So I performed over the weekend with my fans and right when I snap them open a stave snapped on my right fan (the outter most stave). Shoot, the show went on and no one noticed but has anyone else broke a stave like that? If so how do you fix it up? Ive got some ideas but if someone has experience Id love to know!! by the way, they are plastic.

Chinese Fan Dance Videos

Hi everyone! I thought it would be great to post some of my favorite chinese videos (my latest inspiration).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAT9noEoSDI (by Wang Yabin)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gJo2LLYYk0
These are the same performance by different dancers. I love them both because you can see where each dancer's strengths lie.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fA5SoIGHVw0 (Double Fans)
Suuuuper happy (the music gets slightly annoying, though).

On another note, I've been consistently approached for the past 2 years about creating an instructional video fusing fans with bellydance and am thinking it's time to look into this. If anyone has thoughts on videographers, funding, and content, I'd love to hear them!

....that moment we've all been waiting for.....
Pharos Live!
There are still tickets available to both the workshops and the show, available at www.trashcityentertainment.com.
Here are my workshops and what you can expect:

Saturday, June 14th, Precision Flow: Stop on a Dime, Bend Space and Time
We'll start with 5-10 minutes of pilates to wake up the muscles and strengthen your legs, arms, and core. Then, we'll jump right into drills that will help with the locks in the combinations. The first combination is called the Triberet Combo and will include challenging moves such as my signature "slide-lock", sidewinders, and my "undulation rewind" mixed with some super slow hip circles and articulated hip drop kicks. The second combo is the Motorcycle Combo, and is the most challenging part of the workshop. You'll combine half Mayas, chest cresents, and undulations into incredibly fast small combinations that suddenly stop and ooze into slow chest rotations. At the end of the 1.5 hrs, we'll stretch and cool your muscles with 5-10 minutes of yoga to help prepare you for the rest of your fun, workshop-filled day! Hopefully, we can get to everything!

Double Fan Fusion (of course!):
We'll start with 5-10 minutes of pilates to wake up the muscles and strengthen your legs, arms, and core. Then, how to hold your fans and open/close them. We'll drill simple fan movements in a slinky, sassy traveling move. Then, we'll work on layering fans with some classic bellydance moves, both stationary and traveling. We'll combine our layers into chort combos such as the Damsel Combo (inspired by Rachel Lazarus Soto) and The Setting Sun (and others!). All of these will then be combined into one huge combo. At the end of the 1.5 hrs, we'll stretch and cool your muscles with 5-10 minutes of yoga to help prepare you for the rest of your fun, workshop-filled day!

I can't wait!!!!

These are a custom order from China that were supposed to be Chinese Fans, not fan VEILS. They are absolutely gorgeous, but I have no use for them. I am listing this to see if there is serious interest in them, as it will be a huge hassle to send them back to China.
One pair is yellow fading to red:
The other pair is white fading to orange-gold:
Each pair is $60 + shipping. If anyone is "ready-to-buy" interested, please let me know. Otherwise, I need to start the process of contacting them to send them back.
These were supposed to be my custom fans for the Pharos Live! Show....I am so upset.....

Hi ya'll! We're still working out the details, but I will be in Richmond, VA on July 20th (that's a Sunday!), to give a double fan workshop. Due to my insanely busy schedule this summer, I will be accepting fan pre-orders for this workshop only through May 18th (that's the same cutoff date as the Pharos Live! workshops). Here's the thread on how to order: http://tribes.tribe.net/bastet/thread/c8f0b599-7355-40f1-9d0d-9296b82f17f8.
I will order extras, so don't fret!

Southern Oasis Workshops!

Alchemy proudly presents….
Southern Oasis 2008 Workshops!

Saturday, March 8

Denys Proteau: At Southern Oasis 2008 Denys will run a general introductory hand drumming class. Participants may
also bring other percussion instruments such as tambourine, clave, zills, wooden spoons, etc. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring audio recording gadgets such as tape recorders, mp3 recorders, dictating recorders, or waxed cylinder recorders. Printed handouts will be available. We'll play a variety of listening and rhythm learning games, as well learn and practice new rhythms. Denys will offer his workshop on Saturday, March 8th from 10AM-12noon. Location: Joanie Lamb Hair Salon 720 Broad St Augusta, GA

Darbuka Dave: The Basics of Working With Dancers - We will cover the universal ways of communicating with dancers, useful for both choreographed and improvised performance. The class is suitable for all students who have at least a basic knowledge of technique, and beginners should expect to be challenged by the quick pace of the class. Dave will offer his workshop on Saturday, March 8th from 1230PM-230PM. Location: Joanie Lamb Hair Salon 720 Broad St Augusta, GA

Natalie Brown: Delirium Tribal improv combos. Move, trade places, turn, pose with Delirium Tribal's signature improvisational moves. Use in choreographies or your own brand of tribal improv. Natalie will offer her workshop on Saturday, March 8th from 10AM-12noon. Location: Augusta Fencing Club 134 9th St GA

Ashley Bennett: This workshop will be focused, primarily, on stage presence and fluid motion - with a concentration on arm and hand movements. A certified yoga instructor, Ashley typically begins and ends each workshop with enough yoga to warm up the body to support flexibility, and then slow it down again to prevent aching and soreness for the "morning after." Ashley will offer her workshop on Saturday, March 8th from 1230PM-230PM. Location: Augusta Fencing Club 134 9th St Augusta, GA.

Alchemy: In this workshop, the emphasis will be on floorwork: toning and building the muscles necessary for safe, strong, and controlled floorwork, introducing new movement to your repertoire, and learning how to incorporate floorwork into improvisational performances for the solo or group dynamic. We will also cover the "no-nos", what to consider to keep your floorwork from devolving into a peep show, and how to comport yourself to best display your strength and mastery to the audience. All of this will be presented in the same lighthearted, safe, accepting atmosphere Alchemy is known for in its classes. So, come prepared for a workout, great information, but most of all come with questions and a smile! All levels welcome! Please bring knees pads or a yoga mat. Alchemy will offer their workshop on Saturday, March 8th from 230PM-430PM. Location: Augusta Fencing Club 134 9th St Augusta, GA

Sunday March 9
Ashwathy Nair and Michael Bartenfeld: Members of the UGA Bhangra Team, Bulldawg da Raaj, they will be teaching their signature style. They will be offering their workshop on Sunday, March 9th from 10AM-12noon. Location: Augusta Fencing Club 134 9th St Augusta, GA

Lauren Prince: African Dance Workshop-Come and take part in this foot-tapping, arm-swinging, hair flying workshop! This African Dance workshop will surely move your feet and make you sweat! Many of the dances are from West Africa and therefore has very fast and energetic beats. This workshop will teach the basics of West African dance but it will definitely give a good and high-energy workout. Following the teaching of the basics, will be choreography. The choreography consists of dance moves that are warrior moves and moves to welcome in peace, fertility, and happiness. Be prepared to let yourself go! Experience the high-energy and fast rhythms that'll make you want to go to the motherland. Lauren will offer her workshop on Sunday, March 91 from 1230PM-230PM. Location: Augusta Fencing Club 134 9th St Augusta, GA

Barbara Shine: The basics of international folk dancing will be taught along with some energetic and fun dances from Israel, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania and will include a variety of tempo and style. The dances taught will be those very well known by most international groups in the US. Bring clean, soft-soled shoes with support (recommended) for this lively session. Barbara will offer her workshop on Sunday, March 9th from 230PM-430PM. Location: Augusta Fencing Club 134 9th St Augusta, GA

...any way you like! (But here are some tips....)
In all cases, wear the falls as high on your head as possible (looks more natural). I flip my head over, comb out my hair (as if I were trying to create the "I dream of genie" high ponytail). Then use both falls (at the same time) as if they were a normal ponytail holder and twist them in. Flip back over your head and Viola! You look amazing (or at least more amazing than a few moments ago!)
Here are some faves:
1. The one I just described. ;-)
2. Since I give you two, you can wear them as high pigtails.
3. While in pigtails, take the top half of each and twist into a bun (So you have half in a bun and half down).
4. The same, but with the single ponytail.
5. Braid them.
6. The sky is the limit! Have fun!

AZ Drum and Dance: The best "traditional" West African drum and dance ensemble in the southwest (if not at large), held workshops at Pharos? These people will turn your shit white! You belly dancers will totally get schooled. So...

What if AZ Drum and Dance were to hold a djembe class at Pharos? What if AZ drum and Dance were to hold an African dance class for belly dancers (to broaden your horizons and expand your reportoire) at Pharos? What if?

Would you be interested?

Let me know quickly and I will confirm the "yay or nay" by next Saturday (added workshops).

Pharos! Get involved! Learn! See!

Hi all!
I'm going to try to become more active here (but.....it's the 1st semester of my PhD and all....), so here's the first thing.
Reyna of the Rising Sun Tribe put a clip of my performance up on youtube. I have it up in my profile for anyone who is curious about my current brand of fan dancing. It's only a minute out of the whole performance, but highlights some cool fan moves.
Enjoy, please critique, and ask questions!

Here are a few reminders on the combos and a list of layered movements. If you have any questions about individual moves, post them here and I'll do my best to articulate the move.
Layered Moves:
Rise Undulation
Arabic 3 Fan
Swirl Turn
Zoe
Combos:
Note: Upon reflection, I almost always include a “breathe” motion as part of my transition from one move or combo to the next.

Fan Drill Combo:
1.	Walking forward, snap both fans at sides down to open (audience sees line of fan).
2.	Continue, and close, arms in same position.
3.	Continue, snap open down at sides (audience sees full open fan).
4.	Continue, turn fans in, cross them over, bring up, and down.
5.	Close fans.

The Damsel Combo:
1. Open both fans to the left side of body, covering face (left hip is pushed out to the side)
2. Slowly open fans to reveal face
3. Walk forward with upper body undulations 4x while slowly pulling fans away from face
4. Stand still--4x Mayas w/ arms coming down~straight at hip level
5. flip fans over to face inward
(can transition easily into Arabic 3 fan)

The fabulous Old World Imports in Albuquerque, NM is hosting two short workshops on Sunday, December 9th at the Orpheum Arts Space. The first workshop is on drumming technique and the second will be on fan fusion dancing, taught by yours truly! I have a limited number of fans available for purchase and will have only a few available to borrow for the workshop. The 1.5hr workshops are $25 each. You can register by contacting Flo of the Rogue Bindis, registering at Old World Imports on Central Ave in Albuquerque, or you can register the day of the workshop.
The 2nd Annual Holiday Halfa will be that night, also at the Orpheum Arts Space and will feature local vendors, musicians, and dancers. The holidays are here and there will be incredible goodies for that special bellydancer--or yourself!
Please see the flier in the photo album for more info.

Sideshow Acts and Experimental Bellydance

Have you had a vision for an off-the wall, out of the box (and your comfort zone) performance but have never had the venue or audience for it? Here's your chance to do something....different. We are encouraging Halloween-themed performances, sideshow acts, and poi-though the poi must be non-fire only-glow balls, etc. (I'm sure there are many more unusual acts-let us know!). This is a show for non-traditional bellydance and "other" acts.
We have many slots available for performers interested in improv to live music. Limited slots are available to performers using a CD. Please e-mail Bastet at bastetfusion@gmail.com for a performance slot.
Show is at Hunab Hooka in Albuquerque, NM on Thursday, Nov.1st at 7pm. Doors open (and performer check-in) is at 6pm.

Choreograph a Fan Dance: 11 Creative Ideas

by Ramona (article from www.DynamicBellyDance.com)

Fans are a popular accessory for dancers in many cultures. Native American Indians use hand-held feather fans decorated with colorful beaded handles for dances. In the Spanish art of flamenco, large folding fans accentuate the dancer’s dramatic movements. Fans are a fun accessory for belly dancers, who use feather fans or folding fans, depending upon the dance style. The rich history of the fan can inspire you to create your own unique fan dance.

History of the fan

Fans have a long history around the world. The Pharaohs used as fans as cooling instruments, status symbols and decorative items. They consisted of ostrich feathers attached to the tops of long poles, and were used for fanning the royals and for ceremonial processions.

In China, feather fans appeared 2,000 years ago; the folding fan (topped with paper or fabric) was invented in Japan in the 8th century. The fan became an art form in Asia, due to the beautiful paintings used as decoration. Round fans were especially popular with ladies.

In Europe and the United States, ladies fans came to peak of popularity during the 1600-1800’s as a fashion accessory and cooling instrument. Ladies used gestures with the fan (the “Language Of The Fan”) for flirting and giving covert messages to gentlemen. Fans were richly decorated, sometimes with paintings on silk fabric, lace accents, and ribs made of mother of pearl.

Choosing a fan

Modern folding fans come in many styles, and are made with ribs of wood or plastic topped with fabric, colored paper, or feathers. Some have lovely painted designs or embroidery. In belly dancing and flamenco, wooden-ribbed fans are preferable to plastic fans because they open and close most easily. New fans may be stiff at first and need to be opened and closed a number of times to break them in.

Non-folding fans have a firm base that is covered in fabric and topped with feathers. You can make your own by gluing craft sticks together in a fan shape, creating a handle, covering with fabric, and attaching plumes.

Movement ideas for creating your own fan dance:

1. Google for “Language of the Fan” and act out a story using this language.

2. Open the folding fan using one or both hands, or flick it open for dramatic effect.

3. Play peek-a-boo with the fan, concealing and revealing one or both eyes.

4. Put your hands behind your back; fan your back as you walk in a circular pattern.

5. Hold the fan out to your side and walk around the fan as you hold it (space hold technique).

6. Holding fan over your heart, look at your right shoulder, gently pulsing the shoulder forward.

7. Hold the fan like a veil, covering the nose and lower part of the face.

8. Scoop the air with the fan, creating loops, circles, or figure 8's in the air.

9. Turn with the fan, showing the fan's design to the audience.

10. Hold the fan over your head with one or both hands, and do a box step.

11. Go to YouTube.com and search for “Fan dances” for ideas from around the world.

With you so far away, I'm guess we won't be having frequent workshops and all that but now that I've had a little taste, I want to learn more!

So... do you have any resorce suggestions? Hmmmm?

By the way, the upstate belly community won't be the same without you! We're losing one of our best and most exciting dancers to NM. We will miss you!

Life will be moving at break-neck speed in the next few months for me. Next week, I'm heading up to Boone, NC to teach for Duke University TIP. With the exception of a 4-day break in early July, I'll be there until July 29th.
Then....the BIG MOVE. On August 1st, my husband and I are off to the southwestern US so I can start my PhD in Albuquerque, NM while my husband starts a pre-doctoral fellowship through the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Things are definitely going to be crazy for a while, but we're both really excited! Please be patient if it takes me a little while to get back to you! Thanks for all your support!

The BIG Combo:

1.	Arms in ATS position at hips, lead with chest, arms stay. As undulation rounds to back-down, arms flow up (framing belly) in same way as a framing snake arm move. Continue, each time, arms moving slightly farther out and up (follow the leader if in a group or specify height stops during rehearsals!).
2.	When finally bringing arms to “ATS height”, right arm moves out-up-right (drop those shoulders!). Left arm moves out “straight” left. Open fans inward together body dropping to left slightly – I always include a cue of raising arms slightly, then opening fans by dropping arms slightly (steps 1 and 2 take 4 counts in 4/4 time)
3.	4 mayas, fans pulling away to reveal face
4.	Damsel combo: 4x body waves forward, 4x mayas while bringing fans down (stationary)
5.	Pull up fans (facing down)
6.	2x Arabic Fan 3’s: (for those of you looking, I raise my shoulders slightly when I start)
7.	2x Arabic Fan 3’s w/ right shoulder dropped and head turned to right
8.	2x Cross 360’s
9.	Pose before transition to Zoe Corkscrew
10.	Zoe Corkscrew down, then both fans come up from behind into volcano pose and turn fans in.
11.	Floreo right fan to shoulder height, pause, repeat on left, pause.
12.	Swirl turn 4x, close fans down at finish (sometimes this doesn’t work with the music, so omit when necessary)
13.	Fan drill 2x
14.	Rinse and Repeat entire sequence as needed!

Alternate beginning (to step 3): pull fans all the way up to volcano pose, open inward and bring down, either framing or covering face.

Hello ladies (and gents, mabye?)
If you don't have some already, you'll need 2 fans for the first ever "ATS" Fan Workshop on April 7th in Columbia, SC and for the Fan Basics Workshop in Greenville, SC on April 26th.
Here are your ordering options:
Tai Chi Fans: Red w/ red translucent slats (made for right and left hand!): $15/pair
Black Dragon Fans: $10/pair
Black ribbed fans in Red, Yellow, Hot pink, Fushia, Black, Royal Blue: $20/pair

I will post pictures of each style of fan (and hopefully all the color options, too) into the photos section of this tribe in a day or two.

To order: 1) Go to www.paypal.com, send money to eve6570@hotmail.com, indicate your name, e-mail address, phone #, which workshop you are attending (the date), and fan style/color in the notes section. I will send you a confirmation e-mail once received.
2) Your fans will be given to you at the workshop to save you shipping costs.
See you all soon!

If I run out of a color or style, I will post it here! Stay tuned!
