BELLYDANCE UK DOCUMENTARY

topic posted Tue, April 29, 2008 - 7:20 AM by  Beatrice
I am making a documentary about the UK belly dance scene.

The aim of the documentary is to present bellydance in a positive light by showing what it is really about
and overcoming any of the sterotypes or negative views that may have been created by the media.
I want people to know that it is not about prancing around in tiny costumes jangling your boobs about.
It is a beautiful and spiritual art form with a wonderful supportive community and that it promotes positive body image for woman.
I want to promote the alternative bellydance scene and also have lots of stuff about Tribal

It will be shown on a new alternative lifestyle channel, I have a friend who
is in charge of what they put on the channel and he is kindly allowing me to have some airtime.
I will not be profiting from making this documentary,
I am doing it purely because of my love for Belly dance. I want people to see
what it is really about and also challenge any negative stereo types that have been created by the media.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BEING INVOLVED OR IF THERE IS SOMETHING YOU THINK SHOULD BE INCLUDED
IN THE FILM, PLEASE CONTACT ME AT shangrila.lounge@hotmail.co.uk

      Hi Liz.
I came into BD far too late at 56 I am really pushing myself with this hobby, I love to keep fit anyway so its great for me. I performed for the 1st time at the beginning of the year and I think I will be doing something in June too. Being older is a big advantage because we have few inhibitions left! Believe me, if I was a smooth skinned 20 something, or even a 30 something would do LOL! I would be earning a living at this! My eldest daughter has taken BD up as a hobby and is enjoying it too.

Such a great point. There's enough ageism in the world and bellydance is one of the few dance forms where you don't have to be under 35. I so admire dancers like Fifi who seem to have defied the whole ageist society by performing well into her 60s. To prove this point, perhaps you might focus on some mature professional dancers, and with this in mind, you can pick my brains as much as you like. I'm still in demand and I'm 51.

Absolutely! Age is one of the areas I will be including to show why bellydance is so positive for women.
Belly dance is accessible for all ages, shapes and sizes of women and we really support each other and celebrate being women and the female form.

Basically, when people watch the film I want to leave them thinking Wowwweee, Belly dance is great!

I have had so much interest and positive feedback about this, it is really great and just proves how wonderful and supportive the bellydance community is!
Because we have had so much interest, i am thinking of doing a few short documentaries to follow up the main one,
perhaps do some short films about different groups and classes.
I really want to give the dancers a voice and let them tell the audience what belly dance is to them.

Thanks for your feedback!! Keep it coming!! Spread the word!!

Oh yes, and another thing, before I forget......Don't forget to sign my petition to Include dance within the historical re-enactment or Sporting Activity exemption for the purchase of swords in reference to the Violent Crimes Reduction Bill.

PLEASE SHOW YOUR SUPPORT, SIGN & SPREAD THE WORD! ...

    Thanks x
