stemming from one of saritas posts in another tribe, I am trying to find out if any one knows anything about malaya, or oman/arabic booty dance. There are a number of posts on youtube, but all most no rational discussion of what it is apart from a couple of referances to it being a spirtual dance, possibly african arab from oman and the united arab emirates. All the other comments are racial hatred and bigotry. wiki has nothing ...

Re: malaya, or maybe m3laya
Wed, January 23, 2008 - 12:09 PMHi Maiwenn!
I too, have been asking around about this kind of dancing and so far I've come up with nothing. I really would like to know what this dance is all about and where it actually comes from.

Re: malaya, or maybe m3laya
Thu, January 24, 2008 - 6:26 AMHmmm. It reminds me of some of the stuff I've seen in an ethnic dance from the Siwa (?sp) Owasis. So there might be a connection there.
Just a thought,
Halleyah :)

Wed, January 30, 2008 - 12:53 PMVenus will have lots of info on this. Some members of our Repertory class performed a Melaya Luf piece at our June 2007 Recital.

Re: malaya, or maybe m3laya
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 1:06 PMThis is not to be confused with the flirty Egyptian dance called Melaya Luf in which the dancer wears a shawl type wrap, head scarf with pom poms, and flip flop shoes.
In this case, Malaya refers to the large black scarf wrapped around the dancer's heads:

Re: malaya, or maybe m3laya
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 5:07 PMWell I myself am very well aware of the Egyptian dance [malaya luf]...But the 'booty' dancing featured on the clip is from Dubai. Since that country tends to cater to a multicultural demographic, I wonder if this dance is imported from some place like Africa and has been adopted by the locals and popularized there. In some clips depicting this dance, it seems rather strange, almost ritualistic. What if in fact it is called "malaya"? It would be interesting to find other translations of that word/name of which there may be various.
