TP will be provided, but do bring towels and shower shoes.

Every cabin has beds-a-plenty, either bunk beds or metal-spring cots, all with mattresses. You WILL want to bring your own bedding; sheets, sack or blankets, pillows. Couples or families MAY wish to bring inflatable beds to suit their needs as the majority of beds onsite are singles.
Please note that the windows are only screened in, so if it is cold outside, it's cold in. The savvy camper may wish to bring tapestries to hang around their bunk or over their windows, for a more palatial and cozy stay.

I suggest using those fabulous big rubber totes from the Dollar Store for packing: they keep things free from humidity and minimize the likelihood of losing stuff. They aren't as easy to fly or drive as flexible duffle-type bags, so you decide what will work best for you. Most every bed has a cubby for shoes etc., and small hanging-closet spaces, so feel free to bring some of your nicer things on hangers.

Travelling with kids? BRING THEM A COSTUME of some sort if you can for our kids masquerade; a picture of the child for a group project is also helpful. The bigger kisd will need towels and swimsuits. The kids staff thank you for being prepared.

Groups–
If you wish to camp with particular folks, please determine a group name "Gryffindor", "Slytherin" etc., and put that in your registrations so we may ensure you are assigned cabin space together. If you have special needs of any variety, please provide us with that info at the time of registration as well: small children, disabilities, hopes of sleeping in or rising early, etc.

Sample Packing List:
Again, your packing list will depend on your interests in being here: training, performance, unwinding, sword-fighting? swimming and sunbathing? learning to juggle? traveling with friends and family?

Food stuffs:
Lots of water
Cash and credit for vendors and other costs
site pre-registration
tent, ropes, poles, stakes
sledgehammer or mallet to stake it in
extra rope & stakes

Namaste and see you soon!

I rarely make it on tribe.net these days, but I patiently persevered through the long load times to get here, just to say....IT'S ALMOST HERE!!!! YEA!!

I cannot wait to see everyone again, and to drum, and dance, and circus it up with folks!

it was super nice of miss Onca to throw this li'l shin-dig for my birthday ;-) (I'm an Equinox baby, yea!) I will hopefully be spending the weekend of my actual birthday drinking and laughing with my friends, maybe with a little drumming and dancing mixed in there ;-) I have no intention of growing older gracefully.

and as an added special bonus, I will be teaching a "how to make a davul" workshop/tutorial for all you folks who wanna put your own party drum together! if you are interested, I can post a supplies list of things you should bring and we can help each other put them together. :-)

reply here or send me a private message.

and again, I am super excited!!!!!
see all soon!

Hey folks! in just a few short weeks I will be celebrating my birthday by heading down to Tribo!

and, to be realistic, it's a big ol' question mark if I can make it down without someone to share the gas. I have plenty of room in my car, both down and up, and I am flexible on travel dates.

I will be bringing 3 davuls down, and bringing 1 back, so it kind of rules out my riding down with someone else.

Drop me a line (mab@jaladrum.org) or forward this on to anyone you think may be interested!

Thanks!

Hafla at Lisa Zahiya's studio on Saturday, October 11th at 8pm!

Sesen bellydance troupe will be hosting a Hafla at Lisa Zahiya's studio in Asheville on Saturday, October 11th at 8pm with a $ 5 donation at the door. Lisa's studio is located in downtown Asheville on Carolina Lane. Enter the Lane from Woodfin Street and look for the “Studio Zahiya” sign.

Whether you're a new bellydance student, a seasoned dancer, or a middle eastern musician, we'd love to have you come perform for the community and celebrate with us. If you're interested in performing, please contact Kelly at kellyb@ashevillecommunity.org so we can make sure to add you to the set list. Our wonderful out of town dancers are welcome to come and perform as well. We can probably squeeze a few folks in at our community house if getting a hotel is out of your budget. Just email me if you need a place to stay. I live 15 minutes outside of Asheville on two wooded acres in Leicester, NC.

More details to come later :)

Hey folks,

(I hope this is okay to post). A friend of mine bought a ticket for TribO but very sadly cannot go. She'd REALLY like to transfer her registration to someone else at the VERY cheap price she paid at the opening of registration. Only $300, or maybe a little less.

Please send me a message if you're interested, or pass this along to someone who might be.

Thanks!

(Onca, I love the new photo!!!)

World renown bellydancer, Moria Chappell, graces stages around the globe bringing the exquisite art of Tribal Fusion Bellydance to its utmost in elegance, darkness and intensity of expression. Tribal Fusion is an eclectic expression of the moves and emotions born from the country and heart of the Middle East and beyond. With an underpinning of the old, the authentic and by using the antiqued jewelry, textiles and musical instruments connoting the essence of these ancient cultures, an American ear for industrial rebellion is the juxtaposed and layered atop thereby weaving the contemporary myth, styles and beliefs of a modern era. Creating a mixture that is enchanting darkness, Moria embodies the mythos of a modern industry and a forgotten ancestry.
(from Moria's website)

Saturday 12-4:30 (includes a 30 minute break): DANCE AND MUSIC THEOLOGY: This will bridge between music, interpretation, staging, costuming and props as integrated to give a particular message. We will incorporate Jungian depth psychology as it pertains to archetypes and a lot of Martha Graham ideology.

Sunday 12-4:30 (includes a 30 minute break): We get down to business with dance practice, drills and choreography with props and how to dance WITH your prop as a partner.

For both days of classes (that's 8 hours of classes!) is $120
One day (one class) is $75

Saturday night there will be an all-star show featuring Moria, Gypsy Hands, Bodhicitta (of Nashville) and more to be announced. Location TBA.

To pre-register (highly recommended, space is limited!) or for any questions email delaceysantini@gmail.com or claire@gypsyhands.com.

Naima

Saturday:

“Classical Egyptian Technique and Combinations” - Take your dancing to the next level with challenging hip technique that will enhance your performance. Focusing on personal style and music interpretation, each dancer will bring out their “dance personality” and put it to use in each dance combination. Special attention to body language and facial expression will take place in this unique class, with exercises to help dancers unleash new ways of interpreting the music.

"Reaching New Heights” - Bozenka will give each student specialized attention on transitions, execution of movement, aesthetics, and musicality (what Bozenka likes to refer to as (T.E.A.M.). To take your dancing to a higher level, awareness of all these elements is essential. Let Bozenka guide you through exercises (dance combinations) that will help you project better posture, strengthen your articulation of movements and put a spark into every performance. This challenging class will also incorporate improvisation to unleash self-expression and will focus on musicality.

Sunday:

“Latin/Arabic Fusion Combinations By Bozenka” - Learn how to put your Salsa, Cha-Cha and more into your belly dancing. This moderately paced class will teach you simple and flavorful combinations to incorporate a Latin dance flare into your own dance routine.

“Facial Expressions and Body Language” - This is one of Bozenka’s most popular workshops among dancers who are at an advanced level but is encouraged for dancers of all levels. This workshop focuses on the interpretation between Dancer and Music as well as the communication between Dancer and Audience. Bozenka uses creative methods to encourage dancers to interpret the feelings caused by the music and to learn to convey those feelings to the audience. Dancers learn how appropriate body language and using facial expressions take their performance to a higher level. This workshop is recommended for groups of less than 50 participants.

Southern Fried Tribal @ Red Light Cafe!!!!

w/ Awalim (GA), Devyani (AL), the Mezmer Society (NC) and Jahara Phoenix(GA)!

Doors open at 8, show starts at 9pm
Tickets for the show are only available at the door, price is $12

Workshops with our out of town guests!

It is a long standing tradition to have an out of town guest at our summer Red Light show and to invite them to teach a workshop....this year we have TWO! The workshops will be taking place at Red Light (very exciting!) so space is limited to 20 people for each workshop. The workshops WILL sell out (you learned your lesson at TribalCon, right?) so register early.

The schedule for during the day will be:

Registration will take place at 12 noon at Red Light Cafe.

12:30-2:30 Burlesque-esque with Onca- Get in touch with your vaudeville attitude, with bad*ss strengthening drills, work on dance combos, theatre excersizes, and more! How to walk, emote, etc...Now that you know how to dance, how do you PERFORM?

~The Mezmer Society was founded in autumn 2007, debuting at the Yard Dogs Road show in Asheville and and this year they were invited to teach and perform at TribalFest in CA! Onca is the Director of Baraka Mundi and August is the President of the Accordian club, together they are the Mezmer Society, fusing the spirit of the speak easy with bellydance.

2:30-4:30pm ATS formations, fades and combos with Devyani!- Our favorite subjects!!!

~Devyani performs pure American Tribal Style Bellydance (ATS) in theFatChanceBellyDance format. ATS is a modern style of bellydance with roots in Egyptian bellydance and stylistic influences from Spain and India . The dancers interact through a system of non-verbal cues to create a fresh, high energy performance unique to each venue and performance. This style is the launching pad for many Tribal Fusion groups. All pieces performed tonight will be in the traditional ATS improvisational style perfected by creator, Carolena Nericcio.
