Would anyone be interested in learning fan from me? I'm looking at the possibility of offering this through community ed. I'm trying to gauge interest, as well as if this should be a one quarter deal, or two in order to learn a choreography for a show.
Thoughts? Opinions? $.02?
I may have the opportunity to pick up fans ahead of time and offer them for sale as well.

Re: Taking a poll...
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 8:49 AMWhat is your fan background - when did you start, who did you learn from, are you still actively performing with fan? I think these are important questions. For any workshop or class I take, I would want to know about my instructor's background and expertise before I signed up, and since I didn't know that you did fan work, I would want to know more about your fan experience.
Also, Zuza is offering fan workshops - it's listed in her tribe "msZuza Productions". Just an FYI.
As for workshop, it might work nice to have 1 workshop that includes a short choreography if there's a small class, but if you have a bigger class, maybe you could split and have to workshop separate from the choreography. -

Re: Taking a poll...
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 3:12 PMWow. You do a lot of homework before taking a community ed class. :)
I've been dancing with fans for about a year. From what I've seen of Zuza's work, the style of fans that I use is quite different from hers. She uses more flamenco-style fans. I use Chinese dance fans. The technique is quite different.
I have not studied fan formally beyond a few private lessons with people who understand performance. I am not aware of anyone teaching fan formally at the moment. (Though I use Chinese dance fans, I do not use them the way that you would in Chinese dance.) I think this is one prop that is going to have more innovation associated with it than lineage.
The technique that I use is heavily influenced by veil. I have been doing veil for 5 years, and I've studied that plenty over the years with Margo, Kathy, Cassandra, and others. -

Wed, April 2, 2008 - 4:33 PMI would describe my fan styles as fusion with flamenco and Chinese fans. Have studied and researched both :)

Fri, April 4, 2008 - 10:46 AMKalilah has been performing with fans for a while...the last time was last weekend. If I were interested in fanwork, I would be completely confident with her as my instructor.

Re: Taking a poll...
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 9:00 AMWell even though I want to start teaching fan fusion, I would still be interested in learning what Kalila knows about fans.
It is my belief that we never stop learning, and can learn a lot from each other. :)
We should tawk lady!!! -

Re: Taking a poll...
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 6:49 PMCool - thanks for answering my questions. Yup, I'm extremely anal retentive and I do ask a lot of questions 'cuz I really want to know what to expect. Personally, I have no problem taking classes from others who themselves have only started learning themselves. But I just like to know this up front. And what would be cool is a joint Kalila/Zuza workshop to show the contrasts between all the different styles of fan and suggestions for interesting ways to fuse these styles. So yes, I would be interested in learning fan - tawk amongst yourselves. -

Re: Taking a poll...
Sat, April 5, 2008 - 8:54 AMWhile individual workshops or classes with Kalila or Zuza would be very cool, I think a joint workshop or class would be incredibly difficult to coordinate. I've seen both ladies dance beautifully with fans over the past year or so, and I believe each of them is qualified to lead an effective class or workshop on her own. -

Re: Taking a poll...
Sat, April 5, 2008 - 6:24 PMI would agree - it definitely seems as though each would be perfectly qualified to lead a workshop on her own.
As for coordinating a joint workshop, I would never presume to say it would be difficult or easy. First, since I have no fan dance background, I don't know what goes into the dance itself. Second, without a working knowledge of the different styles, I would have no idea if a joint workshop is feasible or desirable. Only Kalila and Zuza can decide this.
Obviously with different styles, two different workshops could easily be presented, and I would (time and money being available) attend both workshops. But depending on how it is presented, a "joint" workshop could be fun as well.
