Job availability--question from a prospective beadmaker and/or jeweler

Well, hello.

I figured that maybe here would be a good place to ask about the availability of--in some way making money--for a prospective glass artist, whether that is by distributing my projects or pieces to stores or going into business for myself and selling on the web and at conventions, etc. (I have absolutely no background in Business, but if it will further my art, I can see myself attempting it.)

What initiated this:
I started a fairly basic bead weaving project the other day (a 2-drop peyote stitch collar; nearly finished it now), and then remembered how much I enjoyed it, and oddly enough didn't find it tiresome (I stopped bead weaving a while ago because of the difficulty [as I was a beginner and didn't know the potential of the medium, though I find now that if I am to become an advanced jeweler working in the medium of beads, I will *need* expertise at weaves]).

I found a satisfaction in actually creating a tangible and smooth product for my efforts--this prompted me to search for beading communities on Tribe. I found a post about upcoming bead conventions and took a look at a section of the presenters for one, which included many websites of glass artists who specialize in beads. (I stayed up all last night looking at only a fraction of the sites.) This kind of tipped me off that I might want to work with glass myself, once seeing what could be done with the medium. (This way, if I decided to become a jeweler, I would not be limited to ready-made components.)

However, before I get into it and start taking classes in glasswork and/or jeweling, I'd like to know how the job market is for this, and the best place to find that is from people in the field. I'm pretty sure that I want to go into some kind of art--right now, I'm just scoping out which medium. I'm in a career and life planning class at the moment...and in one of my tests, I scored what was basically "extremely extremely compatible" with the vocation of an artist. And I am looking right now for a vocation or trade that I will enjoy and love doing, enough to become very skilled, for the rest of my life. I don't really want to be stuck in having to make myself conform to who some corporation wants me to be.

I'm thinking that if I am to be going into glass art, it would be good for me to take some color and design, and probably sculpture classes, as my next step. Possibly chemistry, again--if I wanted to, say, make my own canes, or do dichroic glass, or anything having to do with chemical and heat interactions.

My only experience working with molten glass so far has been to manipulate Pyrex tubing in high school over a Bunsen burner. In high school, I loved chemistry--but I went the Humanities track in college instead of the hard sciences. In college I majored in Creative Writing--another of my passions--but basically avoided art classes (though I have plenty of raw talent in it) because I didn't think I'd be able to get a job in the field. Basically, I suppose, I was rushing--and I hadn't fully assessed what my loves were--and I was afraid.

Well, now I've graduated with a BA, in something that I can't easily make regular money doing (I did not know this when I began)--and I'm looking for where my passion lies. Not so much what will make me a lot of money, but for what I will enjoy doing for the rest of my life. This is not to say I want to be in poverty for my passion--I need nutritious food, and I need health insurance--but I'm not incredibly materialistic.

I believe that my passion lies in creativity. I do think that I would really appreciate utilizing color discrimination, and my aesthetic sense, and I would like to learn design--but I need training and exposure in these fields. I have a desire to create objects of beauty. I have a desire to create beauty everywhere, including within myself; and I knew this even before I started the career and life planning class. Jeweling is also something that I've been doing since I was 11 or 12.

I'm not sure right now whether I want to become a glassworker or a beader, or a real sheet-metal-and-stone jeweler. But I would appreciate it if anyone--or many--could give me a heads up as to what the career outlook is for becoming a glass artist.

School project...i need help fast

my name is ryan. im very new here. Im a Senior in highschool at College park high in Pleasant hill, ca (east bay) were doing a project called senior experience. basically what we need to do is go out in the real workd and...experience something (imagine that!) i REALLY REALLY want to learn some lamp working techniques. The problem I run into is people wont tell me anything unless I take their class. there is no way i can afford a class. the project doesn't even allow us to spend more than $20.00. im kind of in a hard spot. i have been doing small beads on a hot head so i have some knowledge of working with hot glass. if ANYONE can teach me, or knows of someone that can teach me please write to me.
