So, um, what's everyone doing for Samhain?

I saw a post on another tribe regarding "The Spiral Dance" (should be said with a booming voice, I imagine) in SF. Has anyone ever attended this event? Will I have to dress up like a pixie? Wearing tights make me itch and I chafe easily.

I can't spend another Halloween being told by the trick or treat-ers, "Dude, It's Happy Halloween, not Happy Samhain, gosh. Now give me my candy!"

I'm thinking of going. I've never been to one before, though. So here's hoping somebody responds with advice on what to wear.

I went to last year's Spiral Dance. I saw people dressed in all kinds of different outfits, from the mundane to the wild. If you want to dress in some type of ritual gear, or something that signifies the holiday, that's fine. I found out Spiral Dance is going on the same night as another event I really want to go to. grrrrr.

They used to hold it at Ft Mason but this year it's being held somewhere else. I don't know why. Well worth attending but be advised it goes quite late. For that reason I'd suggest carpooling with some folk instead of using public transit, otherwise you may get stranded at 1 am. I live over in the East Bay so I'm not sure yet how I'll get there.

I guess what I remember most about that night was the realization that I had now officially outlived my father. Very strange feeling.

I have been to Spiral Dance a few times, though not for a couple of years. It's fun, lots of neat people, and raising energy with so many is pretty moving. But I think I still perfer the little rituals I do with my Coven. Sad to hear about the disorganization happening over there :(

The Spiral Dance is a beautiful ritual experience...IF you ignore the politics. I go for the altars, the music, the performance, the Spiral (of course) and to celebrate in community...over 1500 people one year! I just got back from the ritual tonight, and it really wasn't very political this year. I do miss Ft Mason, although the Kezar Pavillion was nice, and very accessible to restaurants, etc. Not to mention better places to sit (in years past, they would tell you to bring a blanket to sit on because the floors were so hard).
The one thing I really like about what Reclaiming does, especially with Samhain, is that they bring in to the altar space what is relevant today, they make our spirituality meaningful for our times. I am sorry about the disorganization as well, guess that happens with any large group.

      Happy Samhain!

Mary & I also were there last night and you're right, they kept the politics low key. Beautiful ritual. I found out a cpl days ago an old college classmate of mine crossed over last week, so I honored him there.

Yes it seems to happen with any local Pagan group I've noticed. Reclaiming or others. <sigh>

Happy New Year to you too! :)

This was my third year attending the Spiral Dance. I think it's fun, though I think the elemental altars could have been a bit more... "interactive" as they've been in years past (save for the North/Earth one which was astounding).

I know that the Reclaiming group has a very activist, womens rights, far far left thing going on... however they're also one of the largest groups in the area... I like to associate, but not TOO often for fear of getting up in all that. I agree with the ideas... but people don't like to be hit upside the head with things.

As far as dress has gone, and has always gone... you will see mundane dress, fancy dress, people with wings, lots of girls with glitter and face tattoos (I was one)... just about every type of dress you can imagine there would be someone there...

I even saw a little kid in a harry potter outfit! XD

I hope everyone has a great Samhain!
