Info on contributions, dancing, and helping out.

1. Pledges:

Help keep our oasis from drying up! We need your help to support the annual bellydance party. Join the 30 by 20 campaign! We are looking for 30 people to donate $20 each to keep the party going. Of the 3 benefactors that we had last year funding the bulk of the party, 2 are currently unemployed.

If you have enjoyed Midnight at the Oasis in the past, and would like to see it continue, please consider making a contribution. You can pledge by sending me a PM, and slip me a $20 the next time you see me. Alternately, you can pay via PayPal, though we need to add a slight handling fee. (We need to still have $20 left over when PayPal is done with us.)

Pledges need to be received by June 15th.

Alternately, if you'd like to help out by supplying water and/or snacks for our oasis, food and drink donations are also welcome.

2. Dancing:

Would you like to come and perform Fourth of July Weekend? If you're reading this post, you're probably already familiar with what Midnight at the Oasis and what we do, but a few points of note:

* Timeslots are 15 minutes each, though duets and larger may choose to take a full half hour show.

* Shorter slots are fine, especially for new performers. Just let me know how long you're interested in performing.

* Shows will run on the hour, 8PM to 1AM, Friday, and Saturday on 4th of July weekend.

Shoot me a private message or email with your details.

3. Other help:

We could also use help with the following positions. Let me know what you're interested in, and for which night:

* Emcee

* Stage manager and music

* Zillers to announce shows

If you're interested in trying belly dance for the first time, or if you've been dancing a while and you're interested in working on the muscular approach to belly dance that's so popular with the Tribal Fusion girls, or even if you're just interested in a fun workout, come check it out!

It's still a couple of months away, but I want to plan a birthday party for myself and invite my friends. Problem is that my B-day is over Thanksgiving weekend so I was wondering if there'll be enough people in town to even have my party that weekend (my actual B-day is the Sat. of Thanksgiving weekend), or if I should have it the weekend before or after. So if you're interersted in attending my party, let me know if you plan on being in town over Thanksgiving (or would be back in town by that Sat. night), or if you would be more likely to make it the weekend before or after. Thanks!

This is extremely cool because this is a non-bellydance show. John Munger curates the series and has a different theme for each show. The them this time is “anything but ballet and modern”. The lineup includes a broad variety of stuff including some tap, Norwegian dancing, and Butoh. It should be a very enjoyable show, as John prides himself on pulling together shows highlighting “accessible dance” that can appeal to people other than dance geeks.
It would be great to see a big audience! Please come if you can. Info can be found here:

So I've heard people talk about what a fantastic community that bellydance has. It's wonderfully supportive. You can almost get instant friendships when you start dancing. People show up to events all the time, simply because they are bellydance events. Most people are generally supportive of other people's work. It's a very body-positive group, where many women are able to finally deal with not having the perfect

But I've also heard the term "bellydance ghetto". We're forced together because the GP and the larger dance world don't see what we do as "legitimate dance". While bellydance certainly gains in popularity due to things like the Bellydance Superstars, it's still a fringe thing where you have to go to it to enjoy it, rather than truly having mass appeal and availability. Many people still don't distinguish belly from pole, and ostracize accordingly.

My (albeit unscientific) observations of attendance at our recent Fringe show got me thinking about this topic. What's your opinion? Which one really applies? Whichever opinion you hold, the separateness is undeniable. Is the current situation a good thing?

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

The creative mindset behind this idea, BBBD Meghan, asked BBBD Kamala Devi to chair this project, and with the help of some very motivated BBBD sisters, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from other BBBD sisters for the BBBD 2008 Calendar!

Please read all the information carefully and follow the instructions. If you have any questions, please send a Tribe PM to Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi.

The deadline for your application is July 31, 2008.

We are all looking forward to this project and are eager to see how the calendar turns out. We hope that this is successful enough to become an annual calendar.
I wanted to get the word out about a dance opportunity this fall.

The event is called “Celebration of Women” and is sponsored by ChandraDevi (they have a tribe here). ChandraDevi is based in Wausau, WI, and the event raises money for the Women’s Community Center of Wausau.

Val, Cindy, Charlie and I performed last year and had a blast! We met some wonderful women so we are really hoping to get more Twin Cities interest (and representation) this year; the date of the event is Sat. Oct. 13. Because it is in the evening, this would be an overnight in Wausau.

If you’re interested, go on over to the ChandraDevi tribe and check them out and you can get more event details.

www.bgirlbe.com to get the event schedule for the weekend.

B-Girl Be is an annual summit and series of events, workshops, exhibits, and performances celebrating women in hip-hop. The mission of BGB is to influence and inspire leadership to change the perceptions and roles of women in hip-hop for current and future generations. We need to change the landscape of what we know is wrong with hip-hop and replace it with positive options that make sense for young and old alike.

Yesterday, I went to Djinn's swap. (A great time, btw. Thanks!) Among other things, I picked up a Glitterati Bag of Eye Kandy. (For the un-initiated, Eye Kandy is the glitter makeup for which the lovely Ms. Selah has become a distributor. The particular package that I got allows for two glitter colors and the other basic accoutrements for applying it. And for those same uninitiated, she's also got a Glitter Whore option. I think it's buy 4, get one free.)

So I got two colors. One color, Toffee, I had to order. It will go well with my normal brown eye makeup. The other color that I got is Rachel's (as in Brice) Rooster Tail. It's black with bits of green and blue mixed in (among others). This color, I picked up with my daughter in mind. She wears lots of blues and greens. The trick, though, is that she doesn't perform much, so she won't wear it that often. By getting a color with the black mixed in, I could wear it too, on one of those weird occasions when I wear darker, goth-ish makeup. Y'see, my big secret when it comes to my daughter and bellydance, is that I like to spoil her, but not look like I'm spoiling her. So we frequently get stuff that we can share, so she gets what she wants, but she doesn't get a huge pile of stuff that sits unused. (This approach helps keep her father happier, too. ;D ) So I had this great glitter stuff in a color that I don't wear very often in amongst my spoils from the swap.

Fast forward a few hours. I was getting ready to perform at Ball's Cabaret as a promo for our show at Patrick's next week. I had decided Friday (yes, the day before) to do a new goth piece. When putting my makeup on, I went with dark blues, purples, and greens instead of the regular glam/cab makeup. I decided to try the new glitter. I carefully applied the shadow, liner, and mascara. Then, I added the glitter. Never having applied the stuff before, I was prepared to screw it up and have to redo everything. But it went on perfectly. It was a really fun look!

I got to Balls. When it was my turn to perform, I went up and started chatting with Leslie Ball, the MC, as she does with every performer. She asks about your other upcoming performances and gives you the chance to plug them. She gives your history with her cabaret. (I've performed there before.) And she usually just chats a bit more. In my case, she commented on my glittering eyes. She loved them! I mentioned that it was my new toy, as we finished our conversation, and struck my pose.

And I danced my heart out. Keep in mind that this was a number that I started working on the day before, and it was 12:15 in the morning for a pretty physically intensive number. But I ran with it. And I got quite the applause when I was done. I even got a, "Wow! That was awesome!" on my way back to my seat.

At the end of the show, there are always Dove chocolates in the lobby for everyone to partake. I grabbed my usual dark chocolate, and pounded through it. I didn't get the chance to read the "promise" on the inside of the label before it got ripped and crumpled because I was chatting with a couple of other audience members who wanted to talk with me about my performance. *glows* Before leaving, I thought I'd grab one more dark chocolate. This time, I got to actually read it. It said, "Add a twinkle to your eye." Apparently, Ms. Selah and I were meant to do more business.... :D

If you are interested, please send me a PM. Dancers for the show must be Cassandra School level 3 or higher. Dancers must also be available for weekly rehearsals on Sunday afternoons. There will be additional rehearsals closer to the show. Apprentices would participate in additional performances. Guest dancers would be commiting their time through the show only.
In addition, CONVergence is not too far off (July). Note that dancers of all levels are welcome. In fact, we traditionally have at least a few people doing their first solo. If you are interested in dancing at our Midnight at the Oasis party or helping out in another capacity (town cryer, running music for performances, etc.), let me know. I'd be happy to add you to our informational mailing list.

Hi All,

As Klee mentioned I'm looking at putting together some short and fun bio's of the troup members for the website. These bio's will be about 3-5 sentances in length. To do so though I need some information from you all. If you could please e-mail either through tribe or at my private e-mail address the following things I'd be greatful. I'm looking for interesting tidbits on you all. I'll give you some starting points and let your creativity take you by storm. Hopefully I'll be able to write some quirky stuff for you all.

Need:
Dance name
How long have you been dancing

Some of the following:
What's your preferred style? Oreintal, ATS, fusion, funk, ...
Stupid human tricks: Touch your toungue to your nose, sword, zills, cane , the robot, back flips while shimmying?
Your inspiration: Rachel Brice, Boy George, me?
Why you started dancing? On a dare, to shake it like a poalirode picture, to connect to the femine divine
Any secrets you're willing to share: You like dancing for your cat best of all, most of your drill work happens in the shower?
Any special performence venues: Mostly midwest, have you travelled? Mars Con?
Who've you studied under
Cross Training: Do you take Jazz, Flamenco, Hip Hop, Kung Fu let me know
Other troups you belong to?

Any other things you can think of feel free to include. Please try to get these to my by Sunday the 21st.

Thanks,

I am very pleased to announce that I have signed on as Eye Kandy's first (and currently only) Midwestern distributor! That's right - we've got glitter for days, grrls - here and now and no shipping fees! :-)

When the stuff arrived, I was truly blown away by how beautiful it was ... in every breathtaking color of the rainbow and in mixes both subtle and bold. I think a part of me expected it to be ... well, cheap, cheesey ... chunky even. And it's SO NOT ... it's gorgeous - absolutely gorgeous. For those of you who already use it, I am a now a believer (thanks for the push); for those of you who currently don't, you are going to LOVE IT.

Here is the basic color chart from Rom Deussen's website: www.romdeussen.com/files/eyekandy2.jpg

The color is a little light when viewed online, but it's very close. I have the individual glitters (liners and sugars) listed below, bottles of adhesives, and kits that contain a bottle of the adhesive, glitter, and an application brush:

Yellin Melon
Confetti
Cherry Bomb
Icing
Candy Apple
Black Bart
Sour Apple
Sugar Cane
Sugar Plum
Chiclets
Candy Coin
Ginger Snap
Jawbreaker
Gumdrop
Taffy
Hard Candy
Gumball
Caramel Apple

I am also getting a lot of 5 of "Rachel's Rooster Tail" in the next week - Eye Kandy's first celebrity custom mix prepared for Rachel Brice (with proceeds going to her favorite charity). More celebrity mixes are forthcoming for: the Bellydance Superstars, Princess Farhana, Jim Boz, Zaina Hart, Zoe Jakes, and Sharon Kihara ... among others.

Consider a custom color mix for your troupe, group, or tribe. Those can be mixed for you as a custom order, or I can help you get the supplies you need to mix your own blends (a generally more economical option). I'll keep the "recipe" of your mix on file so that you can easily have more made and to ensure it's not exactly duplicated by any other local dancer(s) ... that I'M in contact with, anyway. :-)

Let me answer the three most common questions about Eye Kandy right here and now:
1. The adhesive is water-based and will not irritate the skin or the eyes of most people; it is fine for contact users.
2. The sprinkles/liners are not metal or mica (shell); they are polyester/plastic and will not irritate the skin or the eyes of most people; they are fine for contact users.
3. The difference between sprinkles/liners and sugars is the grind of glitter; sugars are not good for liners - they do not offer good, solid line coverage. They are meant to be applied as a dusting to skin and blush and existing shadow; they can also be added to oils and cream moisturizers for all-over body shimmer.

Eye Kandy is a whole lotta glam for a little bit of money; it's a terrific addition to your everyday make-up (when you just want a tiny bit of pizzazz) or BIG BLING for a dramatic evening or performance look. Best of all, my friends: it's here in time for the holidays and the new year!

If you have any questions, please send me a message on Tribe or to selah@mischievousdjinn.com. Sparkle on!

That said, we need to get moving on ordering costumes, as it will take at least a month to get the pieces. You've seen the dresses. We'll order those in your primary color in luxury velvet, with the drape sleeves. For bra and belt, we'll be going with gold. I could not find a single option that would cover everyone's secondary color. If you want, we can order matching headbands. These provide a bit more friction for balancing things on your head, but I'll leave it up to you. Tops will be the banded dance bra in the metallic holographic fabric in gold on black:
http://lrosedesigns.com/products/tops-bra.html

Belts will likely be these in black and gold:

May have to go with these in gold if L. Rose doesn't have enough of the gold on black fabric and we need to do gold on gold:
http://dahlal.com/default.aspx?n=1&c=8&s1=1134&s2=1134
Does anyone already have either of these scarves in gold?

Also, I know that two people do not have beaded canes yet. Of those of you who already have beaded canes, who does not have a gold one?

We will get a discount on all of it, but the exact amount might vary, based on volume.

Also, if anyone has an addtional piece that you want to order from either source, let me know.

I have an event idea – a dance make-up party! We arrange for a space to meet (which I am willing to do since I brought up the idea), bring our make-up supplies and help teach each other make-up tips. For example, if you’ve seen someone’s eye make-up and you just love it and want to learn how she does it, if that person attends the event, you’d have the chance to ask her. I’ve had a lot of people who ask me how I do my make-up and I just never really have the time to fully explain it. But if you’ve seen me, I really like to go all-out.
In fact what we could do is break into small groups for part of the event – Lips, Eyes, Facial Decorations (bindis, facial jewelry), make-up we like (I know there are a lot of MAC lovers out there!), make-up to avoid, anything else you can think of!! Hey, nothing is set in stone, just tossing out ideas.

This is not about how to apply make-up necessarily, unless you need help (I know many who do not wear make up so if this appeals to you, we could do this, too). Just wanted to get the idea out and get feedback. Let me know if this appeals to you.

If anyone wants to, feel free to email me directly as well, at <debrazil69@comcast.net>.

Thanks!

Here are a couple of examples of costumes for Veil Rain. Please note that you are not limited to a 1/2 shirt for a top. A full shirt, 1/2 shirt, choli bra, whatever are all fine.
http://www.basimahkamar.com/images/twotone.jpg

For the medley, here is the link to the professional costume.
http://audrena.com/AudrenasCostumesMermaidCostume.html

For the other costume for the same number, I'm currently thinking of the following. Please feel free to offer opinions.

Bra and belt in secondary color:
http://dahlal.com/default.aspx?n=1&c=1&s1=1151&s2=0

Skirt with one slit and u-top with short sleeves in primary color nylon spandex:
http://lrosedesigns.com/products/skirts-straight.html
http://lrosedesigns.com/products/tops-utop.html

For the cane number, these dresses in primary color with slightly different sleeves:
http://lrosedesigns.com/products/dresses-beledi.html

I'm still debating the bra and belt. We could potentially wear the same bra and belt as the secondary costume for the medley. Another possibility is a dance bra and sash in secondary color, like the ones show in the picture of the dress.

For the belly hop number, I think Lesley is looking at some of the stuff that she's vending, and we might make corset belts to go with, though I will let her comment.

The Jordanian virtuoso oud player Sakher Hattar will perform classical and folkloric Arab music with the accompaniment of Crossing Borders at the Cedar Cultural Center on Sunday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m. They will be celebrating the release of Sakher’s new CD “The Passionate Voice Of The Oud”.

Sakher Hattar is among the most significant Arab musicians of his generation. He was awarded first place at the International Competition for Oud in Cairo,1993. He displays intense musical skill and passion while performing rarely heard makams (modes) such as masri ballady in which all but one of the notes are quarter tones. Sakher creates a sensual sound that will fulfill the traditional Arab
music listener’s expectation of tarab, (intense listening pleasure).

Crossing Borders is a collective of Arab and American musicians whose love and deep respect for Arab classical and folkloric music brings them together to perform this beautiful musical genre seldom heard in this part of the world. They individually and together perform many styles of world and American music. Crossing Borders members include Mick Labriola & Tim O'Keefe on percussion,
Salah Fattah, Laura Harada, Kim Salisbury & David Stenshoel on violin, David Burke on bass, Greg Membrez on oud and Russell Packard on ney.

Mick Labriola is a skillful and expressive percussionist best known for his work with the Maroons, Voices of the Sepharad, The Ensemble Espanol of Chicago and Ancestor Energy. Tim O’Keefe’s mastery as a percussionist of many genres has earned him the honor of accompanying Nikki Stavrou, Siwan Perwar and Simon Shaheen. Tim is featured on Sakher’s solo CD. Salah Fattah’s violin brings an
authentic voice to the ensemble with his Egyptian heritage and long history of study and performance. Laura Harada recently toured the US and performed at Carnegie Hall with Youssou N'dour and Fathy Salama's Cairo Orchestra. Kim Salisbury has stirred the emotions of many while performing with Ethnic Dance Theatre, Tessera, Robayat and the Electric Arab Orchestra. David Stenshoel is a driving force of ethnic music in the Twin Cities and is renown for his exuberant performances with Boiled In Lead. David Burke & Greg Membrez are the most recent additions to this collective of musicians. David is the bass player from Out of Africa and Greg is a student of the oud best known for his Duke Ellington Project and performances at the Dakota. The director of Crossing Borders, Russell Packard, was recently honored with an invitation back to the Jerash Festival in Jordan, to perform in concert on this years’ featured instrument the ney, Middle Eastern flute.

Crossing Borders seeks to counter xenophobia by presenting the beauty of world music in concert. They first recorded Arab music in 1990 to raise funds for the Minnesota Peace Coalition’s efforts to stop the war on Iraq, to aid the Minnesota Palestinian Solidarity Committee and later to provide relief funds for Iraqi war victims. Crossing Borders members have since made numerous recordings and have toured in the Mideast twice. They were the first U.S. band invited to perform at the Palestinian International Festival in Bethlehem and Bir Zeit. Their presentation of Palestinian liberation songs and other international music earned them much recognition throughout the Mideast.

This concert is sponsored by KFAI Radio "Radio Without Boundaries" (90.3/106.7FM) Funds will be collected for the Lebanese relief effort through CD sales and donation.

The Cedar Cultural Center is committed to presenting the world's finest traditional performing artists. The Cedar is noted for the breadth of its programming, which features everything from American folk and blues to world beat and eclectic ethnic music, as well as for the unmatched quality of the many artists who grace its stage. Located at 416 Cedar Ave in South Minneapolis.

Tickets are $20 at the door and $18 in advance and are available at 612-338-2674 ext 2, online through Ticketweb and at many Cedar outlets.
