How did you choose your Stage Name?

The use or non-use of a stage name is one of the many interesting personal things that performers and entertainers do. The motivation to do so can be to acquire anonymity, comand attention or popularity, have a more attractive or exotic name, have a name befitting the respective industry, avoid discrimination or other reasons. This concept also exists among writers with the so called "nom de plume" or pen name. I was first aware of this concept at a young age when watching a movie about Sophia Loren in which she was asked to change from her real name of Sofia Scicolone to a stage name of Sofia Loren.
Of the many interesting stage names among actors, the most notable is that of Ramon Estevez who changed his name to Martin Sheen because he believed that an Irish name would command greater popularity. Interestingly one of his sons, Irwin Estevez, followed suit by adopting the name Charlie Sheen while his other son, Emilio Estevez left his name unchanged. There are so many interesting stories about stage names. To continue to list them would be beyond the scope of this topic.
On a personal level, my name Adel (also an Arabic word) has a common Western equivalent. Bonus points to the first non-Arabic speaking person who can tell me what that English name is. At one point in my life, I had the opportunity to change it and I chose to keep the name given to me by my mother.
In the Middle Eastern Dance community, I'm fascinated and impressed with the many notable and exotic names that instructors, professionals and students have adopted. For most, these stage names have become a significant part of their identity and for a select few, their brand. Some of these names are Arabic while others are not Arabic yet are interesting.
What motivated you to adopt a stage name? What does your stage name mean? How does one go about choosing a stage name? Was your choice difficult? easy? natural? How long did it take you to choose your name? Has your new name completely or almost completely replaced the original one? If you decided not to adopt a name why did you do so? Do you have any advice for others who desire to do so? Do you have an interesting story or comment about stage names?

If youre going to Rakkasah/Spring caravan, PLEASE, DO contact me if you wanna save money!
Most of you KNOW me or have heard of me. I am now in Southern NJ, ten miles from Philly! I am holding private lessons in my house, as I now have a room to dance in, watch videos/dvd's in, as well as just plain old hang out in. I have two spare rooms with queen size beds. Its a comfy, free, chill space to come. I am less than an hour from Spring Cravan/Rakkasah. If you would rather carpool, please contact me at my homepage. I will back-track as far as DE Memorial Bridge. (It's not far but 45 minutes at maximum)
My house is cat friendly, as I have three exotic cats now. They are cat friendly, but not dog friendly! They are SUPER-people friendly, and that is a warning, as they will probably leap from the floor onto your shoulder. This can hurt with little clothing. My cats think they are parrots! They will view you as a toy!
I live with my boyfriend of 2 years. He is also very people friendly! LOL!!!! It's a nice nieghborhood with no drama. PLEASE feel free to invite yourself, and I mean that! I hope to hear from some of you.
Also I have to add, that I am working at Spring Caravan with Nimeera of Cleopatra's Closet. So, know that I must be there early and am staying until it ends. You can always feel free to stay/leave my house at your own convenience! As stated above, the boyfriend is people friendly, and will help with anything you need, as he is used to coming backstage and helping us bellydancers out. He knows the ropes well! He has helped me with more costume alterations than anyone!
ALSO, I may be performing, as I got on the "back-up" list. Other than that, I will be selling Eye Kandy Glitter for Cleo's Closet. If you want GORGEOUS eyes, come to ME! C.J. of New Jersey.
Once again, please do contact me if you need/want free lodging. This area has diners/bars in walking distance. I am blessed to have "Nifty Fifties" right nextdoor! Wonderful food!!!!! NJ is notorious for thier diners and Italian foods. And trust me, if you stay, we are ordering out! Though I do provide food as well. But I dont know a soul that can pass up a pannzoroti when they know of one! Mmmmmm, hungry now, gonna go bug boyfriend for one!

Congratulations to all the dancers for a splendid performance last Friday! I attempted to write a review but found a better one written by Ruta. Thanks Yucy for bringing this to my attention. I have added a sample of the photos that I took. Ruta's review:

Safira spoke eloquently as she introduced the show.
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/cc26d24c-2d3d-43dd-aa52-8bf6b490e378

1- i was first, thank GOODNESS! no pressure or nothin' with raqia sitting RIGHT THERE! , the costume was one of raqia's designs, and i did 'boss ba'ah', which is SUCH a great song to start with..........AND i got a chance to relax and see everyone else
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/479db440-8026-4946-ab6b-c54b700ae4ab

2- Mayyadah Sabri : dancing shemadan in that gorgeous dress samira described, looking positively amazonian with her long red hair, tallness and grace! wow!
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/fdfa4c91-facb-4d4f-ac5e-729c3ec42828

3- Thalia : i think she was channelling the old school cairo dancers.....she did alot with her skirt, and expression, she's become known for cairo drama, and great pauses, and did NOT disappoint! she glowed!
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/9a1b764d-f2c0-476c-a619-fda8e29e7501

4- Atef and Samira's alexandrian Melaya Leff was SO cute, and saucy and fun! the whole seek/flirt/rebuff was SO well done, and atef hammed it up SO well.............it's great to see talented male dancers, and samira stepped up the sass.......
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/d9813801-c89f-4f57-9874-4b758b231004

5- Amartia : ok, it's worth mentioning cuz it's funny....i was originally going to dance 'ana fi intizarak', but found out it was a duplication...amartia! however! she rocked it! the wings were first used as a flowy part of the costume, then flared out dramatically, accented by her sinuous interpretation! i couldn't have rocked it as well....awesome!
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/9a1b764d-f2c0-476c-a619-fda8e29e7501

6- The NDC Troupe: ok, i LOVE these ladies..........they came out, canes on shoulder, during a percussive moment, their heads going, hat on head (i LOVED the hats.....added SERIOUS sass!), and going into an awesome group cane, at one point rear passing canes to front who did double flourishes, and back again.......i always look forward to their performances!
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/347453f5-7ec4-43ab-8de6-bb1ae5276b41

7- Nadirah Nasreen: rhythmic, lyrical, beautiful and graceful.....lovely smile radiating out to the audience...........the embodiment of sharq
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/0e7c9658-d892-4812-9e1c-ef7ec1ca2260

Intermission

1- MiaNaja: she has DIVA in every pore.........not only looking the part, but accented isolations are her trademark, and i've always loved her musicality....and her style, her expression was captivating
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/a5b56542-b0fa-42b1-b281-fd0501b31c47

2- Suzana: ADORABLE assaya!.....that fem galabiyah suited her perfectly, as did her cane.......the embodiment of assaya as the cute, quirky, fem version of the male tahtib...........the tahtib elements were there, but VERY feminine
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/cdae54c8-4a28-4e95-a052-5cee142808cb

3- Samira Shuruk's double veil........let me tell ya, she can do that in her SLEEP! always starting out with what appears to be one veil, the vibrant reds an ethereal cloudlike contrast to her black/white stripe as she spun with the veils spinning around her like a vortex......wow!
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/d6005847-7d1b-4efe-b5a2-00611b9127bf

4-"Belly Dance for Life" Hagallah is one of the cutes hagallahs i've ever seen........the ladies clearly enjoyed it, and i understand the costumes have a bit of a provenance attached , very synchronized, they obviously enjoyed themselves and so did the audience!
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/cc31160f-8dff-4507-97ef-a5dd87f44fc8

5- Lotus Niraja: everytime i see her, she outdoes herself......how is that even possible! drama, technique, beauty, grace..............all of it there, right in front of us......very high energy and beautiful
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/f4f344c1-737d-4313-abcb-b0610f719b46

6- Sehar: ok, this gal scares me, in a good way..........she is so young, and so talented..........using the veil like a melaya for part of it, i liked how instead of discarding the veil, she tied it around her hips, and demonstrated amazing shimmies..........
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/a9a7ae26-716b-4029-9234-595f6609b711

7- Saphira: ended she show with a lovely, lilting piece, lyrical, graceful and the proper end to wind down an amazing show...........
http://tribes.tribe.net/bdfl/photos/e9e652dc-4c83-4a72-8a65-034f0a1a9397

every performance i saw was great, and as zana said......everyone gave 110%, and some were most definitely off the charts........

I am the kind of person that when I am upset or depressed I curl into a ball and hide. I tend to shut the world and people out when I shouldn't. I hope that by the end of May I should have my life back in order and be able to get back involved with the BDFL. Again I apologize, I miss you guys! I miss dancing with you.

This weekend, I attended continuing education courses for my optometric profession in Nashville, Tennessee. Former surgeon general, David Satcher was a surprise guest speaker. In his own words, he told us that he was (is) considered the "doctor of the country" and as such he gave us (the attending optometrist) a prescription for ourselves, our patients and to share with anyone who will listen. Accordingly, I'm sharing this information with you while it's still fresh in my mind. He is aware that while these words are simple and common sense, they still need to be emphasized.

THE PRESCRIPTION FOR AN ENHANCED LIFE IS IS IN 4 CATEGORIES AS FOLLOWS:

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: We must have some form of exercise EVERY day. As dancers who practice to improve and perform, this is probably a natural activity for most of you.

PROPER DIET: "Increase the intake of FRUIT and VEGETABLES. Decrease intake of calories which means don't eat too much and don't eat too much junk." He pointed out that there is a staggering epidemic of obesity among the nation's children which is a risk factor to many life threatening conditions. Mr. Satcher explains that type 2 diabetes used to be called "adult onset diabetes" and occurred around the age of 40 where obesity was a risk factor to differentiate it from type 1 or juvenile diabetes. Now we are seeing new cases of type 2 as early as age 10 as a result of obesity!

SEX BEHAVIOR: Mr. Satcher did not make any specific comment about this area except that "we have to be responsible in how we conduct ourselves" in this area and that "we have to educate our children on how to be responsible."

MENTAL HEALTH: Mr. Satcher gave no ideas on how to care for our emotional and mental health. However, he did mention that we have to be cognizant of our mental health. He also stated and revealed that at the current rate, by the year 2020, DEPRESSION will be the leading cause of disability in the US.

Belly dancing plays an effective role in the area of PHYSICAL ACTIVITY and MENTAl HEALTH.
I believe that as entertainers and dancers, you hold part of the key to these life altering issues. While the role is not clearly defined at the moment, there is indeed a personal as well as a social role and responsibility. Incase of an airplane emergency, one of the many instructions that we are given is to get the oxygen mask on ourselves first before we help others with their mask. What good are we to others if we are not breathing correctly to save our own lives. Likewise, in this incredibly stressful world, we must master taking care and maintaining our own mental and emotional wellness so that we can give and receive support from others. Consider how while we practice dancing, we forget the troubles of the world for a few minutes as we're focused on the task at hand. While we perform for our audience we are giving them a few moments of pleasure. In return, if we did a good job, we receive a pleasant ovation that we can relive a few more times until the next performance. If we piqued the audience's interest, they too may want to start dancing either for fun or for lessons. If you really think about it, physical activity, proper diet, and appropriate sexual behavior themselves play a role in good mental health.
I never got around to getting the story of Norman Cousins in the book "Anatomy of an illness." Rather than entering a state of depression because of being advised by his doctors of his terminally ill condition, he laughed himself to better health by watching one comedy film after another for several days or weeks or whatever. Is it possible to really condition ourselves not to get depressed?

Whether it's dancing or other activities, what are your ideas for improving and or maintaining emotional and mental health either for ourselves or others? Sorry for posing such a difficult and perhaps sensitive question but the year 2020 is only 12 years away and after all, who better to ask than those of us who already belly dance for life!

"A person's name is to that person the most important sound in any language."
-Dale Carnegie-

The use or non-use of a stage name is one of the many interesting personal choices that performers and entertainers make. The motivation to do so can be to acquire anonymity, command attention or popularity, have a more attractive or exotic name, have a name befitting the respective industry, avoid discrimination or other reasons.

My name, Adel, is a common Middle Eastern name and is also an Arabic word. Bonus points go to Esther and Nina Amaya for being the first to figure out that it means "just" or "fair." Accordingly, the most common English equivalent is Justin. Although I had the opportunity to change it, I opted to keep the my birth-given name.

In the Middle Eastern Dance community, I'm fascinated and impressed with the many notable and exotic names that instructors, professionals and students have adopted. For most, these stage names have become a significant part of their identity and for a select few, their brand. Some of these names are Arabic while others are not. Some names, at first glance, appear to be stage names yet are birth-given names and occasionally, vica versa.

What motivated you to adopt a stage name? What does your stage name mean? How does one go about choosing a stage name? Was your choice difficult? easy? natural? How long did it take you to choose your name? Has your new name completely or almost completely replaced your given name? If you decided not to adopt a name why did you do so? Do you have any advice for others who desire to do so? Do you have an interesting story or comment about stage names?
point at feet (abous riglaik) and then make the hands travel upwards which looks like straightening a thin stocking or so: look at my smooth leg, kind of using the line: won't you look up in a different sense (look up my body that is so sexy instead of look up to the window where I'm sitting). Rimara does at 2:54, so does Richy.
As from Tahtil Shibbak, it seems like it is a part prior to the song, where the singer associates and sings along in a way that shows the mood in which he or she will sing the song, so it would be a key for interpretation of the character of that song.
Or more?
And how do you dance it?

On Friday April 4, we had a fabulous party at Floyd's Bar & Grill.
For an appetizer we had an amazing set of performances by the Belly Dance for Life members:

Jennah http://people.tribe.net/2dced059-de8b-45b5-b31f-1c5ef765161a
Trinity http://people.tribe.net/0b062146-2325-4619-9a7b-f31c84c8a6ce
and Anne! http://people.tribe.net/492e5be7-2df7-4871-ac09-32f3aa02ea7e

They set the stage for what was about to come. Great job ladies!

For the main course and with the demeanor of Johny Cash, the amazing Arab singer Tony Mercho and his live band gave us non stop entertainment that moved us to dance the night away with all styles of dancing that of course included a magnificent participation by the everyone for the Debke. Just when we thought there were no more surprises for the evening, the unimaginable happened.

For desert and for the highlight and twilight of the evening, the entire crowd spontaneously gathered around a certain table where the matriarch of the group was seated. The Arab singer Tony gracefully walked over to the table and handed over his microphone to this mysterious prominent member of our gathering and at that moment the room became so quiet that one could hear a pin drop. With the demeanor of Um Kalthoum, she began to sing with the most beautiful voice that can fill four ball rooms, the band accompanied her well and the crowd was moved to applaud with the loudest roar as she sang the first note of several bars from different classic Um Kalthoum songs that included INTA OMRI. Who was this mystery woman and can we have her again?

I can't wait for the next hafla!!!

First of all, many thanks to Sharaf who's help was most valuable. Secondly, I thank all of you who looked at my rough draft and also gave me vauable feedback. I'm humbled by the difficulty of presenting a perfect lesson. This lesson is geared for those who wish to learn Arabic, in particular the Egyptian dialect, for the purpose of understanding the words in the songs that they hear. What better way to practice what you've learned than to sing it over and over to the classics. It is with your feedback and suggestions that I can improve future lessons. The words presented below are traditionaly called part one of the song INTA OMRI by Um Kalthoum.

For the serious student who wishes to learn each word, I recommend using flash cards to make this fun. You'll need about 30 to 40 cards. I aslo recommend printing this page as you follow along with the youtube clips. Good luck and I'm excited to see how well this works. There will be a quiz next week :)
Typical English translation
Your eyes remind me of the lost days. They taught me to regret the past and its wounds. How could what I've seen in my wasted life be considered a life before you've come into my life? Your are my life which began with your light as it's dawn! You, you you are my life!

Exact translation
Retrurned me your eyes to the days that past. They taught me to regret the past and its wounds. That which I have seen, before sees you my eyes, my life is wasted. Counted how [can it be] against me? You are my life which began with your light as its morning and you you you are my life.

My interest in Middle Eastern dance arose in my childhood years while being exposed to Egyptian movies. Being raised in a conservative, first generation Egyptian family, belly dancing in public was discouraged. The history and reputation of belly dancing in public is a topic for another time. Suffice it to say, that being part of a first generation Egyptian-American family in the 1970's is like living in a small town where family reputation is very important. Viewing belly dance was acceptable to enjoy while watching Egyptian movies that always had a romantic love theme. As life went on, and our Egyptian-American culture became more open minded, I began to dance, albeit with little to no skill, at weddings and family functions. Dancing for me continues to be a fun, social and stress relieving outlet. For the past couple of years, as I spent more time involved in my sister, Noura'a avocation, I began to see belly dancing in a new light. I had the pleasure of meeting Yucy El-Banan, the director of Belly Dance for Life productions and accordingly, my real education in this beautiful industry began. The vagary of noticing a significant number of students and performers outside of the Middle Eastern culture who were interested and educated in Middle Eastern dance and music was indeed a pleasant shock. In addition to "fun," people were dancing for all sorts of reasons that I continue to discover until this day. These include educational, entertainment, social, therapeutic (physical, mental, spiritual), vocational, avocational, skill improving, being part of a group, teaching, financial, spiritual, motivational and enhanced self esteem. Did I miss anything? I'm very grateful to Yucy El-Banan for allowing me to be an integral part of this wonderful field. I'm particulary grateful for having met Yucy, the opportunity to share a common interest with Noura, meeting other wonderful people with common interests of whom I would have never met without BDFL. Isn't that what part of "life" is all about? Consequently, "Belly Dance for Life" continues to have a progressive new meaning for me. What does belly dance for life mean to you? Do you have an interesting story?

I had so much fun at the last Arabian Night's show! There were so many highlights to the evening!

We were so lucky to have two incredible performances by Kostana! We can never have enough of the Turkish and Romany dance and music. Thank you so much kostana!

Amarachi is back on the dance scene! It was a real treat to watch her perform Maghroura by Assy El Helani and a drum solo by Sahra Saidi.

Troupe 'Hip"notic gave us a dazzling visual and incredible auditory stimulus. The colorful costumes mesmerized our eyes while the sounds of The Huntress, Tafani and Mahadeva were a pleasure to listen to. Great choreography! Would love to see it again! Anon, Becca, jessenia, netra, Pazia, Shahlazar and Tania.... Great job!!!!

What would March and St. Patrick's Day be without ShamRaqs? The ShamRaqs Raqed our world last Thursday!!! The choreography was spectacular, Trinity and Anne outdid themselves as they presented Celtic fusion for the first time!!!! The dance was great to watch especially that fancy Irish footwork (for lack of a better term). Mrs Heather Bell gave a nice ending to the performance and it was great to see Jennah and Halima provide the Egyptian ingredient to the performance with the Shamadan. Ladies, what's the possibility that we can see that again live before next March!?

Here is the precious ShamRaqs bio that I never got to read.

"When people think of Middle Eastern Dance, they often see Egypt, the pyramids and Cairo. This next group of dancers sees bagpipes, men in kilt, fields of luscious green grass and shamrocks. The ShamRaqs came to life after Trinity, spent a few months living and teaching belly dance in Ireland. After returning to states, she had a vision of Irish Belly dancers, and tonight you will see that vision come to life for the first time. Combining Trinity's 4 years of dance experience and Anne's love of dance and all things Irish, It didn't take long for the magic to happen. Their combined passion for Irish music and Belly dance have come together to make something truly spectacular. Trinity and Anne wish to thank Yucy for having them here this evening and for continuing to be a great teacher and mentor."
Merhaba!
So there's a lot of discussion online about how to actually SAY the word "dancer" in Arabic. Some say that 'rakkasah' means dancer, others are saying that this is a made up work, the word is really ra'asa.
So...I'm confused!
Can you tell us how to say 'I am a dancer' with pronunciation keys too min fadlak?
wa Kull = wa Kull = "and the entire" or "and every
Here is a comon expression one person can give to another for a festive occasion, like their birthday or to each other on a holiday like New Year, or religious holiday, etc....

EXPRESSION OF CONGRATULATIONS
To a male: Kulli sana winta taYeb = Every year and you are well = May you be well all your years.
female: Kulli sana winti taYeba
group (like a family): kulli sana winto taYebeen

Example: A young boy just graduated highschool or you want a sustitute expression for happy birthday.
tell him: Kulli sana winta tayeb = May you be well all your years
variation: "mubrook! Kull sana winta Tayeb." = Congratulations! May you be well all your years.

RESPONSE
to a male: winta TaYeb = and you well = same to you = likewise
female: winti Tayiba
group: winto Tayibeen = and all of you well = same to your family = same to you all

I recommend that you run these words by someone who speaks conversational Egyptian or Arabic for the appropriate pronounciation.
When you're confident that you have mastered the correct pronounciation, I recommend that you practice both the delivering and responding expressions to the male, female and group. Consider flash cards.
Kulli sana winta tayib. Response... winta tayib. winti tayiba. winto tayibeen
kulli sana winti tayiba.

I'm trying this post for size. Let me know if you find it useful and if it's worth posting more like it or any suggestions that you may have.

I recommend that if you are genuinely interested in learning these words, that you find an Egyptian speaker to guide you with the pronounciation or better yet, get them to tape it for you. Who knows, if you are really interested, I might make an audio myself. You should master the pronounciation before memorizing.

I emphasize that most of these are EXPRESSIONS and warrant detailed explanations. Attempting to explain them to you in simple terms is akin to an American explaining that "take care" or "take it easy" means "good bye" OR "what's up?" means "hello" to a non-Westerner in simple terms. I'm resisting my desire to explain as I tend to very very detailed. Explanations are available upon request.
