Whirling at the studio....

We're having our monthly whirl tomorrow night...much to the chagrin of my lover who will be left at home alone for the 4th night in a row...poor dude, the things he puts up with.

6:30PM - doors get locked at 6:40 - more than likely we'll be finished up by 8:00

Wear comfortable LAYERS...you may also wish to bring a blanket for when you're finished whirling.

Dancemeditation Summer Monestary Movement - I'm planning on attending the first 5 days...anyone wanna join?

I'm planning on attending the first 5 days of this event, which would mean getting on a plane June 10th and returning June 16th.
I haven't purchased my plane ticket yet and I'll need to get a car rental or a shuttle since I'm leaving mid-way through and won't be able to ride with everyone else, but if anyone's interested in going, sharing a ride, experiencing the fullness of the Hudson valley in the Summer and de-mystifying your brain and body....here's the info.

Week One of The Monastery is open to all.
Week Two open only to attendees arriving by Day 4 of the retreat.

We return this year is the truly magnificent setting of the historic Mill and Mansion in Philmont NY. Workshops will be in the vast space by the churning mill river. Accommodation options include Shared Rooms in the Harder Mansion and tenting in the Carriage Barn.

DUDES!!! THANKS!!! The vision for the studio that lives in my head should be implemented PRIOR to our next shindig so that we can have enough room to accomodate EVERYone who wants to join in theee fun.

In the mean time, I'll take 100 people crammed on top of one another just to see their best girlz show their hearts and souls to the world.

Thanks to everyone for being there, making it happen, not complaining about the space, givin' luv and support to one another and just for being such a magnanomous group of people!!!!

Dancemeditation 3 Hour Session at BayouShimmy - Saturday August 9

Dancemeditation is a healing practice wherein we take the time to reconnect with our bodies through, gentle movement, free movement, writing, witnessing, chanting and whirling. No previous experience is necessary. Please bring a yoga mat and a small blanket, veil if you have one as well as a blindfold and writing materials. Please dress comfortably and wear layers in case the environment is too cold or hot.
Cost for the 3 hours is $40.00 - $20.00 to BayouShimmy Member Card holders.

2nd Annual Spring Student Showcase & Amateur Choreography Contest

Last year, BayouShimmy was proud to host our first Spring Student Showcase & Amateur Choreography Contest and this year we're doing it BIGGER & BETTER!

Despite how much we love Cafe Mediterranean and how much support they've given us over the last year, we have apparently grown too large as a group to continue our events at Cafe Mediterranean, lovely restaurant…but not big enough for the 100+ people who tried to crowd into it last year!

Raks Assaya (cane dance), the female version of the Men’s Tahtib (stick dance), is coy and flirtatious. The movements have been softened and stylized while still retaining an air of exhibitionism. According to researchers Raks Assaya is the epitome of female charm and one of the most popular dances in Middle Eastern entertainment. If you love the Egyptian dance stars or just Egyptian-style dancers, this class is for you! Then delve into *some* of the more modern Egyptian stylings as time allows. This class will be partial video study of classic Egyptian films and partial "active dance study". Kryss of Crescent Lotus, NOLA
Kryss will be focusing on basic style and attitude, arm and body positions, the ‘flamenco turn’, basic footwork, a few of the flamenco ‘marking’ steps and the “Zambra Mora” step as taught by Elena Lentini and Amaya. This will primarily be a technique class. No dance form is ‘quick and easy’, but if you’re looking for a fun and powerful way to add flare to your current dance style, this is your opportunity. Long full skirts are recommended, as well as leotards or tank tops. Loose t-shirts are advised against, as they will obstruct viewing the movement of the arms and body.

If you love the Egyptian dance stars or just Egyptian-style dancers, this class is for you. Noura saw her first bellydancer in Denver, CO over 10 years before she began taking lessons. Noura began studying Middle Eastern dance in 1998 under Belita Karima and Zahara Kasmir, attending two classes a week. Noura flew fast and furiously from zero to nearly professional by attending workshops with Mesmera, Morocco, Suzanna Del Vecchio and Shareen El Safy (just to name a few) within the first two years of dancing. Noura and Shamsi began teaching together in the summer of 2000. Noura has never stopped learning, continuing to take workshops throughout the U.S. and even traveling once to Africa with Mesmera. Noura is a licenced massage therapist and a former student of Tai Chi, both of which allow her a unique perspective on the body and how to teach movement. Noura’s skill and poise with sword and her smooth polished Egyptian style of dance make her a joy to watch.

SATURDAY MORNING:
West African Workout/Warmup - 1 hour~10am ~ Get down and dirty with some great West African music and moves! Bring a towel, water and a change of clothes. Olivia’s Recommendation > Don’t eat before class.

Then a 30 min break for Snax & a Change of clothes !

Liquid Layers ~ 11:30am ~ 2 hours ~ Bring the belly back in belly dance. Build combinations of liquid layers and torso work that roll and ripple through your belly, back, hips and shoulders. Then, add arms and footwork to frame and enhance some of your most elegant moves.

1 hour lunch break

SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Supah’ Saucy ~2:30pm~ 3 hours ~ Kicks, spins, long extensions and locks are the signature of Zafira’s current repertoire. This workshop presents some fancy footwork, spins and various. Couple these saucy moves with evocative music and emotion, and you are at the core of Zafira’s “steal-your-heart” style of Belly Dance.

SUNDAY ~ LATE MORNING (11a>2p)

Cane - MASTER CLASS ~ 3 hours ~ This workshop goes into history & context of cane, teaches folkloric moves in a short choreography, then puts a very contemporary Zafira Style spin on this folkloric dance.

Cost for my materials $45 (basic) some embellishments will be available for an additional price

Kate's Craft Bio: Kate has been crafting since the age of 5 when her mother first put her in front of a sewing machine. She has sewn competitively and made all of the curtains for her homes. In addition, she applies herself to a number of needlcrafts and othe various project. She is currently working on a certification to teach kimekomi, an ancient japanese doll art form. She is applying her numerous skills as lead designer/engineer of Tribal Trousseau-- a costuming venture of Indudala Tribe.

We were given the go-ahead on a Group Discount (10 or more people) for the Bellydance Superstars Babelesque show at the Manship Theatre in Baton Rouge on Oct 16 & 17.

costuming/practice partner?

I'm looking for a partner in crime.

I'm into the tribal look, and would really like to find someone to work with on costumes.

I would also like a bellydance practice partner, yoga partner, or general exercise buddy. I live by campus, though I have a car and I am so willing to meet wherever. If anyone is interested, let me know. :)
