For you folks who are excited about learning the roots of Tribal, "Cued Group Improvisation" aka ATS - there's a workshop this fall in Morganton to check out. The event is being put on by our buddies, the Rising Sun Tribe. If you go to TribO, you know them as the smiling faces at the Registration desk.
The Blue Moon Dance Company are our even older buddies in the NC community, and are really great both at Improv and choreography.
Their Emily has been a member of our student troupe, World Spirit Luna, in the past.
Best of all, it's a genuine family affair; Blue Moon is a blend of three families, mothers and daughters!

Moria in Knoxville, TN Aug. 2,3!!

(Onca, I love the new photo!!!)

World renown bellydancer, Moria Chappell, graces stages around the globe bringing the exquisite art of Tribal Fusion Bellydance to its utmost in elegance, darkness and intensity of expression. Tribal Fusion is an eclectic expression of the moves and emotions born from the country and heart of the Middle East and beyond. With an underpinning of the old, the authentic and by using the antiqued jewelry, textiles and musical instruments connoting the essence of these ancient cultures, an American ear for industrial rebellion is the juxtaposed and layered atop thereby weaving the contemporary myth, styles and beliefs of a modern era. Creating a mixture that is enchanting darkness, Moria embodies the mythos of a modern industry and a forgotten ancestry.
(from Moria's website)

Saturday 12-4:30 (includes a 30 minute break): DANCE AND MUSIC THEOLOGY: This will bridge between music, interpretation, staging, costuming and props as integrated to give a particular message. We will incorporate Jungian depth psychology as it pertains to archetypes and a lot of Martha Graham ideology.

Sunday 12-4:30 (includes a 30 minute break): We get down to business with dance practice, drills and choreography with props and how to dance WITH your prop as a partner.

For both days of classes (that's 8 hours of classes!) is $120
One day (one class) is $75

Saturday night there will be an all-star show featuring Moria, Gypsy Hands, Bodhicitta (of Nashville) and more to be announced. Location TBA.
See you soon!!!

Naima

Saturday:

“Classical Egyptian Technique and Combinations” - Take your dancing to the next level with challenging hip technique that will enhance your performance. Focusing on personal style and music interpretation, each dancer will bring out their “dance personality” and put it to use in each dance combination. Special attention to body language and facial expression will take place in this unique class, with exercises to help dancers unleash new ways of interpreting the music.

"Reaching New Heights” - Bozenka will give each student specialized attention on transitions, execution of movement, aesthetics, and musicality (what Bozenka likes to refer to as (T.E.A.M.). To take your dancing to a higher level, awareness of all these elements is essential. Let Bozenka guide you through exercises (dance combinations) that will help you project better posture, strengthen your articulation of movements and put a spark into every performance. This challenging class will also incorporate improvisation to unleash self-expression and will focus on musicality.

Sunday:

“Latin/Arabic Fusion Combinations By Bozenka” - Learn how to put your Salsa, Cha-Cha and more into your belly dancing. This moderately paced class will teach you simple and flavorful combinations to incorporate a Latin dance flare into your own dance routine.

“Facial Expressions and Body Language” - This is one of Bozenka’s most popular workshops among dancers who are at an advanced level but is encouraged for dancers of all levels. This workshop focuses on the interpretation between Dancer and Music as well as the communication between Dancer and Audience. Bozenka uses creative methods to encourage dancers to interpret the feelings caused by the music and to learn to convey those feelings to the audience. Dancers learn how appropriate body language and using facial expressions take their performance to a higher level. This workshop is recommended for groups of less than 50 participants.

Southern Fried Tribal @ Red Light Cafe!!!!

w/ Awalim (GA), Devyani (AL), the Mezmer Society (NC) and Jahara Phoenix(GA)!

Doors open at 8, show starts at 9pm
Tickets for the show are only available at the door, price is $12

Workshops with our out of town guests!

It is a long standing tradition to have an out of town guest at our summer Red Light show and to invite them to teach a workshop....this year we have TWO! The workshops will be taking place at Red Light (very exciting!) so space is limited to 20 people for each workshop. The workshops WILL sell out (you learned your lesson at TribalCon, right?) so register early.

The schedule for during the day will be:

Registration will take place at 12 noon at Red Light Cafe.

12:30-2:30 Burlesque-esque with Onca- Get in touch with your vaudeville attitude, with bad*ss strengthening drills, work on dance combos, theatre excersizes, and more! How to walk, emote, etc...Now that you know how to dance, how do you PERFORM?

~The Mezmer Society was founded in autumn 2007, debuting at the Yard Dogs Road show in Asheville and and this year they were invited to teach and perform at TribalFest in CA! Onca is the Director of Baraka Mundi and August is the President of the Accordian club, together they are the Mezmer Society, fusing the spirit of the speak easy with bellydance.

2:30-4:30pm ATS formations, fades and combos with Devyani!- Our favorite subjects!!!

~Devyani performs pure American Tribal Style Bellydance (ATS) in theFatChanceBellyDance format. ATS is a modern style of bellydance with roots in Egyptian bellydance and stylistic influences from Spain and India . The dancers interact through a system of non-verbal cues to create a fresh, high energy performance unique to each venue and performance. This style is the launching pad for many Tribal Fusion groups. All pieces performed tonight will be in the traditional ATS improvisational style perfected by creator, Carolena Nericcio.

The NEW Baraka Mundi website is up and running - a whole new look and feel for Bandit Queendom. www.barakamundi.com
It's more streamlined and a tad vintage in flair. Check it out, and feel free to offer me feedback off-list at my personal email.
The beautiful artwork was made for me by Kitty Love of Arts2People.

AND, if you click on the Other Projects link, or just go to www.barakamundi.com/mezmer, you will see what else is afoot.
The Mezmer Society is my touring project for 2008-2009 with accordionist extraordinaire August Hoerr.

I am excited enough to be doing little shimmies in place!
Happy summer,

(a review for those who couldn't be there. most of the performances mentioned are on youtube at this point, and photos of all of them are on the blacksheep tribe. the vids and pics are nowhere near as good as real life, but al least give you a little taste!)

I think it was around December when I approached my husband with the idea that I would like to spend an exorbitant amount of money to fly to California, live in a hotel for a week with my best buddy and dance partner Nur, take umpteen classes with my bellydance heroes, and perform on one of the biggest and best known stages for tribal bellydancers in this country. When he said, “Okay honey, I think you should do it” I was floored, excited, overwhelmed, and so much more.

And so, on a Tuesday in early May, I found myself on the long flight to San Francisco, giddy with excitement and joy, ready for adventure and a good butt-kicking.

My first and very short experience of San Fran was driving through its famous hilly streets in the rental car, amazed at the way the houses are built touching and wondering where all the poor people with no yards take their dogs out. We drove over the golden gate bridge, which is actually red, and stopped at the overlook to gaze at Alcatraz. Then it was on to Santa Rosa, where our hotel waited for us.

We arrived the first morning at the community center in Sebastopol where the Fest is held, ready to dance but early enough to check out the first vendors on the scene. We immediately were drawn to a booth full of racks of leather pouch belts, Hipstirr . This is one of the things we had decided we would get at the Fest. Nur found the perfect one for her within the first few minutes. It’s red leather with several snapping and several zipping pockets, and shaped with pointy places and soft curves. I found a couple I really liked, but decided not to choose until the end of the day. By then I did choose one, dark brown leather with two outer snap pockets and two inner zipping ones. Also kind of pointy and curvy. Very pretty. Yay!

Shopping highlights included many of the most well know tribal goodie providers from all over the country: Wild Card and the Five and Diamond, with their fancy leather belts, shoulder holsters, and pouches, beautiful vests and cutsie bloomers, and a wide array of fabulous ear jewelry; Once in a Blue Moon, the purveyors of the famous metal bra cups and some really cool belts made mainly of bone; Eventide Music Productions, represented by Jeremiah of Solace with their new release Opium Head as well as lots and lots of other music and costuming goodies; Minerva’s Antennae, who had a variety of tribal costuming and adornments; Creatureskins, creators of leather armor and armbands, very medieval looking stuff; Samiah, seamstress of renaissance wear including beautiful pirate coats and wraptops and dresses; Geisha Moth Designs, who make really cool pants and dance tops; and of course the fabulous Melodia Pants booth, where dancer after dancer had her pants dreams fulfilled.

Oh, the classes... where to begin. I took so many, and they all were fun.

My first favorite was Amy Sigil of Unmata. Rockin’ the Tribal Boat was the name of the class, and it was truly rockin! We learned some hip hoppie and Polynesian style tribal improv. The energy level was incredible, we were bouncing all over the place. One of the combos had us working in foursomes, moving in and out of center and crossing each other, changing places, all at a pretty good clip. There was much laughing as we all tried to figure out the complicated directional changes and not run into each other. Having not taken a class from Amy before, I was thrilled to have the chance and must say, I cannot wait to have the opportunity again! Her teaching style is upbeat and easy to follow, her class music is high tempo and modern, she is quick to see which students need a hand and can talk them through and catch them up. Yay Unmata!

The second best class I took was Tribaltique's contact partnering class. Molly and Julia were funny and super nice. The class was all about different ways to work with a partner and change positions on stage. We drew from different parner dance styles, such as salsa and tango, as well as doing some fun spins and tricky drops! I was inspired to try some partner dance classes when I got back home, and to also incorporate styles you might not associate with bellydance into our fusion style.

Ariellah’s class, the darker side of drilling, offered up an intense bellydance drilling workout. We learned some new ways of stretching and warming up, drilled some moves in ways we hadn’t seen before, and learned some really cool combos. My favorite quote from Ariellah: “I like to turn the music up really loud, then scream at the top of my lungs!” I have Ariellah’s instructional video, Contemporary Bellydance and Yoga Conditioning, which I love, so I felt like I knew somewhat what to expect from her workshop. She came through, with a kind of tough love feel and dynamic personality I didn’t get from any of the other instructors.

The classes from the Indigo and Bellydance Superstar instructors were all pretty similar. We had Kami Liddle, Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes, and Mardi Love there, and I took all four of their workshops. They all ran sort of the same way: warm up and stretch, drill a few moves, then dive into combos that build to choreography. Kami and Rachel both spent a good deal of time with the somewhat challenging movement set called “sidewinder”, and I found it interesting that they don’t do it quite the same way. Zoe was a riot as usual, her personality is really fun and silly, I always enjoy her classes. Mardi’s choreography felt heavy on drama, with a 40’s and 50’s movie star and poster girl quality that seems to be present in all of her stuff. All of these classes were great, although even with the detailed note taking I did, I find myself having a bit of a hard time remembering much of the choreography.

Samantha Riggs taught a fun and imaginative class called Why is the Rum Always Gone? You got it- pirate bellydance! This was a fast paced, tongue in cheek adventure in dance. We tossed around plastic water bottles (they use glass liquor bottles in performances, but for class that was deemed unsafe  ), learned combos with names like “Fred Astaire” and “Double Attitude”, and did umi’s while drinking from our faux rum bottles. Fun fun fun!

The Pinup girl bellydance class with Michelle was chock full of information about pinup art and history, with a four page printout. We learned the secret of looking like a pinup model is in the facial expressions, shaping your mouth into the vowels but with lots of exaggeration. And the costuming secret? Bullet bras!

The show at Tribal Fest was something like 28 hours long! We certainly didn’t see it all, but we did see a lot. There were surprises and old standbys, a lot of fusion and a lot of classic ATS. Pirate bellydance, Dark fusion, a vampire bat, some contact juggling, beautiful ribbon dancing, Bangra, Bollywood, and sooooo much more.

We were awed and amazed by Asharah, her stage presence was enthralling. She demanded attention and got it all. You Tube it!

Unmata delivered the kind of performance they have inspired with for so long. I was tickled when Primus started playing! Energy, Bounce, Attitude, these girls got it!

Verbatim is Amy Sigil of Unmata’s student troupe, and they brought it too! All of the intensity of a great ITS troupe, with some scimitars and cute costumes, and a male dancer!

Sharkra! Holy Wow! I had vaguely heard of them before, but had no idea what they were about. They left me breathless and dreamy. They danced with staves, drew on each other with lipstick war paint, and stomped all over the stage. Like they claimed in the program, Shakra is totally stompalicious.

The Indigo had a long and fun performance that included animal masks, a tea party, musical chairs, and a Balkan brass band! It’s always inspiring to see these ladies in action.

Blacksheep Bellydance and Fatchance Bellydance worked the American Tribal Style they are so well known for, along with several other groups.

There were some great free dance opportunities with such well known bands as Helm and Raquy and the cavemen, who invited the crowd to jump on stage and break it down.

The Mezmer Society’s Onca and August were representing Asheville well. As usual August got the audience swooning with his accordion and deep lavish vocals. Onca rocked a cane dance, they swayed us all some more with her singing.

And Nur and I broke out our new cowgirl/ spy fusion piece. What a thrill to perform on the same stage as all of those other great dancers! Wearing furry chaps, colorful cowgirl hats, and western fringy vests, we incorporated some tango from Nur’s recent studies and some clogging steps from my years in Vermont as a clogging instructor.
Then we played spies to a piece of video game music, removing the chaps, hats and vests to the cheers and whistles of the audience, revealing our tribal fusion getup beneath. We wrapped up The Forbidden set with Derivations, by Beats Antique.

Then there were the after parties. Wow. Dancing to DJ Amar and Maduro, performances by Frederique, Zoe Jakes, Sooz, Samantha Riggs and her daughter Josephine, The Beckys, and oh so much more. If only one didn’t need sleep! We could have gone all night!

Tribal Fest also taught me an important lesson about personal stamina: eight hours of classes in a day might be too much (heehee!) and if I plan to go to the after parties for more than an hour it might be a good idea to schedule in time to nap during the day. Also, Northern California might be known for having gorgeous mild weather, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be a heat wave in early May! It was 90-100 degrees the whole time we were there!

If you have thought about going to Tribal Fest, or any of the really big bellydance gatherings for that matter, and haven’t done it yet, I highly recommend giving in to the urge. These big fests are a treat you really should give yourself. The learning and inspiration, the chance to ask questions of the dancers you admire, the chance to be in the front rows for their performances, and getting to perform for peers and dance lovers, all add up to a really great time well worth the resources spent. Hooray for bellydance!

And Asheville was well-represented in Sunday's show,
as Soubhi and Nur of The Forbidden, Baraka Mundi alumna, performed just a few numbers before August and I.

So many good performers and great friends in one place -
I remembered anew why I like all this dance stuff!
So much laundry to do, so many memories, so many people to thank - Yay!

Kami Liddle was more incredible than ever,
Samantha Riggs and her crew of villains were so creative and cardio I couldn't keep my chair,
Farhana is the ultimate Ham,
and you gotta love that the Indigo brought an entire balkan Brasz band onstage.
Fred was so fresh and sparkly...
Oh, and Shakra! Holy cholis, now I know what all the fuss was about - they took the ROOF off.
i wish I got to see everyone, but with 28ish hours of performance, one had to really pick.
The Romka and Solace/GodDamsel crews brought us never-ending delight.

I will say - I think I was the luckiest gal at the ball, since I was accompanied by the talented August. Live music forever!

Sadie Workshop
August 9-10, 2008
Winston-Salem, NC
Wake Forest University

Contact Patti Melton for information 336-978-6050
www.shimmies-r-us.com/events.html

Brought to you by Ruby Scarab Belly Dancers
Hip-hip hooray!

Sadie is an International performing artist, instructor and
choreographer
who is recognized worldwide as one of today's most exciting and
talented
belly dancers. First seen as a ³Rising Star² on BD-TV Vol. II in
2004, Sadie
now teaches and performs across the globe, has over a dozen
instructional
and performance videos on the market, and is one of the highest viewed
belly
dancers on YouTube with over two million hits. In 2008, both IAMED and
Hollywood Music Center will release several new instructional videos
featuring Sadie.

Sadie draws upon an innate understanding of movement, instilled from 14
years of gymnastics and swimming training in her youth. She began
practicing
belly dance nearly a decade ago and has studied with many reputable
Middle
Eastern dance and music teachers from around the world. She experienced
two
influential moments in her education. Two extended visits to Turkey
allowed
her to study and observe the dance in its native culture, while doumbek
lessons from master percussionist and musician Souhail Kaspar gave her
a
great understanding of the varied Middle-Eastern rhythms and their
relationships between music and dance.

Sadie¹s lifelong love for dance, music and culture has prompted her to
explore and study other forms of world dances such as Brazilian Samba,
Salsa, Hip-Hop, Tahitian, Hula and Flamenco, while being mindful of
strong
Ballet and Jazz foundation. Sadie exhibits a style that is uniquely
hers.

Based out of Denver, CO, she can be found teaching her weekly classes
and
dancing at some of the city¹s finest restaurants, nightclubs and
events.
Sadie, in partnership with Kaya, is one of the founders of the exciting
dance company Groove du Monde, meaning Groove of the world, a perfectly
suited title to encompass the passion and respect the two share for all
the
music and dances of the world.

I appreciate the all folks who came to the workshop and show this weekend.
Both the folks from far away, for choosing to commit time to the drive and being in our funky little town,
and also the local dancers who turned out to support the event and rock the hafla!
Oh and Augsut who made the pahty happen with his tonnage of obscure toonage.
Many many thanks.

Any dancers around Old Fort?

I'm coming to Asheville the week of March 22-29 to stay with my mom off the Old Fort exit. I was hoping to find some other dancers in that area to hang out with. I'm definitely going to the Ziah workshop and it would be great to find another dancer from that area to run around with that week.

A. general event info
C. A packing list!

Part A:
The event opens at 12 noon on Friday, September 13 and classes begin at 12:30. We have a great registration crew in place to get you onsite quickly, so you can make the most of your adventure. If you have an online Paypal confirmation, please bring it to expedite matters. You will also be asked to do a quick medical info form, waiver, and give us your car info. At registration, you will be given your shift assignments, and be reminded to attend a quick mandatory informational meeting with Claire, this year's WS Goddess, at 1pm Friday. WS folks unable to attend the Friday meeting are required to attend a second meeting 9am Saturday morning. As stated previously, WS folks will need to offer up their shift collateral at registration. This is merely a formality, but one we need to stick to, so as to ensure everyone does their share. We need either your credit card info, or a signed check for the full Tribo fee. Once your shifts are done in good order, this information will be destroyed.

Other info:
New this year is the Cafe, serving sweets, snacks and coffee, with wine, beer, and shisha waterpipes in the evenings.
Speaking of alcohol - you may BYOB or linger in the Cafe and sip theirs. We ask that you be respectful of the boundaries of the campground. Merri-Mac is proud of its conservative Christian values, and as renters, it is our duty to respect that. What is illegal and unwise in the Muggle World is illegal here, too! Be considerate of Tribo and Merri-Mac in all your actions. Thank you!

Other tidbits: Now we have a whole Pavillion dedicated to your shopping pleasure, and a professional event photographer and show videographer, so you can relive the fun at home. Also, the silent auction Friday and Saturday will benefit the budding Kid's Program Scholarship fund, so consider bringing anything you might wish to contribute as a tax-deductable donation.

The last class ends at 3:30 on Sunday. We ask that folks be offsite by 5pm unless other arrangements have been made. We can't go home till you do...

Part B: Teachers & Vendors are encouraged to share with us your 'eta' so we may plan appropriately. Please remember to bring lots of warm bedding, and towels, unless other arrangements have been made. Perfomers, please be sure to get your info and music in well in advance and on time, or we may be forced to make stuff up about you for the program --- beware, we are very, very creative.
Vendors: The Pavillion has an earthen floor - in extreme wet, we will put hay down in the aisles. Meanwhile, Vendor Angel/Overloard Miki suggests that you bring rugs or other floor coverings for your area, if you are concerned. Bring coverings or bins for your wares for nighttime and extreme weather, just in case. There will be summerweight sides all around and the Pavillion rental company is brainstorming with us how to close the openings at night to maximize security. Service and Security crew will sweep thru the grounds at night, including the Pavillion. The Pavillion is internally lit from above with festive banquet lighting. They assure us this will be adequate to our purpose. Hence, we are not permitting any auxiliary lighting in Vendor's booths this year (We seriously doubt the camp wiring can take it.)

To support the Kids Scholarship Fund we are asking Vendors to consider making a donation to the Silent Auction. We hope to to encourage the Vendors to participate in some extended Saturday evening festivities by being open for some late-night post-show shopping, ala Midnight Madness.
2007 Vendors include our old friends Magical Fashions, Father Dunn, Mystic Creations, Eventide Productions aka 'the Solace Guy', Wylie Woven Wire, Beyond Tradition Henna, Studio Khamsa, Looney Bin Productions, semi-permanent make-up with Janis David, and a plethora of instructor Wares including Zafira, Rockabelly, Kassar, Baraka Mundi, and probably a few more that I can't lay my mind to because this event is just so darn star-studded.

Part C: The 'What should I bring to Triboriginal' list
Everything but the kitchen sink!

Seriously, this event aims to nourish your secret self; bring whatever enables you to have a safe, excellent, educational and relaxing vacation getaway.
Although indoor spaces abound, be prepared for an all-weather experience. These North Carolina mountain days & nights can be splendidly warm, bracingly cool, even downright damp.
Lodging, Potties and Showers–
You do not need to bring a tent unless you choose NOT to stay in a cabin. Please note that your rate stays the same, whether you RV, cabin camp or tent it. The only foods you need to bring are your snacks of preference; Chef Oso will endeavor to meet most every food requirement for 3 meals a day, plus some supplementary late-nights munchies.

Every cabin is a wooden building with wooden floors, equipped with electrical lighting, fully civilized private showers and potties. You won't have to travel more than 25 feet indoors to meet basic water needs. Ample TP will be provided, but do bring towels and shower shoes.

Every cabin has beds-a-plenty, either bunk beds or metal-spring cots, all with mattresses. You WILL want to bring your own bedding; sheets, sack or blankets, pillows. Couples or families MAY wish to bring inflatable beds to suit their needs as the majority of beds onsite are singles.
Please note that the windows are only screened in, so if it is cold outside, it's cold in. The savvy camper may wish to bring tapestries to hang around their bunk or over their windows, for a more palatial and cozy stay.

I suggest using those fabulous big rubber totes from the Dollar Store for packing: they keep things free from humidity and minimize the likelihood of losing stuff. They aren't as easy to fly or drive as flexible duffle-type bags, so you decide what will work best for you. Most every bed has a cubby for shoes etc., and small hanging-closet spaces, so feel free to bring some of your nicer things on hangers.

Travelling with kids? BRING THEM A COSTUME of some sort if you can for our kids masquerade; a picture of the child for a group project is also helpful. The bigger kisd will need towels and swimsuits. The kids staff thank you for being prepared.

Groups–
If you wish to camp with particular folks, please determine a group name "Gryffindor", "Slytherin" etc., and put that in your registrations so we may ensure you are assigned cabin space together. If you have special needs of any variety, please provide us with that info at the time of registration as well: small children, disabilities, hopes of sleeping in or rising early, etc.

Sample Packing List:
Again, your packing list will depend on your interests in being here: training, performance, unwinding, sword-fighting? swimming and sunbathing? learning to juggle? traveling with friends and family?

Food stuffs:
Lots of water
Specials and kidstuffs
Snacks and libations as desired. Please note that new this year is our cafe which offers snacks, shisha pipes and wine and beer

Knoxville Zafira Show, April 5th

Raks Knoxvillia: a Speakeasy Event

The show that evening will be held at World Grotto at 9:30, and will feature Zafira, along with Ananda, Dandasha and the Mezmer Society. Set in the 30's and 40's, this show will weave a tale of lovelorn desire, ambition, comedic relief and heart wrenching loss: in the form of a silent film. Travel back in time as we explore antics and romantics of early theatre, dance and music.

Workshop space still available. Contact Jaia for registration information.

We have several "Master Class" topics ready for you TribOysters, but we want to know what you are looking for.
Our idea of a master class is to focus on one or two skills with lots of attention to detail. We want to work with you as an individual instead of preachin' to the choir. Let us know what YOU want so we can shape the workshop to your interests.

Can't wait to see you at TribO!

I have a ton of stuff I don't wear anymore, doesn't fit etc. and plan to bring a bunch to class tomorrow.
Jewelry, cholis, skirts, pantaloons, scarves, alot of it never been out on the racks before.
It'll all be pretty darn chaep. It's part of my move-it-on-out philosophy.
And if you need other stuff, belts, skirts, bras etc. made, talk to Claire.
